Walkers news: May 5 -- St. Louis 2, Des Moines 1, 10 innings

Record: 19-5, 1st, 5 GA Springfield
Tanner Kohlhepp's two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Bo Bichette with the game-winning run as St. Louis downed Des Moines 2-1 at Busch Stadium (1997).
Bichette had drawn a lead-off walk from Harvesters relief pitcher Jon Olsen.
Carlos Vidal got down a bunt only to have Olsen make an errant throw to second, putting runners at first and second.
Olsen retired the next two batters, but Kohlhepp put a ground ball between short and third to score Bichette.
Des Moines struck first in the bottom of the sixth inning on a home run from Cody Bellinger off River Walkers starting pitcher Steven Brault.
St. Louis tied it in the bottom of the inning.
Bichette led off with a single off Des Moines starter Nick Pivetta.
One-out singles from Andrew Benintendi and Rhys Hoskins loaded the bases and led to Pivetta's exit.
Kellan Tulip stepped in and the same guy who would drive in the game-winner, Kohlhepp, connected on a 3-2 single that tied it.
Brault allowed just one run despite allowing 10 hits in seven innings. He struck out four and walked none.
John Curtiss (0.2 IP) and Nick Lodolo (0.1) combined to keep Des Moines off the board in the eighth.
Luis Palomo and Dan Jennings did the same in the ninth.
Danny Grigg (1-0) handled the 10th and would end up earning his first win.

Walkers news: May 6 -- Des Moines 4, St. Louis 0

Record: 19-6, 1st, 5 GB Springfield
Sixto Sanchez handled the first 5.1 innings and the Des Moines bullpen handled the rest as the Harvesters downed St. Louis 4-0 at Busch Stadium (1997).
The loss ended a six-game win streak for the River Walkers.
Sanchez (1-4) allowed five hits in his time on the mound. He struck out six and walked two.
The Harvesters wasted little time taking control as Cody Bellinger hit a two-run homer off Walkers starting pitcher Jimmy Lambert in the top of the first.
Des Moines other two runs came in the sixth.
Jackson Miller and Alex Freeland earned the RBIs with singles off Lambert.
Jon Olsen finished off the sixth inning after Lambert exited.
Yelin Rodriguez, Ronny Carvajal and Jandel Gustave all pitched an inning to finish off the win.

Carlos Vidal led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a home run and Jean Carmona later added an RBI single as St. Louis downed Des Moines 5-3 at Busch Stadium (1997).
The victory The River Walkers victories in two of their three games in their series against the Harvesters.

Down 3-0, back-to-back home runs from Cody Bellinger (a two-run shot) and John Lehto off River Walkers starter Alex Faedo in the top of the eighth inning had tied it.
Vidal hit a 3-2 pitch from Harvesters reliever Leo Vazquez 384 feet over the wall in right field to break the tie.
Andrew Benintendi followed with double.
Rhys Hoskins then received an intentional walk.
Tanner Kohlhepp followed with a fly ball which moved Benintendi to third.
Carmona then singled on a 2-2 pitch, Benintendi scoring to make it 5-3.
Faedo was impressive not allowing a run through the first seven innings.
He finished the game having gone 7.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits.

Danny Grigg (2-0) completed that eighth inning and earned the win.
Edwin Diaz once again didn't allow a run in the ninth and collected his eighth save.
An RBI double from Jared Thomas off Des Moines starter Yeo-San Park in the second inning put St. Louis up 1-0.
Carmona cranked a two-run homer off Park in the fourth pushing it to 3-0.

