PREMIER LEAGUE HOCKEY NEWS

- SUPER SUNDAY: EIGHT GAMES LEAGUE WIDE
- BATTLE OF QUEBEC FIRES UP

Game of the Day:
Montreal Champions 3 - 2 Quebec Nordiques
Colisee Pepsi, Quebec City (Att. 15,410)

The Battle of Quebec resumed tonight in a match-up at Quebec City that saw plenty of penalties, plenty of shots and plenty of hits but, above all, a close and thrilling game of hockey. The Nordiques opened the scoring in the first period when Justin von Duehren scored his third goal of the season on a pass from Nathan Howard at left dot. The most surprising thing was that it didn't happen on the powerplay: for just shy of a full two minutes, Montreal were down two men when Jamie Carrick (roughing) was followed into the box by Ben Brennan (cross-checking). Nick Terreri then got two minutes for boarding just seconds after the double penalty had finished. The Montreal PK was up for it, however, and the Nordiques finished at just 1-0 when they should have been much better off.

The second period was punctuated with a goal at the very end - 16 seconds were left when Anthony Holdom of the Champions got one in to level it up 1-1. Oakley Milani put it to 2-1 early in the third period, and the Champions clearly thought they had it put away until, at 18:37, Filip Sevcik got his fourth goal of the year to tie it up at 2-2. Overtime didn't last long, however: just six seconds in, Yego Mastinsky scored to put the Champs 3-2 up and sneak out the win.

Elsewhere in the league, the Cardinals, inspired by some brutal defence by Fred Seawright, held on to a 1-goal lead in the third to snatch victory over the Toronto Aces. Chicago upset the Islanders in Charlottetown 7-4 off the back of an Anthoni Labonte hat trick. Michigan took a win on the road against Vancouver, 3-1, and Calgary won in Allentown, beating the Lehigh Valley Phantoms 6-2 in an excellent all-round team effort - though not before the third period collapsed into an all-out brawl that saw ten penalties between the two teams and three powerplay goals to Calgary. Colorado finally registered a win by holding off a late-charging visiting Ottawa to win 5-3, the Sharks blanked the Vikings in 1-0 win at home, and David Scopelleti continues to amaze as he shut out the New York Centrals in the Park, giving the New England Whalers a stunning 3-0 win over the much-fancied Centrals.

PREMIER LEAGUE HOCKEY NEWS

- COUGARS CONTINUE GIANT KILLING RUN
- ARROWS HIT BY INJURY CONCERN
- CARDS BLOW AWAY MUSTANGS IN 1ST

First, to San Francisco where the Arrows today announced that Ryan Beaudin (D) will miss up to 21 days with a separated shoulder. It's the last thing the Arrows needed, running 0-5 and in the cellar of the league standings.

Game of the Day:
St. Paul Cardinals 5 - 3 Calgary Mustangs
Federation Arena, Calgary (Att: 19,150)

The Cardinals made it two in a row when they overcame the Mustangs in Calgary, finally showing the form that everyone always suspected they had. Captain Thorn Tramel racked up five points - two goals of his own and three assists.

The scoring started early for the Cardinals and the Mustangs looked to be on the back foot the whole time. Tramel and Matthew Heximer combined for the first of the game, Tramel setting up Heximer, who was waiting behind the net and managed the warparound before Alex Olsson could get himself set. Thorn Tramel then managed his own first goal for the night, a set passing play as the pair ran a two-on-one breakaway. Tramel then set Frederik Fallesen up for a slap from the hash marks during a powerplay in the sixteenth minute.

In the second period, Tramel scored his second goal - again assisted by Heximer and defender Fred Seawright - to give St. Paul a 4-0 lead. Calgary struck back, finally, through the efforts of Samuel Annable and Filip Petersson, to put the Mustangs within two at the final intermission.

