Thrilling Win Pushes Mets to Next Round

MLB Box Scores, New York Mets at Los Angeles Dodgers, 10/04/2016

In what was described by the team's manager as a "thrilling night" for fans of the New York Mets, the club has advanced to the Division Series, with a 7-6 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

David Wright (NYM) dialed long distance twice. He connected on a three-run shot in the first inning off Orel Hershiser. "Captain America" repeated the feat with a 2-run wallop in the sixth inning off knuckleballer Charlie Hough.

On the other side of the ballpark, Los Angeles players forlornly packed up their belongings and said goodbye to teammates for the offseason.

The New York Mets will play against the San Francisco Giants in the next round. San Francisco had a bye in the Wildcard Series. The Division Series schedule will be announced after the Wildcard Series finishes.

Seaver Handcuffs Giants, Mets Seize 1-0 Advantage in Division Series

MLB Box Scores, New York Mets at San Francisco Giants, 10/06/2016

The Division Series got off to a quiet start today, with the traveling New York Mets taking a low-scoring 2-0 win over the host San Francisco Giants. New York right-hander Tom Seaver was marvelous at AT&T Park and was named player of the game. The Mets now hold a 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 series.

Seaver earned the win, going 7.2 strong innings for New York. The native of Fresno, California allowed just 3 hits, while striking out 11. San Francisco hitters did next to nothing against the right-hander.

Gregg Jefferies delivered the game's first run with a single in the third frame off Juan Marichal, scoring Jose B. Reyes. Cleon Jones drilled a two-base hit in the top of the ninth inning off Joe Nathan, plating Kevin Mitchell with an insurance run.

Game 2 is set to be played on Friday, October 7th, 2016 at AT&T Park. Slated to start are Nolan Ryan for New York and Tim Lincecum for San Francisco.

Ford Handcuffs Twins, Yankees Seize 1-0 Advantage in Division Series

MLB Box Scores, New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins, 10/07/2016

Leave it to the veteran. The New York Yankees got a great start from 35-year-old left-hander Whitey Ford, who earned player of the game honors today as New York won the contest 5-4 at Target Field. Ford threw 7 innings of 5-hit ball in the win, which allowed the New York to grab a 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 series.

The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Tom Tresh came to bat in the top of the 11th. Facing Minnesota pitcher Dave Goltz, he hit a 0-2 slider for a run-scoring double. It was a game-changer, putting New York on top, 5-4.

The next game is scheduled for Saturday, October 8th, 2016 at Target Field. The scheduled starters for the game are Fritz Peterson for the Yankees and Frank Viola for the Twins.

Giants Even With Mets After Home Win

MLB Box Scores, New York Mets at San Francisco Giants, 10/07/2016

The San Francisco Giants defeated the New York Mets, 5-1 in Game 2 of the Division Series today. Earning player of the game honors was starter Tim Lincecum, who threw 8 innings of 6-hit ball. The Mets had little chance against Lincecum, who overpowered New York hitters and struck out 10.

George Foster's double to center field off Randy Myers scored Buster Posey with the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. Myers failed to retire any of the 5 batters that he faced and allowed 4 runs. Nolan Ryan whiffed 13 Giants in 7 innings but left with a no-decision. The win moves San Francisco into a 1-1 tie with New York in the series.

Baltimore Takes Series Lead in Low-Scoring Affair

MLB Box Scores, Baltimore Orioles at Los Angeles Angels, 10/08/2016

The Baltimore Orioles moved to within one game of the League Championship Series today, downing the Los Angeles Angels on the road at Angel Stadium of Anaheim by a score of 3-1. The win gives the Orioles a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-5 Division Series.

A crucial at-bat came with runners on 1st and 2nd and one out in the top of the sixth inning. That's when catcher Matt Wieters, who is a three-time All-Star, hit a run-scoring single. The Orioles went on to win.

San Francisco Secures Extra-Inning Victory

MLB Box Scores, San Francisco Giants at New York Mets, 10/09/2016

Mike Scott struck out 16 Giants over 8 innings, but the New York Mets lost anyway, falling 3-2 in extra innings to the San Francisco Giants at Citi Field. With the win, San Francisco took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-5 Division Series.

