May 2323 SIP and ALE League Roundup

Editor’s note: We apologize to all Chronicle readers for the labor strike that halted weekly editions of the Chronicle during Spring Training in April and the start of the season in May. The work stoppage is over, due to the intervention of the Prefect of Labor, who ordered the recalcitrant pressers back to their jobs. We hope to continue with our regular weekly roundups of action in the SIP and ALE Leagues forthwith. For now, though, a roundup of the first month of th 30th Anniversary Season!

THE GLORY OF THEIR TIMES: Perhaps nothing is more glorious than Opening Day in the SIP and ALE Leagues, a national holiday in both Setheridge and Hederan. And this Opener, May 2, brought a full slate of games and equally glorious weather throughout the Continent. Most parks and stadia were sold out, and those fans unable to buy tickets watched blissfully on visitron screens set up in the squares and plazas of the land.

We know the fledgling winter game of brattleball occupies many of us during the colder months. But that is simply to wile away the hours, and on Opening Day it is base-ball, and base-ball alone, that consumes our hearts.

ROOKIE MAKES A MARK: What better way to start a big league career than to drive in the winning run in extra innings on Opening Day. That is precisely what RF Maegor Kelok of Binney did in the Foxhound’s opener on the road against Schawmount City. Kelok, who won his first ever roster spot in spring training at age 27, drove in the winning run in the top of the 12th with a two-out triple. “He’s a keeper,” said ‘hounds Manager Tormund Arson. Kelok has since continued to excel and was named Youngster of the Month in the SIP League for May.

SURPRISE OF THE MONTH: The Nomystian Division of the ALE is widely considered to be the toughest of the Junior Circuit, dominated by the McKinvenmond Lake Goats (29 playoff appearances in 30 years) and the Powlett Creek Summit Great Danes (16 straight second-place finishes). So the big surprise of either league so far has to be the strong showing of the Pear Falls Stone Crabs, who so far post a 22-6 record, tying them for first with the Goats.

The Stone Crabs so far have been led by veteran 1B Eleadon Lynn. Lynn, you may well recall, posted a phenomenal 30 HRs and 84 RBI in 2322, and appears well on his way to another fine season. That, we expected. But equally impressive has been young SS Moro Fonmor, who has managed 29 RBI on 29 hits so far. Fonmor is in his sixth big league season, but he is only 24, so its certainly possible that he is still developing as a ballplayer. Fonmor is that rare combination of tremendous power and unbelievable defensive skills.

With Lynn and Fonmor, the Stone Crabs certainly could keep pace with the Goats this season. We are anxiously waiting to see if they somehow manage end the Goat’s jaw-dropping streak of 29 consecutive first place finishes.

UNTOUCHABLE, NEARLY: Two pitchers, one in each league, have been virtually unhittable in May. In the SIP we have Ander Anshumesh of Mount Waylandtown, who dominates virtually every pitching category among starters: he is 6-0 in six starts, with a 1.27 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, and 28 strikeouts. Anshumesh was traded to the Camels two seasons ago by the Tillbrookson Bluff Lizards for 1B Pyce Aedahelia, whose skills are rapidly declining, and who appears to have be relegated to the Lizards bench. That trade now is looking like a huge win for Camels General Manager Humphery Preston.

Over in the ALE, starter Little Dustin of the Bottom Brook Jackrabbits is drawing stares -- in five starts he is 4-0 with four complete games. In fact, Dustin is averaging more than 9 innings per start. How is that possible? He went 9.1 innings in what turned out to be a 14-inning affair against the Mount Jarviswell Saint Bernards. Dustin pitched complete game victories in the other four starts. He has a 0.20 ERA and a 0.71 WHIP. All this at the tender young age of 39.

Dustin debuted for the Jackrabbits way back in 2205; this is his 18th season. But there’s little doubt that Little may well pitch into a third decade of base-ball.

RUMBLINGS: Sources in the office of Commissioner Dolent Resing hint they are becoming increasingly concerned about some of the outlandish promotions that certain teams are staging so far this season. The sources won’t say which teams, nor which promotions. The disastrous Folgerley Centre Bluff Pandas, with only four wins in May, raised eyebrows recently with a “Pound the Panda” promotion in which prizes were awarded to those who decimated a stuffed panda bear attached to a rope. “These teams are being talked to,” said our source. “We have to operate with some decorum. Even the ALE League.”