A breathtaking shot early in the third from John Wheeler brought them even closer, a seemingly physics-defying wrister that went top shelf and left Michael Shepherd with simply no clue of what had just happened to him. Calgary seemed to have the momentum, but were unable to capitalise and had pulled Shepherd when Seawright and Tramel finally wrested it out of the Cards end and allowed Heximer to go on the attack, a powerplay empty-netter in the final minute to put it beyond doubt. Heximer rather spoiled his excellent night by, with five seconds to go, picking a fight with Juraj Gajdos. Exactly what was said between the two is now lost to time, but Heximer's right hook is captured on film for the ages.

Elsewhere in the league, the Montreal Champions scored the first three against the Nightmare only to let in six unanswered goals as the Nightmare went on to win 6-3. Mattias Rosell scored two - both the game winning fourth and the final sixth with just 3 seconds to go. The Giants and Whalers played out a 3-3 draw in Hartford, with the Whalers letting in two in the last period to sacrifice the lead. The hapless Arrows lost to the Islanders 6-3, with a pair of goals to Corbin Webb near the end being the highlight for the game. Lehigh Valley's Joe Logan stopped 35 shots to lead his team to a 4-1 win over the LA Sharks, who go 1-3-2 after six in one of the biggest surprises of the league. William Ekbom lead the valley with brilliant, physical play to keep the Sharks out of the contest.

The Centrals visited the Vikings and lost in regulation after going 3-1 up at the end of the first. Nicky Jephcott continues to impress with another goal and two assists, but the efforts of Randolph Gray (2 goals) and Jonathon Gagnon (1 goal, 1 assist) were more telling on the outcome of the match as Manitoba put on three unanswered goals in the second and third periods.

Finally, the Cougars blanked the Nordiques at the Theatre tonight, with Henrik Jensen's 31 saves giving him the first shutout of his pro career. The win - off the back of goals to Milan Matz and Mathew Shaw - puts Chicago at 3-2-1, miles ahead of their anticipated 0-0-6. The one high point for Quebec was the play of centre Tyson Scissons, who skated tirelessly and played aggressive hockey, never giving up even as time ticked away.

PREMIER LEAGUE HOCKEY NEWS

- QUEBEC AND SEATTLE REGISTER SHUTOUTS
- ACES SNAP CARDS STREAK
- WHALERS TOO GOOD AT HOME

Game of the Day:
Los Angeles Sharks 1 - 2 New England Whalers
Hartford Civic Centre, Hartford (Att: 14,510)

Not one of the rivalries we were expecting to crop up when the Mountain and Atlantic leagues merged, this may be the first genuine rivalry to develop that is purely based in the Premier League of Hockey - and it's all down to one man. Dave Scopelleti, judged as superfluous to requirements at LA, was sent to New England, where he is setting himself up as one of the goalies to watch this season. He's already held his former club to a shutout once this season (one of two in just 5 games) and tonight in Hartford he managed 28 saves to bring his new club the points again.

Brian Helms opened the scoring for New England when he scored on the powerplay, a pass from behind the net from Benjamin Suffa giving him the chance. But indiscipline seemed contagious at the Civic last night and Rajbir Johar got it back while Hartford were down two players (Gilbert and Luschik), scoring in a 2-on-1 rush.

The second period saw no scoring but did see a fierce fight between Terry Lowe and Ryan Delacourt that saw the players separated from each other and from half their match payment in accordance with the new, anti-fighting policy of the PLH.

The third and final period was all New England as they piled on 15 shots to LA's mere five - and that with two powerplays to the Sharks. Inevitably, the Whalers got one on net when Joseph Gilbert scored off Tom Mueller's set up from the blueline. Despite Matt Kavanagh's best efforts (42 stops) the defence for the Sharks was lacking and he couldn't do it all on his own. 28 saves was enough for Scopelleti to get the win in his column.

Elsewhere in the league, Quebec shut the Nationals out at home, winning 4-0 with two goals to Paul Schmidt in the last period rubbing salt into the wound, and Michael Pratt registering his first shutout of the season. The Nightmare also kept the Mustangs scoreless, with the rampaging Seattle team racking up four goals of its own, three of them in the last period as the much-vaunted Calgary backline seemingly imploded. Finally, the Cards improvement stumbled when they went down to the Aces at the Entertainment Centre 2-3, the game swinging against them on a Fred Seawright penalty for interference in the second. Ben Magnus scored for the Aces and then the Cardinals simply fell away to lose it in the third on a goal from Klaus Thorsen.

