Rivals

Been playing the game and thinking to myself -- What if OOTP had some sort of rivalry system? Where for each team you would have number between 1-10 to determine how big a rival another team in the league is to your team in that season, with 10 biggest the most fierce. Anyone else thought of something like that?

It's been brought up before and I like it, but what are you going to do with it besides assigning rivals a number? Will they be less likely to trade with each other, will attendance go up a nominal amount, you don't want some clutch/non-clutch thing do you? You could definitely incorporate it into storylines.

I like it. I think the game already knows which cities are closer to one another, and maybe there could be a manual override, so that the user could set rivalries. I think it would impact attendance, and maybe trading (unless that opens up a can of worms in the trading AI). I am not convinced about any kind of performance boost, however. That way lies madness, IMHO.

The attendance thing at the very least, especially when the rival teams have a fairly close geographic proximity. Think of how many teams have fan bases that are known to "travel well" and fill up opponents' parks...

Rivals would increase attendance, fights, and prevent eachother from trading for the most part.

And losing a series to a rival could annoy owner very much.
And vice versa.

Imagine one of the owner's goals: "Have winning percentage against the rival". Or maybe even have owners that value winning against rivals no less than winning playoffs etc.

I like the similar "derby" system in Football Manager.

Also yeah the being less likely to trade thing would make a lot of sense. I have as the Yankees had Boston offer me trades a lot.

This would be a really good add.

Especially for bitter rivals like Yankees-Red Sox - could up the ante on whether or not there's a bench-clearing brawl.

I've asked for this also. I would envision the team setting page having fields for up to 3 "rival" teams - ranked 1 to 3. As mentioned, possible affects would be: games against these rivals would increase attendance a small percentage/affect fan interest, higher chance of brawl/ejections, make it harder to trade between teams, generate stories in league newspaper, possibly be owner goals (winning record vs rivals).

Related to this, it would be nice if the Team page also showed historical record vs other teams/franchises.
