Worst Start Ever - 1908

I read a pretty cool concept on the site a while ago how someone started a historical 1901, piloted the worst team until championship and then took over the worst team at that time and so on.

I decided to do the same thing with a combination of simmed and played out games. Taking over the 1901 Milwaukee Brewers turned St Louis Browns, it took me 6 seasons to finally bring the crown home after making it to the World Series 3 different times and building quite a powerhouse of a team.

In 1907, I took over the lowly Washington Senators who had a record of 62-92 in 1906 with rookie Walter Johnson as the only player higher than 1.5 stars in the entire organization.

As you can imagine, 1907 was a rough year especially when Johnson went down for 4.5 months with a should injury in April. I had a great draft, picking up great players overlooked by other teams, including Shoeless Joe, Smoky Joe Wood (1st overall pick), Hippo Vaughn and Josh Devore. With a few trades, my team didn't look too bad. We finished last with a record of 52-102. Smoky Joe went down with a Tommy John injury and was lost in September for 13 months, but I was still optimistic about 1908 and also having the 1st round pick again.

The 1908 season started and things all went wrong right from the beginning. In the first week, I lost CF Fred Snodgrass and SP Hippo Vaughn to injuries. But even worse, I became completely plagued with 1-run losses. By the end of April, I am 3-12. The more amazing stat out of the 2-10 start is my record of 1-10 in 1-run games with 4 of the losses coming in the 9th inning. Walter Johnson is 0-4 with a 2.91 ERA and my lone hitter above .300 is Josh Devore at .351 among a team batting average of .217

It's going to be a long season...

Deadball Frustrations

I find the deadball era frustrating but very enjoyable.

There are so many one run games. The hit and run really makes the difference in many of them.

I'll enjoy following your league.

I don't post often due to work, but I will try to keep the thread going and entertaining.

If you take over the Marlins you can have a fire sale and start over.

Except the Marlins actually had something to sell.

Yeah, it just caused me to hit into a triple play...

Batting: SHB Sport McAllister 0-0: Lines into TRIPLE play, 7-4-3 (Line Drive, 7M)

And I loss the game 3-2.

After starting the season 3-12, I actually had a winning record for the month of May at 14-13 and have moved into 7th place. It is mostly due to my pitching. My starters have an ERA of 1.94, 2nd in the league.

The offense is still terrible at .224 with only rookie LF Josh Devore hitting well at .378. The next highest batter is CF Fred Snodgrass hitting .258.

I have improved to 8-18 in 1-run games.

June turned out to be a good month. I went 15-10 and had a good draft. I picked up C Chief Meyers (1st overall), 1B Stuffy McInnis, SS Art Fletcher, 1B Fred Luderus, SS Steve Yerkes.

I have a couple of good first baseman, thinking I could use them to trade for some other positions I need to fill. Still have to get a quality second baseman. Josh Devore is hitting .364 to lead the hitters. The averages are starting to come up for the top of the order.

I got hammered with injuries to my starting pitching. Jack Chesbro went down 4-5 months with a broken elbow. Hippo Vaughn went down 4-5 months with a torn labrum. Both pitchers were hurt in the beginning of June. Smoky Joe Wood is still out from last season from Tommy John surgery. My patched rotation has Walter Johnson (8-8, 1.91), Joe McGinnity (5-4, 1.93), Ed Killian (5-8, 2.50), Noodles Hahn (2-2, 1.67). Losing Vaughn (7-3, 1.80) hurt the most. Amazingly, the staff ERA is 3rd in the league and I am 1st in the league in both Hits and Runs given up.

Haven't posted in a week, but things turned around pretty well.

July saw me go 15-11 and move as high as 4th place in the standings. It was all on the strength of the pitching which really carried the team all year, despite not having 3 of my top starters for most of the season.

In August, we went 14-12 and dropped to 5th place in the standings. September was a little rough at 13-13. October was 5-4 to finish the season at 79-75, a 27-win improvement over my first year as manager.

All in all, a pretty good second season, finishing tied for 4th with pitching ranked 3rd in the league and batting ranked 5th in the league.

Josh Devore cooled off in the 2nd half of the season, but finished with a team leading .311 AVG, while Fred Snodgrass picked it up in the second half to finish at .307 in his first full season.

Walter Johnson settled in with a 22-15, 2.00 ERA season. He had 8 1-run losses.

My old team, the St Louis Browns made it to the World Series, but lost in 7 games to the Phillies. I could clearly see the AI completely mishandled the pitchers in the series, pitching their worst starter twice (and lost twice) in the series, while aces Three-Finger Brown and Orvie Overall did not pitch at all in the series. The Browns led the majors with a 1.84 ERA with a rotation of Jack Pfiester (33-19, 1.89 ERA), Three Finger Brown (17-9, 1.58 ERA), Orvie Overall (17-8, 1.53 ERA), Rube Waddell (13-10, 2.11 ERA), and Frank Smith (12-10, 1.89 ERA).

For the season, I was 32-34 in 1-run games. A lot of those were blown in the 9th inning too.

Been a while since I updated, but I am now in 1919. To give a quick 12 year review:

1908 - I made a decent season out of my horrible start in 1908 to finish 79-75 in 4th place, 15 GB.

1909 - Dominated the season going 106-48, but lost in the World Series in seven games to the Cardinals.

1910 - Good season at 94-60, but finished in 2nd place, 14 GB an incredibly dominant Browns team.

1911 - Finally got back on top with a 102-52 and won my 2nd World Series. After 11 seasons, there is only 1 season I have had a losing record. This would change.

1912 - I took over the Chicago White Sox, who were the worst team in 1911, and promptly posted my second losing record at 69-85 in 7th place, 28 GB.

1913 - Another losing season at 64-90 in 7th Place, 37 GB.

1914 - Another losing season at 72-82 in 5th Place, 22 GB, but an improvement.

1915 - My 4th straight losing season at 73-81 in 5th Place, 21 GB.

1916 - The division was weak as I finished on top at 89-66 beating Philadelphia in a 1-game playoff to decide the pennant and miraculously won my 3rd World Series in 7 games after being down 3-1.

1917 - I took over the crosstown Chicago Cubs, the worst team in 1916 and posted a 71-83 season, in 7th place, 14.5 GB.

1918 - Posted another 71-83 season in 5th place, 23 GB. This made losing seasons in 6 of my last 7 seasons.

1918 Rule 5 Draft

Not usually anything going on for the Rule 5 and then I noticed a few diamonds in the rough.

LF Jack Smith was available and I took him in the 1st round #6. After 9 games, he is hitting .366 in the leadoff spot.

1B High Pockets Kelly was taken 2nd round #6 and is hitting .200 in part time play, playing mostly at SS.

SP Urban Shocker was somehow left unprotected and I snatched him up in the 3rd round #6 and is 1-1 with a 3.71 ERA in my starting rotation.

SP Jim Bagby Sr was taken 4th round #6 and is 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in 1 start. Not sure if I am going to keep him yet and use him as a mopup or EM starter.

I think I have great potential this year with my rotation. My starting rotation now consists of:

1) Pete Alexander - 32 YO
2) Bob Shawkey - 28 YO
3) Urban Shocker - 28 YO
4) Waite Hoyt - 19 YO

I almost was able to get Eddie Cicotte. I had a trade approved, but then I changed how ratings were done in the league settings and when I went back to the trade, what I was offering was longer good enough. Oh well.