PREMIER LEAGUE HOCKEY NEWS

- MYERS OUT FOR A MONTH, ACES INJURY TROUBLES
- SIX GAMES - SCORES AND NEWS

First to Toronto where the Aces confirmed a month is the likely recovery time for left winger Chris Myers. Myers has scored 3 points in 6 starts so far this season.

Game of the Day:
Lehigh Valley Phantoms 5 - 3 Michigan Stags
Van Andel Arena, Grand Rapids

The Stags and the Phantoms met in Michigan tonight and the Phantoms became the first team to hold the Stags to an outright loss this season. Etienne Houle led the Phantoms with a goal and an assist, both in the first period. After the Phantoms got up 2-0, it was always a game of catch up for the Stags.

In the second period an unassisted goal to Larry Walton (his fourth this season) put the Stags within one, but Brayden Fraser got it back within five minutes. John Hamilton narrowed the gap again to 3-2 in a carefully set up play that saw him score directly in front, but Jakub Palka then had the lead at 2 again before the end of the period. The teams exchanged goals in the third period once more, but the Stags never levelled the score, and the Phantoms ran out comfortable winners thanks to an empty-netter to Tobias Fagerstrom.

Elsewhere in the league, the Aces brought the Nightmare's dream run to an end with a 4-2 win at home. St. Paul got back on their winning ways with a 2-1 win over the Giants, while San Francisco's home fans were disappointed with another setback, this one a 6-2 loss to Montreal. Charlottetown were schooled by a resurgent Eagles outfit, a pair of goals to Sebastien Thompson being the highlight of a 7-3 win for Colorado. And finally, in Chicago, the Vikings were too good for the inconsistent Cougars, who went down 4-2.

PREMIER LEAGUE HOCKEY NEWS

- ARROWS STUN STAGS IN GRAND RAPIDS
- OTTAWA TAKE DOWN CENTRALS IN THE PARK

Game of the Day
Ottawa Nationals 3 - 1 New York Centrals
Central Park Rink, New York (Att: 14,500)

The Centrals were never ahead as Brandon Moore completed 32 saves to give the Nationals a 2-goal win away from home today. The Centrals were bitterly disappointed with the loss, as it leaves them at 2-3-2 and at the bottom of Mountain East. The Nats, however, climb back to second in the Atlantic East off the back of the win.

The goal scorers for the Nationals were Flynn Webb, Andreas Henriksen and Joel Zimmerman. Nicky Jephcott tallied the lone marker for the Centrals, taking him to 12 points for the season and keeping him atop the Hjerpe Trophy race.

In today's other game, the Michigan Stags were stunned by the San Francisco Arrows, who did not just record their first win of the season but blanked the intimidating Stags 3-0 at Van Andel Arena. The Michigan fans were left in quiet disbelief as the Arrows outshot, outmuscled and ultimately outscored the Stags. Sakari Malinen scored twice for the Arrows - once in the first and once in the third - while Jordan Beck stopped all twenty Michigan shots to record the first shutout of his career.

PREMIER LEAGUE HOCKEY NEWS

- WHALERS EXTEND DIVISION LEAD WITH WIN AT HOME
- ALL-CANADA SHOWDOWN ENDS IN DRAW
- EAGLES TOO GOOD FOR SHARKS AT ALTITUDE

Game of the Day
Seattle Nightmare 3 - 5 New England Whalers
Hartford Civic Center, Hartford (Att: 14,510)

With one game to go in their first home stand of the season, the Whalers are three wins for no losses and streaking ahead of the pack. Benjamin Suffa's pair of goals for the team tonight were the difference between the Whalers and a fired up Seattle, looking to bounce back from their loss to the Aces.

This clash, which no-one preseason would have imagined would be a top-of-the-table shootout, emphasised the Whalers strengths as a team who move the puck around: four goal scorers made it possible but the passing game of - particularly - Tyler Wheeler and Steve Richburg (2 assists each) was what gave them the edge.