June Week 1 2323 SIP and ALE League Roundup

Slow Motion went 10 innings

Game of the Week: June 4th -- New Ungerapolis Fisher Cats at McKilligan Terriers
The Fischer Cats are off the a horrible 6-28 start, but in this game they came oh so tantalizingly close to toppling the 26-8 Terriers. The Cats struck first, with a single run in the top of the first as they quickly got to Terriers Ace Tyan 'Slow Motion' Alaithus.

And with that run, it was almost as if Slow Motion woke up and realized he was never going to get beat by the lowly Fischer Cats. After that first inning, Alaithus gave up a lone single in the second and then was perfect for the next eight innings. That’s right -- 8 innings. He pitched all 10 innings for the win, at just 115 pitches. And the Terriers needed every bit of his Slow Motion, as they won it with some small ball, a double and two singles, in the bottom of the 10th.

Honorable Mention: The wild 18-inning game between the Tillbrookson Bluff Lizards and the Binney Foxhounds, also on June 4th. Take a look:

Again, smallball is key, as the Foxhounds eek out one run in the bottom of the ninth, and the gamewinner in the bottom of the 18th, by stringing together combos of walks, singles and a double.

Performances of the Week: At the plate, Ryans Nukost of the Boundymount Corner Raccoons has been playing like the Leagues end tomorrow. In the 8 games since the start of June, Nukost has hit .324 with 5 HR and 11 RBI. In his 11th SIP season, Nukost could be on his way to his finest year yet.

Lysand is wracking up the innings

On the mound, Kelili Lysand of the Gregorsoncott Sick Monkeys appears poised for a break-out year at age 28. In June he has notched two complete games, one a shutout, the other in which he yeilded just a single run. In fact, in 9 starts so far this year, Lysand has pitched complete games in 8 of them. He already has 80 innings pitched, with an 8-1 record, 1.80 ERA and 0.99 WHIP to show for it. We can only hope his arm doesn’t fall off by year’s end.

Coming up this week:

Team Win/Loss Streaks

June Week 2 SIP and ALE League Roundup

The Count could be counted on

GAME OF THE WEEK: June 16th -- Crenshaw City Warthogs at Widmertown Flying Squirrels
Crenshaw City is currently leading the Osler Division and this game epitomizes why. Ketter 'Count' Asgar was masterful for the ‘hogs, hurling a complete game one-hitter against the usually potent Flying Squirrels offense. Asger, signed as a free agent in the offseason after six seasons in Kendall, has been having an off year so, giving Warthogs fans cause to question the signing. But the Count shrugged off the doubters on the 16th, with this outstanding effort.

The single hit for the Squirrels: a 6th inning double by 3B Adwalewan Slyte which saved his team from the ignominy of a no-hitter.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: Tyan 'Slow Motion' Alaithus of the McKilligan Terriers, who pitched 10 innings for the second time in as many weeks. Last week we chose as Game of the Week Slo-Mo’s stupendous effort on June 4thagainst the Fischer Cats. In that game Alaithus at least earned a W for his efforts. But on June 13th against the Foxhounds, Slow Motion went 10.1 innings in a losing effort that was finally decided in the 17th, with Amory Gargalen on the mound in relief.

And a painful loss it must have been. Gargalen gave up a lead off triple to 2B Woaldan Briggs, hitting under .200 on the year. Briggs was quickly driven in by an even weaker hitter, C Phillip Rhae, whose average rose to .100 with that walk-off single. Slow Motion, watching his 10-inning effort go up in smoke to two horrible hitters, must have been apoplectic.

PRODUCTIVE WEEK: Middleman Tomer Moore of the Fischer Cats made the most of his five appearances in relief over six days:

Three wins and two saves while helping the last place Fischer Cats notch a (so far) five game winning streak (which comes after a seven-game losing streak). Fans want more of Moore.

PRODUCTIVE WEEK, PT. 2: C Tantab Blanetree of the Bereton Park Hammerheads was 7-19 this week with 8 RBI. A career .251 hitter, Blanetree this season is hitting above .280, thanks to a new approach with his feet position at the plate. The 31-year old backstop credits Hammerheads Hitting Coach Colin Manns for the new stance bringing quick results.

