Should a .400 Hitter Win the MVP?

Corey Giles is batting .415 but he is on a sub .500 team. There have been many .400 hitters in the EBL. While I always ask the AI who should win the MVP, I am torn if i should override it this year if need be.

Didich won the NL MVP in 2021
Parks did not win the AL MVP in 2023.
Nick Sullivan won the NL MVP in 2020 but not 2023.
Jussim did not win the AL MVP in 2023
Dan Toner won the AL MVP in 2022.
France won the AL MVP in 2004.
Hughes won the NL MVP in 2023.
Jussim did not win the AL MVP in 2025.
Skywalker did not win the AL MVP in 2004.
Wellington did not win the AL MVP in 2023.
Wicket did not win the AL MVP in 2010.
Parks did not win the AL MVP in 2022.
So history shows tht just because someone hit .400 does not mean they will win MVP but I am not a big fan of anyone else other then Wil D'Zinnik winning it.

Sure I look at batting average, and .415 stands out. But, I also look at OPS because that stat, I think, is the best overall gauge of batting performance. Based on OPS, I narrow the choices to D'Zinnik and Giles.

The next thing I do is look at Runs + RBI's because these are a good gauge of the scoreboard impact the player has had throughout the season. (Please, give me no grief about BABIP, WAR, and the like. Runs + RBI's are numbers that I don't need an expert to hand to me, saying "These are good numbers because my secret analysis says so.")

Three of your guys look good with Runs + RBI's. You know who does not look in this regard? Giles, the guy who hit .415. Big deal. Not an impact player in terms of scores and he also has the lowest PA's in the bunch. Did he even qualify for the batting title? No wonder he does not have a nickname yet.

I also note that D'Zinnik's team, the Marlboro Reds, has the second-best record in your AL. While I do not believe that the MVP Award must be given to a member of the championship team (else, just pick the best guy from the Endor City Capitals and give it to him), I do believe that MVP must be associated somewhat with team excellence. Another nail in Giles' coffin, being a member of the stinky Colortown Parrots.

So, if you don't give your MVP Award to D'Zinnik, I may have to virtually slap you with my purse.

I'd just hand him a custom award for reaching the .400 mark.

His relatively low PA's would bother me. Yes, he has more than the magic number of 502 (3.1 PA's x 162 games, assuming that's what The Game's league has scheduled) but his amount is 137, 185, and 110 less than the other three guys. Technically, sure, he batted .400 and he qualifies for that club, barely. But the MVP Award should go to D'Zinnik.

Deja, do you want to come up with a nickname for him? Years ago i used to say he was a cousin to Brian & Marcus Giles.

Between the low games played and the fact two of the other guys had superior numbers I'd have a hard time voting for the 415 hitter. That being said, if he'd played around 145 games, he'd likely have the best numbers, and I wouldn't punish him for playing on a sub 500 team. He'd still be the MVP even if his teammates suck.

Okay, for having batted .400 one year, he should be henceforth known as Corey "The Story" Giles.

Interesting post... I probably would vote for Bremer because he looks scary as f&#* and might come after you if he does not win.

Yeah, I was gonna say . . . In addition to that, Giles looks a bit too happy, you know? Like he's about to flip out. Wayne has that haunted look in his eyes, like "My parents were killed by a robber and I've hated humanity ever since!"

Still, I would give the MVP Award to D'Zinnik . . . and start running if those other guys were in the audience!

Bremer's season to me stands out as the best out of those four. The WAR plus the position with his counting stats...that's a fantastic season.

Though I definitely see the validity in the .400 hitter and Batman, a SS having that kind of season is darn impressive, but I still think Bremer's the all around best.

Brett is based on the GI Joe Hit & Run Brent Scott. I hated the named Brent so i changed it to Brett. He is also my fictional son when I got tired of playing with Gi Joes and turned them all into baseball players. i used a picture of a guy with camo face paint. He wears it to remember the members of the military who never came home to their families.

It's between D'Zinnik or Bremer for me. I don't care much for BA. If you want an all around great season I say you give it to D'Zinnik. If you like to reward elite power/speed guys you give it to Bremer. I'd give it to D'Zinnik.

i'm not a BA guy either, especially an arbitrarily choosen # like ".400." .399 is 1-2 hits less in a season? same thing to me. there's enough volatility and luck in results that the .399 could very easily be the 'better' BA, all things considered.

However, at some point even a difference in BA can be a good reason. for sake of ease, go on 500ab - a .050 difference is 25 hits in a season... xbh vs singles needs to be considered to weight that difference, too. (slugging is a terrible stat to compare players...and anything using it with simple addition/subtraction)

so, with that last caveat, a .050-.100 difference in BA can be offset by power... but it's 2 moving variables and both are important. since this is just about MVP, you pretty much have a 'good enough' BA to be fairly consistent.

-------

in this case, with all of the candidates you can find 1 glaring flaw or large enough difference in comparison to a particular candidate(wd-40) to be a 'flaw' relative to MVP voting.

the wd-40 guy has 1 very minor potential flaw, but it's even more minimal than BA being a bit lower than another candidate... he was terrible stealing bases, lol. 11 for 27? better adjust that guy's "player strategy" so he stops hurting the team for personal numbers. think ~70-72% is the break-even point or possibly when it's a net-positive for sure? i can't recall what i read anymore. the analysis on SB% is pretty solid math.. worth a google for the right info.

I'd chalk any other answer up to being irrationally enamored with a particular stat.... like a magic # BA. i may not bet the house, but i'm pretty sure that guy is objectively better.

If giles hadn't missed so much time, i think it would have been his, if he kept it up, of course... In hindsight (from the future): unless he consistently puts up similar full seasons, you can assume it would have dipped. you add 133% to his counting #'s and he's probably the MVP

In my eyes, it's a two-way race between Bremer and D'Zinnik. I'm a huge proponent of using WAR as the most comprehensive way to measure offensive and defensive ability, and Bremer and D'Zinnik are head and shoulders ahead.