For Seattle, Alexis Paquette continues to challenge for the goalscoring lead this season with another marker. Paquette's goal tied it all up 3-3 in the third period, but it was then that Wheeler and Richburg seemingly came alive and set up first Benjamin Suffa and then Nazib Subayev for the game winning goals.

Elsewhere in the league today, Quebec and Charlottetown played out a see-sawing thriller that saw the lead change repeatedly as Billy Hodges scored a hat-trick for Charlottetown and Jason Chatenay a brace for Quebec to take the teams to overtime. Neither could score and it was all over, 4-4.

Finally, at Whitefall, Colorado flattened a listless LA in a game that featured 14 powerplays (although only two powerplay goals, one for each team). Jordan D'Agostini was the star for the home team with a goal and three assists for veteran defenceman.

- COUGARS MAUL TORONTO 6-0
- SHARKS SINK TO BOTTOM OF MOUNTAIN LEAGUE WITH ANOTHER LOSS
- CHARLOTTETOWN BOUNCE BACK AT HOME AGAINST NATS

Game of the Day:
Montreal Champions 3 - 2 Lehigh Valley Phantoms
Silence Arena, Allentown (Att. 14,599)

Silence Arena lived up to its name in the third period when the Phantoms went from 1-0 up at the end of the second to 3-2 down at the end of play. Montreal's Kevin Bowman scored at 8:44 of the third to tie it up at 1-1 a piece after Emil Fahlstrom's marker had been the only goal for 46 minutes.

For 9 minutes, the arena was totally tense as the home fans were on the edge of their collective seats. At 17:39, Bowman repeated to put the Champions 2-1 up, only to see, just 12 seconds later, Chris Fox get it back for the hometown Phantoms on a fantastic breakway. He left the defence in the dust and deked out Russel Car to tie it up at 2-2. But at 18:28, completing a remarkable 49 seconds of play, Yegor Matinsky fired a slapshot past Joe Logan from the blue-line to give the Champions the lead and, ultimately, the win.

Elsewhere in the league, the Islanders bounced back from their recent run of outs to trounce the Nationals 5-1 at Elizabeth Arena. The Sharks fell to Quebec, 7-3 at Colisee Pepsi as their much vaunted goaltending tandem of Kurka and Kavanagh looked close to helpless, Kurka getting yanked just before the end of the second after letting in 6. Four points (a goal and three helpers) for Tyson Scissons made the Quebec centre's night.

The Cougars continue to be the surprise packet of the Atlantic West with a 6-0 thrashing of the Toronto Aces. Two goals to Hoyt Carson and three assists to defender Adam Markup led the Cougars home, while Henrik Jensen continues to come along leaps and bounds, stopping 18 shots for the shut out.

The Centrals home stand to forget continued as the Stags took them down 6-2 in the park. Dominik Petak led the Stags with 2 goals and an assist. Calgary prevented the Whalers from having a perfect home-stand, and New England had to settle for a 1-1 draw to finish their week in Hartford. Finally, the classic rivalry between the Manitoba Vikings and Vancouver Giants continued tonight, with the Vikings running out 3-1 winners. All four goals were scored in the first fourteen minutes of the third period, with Marcus Loow netting two within 31 seconds of each other to give Manitoba a two goal buffer that took them home.

PREMIER LEAGUE HOCKEY NEWS

- CENTRALS END THE COUGARS PARTY
- LEHIGH VALLEY BLANK THE NIGHTMARE
- CARDINALS UPSET VIKINGS

Game of the Day
St. Paul Cardinals 3 - 2 Manitoba Vikings
Manitoba Technical House, Winnipeg (Att. 16,500)

The Cardinals continued their efforts to claw their way out of the league's cellar by defeating the Vikings in Winnipeg tonight. The man responsible was veteran defender Fred Seawright. Seawright scored a goal, but more importantly skated 22:58 and was totally relentless in his harassment of the Vikings. He never seemed to relent and his teammates benefitted hugely from his example.