Coming up this week:

June Week 3
SIP and ALE League Roundup

The Locomotive chugs along

GAME OF THE WEEK: 06/17/2323 Mount Waylandtown Fighting Camels at Tillbrookson Bluff Lizards
Fans love a lineup with power, and that certainly is the case in Tillbrookson Bluff, where the Lizards feature a power-packed lineup led by the Locomotive himself, LF Andres Anshahamman. Currently third in the league in both HR and RBI, AAnshahamman single-handedly won this game with two solo home runs: a shot in the bottom of the 7th to tie it, and then again in the bottom of the 12th to win it. Fans danced in the stands and demanded a curtain call. Tillbrookson Bluff is in second place in the Wistedana Division, and they’re hoping the Locomotive can deliver them to first.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: We’re giving it to a performance in the very same game: the Fighting Camels’ pitcher Ash Re'Rol went 10 full innings for Mt. Waylandtown, holding the Lizards to just four hits. Ash doesn’t have great stuff, but finesse is all that matters: his repretoire includes four nasty off-speed pitches: slider, changeup, splitter and knuckle curve. Batters are, to say the least, flummoxed. Re-Rol five days later was just as masterful, holding Binney to one earned run over eight innings. Unfortunately he tallied zero wins for the efforts.

PRODUCTIVE WEEK: The ageless LF Dorean Willis of the first-place McKilligan Terriers never lets up. Here’s his week: 3 HR, 10 RBI, a .321 average. Not bad for a player who’s 40 years old. Also deserving mention: the pitching duo of Philliep 'Bomber' Cason and Benfred 'Eager Beaver' Arson of the West Somerchester Rhinos. Each tallied two complete game wins in the past week. The Bomber, in fact, has now had four straight complete game wins dating back to June 9th.

Coming up this week:

Team Win/Loss Streaks
The Mad Dogs take their 5 game losing streak to Red Tummlyn
The Screech Owls take their 4 game losing streak to Gregorsoncott

Player Streaks
P Edrick Dyer (KEN) hasn't blown a save in 16 chances.
P Bruce Naerys (WSC) hasn't blown a save in 12 chances.
P Legeawin Marissa (CRN) hasn't blown a save in 16 chances.
P Hullen Ginvan (MCK) hasn't lost in 11 starts.
P Kenned Shagga (SCH) hasn't blown a save in 12 chances.
P Guyard Lucostan (RTM) is on a 4 game losing streak.
1B Lars Toyne (WID) has hit safely in 18 consecutive games.
P Philliep Cason (WSC) has won 4 consecutive games.
P Dak Hobb (GRG) hasn't blown a save in 22 chances.
P Traua Foreman (MTW) hasn't lost in 6 starts.

In 15 Innings, Last-Place Squads
Play Their Hearts Out

Lowry went from hero to goat

(Binney) -- When you’re a last place team, what are you playing for? Even in July, both the Binney Foxhounds and the New Ungerapolis Fischer Cats are out of contention. Yet on July 3rd the two teams played their hearts out, in a 5-hour, 15-inning game that was heart-thumping until the very end.

This says it all: no one gave up. The Fischer Cats tied the game at 8-8 with a run in the top of the 9th. And then the two squads battled through four scoreless innings until hitting the 15th.

In the top of the 15th, with the normally-solid Kulttok Pured on the mound for the ‘hounds, things seemed to fall apart. He made the mistake of walking the lead-off guy, the light-hitting Dezial Palla, and then SS Victarion Eihalla reached on an error that advanced Palla to third. C Jory Do'Gokk was an easy first out, and that brought to the plate the pitcher, MR Leajan Lowry. Easy out, right? Wrong.

Pured opened to Lowry low and away for a ball. On the next pitch Lowry fouled off a fastball. Just connecting must have given him confidence, because on the third pitch Lowry lined a sharp single to RF that managed to drive in both Palla and Eihalla.

So the top of the 15th ends with Lowry the unlikely offensive hero, having driven in the go-ahead run and an insurance run. Fischer Cats up, 10-8. Now all Lowry needs to do is get three outs in the bottom of the 15th. Ahem.

