Yes, Calvin "The Punching Postman" had a special late round delivery for Ruiz that enabled him to pull out a unanimous decision. Ruiz delivered some great action for the fans. All the planets must have been in alignment!

*Latest Report - July 7th*

This is Jersey Jim reporting from the dark, bluesy banks of the Mississippi River. I'm down here about a stone's throw away from the fabled French Quarter in Louisiana. A makeshift ring has been constructed for tonight's World Flyweight Title Unification between Jorge Acre and Pongsaklek Wongjongkam.

It's dark, drizzling and dreary... just the way we like it. Booze and Broads are in abundance so things are looking up.

I was pleased to make the acquaintance of one - Larry Holmes who's traveling around the country with his trainer, Richie Giachetti, living at out of a suitcase - going from one tankwater town to the next. Larry's 11-0 all by knockout. He'll be fighting in the prelim fight against the Italian Heavyweight Champ Franco Cavicchi. Holmes hasn't fought anyone and I have a feeling they brought him here to pad Cavicchi's record...

The country's deep in recession and everyone's feeling the heat but I'm thankful that there always seems to be enough booze and cigars on hand to get through the night.

Some guy gave me a matchbook cover a few years back that I stuck in my wallet. It had the name of some joint on it that he told me I should visit if I every found myself down here in the Big Easy. It says, "House of the Rising Sun" on it. And there's a phone number. I'll have to look that up later after the fights and a few shots on Bourbon Street.

Bombs Away at the Dock of the Bay

Early Line:
Franco Cavicchi, the Italian Heavyweight Champion, taking on undefeated, untested and unknown - Larry Holmes from Easton, PA. Cavicchi's looking to establish himself on this side of the Atlantic. A entourage of Italian beauties escort him to the ring.

The Fight:
Cavicchi looks confident and meets Holmes in the center of the ring. Holmes snaps a few quick jabs. Cavicchi paws with the right. Not much action. The 2nd and 3rd are fought at a slow pace. The punch output is minimal at best. Crowd's starting to jeer and boo. More of the same in the 4th. No meaningful shots being landed. Where'd I put that House of the Rising Sun number?

Cavicchi lands a big shot to start the 5th! A followup flurry sends Holmes into the ropes! Cavicchi's unloading some big shots. Holmes is in trouble! There's the bell.

Cavicchi resumes his attack in the 6th. Oh, Holmes takes a huge right hand. He staggers backwards... he's down! It's hard to tell how badly he's hurt. He's up at 5! The fight's going to resume. Cavicchi letting it all hang out! Oh, he's landing some big, big shots. What the heck is holding Holmes upright? There's the bell.

We're in the 6th. Cavicchi's slowing down a bit. Holmes lands a few jolting jabs. He's moving a bit. Cavicchi clinches. Holmes lands a few shots on the inside. Holmes lands a hook off the jab at the bell.

Cavicchi's got one of the ladies combing his hair between rounds. He's up and posing for the crowd. I've seen it all...

We're in the 7th. Holmes lands two-three-four jabs in a row. Cavicchi looks confused. There's another jab and big right hand down the pipe! Down goes Cavicchi!! Face-first! He's up at the count of 4! Here comes Holmes! Larry Holmes - teeing off. Cavicchi's in trouble. There's the bell!

Cavicchi in a defensive shell in the 8th. Holmes picking his shots but punching sparingly. Cavicchi looks like he's in survival mode.

Holmes starting fast in the 9th. Cavicchi trapped along the ropes. Holmes opening up. Cavicchi slips a big right from Holmes... BAM! Cavicchi nails Holmes with a huge uppercut and down... goes... Holmes...

He's up at 7. The referee, Jorge Alonso, is going to let this one go on. Here comes Franco Cavicchi. Franco unloading the works. Holmes getting ripped with big, big shots. Holmes looks ready to go. He's barely on his feet. There's the bell.

Holmes is out fast for the 10th and final round. It's kill or be killed now. Holmes snapping Cavicchi's head with jabs. Cavicchi looks tired. So does Holmes. Holmes is throwing punches with both hands. Defense is out the window. Three big shots back Cavicchi up. He's hurt... Cavicchi's hurt. Here comes Holmes. There's the bell. This one's over. I would have to say the second half of this fight more than made up for the first half.

We're waiting for the scorecards....

96 to 92
94 to 93
96 to 94

winner by unanimous decision

Franco Cavicchi

What a fight that was. Holmes had a lot of heart but it wasn't enough to pull this one out

In what world (or universe) could Franco Cavicchi become a "name" like he can in a TBCB II world?

Jim, great fight, and Franco at the very least has a great name for a fighter.

Thanks, he won the "role" thanks to his name. It'll be interesting to see what's in the future for Franco.

Bombs Away at the Dock of the Bay - The Main Event

Jorge Arce vs. Pongsaklek Wongjongkam
(15 Rounds to Unify the Flyweight Championship of the World).

Early Line: Both fighters undefeated, both confident going into this unification. Arce should be able to pull this one out. Maybe. I'm putting my House of the Rising Sun money on it!