The only major action in the first was Jan Kinnunen's goal for the Vikings, giving them a 1-0 lead. The second period saw eight penalties but only one powerplay goal - Marcus Loow 5 minutes in. Just prior to that, Fred Seawright had tied it up in one of the few moments of even strength play all period, so Loow had stolen back the lead. Against the Cards earlier in the season, Manitoba might have counted their chickens, but this resurgent St. Paul line up was persistent, and Dan Fox scored at 6:54 in the third to tie it up. It took just two minutes of overtime for Jake Brantley to find the back of the net and win it for the Minnesotans.

Elsewhere in the league, Lehigh Valley visited Seattle and in a game of brutal defence, a nil-all tie looked likely until Rasmus Bjorklund found the back of the net for the Valley at 18:50 in the third, giving them a 1-0 win. The Arrows lost 4-2 to the Eagles in Denver, despite the determination of young Phillipe Laliberte, who set up both San Francisco goals. The Giants losing streak continues with a loss, 3-1, to the Stags on the road. And Burt Magee stopped 39 shots to register a shutout against the Chicago Cougars, whose run came to an end when the Centrals trounced them, 7-0. Nicky Jephcott kept apace for the Hjerpe Trophy race - currently led by the Islanders' Billy Hodges - with a goal and two assists in the drubbing.

- MUSTANGS RESUME WINNING WAYS AGAINST CHARLOTTETOWN

Game of the Day:
Ottawa Nationals 2 - 5 Montreal Champions
Mount Royal Arena, Montreal (Att. 16,100)

The Champions overcame the Nats at home last night to close in on leading the Mountain East. They sit two points behind the Stags but with two games in hand.

In a game that saw zero penalty minutes the crowd was treated to a solid night of skating and shooting from both teams. Trevor Spivak (Ottawa) and Oakley Milani (Montreal) both scored braces and Milani backed his up with a further two assists as his Champions downed the Nationals 5-2 as no other Ottawa players could match Spivak's example.

In the league's other game tonight, Calgary came back from 2-1 down to win 4-2 over the Islanders through the inspired leadership of Juraj Gajdos. Gajdos not only got a goal and an assist but also took the fight right up to the Charlottetown players, checking and attacking relentlessly to keep his team alive when they were trailing.

Game of the Day
Los Angeles Sharks 3 - 1 Toronto Aces
Toronto Entertainment Centre, Toronto

In the night's only game, LA were too good for the Aces in Toronto, winning 3-1. In another low-penalty affair - just three powerplays, all to LA and all of them killed by the Aces - the two teams took to the ice in a defensively-oriented clash.

Emmanuel Desrochers opened the scoring for the Aces just 18 seconds into the first period. Sadly, it was to be the only success the Toronto team had all night, as Matt Kavanagh held his nerve to stop the next 17 shots. In the second, Jesse Kanji and Eric Nielsen scored for LA and halfway through the third, Vincent Lachance put the result beyond doubt with a goal from a Stephen Forsey pass at the blue-line to leave LA with a 3-1 scoreline and a much needed win.

PREMIER LEAGUE HOCKEY NEWS

- Injuries hit Aces, Islanders
- Arrows upset Whalers
- Lehigh Valley beat Calgary

Injuries have struck both the Toronto Aces and Charlottetown Islanders tonight. Centre Ben Magnus of the Aces, who has five goals this season, is out with a chronic back pain that the team physios are growing concerned about. They expect he'll miss the next month. Back problems also plague Mattias Malmivaara (C) of the Islanders, who has ten points this season. He will be out for as long as three weeks after a collision with an opponent in tonight's game against the Nightmare left him with a strained muscle in his back.

Game of the Day
Chicago Cougars 1 - 2 Vancouver Giants
Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver

The Giants and Cougars are on level pegging in Atlantic West tonight after Vancouver registered a win at home to give both sides a 4-5-1 record. The low-scoring affair was all level at 1-1 after two periods, but just under five minutes into the third period, Michael Guillemette scored his second goal of the night to put Vancouver up 2-1, a position they held onto until the clock ran out. The Cougars will rue their own inconsistency - the difference was particularly evident in the goalkeeping ranks. Henrik Jensen is an incredible tender but still young and developing. Colby Froehlich looked more confident and assured in net for the Giants tonight and this was largely the difference between the two teams in the final period. The Cougars were constantly on the backfoot, defending and protecting their nervous goalie, while the Giants felt confident to go on the attack.