But he matches Pured’s error of walking the lead-off batter, in this case the Foxhounds C Elyas Caine. LF Jhaqo Beesbury hits into a ground out but Caine is able to advance to second. Lowry induces 2B Rob Brown into a fly out, and suddenly he is just one out away from getting the win, and the game-winning hit.

It is not to be. Next up is the .234 hitting SS Weawin Erreg, and on the second pitch Lowry uncorks a wild pitch that allows Caine to advance to third. Clearly rattled, Lowry then serves up a grapefruit of a pitch to Erreg, who lines it for a triple, easily scoring Caine.

Still, the Foxhounds are down a run and Lowry only needs one out. And who’s at the plate? This couldn’t be more perfect, for its none other than the Foxhounds pitcher, Kulttok Pured, who gave up two in the top of the frame. Should be an easy out for Lowry, but his nerves are shot. His second pitch is in the dirt and gets by the catcher for a passed ball, allowing Erreg to score. Game tied.

By this point Lowry is an emotional wreck on the mound. Unexplicably, the Fischer Cats manager, Ronnel Tanner, leaves him in. Bad idea. Lowry proceeds to give up a single to the pitcher Pured, then a walk-off double to 3B Reggy Joth that drives in Pured from first.

Lowry stalks off the mound as the Foxhounds celebrate around Joth and Pured at the plate. Tanner faces a lot of tough questions from the media afterwards, and Lowry leaves the lockerroom without comment.

And that, my friends, is the beauty of Base-ball on the Continent of Setheridge. Pured was the goat one minute, the hero the next. Lowry went from hero to goat just as quickly. And a game that featured two last-place teams suddenly meant a lot to both teams. And a lot, as well, to the 22,884 fans who stayed for all 15 innings at Bragbinney Stadium.

Its been a month since my last dynasty report and I candidly admit I've lost interest. I spent a ton of time (months) creating the league to my liking, devising its history, making logos, setting up the league file for both the SIP and ALE. And then I flipped the 'On' switch and my interest began to wane.

I'd like suggestions if anyone has them on reviving my interest. Because if I'm not interested, why should y'all be? .

Perhaps part of it is that I've not taken over a team, and I'm just simming weeks at a team as commissioner, then doing write ups of interesting things. It all just blurs by. Maybe I should take over a team and play out the games.

Thoughts anyone? To those who have done dynasties only as commissioners, not GMs, how do you maintain your interest?

Any advice would be appreciated.

The planning and creation phase of dynasties can be the most fascinating. But that ends...then what? I've experienced what you have with a few creations myself.

If it were my dynasty, I'd think about Setheridge in greater detail - what makes each country and city unique, how are the customs and people different. It's your world so you can make it whatever appeals to you. If you care about the places you've created and that interests you, it will interest your readers to know the nature of this world too. Let's face it; the game of baseball in OOTP is very similar in real and fictional leagues. But a fictional world is what some readers want to know more about. IMO

To me stats and games are secondary and stories are the thing that drive a dynasty. The more I know the background and the world the people live in, the easier it is to explain what happens to players, managers, sportswriters, etc.

But even then you'll experience lulls. But one's imagination eventually kicks in if you know your world well. Half the fun for me is exploring the world I create. Sometimes its better to tell the story of the leagues broadly and sometimes to concentrate on individuals and teams in greater detail.

Another thought is to concentrate on only one league. You have a lot of teams and lots of players to juggle right now.

I've thought about simming 20 years or so before I started too. But I think it's better sometimes to begin with the beginning of the league and play a year at a time and then later maybe sim ahead a decade or so. But everyone has their preferences.

Good luck with your dynasty. i'd be a shame to toss out all your hard work.

Mike

Agree, keeping the focus on what makes your world unique is very important.

You mentioned things feeling like a blur-slow up the pace a little. Finding the right speed for your dynasty can be tricky.

I think you nailed it. The world really exists in my head, but all I've been writing about are the game-generated results, and that seems almost separate. I had assumed that once I put the building blocks of the world in place, it would automatically come alive within the game. But it doesn't. I need to keep creating the world as I sim.

Thanks for steering me in the right direction. Now I have to brainstorm....

hawaiiansky is right.