The Fight:
Fast first round. I forgot how fast the Fly's can be. Pong and Arce landing stinging punches. Pong backing up Acre. Good first round action. Pong seems too fast for Arce in the second. He's tagging Arce with some quick, solid shots. Arce had better unveil his left-hook to the liver soon.

Wow, Arce must have heard me. Arce digs hard to Pong's body. A big uppercut buckles Pong's legs. Okay, now we've got a fight!
Pong beating Arce to the punch again in the the 4th. Now I can clearly see, Arce just a little bit slower than Pong. He's gonna have to bring down the thunder. Arce edges Pong in the fifth bulling him into the ropes and landing some solid shots.

Arce races out of his corner and tosses caution to the wind here in the 6th! Oh, Arce burys two right hands to Pong's body. Two hooks and a cross to Pong's head. Arce's letting it rip here in the 6th! Oh hell, I hope Arce knocks Pong into someone else's universe. Can I get sued for writing that?

A three punch combinations rips Pong's head to the left and right. If Pong were a ship, I'd say he's sinking. Pong's eye is lumping up real good. Or real bad, if you've got money on him.

We're entering the 7th. Pong's fighting back hard. Looks like Pong's in the driver's seat right now. Pong's bouncing Arce's head around like a speedbag. Someone's "0" has gotta go.

Alright, Arce's back. He's tearing into Pong like he's a Heavy Bag. Pong's in full retreat. Arce's got some swelling around the eye, but his face looks like a model's compared to Pong's. I'm surprised Pong doesn't take a knee so he can recover. There's the bell. The 8th is history.

Arce asserting his will here in the 9th. Pong's staggers badly after absorbing a right cross directly to the point of the chin. Pong's legs buckle after absorbing another combination from Jorge Arce. Pong's hands coming down to his sides. Pong's corner must be discouraged. It looks like some of them are leaving, disappearing into the crowd. I've never seen that before.

Here we are in the 10th. Pong's corner's gone. He sponged himself down and applied the enswell. A few bums from the crowd are now bringing the stool and the spit bucket in and out of the ring.

Arce doing a shuffle and winding up with bolo punches. Pong's eating all kinds of leather here in the 10th. With 5 rounds to go, Pong's gonna need a miracle punch to turn this thing around.

Pong's back in business in the 11th. I can't believe it. He's fighting back like a man possessed. Arce's eye is swelling up, now. Arce's fighting back. Pong has a definite edge in the 11th, though. Just when I was ready to celebrate......

Both fighters meet in ring center in the 12th. It's bombs away. Both fighters are tearing into one another. Not a single backward step. Wait! Two big hooks from Arce, a big overhand right, hook to the body and a right cross. Down goes Pong! Pong's struggling to regain his feet. He's up at the count of 6. Arce's after him. He's catching air trying to get Pong out of there. Pong's stumbling all over the place. A few good shots and he's done. Arce can't connect. He's missing by inches and Pong's gonna survive the 12th.

The fighters butt heads early in the 13th. Arce's bleeding above the left eye. Arce is outscoring Pong but Pong's still giving a respectible account of himself. I take my hat off to Pong. He's earned my respect here tonight.

We're in the 14th round. Two champions with no quit in them have brought this crowd in the Big Easy to their feet. Pong's unloading. He's not done yet. Arce retreats to the ropes. Pong's letting it fly. Arce with a booming hook off the ropes. The crowd's roaring its approval. Both fighters leaning on each other for support. There's the bell. We're going to the 15th and final round.

The touch gloves to start the 15th. Arce lands a jab. He lands another. Arce moving and landing jabs from the outside. Good left hook from Pong. Pong tries bulling Arce into the ropes. Arce spears Pong with a few more jabs. They trade jabs at ring center. That's it! The final bell. Two men walking into the ring tonight - each with pieces of the Flyweight Title. One man's about to leave the same ring - the Undisputed King.

Here comes the decision...

145-140
145-141
145-140

The winner by unanimous decision

Jorge Arce!

Two dynamite fights. You can't get much better. Now, where is that phone number and matchbook cover?

Two-Ton Tony Announces Comeback!

Jersey Jim here with the latest Boxing news and updates.

Today, Two-Ton Tony Galento announced his comeback. I was having a drink at his bar in Newark about 4 weeks ago when he first told me about it. I've have the priviledge of doing the exclusive, inside the training camp coverage. His first opponent has yet to be announced.

Two-Ton Tony has become Three-Ton Tony since his retirement. He'll be looking to trim about a ton off before he climbs into the ring for his first comeback fight!

Stay tuned my friends....

Jim, I bumped into Whitey Bimstein this afternoon, and he is quite confident that he can get Tony back down to the 235 lb range, and somehow he made me believe it.

Whitey is the perfect cornerman for Tony! Now the question is, if you were Tony's management, how would you move Two-Ton along.

My thinking is; George Foreman came back to raise money for his church and to show the kids what hard work and discipline can do.

Tony is trying to raise money to keep his bar, to show the bums sleeping on the curb what hard work and discipline can do.

So with that in mind, I think a matchup with Steve Zouski might do the trick?

** Tony Galento Side Note **

Joe Louis said that only two fighters ever hurt him in the Ring. His knockdowns to lesser fighters were more of a result of his being a slow starter than being in actual trouble.

