Giving the random debut thing a try this year

Background: I created a league set in 1871 but with 1977 ballparks and 24 teams/162 game schedule, DH in both leagues. I kept the 1871 players and am running a draft with enough random historical players to bring every team to 40 players. I will be doing 5-year recalc with increased weight on current year if it works with random debut (if not I will switch to the OOTP talent engine). All players entering the league will be edited so they are 21 years old or younger and after the first year we will only draft 5-10 new players per team per year.

Pitching settings will be kept at 4 man rotations and normal pitching stamina every year, I am using a random number generator to decide the year to base the league totals on every year (random year between 1885 and 2019) for first year I rolled 2003 so expect a lot of homers. Probably no free agency and minimal trading (just to make things easier for the AI to handle) but am not totally sure on that yet Very hard trading settings.

I will be playing the Expos. Setting up the initial draft now.

Notable in draft. The Astros take Ross Barnes, the Indians get Cap Anson and then in the entry draft the Red Sox mirror history by making Tris Speaker the first pick followed by Rafael Palmero to the Braves and Jim Palmer to the Brewers. My Expos thought a while between Reggie Smith and Zack Wheat but decided to go for Smith.
.

The computer likes the Orlando Cepeda-led Cubs and Anson-led Indians to make our first World series it also thinks Speaker is going to hit 53 HR and .355 in modern Fenway while Cepeda puts up a triple crown type season in Wrigley and 19th Century pitchers Ed Cushman and Bobby Matthews win the Cy Young. We shall see.

Game of the month for April: Doug Drabek tosses the leagues first no -hitter pitching for the Orioles against Oakland. He walked only 1, narrowly missing a perfect game and needed only 92 pitches to mow down the A's.

Tight very early races with 5 teams tied atop the AL at 7-4 and the Reds
pacing the NL at 8-3 by 1 game. Todd Walker of the Giants is off to a .489 start on the young season while the Expos have been inconsistent out of the gate but own a decent 6-5 record and third place.
.
On to May.

May 31st 1871 -
League Leaders - Toronto [29-10] 3.5 games ahead of Boston
Cincinnati [23-14] 1 game up on the Giants
Pitchers of Month: AL: Alan Mills [TOR] (6-0 1.70) NL: Willie Mitchell [MIL] (5-1 1.21)
Batters of the Month: AL: Tris Speaker [BOS] (.429 9HR 25 RBI) in May
NL: Ray Demmitt [PIT] (378 11HR 30RBI in May)

Spotlight games: The Dodgers ace Ed Cushman struck out 20 batters in a game in *two* May starts. He pitched an 11.2 innings of shutout ball against the Cardinals but didn't get the win as his team coould not score until they finally won the game in the 18th inning 3-0 so Cushman took out his frustration on the Phillies later in the month once again striking out 20 batters and pitching a CG shutout, still not getting much support but this time winning 1-0.
Expos fall to 16-22 in May and look like they are headed to a rough opening season. Batting .222 as a team is not going to cut it and the pitching hasn't been great either.

June 30, 1871

League Leaders - Toronto [47-20] 7 GA of Cleveland
Cincinnati [43-22] 7.5 GA of the Mets
Batter of month: AL: Tris Speaker [BOS] [.337 7HR 21 RBI]
Pitcher of month AL: Mark Mulder [CWS] 5-1 1.28
Batter of Month NL: Ray Demmitt [PIT] .355 [11 HR 30RBI] (Demmitt has been a huge surprise boasting a line on the season of .357 23HR 68RBI. Not bad for a guy who played 3 full seasons in the deadball era}
Pitcher of the Month NL: Ed Cushman [ LAD] 6-1 1.47 for a total line of 11-3 1.70
Game Spotlight: The Pirates George Zettlein no hit the Astros on June 5, striking out 11 and facing 28 batters. I had thought with 2003 settings we would have more offense but early on we are seeing a lot of dominant pitching performances. The Reds Dick McBride also no-hit the Phillies on June 4

The Expos continue to scuttle along at 30-36 with injuries to severe 3 starting pitchers not helping things...