Elsewhere in the league, the Nightmare went 3-1 up over the Islanders who are beginning to ask questions sitting at 4-7-1. The Phantoms stopped the Mustangs in their tracks with a 4-1 win in Calgary, Emil Fahlstrom scoring twice and Joe Logan stopping 26 shots to put the Valley on top. And New England went down to the Arrows, who registered their second win of the season in front of an ecstatic home crowd, finally given something to cheer when Phillipe Laliberte scored the game winner halfway through the third period.

Today's Scores:
Ottawa Nationals 1 - 2 Michigan Stags
St. Paul Cardinals 1 - 4 Chicago Cougars

Game of the Day:
Quebec Nordiques 4 - 1 Lehigh Valley Phantoms
Silence Arena, Allentown

A packed Silence Arena was left largely disappointed as Quebec proved too good for the Phantoms tonight.

Quebec got on the board almost as soon as the puck had dropped: it took Nathaniel Alderson just twenty seconds to put the puck in the back of the net. The home team paid the price for poor discipline early in the game, giving up three penalties in the first period and, despite their best efforts, were unable to stop the Quebec powerplay, which scored on them through the stick of Filip Sevcik on a wraparound.

The third penalty - a slashing call on Sebastian Johansson - extended into the third period, and Martin Weaver put it in the back of the net just nine seconds after play resumed, giving the Nordiques a 3-0 buffer. Halfway through the third, Ken Negus got one back for the home team, but Jeff Fields returned fire for Quebec, and the final score of 4-1 was a reflection of the dominance Quebec showed out there tonight. The 35-23 shot count told the story: Quebec ran the Phantoms ragged and the men from the Valley simply couldn't keep up.

- Toronto, Colorado ink trade deal
- Centre Ice on Saturday Game of the Day

The Toronto Aces and Colorado Eagles put through a trade this morning, which saw the Greenshirts send Zane Takanaka (LD, 28) to Colorado in order to bolster their attack with right winger Walton Watkins (31). Aces GM Brett Lundberg offered the following statement:

"We think that this is exactly what we've been missing, that extra firepower and depth that the team needs."

Watkins had 7 points at Colorado in 4 games this season, as well as three assists with their minor league affiliate, the Mountain Lions. Takanaka is yet to play major league hockey.

Today's Scores:
Seattle Nightmare 3 - 5 Manitoba Vikings
Los Angeles Sharks 1 - 4 Montreal Champions

Centre Ice Game of the Week
Charlottetown Islanders 4 - 1 Toronto Aces
Toronto Entertainment Centre, Toronto

The ever-thrilling Founding Four rivalry had all the hallmarks of a tight, fiercely fought encounter - until the last period. The Greenshirts and the Islanders were evenly matched for the first two periods.

It didn't take long for the refs to get involved tonight: Bruce Richardson of the Islanders was in the box after just 36 seconds. Lovell DeSerres opened the scoring for Toronto on the powerplay with a one-timer off a pass from Guy Roy at the 1:09 mark. Dominic St. Croix got it right back, however, when Gordon Johnson ended up in the box for Toronto and the Islanders powerplay, anchored by Billy Hodges, got St. Croix to the net and fed him the goal.

After a first period that saw 9 penalties (5 Toronto, 4 Charlottetown), the second period was relatively tame, with only two penalties and no goals. The third period seemed to be going the same way, with both teams holding the draw until 16:08, at which time Corbin Webb scored on the wrap-around to give Charlottetown the lead. Brendan Eanes then put in two back-to-back for the Islanders to give them the buffer and leave Toronto with no time left to make the comeback.

