Adjusted nations.txt file

Thought I'd share my slightly tweaked nations.txt file with more realistic (IMHO) Baseball Levels.

Using a terrifying complicated formula (weighing things like: strength of domestic league (if any); performance in the WBC, Baseball World Cup and the Olympics; and number of players in MLB), I jiggered some of the ratings.

Actually, most of them stayed the same: most of the zeroes are still zeroes. All countries with domestic leagues and/or are members of the IBAF got at least a 1.

Highlights: South Korea was bumped from a 4 to 5; Netherlands, 3 to 4; Spain gets some love (an inexplicable zero to 2); China slides from 4 to 3; Aruba drops from 3 (!!) to 1; Costa Rica 4 to 2 (they're surrounded by good baseball countries, but they aren't one themselves); Argentina and Chile both drop from 3 to 2; and Scotland jumps from zero to 1! Yea!

Anyway...enjoy! (Just copy and paste into your nations.txt file; rename the original file "orig_nations.txt" first...)

According to Dogzilla in this thread: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...d.php?t=121394 , the frequencies come out to be this:

5 rating (excellent) about 500 per country
4 (good) about 130
3 (average) about 90
2 (fair) about 2.5
1 (poor) about 1.0
0 (non-existent) game never generates players from countries with 0

With a Baseball Level of 1 producing only 1 player out of...well, we don't know how many, but...does anyone else feel like I do that almost NO countries should be given a 0 Baseball Level? Are we so sure that there will NEVER be a player from Afghanistan? There will never be a talented kid from Afghanistan who finds himself in The States and picks up the game--even if he only makes it to Single A ball?

I've changed my own nations.txt, but I thought I'd throw this out there.

At this point, you are talking theology. What's so cool is that people with diammetrically opposed viewpoints can play the same game their way by a simple modding of nations.txt.

BTW, I learn towards your point of view.

There's already been one: Jeff Bronkey.

5 rating (excellent) about 500 per country

Using 0-5 is way too imprecise for me...I would've prefered 0-100, or at least 0-10....something like this:

10 (USA)
9 (Japan, Cuba, Dom Rep)
8 (Other countries with strong professional leagues, i.e. South Korea)
7 (Countries with medium-level leagues, like Canada, Taiwan, Netherlands)
6 (Lower-level leagues, like China, Austraila)
5 (Decent amateur leagues: most of Europe, etc.)
4 (Emerging amateur leagues, like South Africa)
3 (No league, but in strong baseball area: Guatemala, Costa Rica)
2 (No league, but member of IBAF: Armenia, Serbia, Ghana)
1 (No league, not an IBAF member, decent-sized country: Paraguay, Iraq)

Really, Baseball Level shouldn't be an integer. It should have just been relative percentages like the name files.

USA 5000
.
.
.
Iraq 3
Afghanistan 2

I'm going to see if I can convince him to do what Bobble suggested in next year's version.

Thanks for the list, RMC

I was tweaking it for my own universe and noticed something strange about Iceland. I know there's 0 baseball there, but the next digit is also a 0! If I'm reading that right, it mean's 80 percent of the names for Iceland will be from the American file. I'm sure it should be 10 for Norway.

Many nations were set to 0 to represent Americans being born overseas, and also because there are only so many name sets.

If you use 10, are you pleased with the results?

That's a generous way to put it. Honestly, we used 0 in most cases where we didn't have a valid matching nameset. In this case, Icelandic names. Feel free to change it to your heart's content.

I wonder if it would be difficult to raise the cap of 40 name sets? I could use more...

I googled language in Iceland and this was at the top:

Icelandic is a Northern Germanic language with about 300,000 speakers in Iceland (═sland), Canada (Kanada) and the USA (BandarÝki Norur-AmerÝku). Icelandic is the closest of the Northern Germanic languages to Old Norse and it is possible for Icelandic speakers to read the Old Norse sagas in the original without too much difficulty.

So, I would just use the Norwegian set. Not that it matters, since Iceland has a zero for baseball.

Not if George Patton and the First US Army Group occupy the place in 1938 to preempt the Nazi's from having a mid North Atlantic harbor to sortie their fleet and subs from, and the locals take a major liking to all things American.

Ooops, too much alternate reality seeping through.

Did you think I would let Eiur Smßri Gujohnsen play soccer?

There's already been one: Jeff Bronkey.

5 rating (excellent) about 500 per country
4 (good) about 130
3 (average) about 90
2 (fair) about 2.5
1 (poor) about 1.0
0 (non-existent) game never generates players from countries with 0

0 (Tiny country, no baseball ever: Tuvalu, Kiribati, Antaractica)
If I saw OOTP generate Jeff Bronkey and saw Afghanistan as his home, I'd think it was a bug. Jeff Bronkey just doesnt sound like he's from Afghanistan to me. Honestly, he most likely did not hone his baseball skills while still there. I'd think his family moved back to the States before that happened, making him more American than Afghany (sp) anyway.

Many obscure nations use the 0 ( American ) nameset to cover such eventualities.

J. Bronkey

according to baseball-reference.com (http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/bronkje01.shtml)

Born September 18, 1965 in Kabul, Afghanistan

He pitched at Oklahoma State.

Others from outliers (http://www.baseball-reference.com/bio/other_born.shtml)

My favorite is Ed Porray (http://www.baseball-reference.com/p/porraed01.shtml) who must have been born while his family was immigrating.
