Database Ratings: Bill Brennan?
What are the main database's ratings for 1920s heavyweight Bill Brennan? This is what I found in my copy of Title Bout 2.0:
Not sure if this was the original version of Brennan. Cap

This is interesting. I matched the DB's Bill Brennan against my version of English heavyweight Tom Cowler 100 times in the Scheduler. Brennan won 56 bouts and Cowler won 40 with 4 draws.
In real life, they fought three times and Cowler won all three. In the last fight, at Buffalo, New York, Brennan entered the ring with a record of 25-4-1 and Cowler was 36-10-1. Cowler clearly outboxed Brennan over ten rounds. I'm thinking either Cowler needs an upgrade or Brennan is overrated. After the third loss to Cowler, Brennan won a string of fights, mostly against fringe contenders like Bartley Madden (2), Joe Bonds (2), Bob Devere, and Tom McMahon. He lost or drew with Battling Levinsky and Jim Coffey. Cowler won a couple then lost one to Frank Moran, four of his next five, all to Kid Norfolk (brilliant management?). It was all downhill from there. Cap

Based on my reading of newspaper accounts, Cowler was a pretty fair boxer with a good straight left, accurate punching, but not huge power, though he did manage a few first round KOs. In their third fight he dropped Bill Brennan in the 4th round with a short right to the jaw. He was KO'd in round one by Fred Fulton but it took a lot of punches and two knockdowns to do it. Frank Moran put him out with a right to the back of the head.
Cowler had 12 fights in 1917 winning five. (Compare that output to current heavyweights.) I currently have Cowler as a 6 overall but may upgrade him. I also have Brennan as a 6. I think his second fight with Dempsey was easily a career best performance. He had knockout power but a porous defence. Cap
