Any idea what I've done wrong?

I decided to try out random debut for the first time and I think I've managed to do something stupid. The initial set up was fine - used 1945 as the start year and ticked to only use 1901 players onwards.

Initial draft was fine - some decent players at the tail end of their career, but I decided I could live with that. After the start of the season I sorted all players by their potential and it showed those without a team who I assume are scheduled for the first year draft at the end of the season. These players are not showing at the age they made their debuts but far older. For example, Barry Bones is listed as a 31 year old high schooler. Maybe he's a teacher.

Any idea what I've done?

I'm in challenge mode so there's no tinkering I can do with ages, sadly.

I believe random debut doesnt just include a random player in history but also a random age in which he will make his debut. Makes it a little harder when you have to decide between a 26 yr old Willie Mays or a 32 yr old Willie Mays.

Ah - I knew that was the case for the inaugural draft, but I thought subsequent drafts featured players at the age they made their debuts.

Yeah, the subsequent drafts after the inaugural does almost exclusively include players at the start of their career - in most cases a few years before they made it to the major leagues. The inaugural draft does usually include quite a few veterans near the end of their careers. Not sure why that weird age thing happened

Sounds like something is wrong with your setup. Do you have import rookies selected?

First ensure that it is actually the next draft class you are looking at. Right click and verify you can't sign him as a Free Agent. As said, players will almost always generate at or near their debut age so a 31 year old Barry Bonds would be an issue.
When sorting all players as you described, it is not possible to tell a free agent from a future draftee (both will have '-' for team) so without more information my thought would be that you were actually looking at a Free Agent.

I restarted the game in the end - I think it had something to do with me moving the amateur draft date to just before the start of the season, because when I left it as December there were no issues.