He said, the only fighter who ever really hurt him badley with a single punch was "that little fat man" Tony Galento.

My version of Tony Galento reflects the card version that came with the box game in the late 70's. That was the one with the yellow strip across the top.

Two-Ton Tony Galento vs. Steve Zouski
(Galento came within a punch or two of becoming Heavyweight Champion of the World, returns to the ring again capable journeyman, Steve Zouski after 10 year absence from the ring).

Early Line: Galento: "I'll moider da bum!"
Zouski: "The fat old guy will be huffing and puffing by the 3rd. I'll put him to sleep in the fifth."

The Fight: Times have been tough across the land lately and in this particular universe as well. The City of Newark is proud to be sponsoring "The Return of Two-Ton Tony." This is Jersey Jim, coming to you live from Ruppert Stadium on Wilson Avenue in Newark, N.J. The crowd here is chanting Tony-Tony-Tony as 36 year old Two-Ton makes his way into the Ring. Steve Zouski, his opponent, is smiling and looking confident.

Tony looks like he's 3 weight classes above Zouski as they're receiving their instructions in the center of the ring.

The fighters are now back in their corners... and there's the bell.

Both fighters trade straight lefts at ring center. Galento staggers Zouski badly with a huge right hand over the top. Zouski's hanging on! Tony digs a big left to the body. Zouski's hurt! Galento rips Zouski's head back with a big uppercut. Steve Zouski's looks like he's out on his feet.

A short right hand from Galento and down - goes - Zouski. Zouski's slowly uprighting himself. He's back up at the count of 8. Referee Frank Cappuccino waves the fighters together. Galento lands a good right to the body. Zouski's corner's thrown in the towel. That's it. Cappuccino is stopping the fight. The official time is 2:53 of the first round.

Tony's lighting a cigar and acknowledging the cheers from his fans.

The beer's going to be flowing tonight - here in Newark, NJ!

Heavyweight Title Unification

Next up... all eyes in the universe will be focused upon two men as they step into the ring for what very well may be the final contest of each man's career.

It's James Jeffries vs Vitali Klitschko

Jeffries is showing the beginning signs of decline. Vitali Klitschko's time on top is also in question.

Two Crowns... One King.

The Fight has been billed as:

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING

TUESDAY NIGHT - JULY 15TH

Hope to see you there!

Two Cousins & Dreams of Glory

Flyweight "Diamond Jim" Santini and his cousin, Middleweight Johnny "Smokin Aces" Torcello had dreams of Olympic glory. Both fighters, amateur standouts in New Jersey and New York were considered to be shoe-in's for the Flyweight and Middleweight divisions on last years US Olympic boxing team.

Those dreams went up in smoke, however, when the two fighters were implicated to be key players in an illegal Poker game scandal that erupted just weeks before the Olympic trials.

"So we played a little cards and made a little money," shrugs Diamond Jim. "My cousin and I were driving to the damn tournaments in a twenty year old station wagon with wood paneling on the side. What good are trophies and medals when we can't even pay the bills?"

"We called Tony Galento," adds Johnny Torcello. He says, "You's guys are welcome to play poker in my bar anytime." Then he hooks us up with Whitey Bimstein, Ray Arcel and Freddie Brown. Those guys tell us to "Forget the Olympics; we'll bring you up the old way - old school."

At 5' 8" Diamond Jim Santini is the 107 lb. version of the classic "bean pole" boxer/slugger. Diamond Jim brings height and reach advantages into the ring against just about every opponent at that weight. He keeps an ace of diamonds tucked in his sock and has been know to drop it on the prone body of a knockout victim, which, in the amateurs - earned him several fines by state and national commissions alike.

"I've got two main concerns," says Jim Santini. "Living and Fighting. I don't have time to worry about what people think, like or don't like. We can talk about that after I'm retired and sitting in a chair somewhere."

"I love fighting," says Torcello. "I find it very therapeutic. Knocking guys out in parking lots has a lot of drawbacks. You can dislocate a knuckle - mess up your hands. Plus, you gotta post bail afterwards usually, even when you've won. So, Jim and I put our heads together and decided to take a page from Sinatra's book. We're gonna do it - our way! We're gonna ride the train all the way, baby. All the way to the Hall of Fame."

Diamond Jim Santini (FLY) and Johnny Smokin Aces Torcello make their pro-debuts tomorrow night in Laurel Garden, Newark, NJ.

Fighter Debuts

Diamond Jim Santini (debut) vs. John Conners (FLY)

No surprises here. Santini throws 55 punches - LANDS 55 punches, which has Conners out on his feet and the fight stopped at 2:59! Santini, a former amateur standout delivers against sadly overmatched Conners.

Johnny "Smokin Aces" Torcello (debut) vs. Gary "Shotgun" Logan (MW)

Torcello comes out smokin in the first. Horrific body shots double Logan over and have him covering for his life. Most of the crowd is surprised to see him last the round. Johnny Torcello resumes his merciless assault here in the second. The ref mercifully rescues Logan and stops the mismatch with several seconds remaining in the round.