July 31, 1871:
Blue Jays and Reds continue to roll... League Leaders AL TOR [60-33] 6 GA of CWS NL CIN [61-32 8.5 up on the Dodgers]
NL Pitcher of Month - George Davies [CIN] 5-0 in July to go 13-2 2.11 over-all; NL Batter of the Month Dennis Casey [ATL] .344 8HR 22 RBI
AL Pitcher of the Month Chris Van Cuyk [BAL] 4-0 0.90 ERA in July, has a 1.77 ERA on the season.
AL Hitter of the Month: Homer Smoot .439 with 3 HR to improve his season average to .359 to edge out Speaker's .356 for the batting lead.
Game spotlight: Some offense for a change as Colby Rasmus went deep 3 times and drove in 7 to help the Cubs pound the Mets 13-4 on July 15th.

Expos sit at 44-49. Reggie Smith and Addison Russell are having good seasons and the emergence of Carl Erskine and Frank Fleet as solid starters has helped the pitching staff but our pitchers can not stay healthy. at least Hi West and Steve McCatty will be back in a week (both have been out for months)

Aug. 31 1871

The leagues tighten up a bit but the 74-47 Blue Jays still hold a 4.5 game lead over the Tigers and White Sox and the 77-45 Reds enjoy a 4.5 game lead over the Dodgers
Chuck Smith of the Dodgers goes 6-0 in August with a 1.59 ERA to grab pitcher of the month while the Reds Carl Reynolds hit .391 with 8 HR to nab NL batter of the month. In the AL, Blue Jays ace Bobby Mathews was untouchable going 6-1 with an amazing 0.66 ERA to push his season line to 16-8 2.03 while Boston’s Tris Speaker takes batter of the month Speaker is having a fine first season hitting .357 with 34 HR and 102 RBIs and still about 40 games left to improve on those numbers.
Spotlight game. The Blue Jays Bobby Matthews struck out 20 Orioles on Aug. 13 while only allowing one hit and pitching a complete game shutout. The Expos did not have a great month, slipping to 56-66.

OCT. 15 1871
The division races got a bit dicy but both the Blue Jays and Reds hang on to take the first pennants as the Dodgers fall short by 1 game and Tigers by 3. The Jays have a very strong pitching staff led by Bobby Mathews and a potent offense highlighted by Giancarlo Stanton’s 44 HR while the Reds have Tony Oliva anchoring their offense but have suffered a bit as their ace pitcher George Davies is on the DL.
Tris Speaker of the Red Sox had a monster season winning the triple crown in the AL with .359 49 HR 130 RBI .417 OBP 10.9 WAR

Oct 25, 1871:The Blue Jays sweep the Reds in the 1871 World Series while shutting them out 3 times.

The Champs:

Awards:
AL Babe Ruth Award [MVP] Tris Speaker(BOS) On the season he compiled a .359 batting average to go with a .417 on-base percentage. The native of Hubbard, Ohio also added 26 doubles, 4 triples, 49 home runs, 130 RBIs and 110 runs scored.

NL Babe Ruth Award: Ed Cushman [LAD] winning 26 and losing 8. He threw 349.1 innings, fanned 574, allowed 208 hits and 109 walks, while holding opposing teams to a .169 average as he logged an impressive 1.62 ERA.

AL Cy Young: Bobby Mathews [TOR] compiled a 24-12 record in 42 starts, tallied 570 strikeouts in 322.1 innings and recorded a 1.95 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .167 batting average against him

NL Cy Young - Cushman

NL Ted Williams [best position player] Award - Ross Barnes [ HOU] with .338 .403 OBP and gold glove second baseman.

AL Ted Williams Award - Speaker.

The Expos have a somewhat disappointing 75-87 first season.

Next year we go all the way back to 1893 for the league totals. From what I remember from 1890s sims we may see some crazy high batting averages next year.