Learning about your world is what most interests me. Baseball/OOTP should just be the ride from one story to the next.

Maybe talk about a team's location, why they are called what they are, why the are popular or not. Why is Team X more hated than the Yankees? Why does Player X wish success for Team Y even though he has never played for them? What about some fans?

Just talking about your world/country you've created is great as it's unique from other dynasties on this board. Use OOTP as a reason for the reader to learn about your world and perhaps fall in love with a certain team or city that will keep them coming back.

At the end of the day though, writing a dynasty should be for you and you alone. Even if you aren't getting any readers, it's always better if you enjoy writing it.

As for other ideas, something that I'm doing with my Islands is have two saves. One where I manage a team and sim games (currently in 2035 atm) and the other, which I consider the "real" scores. I sim this one day per every real day. So its the 25th of March 2012 as of typing this. And in game it's the 25th of March 2012 (I'm really looking forward to OOTP13 when the real time scores thing comes in!). The latter of the two is the one I am going to do a dynasty on. I'm just going to focus on the Super League and if I have a couple of days with nothing interesting, then I will talk about the rest of the league and anything interesting about the Koana Islands.

Hope that helps!

I like the one day sim each real day idea a lot. I also have been thinking about exploring the societal/political aspects of the world and of the league. Your post may be the jumpstart I need....

First off, i'm really late to this thread. But i must say. This is awesome!
The map!
The teams!
The logos!
The back story!
The website!
Awesome!
Of course, i'm biased. i love fictional worlds. But yours is up there with the Metro and Islandia Leagues.

A couple of suggestions for this, doing month to month or even year to year updates may become tedious. The temptation with OOTP is to sim ahead to see what happens next. i've been planning to do a similar fictional world myself. And i think i've decided to go ahead and sim several seasons. And then look back and see what stories have developed.

Check your awards and see how what the award winners careers were like. Maybe a Rookie of the Year player never had another good season. (Like Super Joe Charboneau) Or you find a Batter of the Year or Pitcher of the Year that never had a good season before or after that season.

Check the seasons and track who finishes first and second. Maybe a rivalry developed where the same teams were battling for a playoff spot. Or the same teams met in the playoff for three or four years. Maybe there's a team that had only one playoff appearance. And you can go back and piece together why the team succeeded in that one season; or why it failed in the other years.

i've even enjoyed trying "to make sense" of the AI's moves. You can fictionalize why a player kept getting cut. Or the odd trade.

In other words, instead of taking an ESPN Sports Center view of your league. Take an ESPN 30 at 30 view or a Ken Burns view of your league.

i tried that with our old online league (Laseron Baseball) that was a fictional world league. It can be fun to look back.

Anyway, great work with the set up.

Many thanks. I haven't updated in a while, though I just recently simmed through the end of the 2323 season.

Yes, that's what I found. I admire those dynasty writers who are able to do this.

Thanks Dark House for all great ideas. I will tuck them away.

I have, for now, decided on a much more ambitious 'reboot' for my stalled SIP and ALE league. I'm going to try writing a novel set in this world. Initially that will involve writing out a backstory for the entire world, and base-ball's role in it. I hope to post portions of the backstory in this thread. So, more to come....

I remember a Laseron reboot not too long ago.... did that get going?

Sadly, the Laseron reboot stalled. i'm tempted to create a fictional world and give it to the group to use...

i have a fictional world already created but i've grown attached to it. i have teams, logos, jerseys, caps and a backstory. But i have to work on the world_default.xml file.

It's too bad that the request that "everyone with an Amazon account to visit the page for Dunn’s book and nominate it for publication by Thursday, Jan. 7" became known, to me at least, only with the newsletter sent out yesterday. I see Amazon has notified that "Campaign has ended. This book was not selected for publication." Looks like an interesting book.

Hey, thanks! Yup, the book wasn't chosen but I do appreciate the support from folks here and at OOTP Developments.

I had created a thread about the book's campaign here in the General forum but perhaps I should have bumped this thread in the Dynasty forum as well. I guess I didn't want to be too shameless in the begging-for-support category .

So -- the good news is that I will be self-publishing it, and it should be available in a month or so. I will let everyone know!