Colorado Eagles 3 - 3 Vancouver Giants
Ottawa Nationals 2 - 3 Toronto Aces
Calgary Mustangs 5 - 6 San Francisco Arrows
Michigan Stags 2 - 6 Seattle Nightmare
Chicago Cougars 2 - 5 Quebec Nordiques

Game of the Day
Manitoba Vikings 2 - 3 New York Centrals
Central Park Rink, New York

In a thriller today at the Duck Pond, the Centrals just narrowly had the better of the Manitoba Vikings, giving the Centrals a much needed win as the season starts to knuckle down.

Nicky Jephcott opened the scoring in the first period with the Centrals' captain netting a goal from a Leo Zanier assist. It took just 37 seconds for the Vikings to equalize, however, as John Eyar netted one before almost immediately getting sin binned for roughing and killing any momentum the Vikings had gained.

The second period saw three penalties go against New York but it wasn't until Ryan Huddy of the Vikings was sent off in the 20th minute that either powerplay finally succeeded: just six seconds into the penalty, Samuel Brazeau scored off a Jephcott pass that keeps Nicky in touch with the Hjerpe Trophy.

The third saw Randolph Gray of the Vikings level things up, but just 1:51 into overtime Mike Ames of the Centrals scored, giving Leo Zanier his second assist of the night and giving the Centrals the win. The Centrals stay at home tomorrow for a game against Lehigh Valley while the Vikings have until Thursday before they play New England in Hartford.

St. Paul Cardinals 3 - 3 Colorado Eagles
Lehigh Valley Phantoms 0 - 4 New York Centrals

Game of the Day:
Vancouver Giants 7 - 3 Montreal Champions
Mount Royal Arena, Montreal

Back-to-back all-Canadian derbies provided RKO Canada with a ratings bonanza tonight, but one suspects that the 2-3 Nordiques/Mustangs game was a bit of an anti-climax after the Giants turned on arguably their best performance all season to upset the Champions in Montreal.

The first period was, to put it bluntly, a complete shootout. Berglund and Larocque scored for the Champions, but Nyrkov, Rielly, Paulseth and Blandford all scored to put the Giants up 4-2 at the end of the first. Neither team successfully killed their penalties (one a piece) in the first.

Three further penalties punctuated the second period, but all were successfully handled by the PK units. At 18:34, Clint McConnell finally scored to put Montreal back within one.

That was as close as they got, however, as they seemingly imploded with incredibly poor discipline, giving up an unthinkable four penalties and seeing powerplay goals scored on three of them, with Beckman, Blandford and Justin Moher posting the markers. Russ Card was pulled after giving up four in the first only to see Vojtech Baron let in another three and the Giants ran away with the game.

PREMIER LEAGUE HOCKEY NEWS

San Francisco Arrows to move?

Rumours began circulating today that San Fran Arrows owner Martin Kapla has begun looking for a potential buyer for his team - including ownership groups outside of the bay area. The Arrows and the league remain tight lipped but few appear to be surprised. The Arrows were founded in 1980, 16 years after the previous team in the Area, the Oakland Gold (themselves a relocation from Pittsburgh via Detroit) folded outright. A team in San Francisco appears to have been a passion for former league president Neil Simpson. Simpson's successor, Quinn MacMurray, is now president of the PLH. The Atlantic League just weeks ago announced Hugh Donald, former president of the now-defunct New York Players, will take his place as President of the Atlantic League.

The Arrows have one of the lowest draws in the league and are currently sitting dead last. In 5 seasons, they have never made the playoffs and finished no higher than second last in the Atlantic.

Game of the Day
Chicago Cougars 5 - 1 New England Whalers
Hartford Civic Center, Hartford

Chicago flattened the Whalers tonight as the Cougars continue to improve and surprise against all opponents. The Whalers seemed to have all the talent on ice tonight and were continually able to get the puck on net, outshooting the Cougars 33-24. But the Cougars Henrik Jensen goes from strength to strength, stopping 32 of those shots for a .97 save and first-star worthy performance.

The Cougars powerplay was notably hot tonight, going 2 from 5, while the Whalers were unable to capitalise on any of their five opportunities. Rick Krause scored for the Cougars with a goal and an assist, while Nazib Subayev managed a consolation goal to deny Jensen the shutout in the third.