Walkers news: May 9 -- Grand Rapids 4, St. Louis 3

Record: 20-7, 1st, 4.5 GA Springfield
Omar Lombard drew a bases-loaded walk from St. Louis relief pitcher John Curtiss with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Grand Rapids a 4-3 win at the Polo Grounds (1923).
The River Walkers had tied it in the top of the ninth on a one-out solo homer by pinch-hitter Johan Camargo off Traders reliever Kevin Milam.
But St. Louis failed to retire a batter in the bottom of the inning.
Quinn Bodery led off with a single off reliever Dan Jennings and Kevin Pillar followed with a walk,
A Levi Usher infield single then jammed the bags and brought Curtiss into the game.
An inside-the-park homer from Kris Bryant to lead off the bottom of the second had put Grand Rapids up 1-0.
A Jared Thomas RBI single off Traders starter Lance McCullers Jr. tied it in the fourth.
Tanner Kohlhepp drove in a run with a double off reliever Zachary Stella, giving the Walkers a 2-1 advantage in the top of the eighth.
Christian Yellich cranked a two-out, two-run homer off Jake Brentz in the bottom of the eighth, as the Traders went up 3-2.
McCullers worked six innings, allowing just one run on eight hits. He struck out four and walked one.
Steven Jennings, Stella. and Milam (2-0) all pitched an inning apiece.
Milam's work in the ninth earned him his second win of the season.

Carlos Andres Cortes snapped a 3-3 tie with a three-run homer off St. Louis starting pitcher Adonis Medina, and Grand Rapids cruised to a 10-5 win at the Polo Grounds (1923).
A single by pitcher Jimmy Nelson got things moving in the fourth for the Traders.
Pavin Smith drew a two-out walk to get Cortes to the plate.
He drove a 2-2 pitch from Medina over the right-field wall, 368 feet from home plate, to put Grand Rapids up 6-3.
The Traders other four runs all came in the sixth.
Kris Bryant did the bulk of the damage with a three-run homer off reliever Tim Hill.
Cortes, however, had drove in the inning's first run with a single.
Nelson took care of the first 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits.
Robbie Ray (2-0) finished the fifth and worked a scoreless sixth.
Alex Wood (2.1 IP) and Durbin Feltman (0.2) combined to finish the contest.

Aaron Ackerman broke up a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning while JoJo Romero worked six scoreless innings and combined with two relievers on a shutout as Grand Rapids downed St. Louis 2-0 at the Polo Grounds (1923).
The victory gave the Traders a sweep of their three-game series against the River Walkers.
St. Louis starter Stephen Brault was still on the mound to begin the bottom of the eighth with it still 0-0.
He allowed a one-out single to Quinn Brodey.
Ackerman then cranked a 1-0 pitch 483 feet over the fence in left-center field for the only runs of the game.
The homer was the second of the season for Ackerman.
Romero scattered five hits over his six scoreless innings. He struck out seven and walked none.
Steven Jennings (1-0) kept the Walkers off the board in the seventh and eighth and would earn his first win of the season.
Kevin Milam was flawless in the ninth to collect his sixth save.

Tied 2-2, Evansville scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning and continued to add on from there as the Big Bossemen routed St. Louis 14-4 at Yankee Stadium (1952).
An error by River Walkers first baseman Rhys Hoskins helped set the stage for the outburst, putting runners at first and second rather than being an inning ending double plate.
Seth Beer followed with a single off St. Louis starting pitcher Jimmy Lambert to load the bases.
Will Benson quickly unloaded them with a double to make it 5-2.
Back-to-back home runs from Beer and Benson off Lambert in the fifth make it 7-2.
Rudy Rott hit a two-run homer off reliever Tim Hill as part of a three-run sixth inning.

Beer, who would go 5-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs, drove in the other run with a single.
The Bossemen hit the Walkers with a four-spot in the eighth.
Jasardo Chisholm plated two runs with a double. Benson had an RBI double.
Victor Robles made it 14-3 with an RBI single.
Evansville starter Carlos Rodon (3-1) worked five innings, allowing three runs on four hits.
J.B. Wendelken and Mike Vasil pitched two innings apiece to wrap things up.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the River Walkers.
Faedo (3-1) allowed just one run on three hits in his seven innings.
Dan Jennings (0.1 IP) and Danny Grigg (0.2) combined on a scoreless eighth.
Jake Brentz was perfect in the ninth for his sixth save.
St. Louis got its runs by scoring once each in the first two innings.
In the first, Edmond Americaan drew a one-out walk from Evansville starter Braxton Ashcraft.
He moved to second on an Andrew Benintendi ground out and scored on a Rhys Hoskins single.
In the second, Jean Carmona singled off Ashcraft with one out. He stole second before Alan Dondero was hit by a pitch.
Faedo then hit a ground ball to third base, where the Big Bossemen's Nolan Arendado booted the ball allowing Carmona to score.
Evansville got its lone run in the second on a Will Benson's solo homer off Faedo.

