Hello all,
Long time hockey fan, but completely ignorant when it comes to how contracts work. I'm starting 2019 season with the Maple Leafs and was shocked at their current cap situation. I decided it might be best to lock in my best defensive players before the rest walk in free agency as it seems my predecessor leveraged the farm for 4 players.
When I approached a player to renew his contract I got the following message:
Quote:
I will become an unrestricted free agent and I'm currently earning $4,500,000.
I'd be more than willing to extend my contract with the team. I am seeking the following terms:
$4,930,000 and 3 year(s).

What does this mean contract wise? Is this player looking for 3 years @ $4.9 million, or does he expect 3 years @ $1.6 million?
Many thanks to anyone that can shed some light on how these contracts work. As a fan I've only understood the impact the player's yearly salary has on the cap for that year. I'm thinking I may have picked the wrong team to begin learning the ins and outs of being a general manager.