Runs were hard to come by in this one. Buster Posey's at-bat with two out in the top of the tenth, therefore, was critical. The San Francisco catcher hit a run-scoring double, to put his team on top, 3-2. Joe Nathan earned the victory with 2 scoreless innings in relief of Bill Hands (7 IP, 10 K).

Game 4 is scheduled for Monday, October 10th, 2016 at Citi Field. The scheduled starters for the game are Bob Knepper for San Francisco and Dwight Gooden for New York.

Cardinals Dominate, Sweep Division Series

MLB Box Scores, Atlanta Braves at St. Louis Cardinals, 10/09/2016

John Denny isn't taking anything for granted, but he likes his team's chances to capture a World Series.

"We're playing great baseball right now," said the St. Louis Cardinals hurler, who was named MVP of the Division Series after his club swept the Atlanta Braves.

It's off to the League Championship Series for St. Louis, after winning the clinching game by a 2-0 count and the series 3-0.

It remains to be seen whether Denny's confidence is warranted, but at this point the team is looking good. The MVP had a 0.00 ERA over 8.1 innings pitched, with a 1-0 record.

Second baseman Matt Carpenter scored both runs for the Redbirds.

The St. Louis Cardinals don't know who they will face in the next round. They will play the winner of the New York Mets - San Francisco Giants series. San Francisco leads the series 2 game to 1. The League Championship Series schedule will be announced after the Division Series finishes.

Peterson Perplexes Twins, Yankees Seize 2-1 Advantage in Division Series

MLB Box Scores, Minnesota Twins at New York Yankees, 10/10/2016

The New York Yankees moved to within one game of the League Championship Series today, downing the visiting Minnesota Twins at Yankee Stadium by a score of 4-3. Yankees left-hander Fritz Peterson was named player of the game after a strong outing in which he threw 7 innings allowing 3 runs. The win gives the Yankees a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-5 Division Series.

Had Elston Howard not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 1st, Howard hit a run-scoring double. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Yankees.

"I just trusted my stuff," said Peterson.

Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday, October 11th, 2016 at Yankee Stadium. The scheduled starters for the game are Denny Neagle for the Twins and Ron Guidry for the Yankees.

Giants Advance to League Championship Series

MLB Box Scores, San Francisco Giants at New York Mets, 10/10/2016

Game 4 of Hardball Retrospective Expansion Era NL Division Series

The Division Series may not have lived up to the expectation that it would be a dogfight that would go the distance. The San Francisco Giants, however, are not complaining.

The Giants were plenty happy to have wrapped up the series early and to have knocked out the New York Mets to advance to the League Championship Series.

San Francisco won the final game by a 3-2 count at Citi Field and the series 3-1.

Giants catcher Buster Posey was named series MVP, as he hit .353 with a .353 on-base percentage.

"It's not going to be the last time New York makes it to the playoffs, so it's sure a nice feeling to put them out this year," Posey said. "We just need to keep this going and take it day by day."

Bob Knepper (8 IP, 4 H, 9 K) out-dueled Dwight Gooden (8 IP, 3 ER, 14 K). Bobby Bonds jumped on two offerings from "Doctor K", swatting big-flies in the first and fifth innings to drive in 3 runs for the victors.

The San Francisco Giants will play against the St. Louis Cardinals in the next round. St. Louis won their series against the Atlanta Braves 3 games to 0. The League Championship Series schedule will be announced after the Division Series finishes.

Division Series Goes the Distance, Minnesota Prevails

MLB Box Scores, New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins, 10/13/2016

Game 5 of Hardball Retrospective Expansion Era AL Division Series

The Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees held nothing back in an entertaining Division Series that went the distance.

In the end, it will be Minnesota advancing to the League Championship Series, after a 3-0 triumph in the final game at Target Field, to wrap up the series 3-2.

Reggie Smith was named series MVP for Minnesota. For the series, Smith hit .300 with a .364 on-base percentage. He had 3 home runs, drove in 6 RBI and scored 3 runs.

Bert Blyleven hurled 8.2 shutout innings, striking out 12 Bronx Bombers while holding them to four base hits. Jesse Orosco celebrated by tossing his glove high in the air after striking out Tom Tresh for the final out of the game.

The Minnesota Twins will play against the Baltimore Orioles in the next round. Baltimore won their series against the Los Angeles Angels 3 games to 0. The League Championship Series schedule will be announced after the Division Series finishes.