Cleveland’s Cap Anson hitting .410 and the Cubs’ Orlando Cepeda at .405, Cubs Colby Rasmus has .61 RBI while the Astros Ross Barnes has already racked up 3.6 WAR. On the pitching side, Chan Ho Park of the Orioles had the best ERA in the majors at 2.04 but sadly for him he is injured for the rest of the season. The Red Sox Bobby Wallace has a 2.07 ERA. The Pirates, Earl Whitehill has 11 wins. I’m kind of glad strikeouts are not as crazy as last year. The league leader Ben Tincup has 80 Ks so doubtful we will have any 500K + performances this year.

July 1st: June Batters of Month: Dave Eggler (MIN) .462 25 runs score and Erubiel Durazo (PIT) .346 10 HR
June Pitchers of the Month: Doug Drabek (BAL) 6-0 2.20 and Brad Lidge (HOU) 6-0 1.34

Aug 1st: July Batters of the Month: Ross Barnes (HOU) .375 28 runs scored and Davy Force (BAL) .468 23 RBI 23 Runs.

July Pitchers of the Month: Jack Lamabe (SEA) 5-2 2.17 and Ricky Trilcek (PHI) 3-0 0.90 5 saves.

Aug. 5 Reds catcher Bobby Knapp hits for the cycle.

Aug. 16 Rusty Greer of the Giants bangs out 6 hits against league-leading Dodgers.

The A’s open up a 6 game lead on the Orioles the 72 win A’s boast the AL’s best offense led by OF Pete Gillespie and a solid if unspectacular pitching staff anchored by Dave Stieb.

Over in the NL, after missing the World Series by one game last year the Dodgers [65-43] have surged into the NL lead behind great pitching by Ed Cushman, Chuck Smith and Charlie Case and a nice performance by rookie 1B Harry Taylor. Pittsburgh is right there though, only one game out and the Cubs and Cardinals are still hanging around at all. Looks like a close nailbiter in the NL again. The Expos muddle along at 50-58 and probably need another star or two to emerge to really make a run. The pitching for the Expos was solid last year but is absolutely terrible this year with every starter but Frank Fleet having an ERA above 5.50.

Homers may be down substantially this year but offense is up in every other form with Orlando Cepeda currently batting .425 for the Cubs while Cleveland’s Cap Anson has a .575 OBP and Houston’s Ross Barnes OBP is “only” .556 while Phillies OF Gat Stires somehow has 34 triples.

Mets rookie Reggie Cleveland is putting together a good season with 13 wins and a 2.73 ERA while Boston’s Bobby Wallace has been one bright spot in a bad Red Sox season with a 2.79 ERA. Wallace is a two-way player better known for his hitting but it will be interesting what the Sox management decides to do with him going forward.

Pitchers of the Month Dave Stieb (OAK) 4-1 2.42 and Dick McBride (CIN) 7-0 3.28 Batters of the Month: Orlando Cepeda (CHC) .510 29 RBI and Levi Meyerle (NYY) .436 35 RBI

Oct. 1 Batter of the month for September: Giancarlo Stanton (TOR) .454 9HR and Mitch Moreland (PHI) .475 8HR; Pitchers of Month: Frank Arellanes (CHC) 5-0 1.52 and Rich Hill (CWS) 6-0 0.74

Oct. 15: A’s cruise to the AL pennant winning 111 games while scoring 1150 runs. Tough luck for the Tigers who win 104 but finish a distant second. In the NL the Cubs jump out to a 4 game lead with a couple of weeks to go but the blow it and the 95-win Mets swoop in to grab the pennant by one game. So Mets vs heavily favored A’s in the second World Series Also of note Orlando Cepeda ends up with a .432 batting average. Possibly a record that will stand for a while and both Barnes and Anson ended with a .556 OBP.

The A’s grabbed a 2-0 lead in the best of 9 series but the Underdog Mets came back to win 4 of the next 5. Then, in Game 8 both teams scored 4 runs in their final at-bat but the Mets held on to win 11-10 and shock the A’s in the series 5-3.

