1967 and Beyond: An Alternative Boston Red Sox History

I am taking over the Boston Red Sox in 1967. Going forward there will be no draft, instead historical players will appear with their proper organizations in the proper season

Free agency has been turned on and the reserve clause has been turned off a decade early.

You can see all standings and boxscores here. I will use the forum for updates and also to answer questions you might have about certain players.

Yaz the Free Agent?

Carl Yastrzemski is about to begin his seventh season in Boston and with the new free agency rules it could be his last. The Players Union got a huge labor victory this offseason as the reserve clause was abolished setting the stage for the era of free agency. Yaz is 27 years old and entering his prime and because of his service time he will be granted free agency at the end of the 1967 season.

His next salary could set the market but nobody is quite sure just how high that market will be. The Red Sox reportedly have met with Yaz's agents about a long term deal but nothing appears to be imminent. One source close to the negotiations said Yastrzemski is looking for a ten year deal.

Lee Stange, John Wyatt, Don McMahon and Don Demeter are also set to be free agents at the end of the season for the Red Sox.

The Sox will open the 1967 season at home tomorrow as Jim Lonborg gets the start for the Red Sox. He will face the White Sox at Fenway and they will send Gary Peters to the mound

Red Sox Roll White Sox, 6-3

Full Boxscore and Standings

The Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox, 6-3, at Fenway Park. The win was largely due to the efforts of second baseman Mike Andrews, who captured player of the game honors. He went 3-3 with 2 doubles and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2.

Lee Stange, the winner, improved to 1-0. He held Chicago to 2 earned runs on 5 hits over 8.1 innings, while racking up 7 strikeouts. The Red Sox keep rolling, raising their record to 2-0. Andrews had a big at-bat with a runner on 3rd in the bottom of the fifth inning, when he hit a run-scoring double.

The Red Sox went on to win. Andrews attributed the win to "a well-rounded effort by the whole team."

Injury Update on Andrews and Wyatt

The Red Sox got some good news and some bad news on the injury front. John Wyatt had an MRI on his shoulder and it was clean. Red Sox team doctors have diagnosed him with a mild shoulder strain. A DL stint won't be needed. He will be listed day to day. Wyatt pitched one inning on Opening Day and did not appear in yesterday's game. Manager Dick Williams says they will use some caution with Wyatt over the next week.

The Red Sox did not get good news on Mike Andrews. Andrews had a huge day yesterday going 3-3 with two doubles. On one of those doubles he slid awkwardly into second base and had to leave the game. Andrews has a severe hip strain and could be out for approximately five weeks.

The Red Sox placed Andrews on the 30 day DL and called up catcher Russ Gibson. Gibson will join catchers Mike Ryan and Bob Tillman on the active roster. Dalton Jones is expected to get the majority of time at second base.

Yaz Wins AL Player of the Week

At the age of 27, Carl Yastrzemski might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Boston left fielder put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .476 batting average. For his efforts Yastrzemski collected the AL Player of the Week Award. He racked up 10 hits in 21 at-bats, no home runs and 2 RBIs last week in 5 games.

Tim McCarver of the St. Louis Cardinals, won the NL Player of the Week Award hitting .524 (11-for-21) with 2 home runs and 9 RBIs

Killebrew Finalizes Contract Extension with Minnesota

Minnesota fans celebrated as word of a signing became reality. Harmon Killebrew won't be pulling up stakes anytime soon, as he has signed a 7-year extension at a pay rate of $224,000 per annum.

Since he is widely seen as an integral part of the club, Minnesota officials had to keep Killebrew from jumping ship.

For the year Killebrew is batting .400 with 2 home runs, 5 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