Rhys Hoskins doubled with two outs in the top of the 11th inning to score Andrew Benintendi and give St. Louis a 3-2 win over Evansville at Yankee Stadium (1952).
The victory gave the River Walkers wins in two of their three games against the Big Bossemen.
Bossemen reliever J.B. Wendelken retired the first two St. Louis hitters in the top of the 11th.
But he was replaced by Jairo Labourt.
He walked Benintendi.
Hoskins followed with a double over the center fielder's head, which was enough to bring Benintendi around the bases.
St. Louis had trailed 2-1 going into the top of the sixth.
Jared Thomas reached on a one-out single off reliever Jose Quintana.
Thomas was eliminated when Johan Camargo hit into a fielder's chice.
Edmond Americaan followed with a single.
Pinch-hitter Tanner Kohlhepp then lofted a fly ball into the outfield which center fielder Victor Robles misplayed.
Camargo scored on the play.
Walkers starting pitcher Argenis Batista worked five innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
St. Louis followed with six relievers -- Nick Lodolo (0.2 IP), John Curtiss (1.1), Dan Jennings (1.0), Danny Grigg (1.1), Jake Brentz (0.2) and Edwin Diaz (1.0) -- with Brentz (3-0) getting the win and Diaz collecting his ninth save.

Walkers news: May 16 -- Cedar Rapids 4, St. Louis 1

Record: 22-11, 1st, 0.5 GA Springfield
Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Sean Harp limited St. Louis to one run over the first five innings and his bullpen did the rest as the Golden Grapplers claimed a 4-1 win at Shibe Park (1949).
The hard-throwing Harp (2-2) scattered seven hits in his time on the mound while striking out four and walking two.
The River Walkers lone run came in the top of the third when pitcher Adonis Medina led off with a double.
A passed ball moved him to third, and Medina scored on a Bo Bichette single.
The Grapplers seized the lead for good in the third against Medina.
Terrin Vavra drew a lead-off walk and scored on a Joc Pederson double.
An RBI double from Mark Vientos, scoring Pederson who had drew a two-out walk, made it 3-1 Cedar Rapids.
The game's final run came in the seventh, when Enrique Bradford singled with one out off reliever Nick Lodolo.
Bradford stole second and scored on a Matt McLain double.
McLain had led off the bottom of the first with a homer off Medina.
Six relievers divided up the final four innings for Cedar Rapids.

Zach Schellenger and Mychel Givens worked an inning apiece to get the game to the eighth.
Felipe Vazquez (0.1 IP) and Kyle Barraclough (0.2) split up the eighth.
Jose Leclerc was perfect in the ninth for his 10th save.

Record: 23-11, 1st, 0.5 GA Springfield
Steven Brault turned in another strong start allowing one run over six innings to lead St. Louis to a 3-2 win over Cedar Rapids at Shibe Park (1949).
The lone run allowed by Brault came on a fourth-inning double by Terrin Vavra. It scored Dominic Smith who had led off the bottom of the inning with a double and made it 2-1.
In all, Brault worked six innings, allowing one run onj five hits. He struck out nine and walked three.

The River Walkers got their first two runs in the top of the second on homers from Rhys Hoskins and Tanner Kohlhepp off Golden Grapplers starter Ranger Suarez.
St. Louis made it 3-1 in the top of the seventh.
Kohlhepp coaxed a one-out walk from reliever Mychal Givens.
He stole second and moved to third on a ground out.
Alek Thomas scored Kohlhepp with a singe.
The Walkers would need that run as Cedar Rapids made it 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh on Matt McLain's two-out homer off reliever Dan Jennings.
But the St. Louis bullpen would lock it down.
John Curtiss set the Golden Grapplers down in order in the eighth.
Jake Brentz pitched around a lead-off single in the ninth from Noah Naylor for his seventh save.