Congrats to the 1872 Champions:

Cy Young Award

During his remarkable year, Mike Fornieles of the Mets posted a 18-9 record in 32 starts. In 253 innings he yielded 226 hits and 108 walks while striking out 134 and compiling a fine 2.92 ERA.

The Red Sox' Bobby Wallace compiled a 14-11 record in 32 starts, tallied 131 strikeouts in 223.2 innings and recorded a 2.49 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .222 batting average against him. Sadly Wallace also suffered a career-ending injury on Sep. 20 so this award will be his last.

Babe Ruth Award [MVP] and Ted Williams Award for Best Position Player:

On the season Ross Barnes of the Astros compiled a .374 batting average to go with a .556 on-base percentage. The native of The United States also added 27 doubles, 14 triples, 5 home runs, 104 RBIs and 157 runs scored.

Playing for Cleveland, Cap Anson had a .362 batting average and a .556 on-base percentage this year. In 159 games he piled up 189 hits, 29 doubles, 20 triples, no home runs, 75 RBIs and 154 runs scored.

Jackie Robinson Award (Rookie of the Year):

20-year-old starter Rich Hill registered a 26-8 record in his first Major League season with the White Sox: in 43 starts. Over 313.1 innings he gave up 265 hits, struck out 227 and issued 129 walks as he held the opposition to a .225 batting average and fashioned a 3.07 ERA.

t wasn't a stroke of good luck that got Pittsburgh's Erubiel Durazo the 1872 National League Jackie Robinson Award, it was his skill on the field. The gifted first baseman performed well with a .336 batting average while playing in 161 games and delivering 213 hits in 634 at-bats. His totals also included 23 home runs, 163 RBIs, 134 runs scored, 147 walks and a .462 OPB.

Just an update that sadly when I advanced to 1873 the league totals got a bug where no matter how I adjust them league stats are all out of wack. (very few homers and strikeouts even if the totals are set to allow a lot) I have no idea how to fix this. I have tried everything I can think of. So I will have to either wait to see if a patch fixes it or start the league again (which is a ton of work to set up.). I suppose I could sim through the season with the messed up totals and see if advancing another season fixes it but I don't really want to do that as it is pretty ridiculous to have like one strikeout per game.

Last patch finally appears to have corrected the issue with my save so I will resume writing about and playing this league.

Current League date July, 1 1873

1873 Rookie draft: Boston gets "Rock" Raines to go along with Speaker in their outfield.

1. Tim Raines Sr. OF/2B (BOS)
2. Rube Vickers P (MIL)
3. Darrell Evans 3B (TOR)
4. John Valentin SS (ATL)
5. Nick Altrock P (SEA)
6. John Candelaria P (MON)
7. Ed Cogswell 1B (CIN)
8. Jameson Taillon P (LAA)
9. Mike Mansell OF (CLE)
10. Nomar Mazara OF (NYY)

Pennant Races: The Expos get some great play from their rookie pitcher Candelaria as well as suprising hitting hereoes Joey Meyer and Damon Mashore.
I don't know if it will last, especially as Candelaria just got sent to the DL for 6 weeks but the Expos at 47-20 lead the NL by 2 over the Reds. Meanwhile in the AL the A's are allready looking strong to repeat their pennant. Rolling at 50-17 Oakland holds a 9 game edge on the Tigers.

Batters of the Month: Zack Wheat (PHI), George Wright (OAK), Dennis Casey (ATL), Hub Collins (SEA)
Pitchers of the Month :Ralph Terry (LAD), Candy Cummings (WAS),Oscar Jones (NYM), Lucas Harrel (OAK)

League leaders: Wins: Dave Stieb (OAK) 13 and Matt Young (MON) 10
ERA Mark Buerhle MIL 3.22 and Scott Karl (BOS) 3.53
OPS Eric Hinske (DET) 1.130 and Damon Mashore (MON) 1.031
Batter WAR Eric Hinske (DET) 3.4) and Colby Rasmus (CHC) 3.3