Walkers news: May 18 -- Cedar Rapids 8, St. Louis 5

Record: 23-12, 2nd, 0.5 GB Springfield
Cedar Rapids pounded St. Louis starting pitcher Jimmy Lambert for five runs in the bottom of the second inning and rolled to an 8-5 win over St. Louis at Shibe Park (1949).
The victory gave the Golden Grapplers wins in two of three games in the series. It also knocked the River Walkers out of first place, as they fell a half-game behind Springfield.
Life has been tough for Lambert this season and it continued as he failed to get out of the third inning.
The second was the tough one.
Beginning with a lead-off double by Joc Pederson, five straight batters reached to start the inning for Cedar Rapids.
Noah Naylor drove in the first run with a single.
J Teijiero followed with another double, scoring a run.
After a walk to Terrin Vavra, Jean Carlos Arias plated two with the third double of the inning.
The fifth run of the inning scored on a Matt McLain sacrifice fly.
The carnage continued with two more runs in the third.
Pederson got it rolling with a one-out double.
A hit-by-pitch and walk then loaded the bases.
Vavra chased two of them home with a single, and sent Lambert to the shower.
St. Louis would try to climb back into it, getting as close as 8-5 in the top of the seventh.
But the Cedar Rapids bullpen retired the final six River Walkers batters of the game to seal the win.
Grapplers starter Rick Atkinson (5-2) worked the first five innings, allowing two runs on four hits.
Cedar Rapids had to use five relievers -- Jared Carkuff (1.0 IP), Felipe Vazquez (0.2), Kyle Barraclough (0.1), Jose Alvarado (1.0) and Jose Leclerc (1.0) -- to close out the game.
Leclerc's 1-2-3 ninth gave him 11 saves on the season.

Alex Faedo allowed one run over seven inning to help lead St. Louis to a 4-1 win over Kansas City at Busch Stadium (1997).
The victory put the River Walkers back in first place, a half-game in front of Springfield.

Faedo (4-1) allowed one run on three hits. He struck out nine and walked four.
Josh Shuler's solo homer in the top of the first off Faedo staked the Pit Masters to a 1-0 lead.
The River Walkers tied it in the bottom of the fifth against Kansas City starter Pablo Lopez.
Edmond Americaan reached on a one-out double and he moved to third when Faedo singled.
Bo Bichette tied it with a sacrifice fly.
St. Louis grabbed the lead in the seventh.
Americaan again scored the run. He led off with a triple off reliever Austin Hansen and scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Christian Arroyo.
The Walkers added an insurance run an inning later.
Back-to-back walks from reliever David Berg followed by a Jean Carmona single loaded the bases.
Americaan again came though with an RBI single off Trevor Hildenberger to make it 4-1.
After Faedo exited after the seventh inning, Nick Lodolo worked a perfect eighth.
Edwin Diaz did the same in the ninth for his 10th save.

The Pit Masters had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth when Danny Cushing led off with a home run off River Walkers relief pitcher Danny Grigg.
But Pit Masters reliever Austin Hansen brought nothing with him to the mound for the bottom of the ninth.
Pinch-hitter Rhys Hoskins started things with a lead-off walk.
After a strike out of Christian Arroyo, Johan Camargo doubled to put runners at second and third.
Bo Bichette was given an intentional walk.
Vidal followed with a single, scoring Hoskins to tie it.
With Erik Miller on the mound, Benintendi knocked another single as Camargo crossed the plate with the winning run.
River Walkers starting pitcher Argenis Batista was impressive going 7.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out 13 and walked one.
Grigg went the rest of the way.

He (3-0) allowed the homer to Cushing but still earned his third win.

Tim Anderson hit a three-run home run off St. Louis reliever John Curtiss in the top of the seventh inning to help give Kansas City a 5-2 win at Busch Stadium (1997).
The victory allowed the Pit Masters to salvage the finale of the three-game series after dropping the first two.
Jayson Gonzalez opened the top of the seventh with a single off River Walkers starter Adonis Medina.
Yasmani Grandal followed with a double, putting base runners at second and third.
That was when Curtiss got the call.
Two pitches later, with a 1-1 count, the Masters were in command as Anderson drove the ball 419 feet over the wall in left-center field.
Tied 1-1, both teams had scored in the sixth inning.
Josh Shuler had doubled off Medina and scored on a Yordan Alvarez single.
In the bottom of the inning, Carlos Vidal hit a home run off Masters starter Trevor Oaks.
Oaks (2-3) would go seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out one but walked just one.
Austin Hansen struck out two of the three batters he faced in the eighth.
Kyle Nelson handled the ninth and came out of it with his fourth save.

Alan Dondero could not have picked a better time to collect his first hit of the season, his lead-off double in the bottom of the 11th inning leading to the winning run in St. Louis 3-2 win over Quad City at Busch Stadium (1997).
Coming into the contest 0-for-12 on the season, Dondero failed to reach in his first three at bats against the Thunder before leading off the bottom of the 11th with his double off relief pitcher Jake Diekman.
Edmond Americaan moved Dondero to third with a sacrifice bunt.
Bo Bichette's fly ball to the outfield was enough to bring him home.
The Thunder tallied the game's first two runs.
Carter Kieboom scored both runs for Quad City.
He led off the fifth with a homer off River Walkers starter Steven Brault.
Two inning later, reliever Dan Jennings walked Kieboom, who again was leading off.
A ground ball moved him to second.
Kieboom scored on a two-out single by pitcher Daniel Ritcheson.
Shutout on three hit by Ritcheson to that point, the Walkers finally came alive in the bottom of that inning.
Ritcheson was on the mound at the start issuing a lead-off walk to Carlos Vidal and unleashing a wild pitch which moved him to second before getting Tanner Kohlhepp to fly out.
Vidal advanced to third on the fly ball.
Brenan Hanifee replaced Ritcheson and his third pitch got passed catcher Miguel Gomez, scoring Vidal.
Hanifee got Jean Carmona to ground out.

Brault worked the first six innings, allowing one run on four hits.
Jennings, Luis Polomo and Nick Lodolo all recorded to outs apiece to get the game through the eighth.
Jake Brentz took care of the ninth and 10th without allowing a run.
John Curtiss (2-0) pitched around a walk in the 11th, setting himself up for the victory.

Walkers news: May 24 -- Quad City 10, St. Louis 2

Quad City pounded St. Louis starting pitcher Jimmy Lambert for seven runs in the top of the fourth inning, turning a 2-0 lead to 8-0, and the Thunder rolled to a 10-2 win at Busch Stadium (1997).
St. Louis lone runs came on back-to-back homers with two outs in the bottom of the ninth from Jean Carmona and Alex Thomas, both allowed by reliever Drew Mendoza.
Carter Kieboom had an RBI double off Lambert in the second inning.
Duke Kinamon singled with one out in the third and later scored on a Randolph Thorne ground out.
Although he retired the first two hitters, the ceiling collapsed on Lambert in the fourth.

Six consecutive Q-C batters reached base, beginning with a two-out walk to Andrew Bethea.
Shane Shifflett and Kinamon had RBI singles.
Nick Gonzalez drove in two with a double.
Randolph Thorne capped the carnage with a two-run home run.
Thunder starting pitcher Izzy San Juan (2-3) kept the River Walkers off the board for the opening six innings, allowing five hits. He struck out five and walked one.
Mendoza worked the final three innings and earned his first save.
River Walkers' first baseman Rhys Hoskins had to leave the game in the fourth inning after suffering a hyperextended ankle while running the bases.

Walkers news: May 25 -- Two rosters moves -- Hoskins to DL, Lambert sent down

The St. Louis River Walkers have announced a pair of roster moves.
First baseman Rhys Hoskins has been placed on the 10-day disabled list after he suffered a hyperextended ankle in a 10-2 loss to Quad City on May 24.
Called up from AAA Memphis will be 1B/3B Romy Gonzalez.
The 32-year-old Hoskins has batted .218 with eight homers and 20 RBIs in 38 games for the River Walkers in 2019.
Gonzalez, 28, has batted .318 with five homers and 21 RBIs in 40 games for AAA Memphis.
Also, right-handed starting pitcher Jimmy Lambert has been sent to AAA Memphis following the 10-2 loss to Quad City.
Lambert, 30, has gone 2-5 with a 7.71 ERA in eight starts for St. Louis this season.
Coming up from AAA will be Derek Gordon.
The 33-year-old Gordon is 2-1 at Memphis this season with a 2.35 ERA. He has worked in six games and made three starts this season.