Today's Scores:
San Francisco Arrows 3 - 2 New York Centrals
Colorado Eagles 4 - 3 Montreal Champions
Los Angeles Sharks 4 - 4 Lehigh Valley Phantoms
Calgary Mustangs 2 - 2 Quebec Nordiques

Game of the Day:
Michigan Stags 2 - 3 Ottawa Nationals
Nationals Arena, Ottawa

The Nats finally broke a run out outs with a win over the Stags at home tonights. While it was Andreas Henriksen who put the points on the board with a goal and an assist, arguably the star of the game was defender Ron McDowell, who was relentless in breaking up the Stags play and attacking their skill players. McDowell landed four big hits and skated a tireless 25 shifts for 23:23 on ice.

Henriksen's goal late in the first was the first of the night, and while Michigan struck back in the second through Dylan MaCulloch, his work to even the score was undone by Flynn Webb off a pass from Henriksen behind the net. The third went scoreless until the twentieth minute when Michigan pulled netminder James Bradley, resulting in Terry Brightman of the Nationals scoring on the empty net. Daniel Kral finally scored for the Stags just eight seconds later but the damage was done and they were unable to force overtime, going down 3-2.

PREMIER LEAGUE HOCKEY NEWS

- Injuries hit league-wide
Several teams were hit with injuries to key players over the last two days. Juraj Gajdos (C) of the Calgary Mustangs will miss up to three weeks with a strained abdominal muscle. The first-line center is the team's second highest point-scorer thus far this season. A knee sprain will sideline Adam Kakegabon (RW) of the Centrals for up to a month, the Centrals stating that they will miss the depth and reliability that Kakegabon provides.

The Manitoba Vikings are perhaps the hardest hit with news that Jonathon Gagnon (C) and Marcus Loow (RW) will be out of action for up to a month. Gagnon is suffering from plantar fascitis, and Loow has a strained quad. Gagnon and Loow are second and third in scoring for the Vikings this season, with Gagnon being the team's leading goal-scorer.

Today's Scores:
Toronto Aces 1 - 2 Chicago Cougars
New York Giants 5 - 4 Vancouver Giants
Manitoba Vikings 4 - 3 New England Whalers
Charlottetown Islanders 2 - 3 Lehigh Valley Phantoms

Game of the Day:
Seattle Nightmare 5 - 2 Calgary Mustangs
Federation Arena, Calgary

The Nightmare were dominant over their long-time rivals last night, beating the Mustangs 5-2 at Federation to stretch their lead atop the Mountain West. The Mustangs languish in the middle of the division.

Alexis Paquette opened the scoring with his 9th for the season just 2 minutes into the game, collecting a Preston Hughes pass right to the crease where Paquette was, unwisely, unmarked by the Mustangs despite being arguably the most dangerous player on the ice.

The second period was dominated completely by the Nightmare who went from 1-0 to 5-0 by the end of it. Jobke, Henderson, Mcnary and Wappel proved the depth on offer in the Nightmare line-up that has them atop the league. The Mustangs could only answer back physically and three Calgary players - Sam Annable, Larry Follmer and Emilio Desmond - found themselves in the penalty box by the end of the period.

In the third period, the Mustangs showed some of the guts and courage that have served them so well in the past. Giving up three penalties - Desmond again, as well as John Wheeler and Adam Back - the Mustangs nonetheless got two goals back from Keli Green and Roman Vrzacek, with the latter even being scored shorthanded. It was never going to be enough, however, and the Nightmare ran out the clock 5-2 winners over the mediocre Mustangs.

[ OUT OF UNIVERSE NOTE ]

Due to the incredibly slow nature of this run, I've decided to do two things:
1. I'm going to move to a "Weekly Report". This will allow me to get through the games faster. There'll be a transaction report, news, scores and a "game of the week" report. That way we can see some results before we all die of old age and I can write the game reports in a bit more detail. The last "daily report" will be Saturday October 19th 1985, after that, we'll move to weeks. Obviously, when the playoffs come along, I'll go back into more detail.

2. The standings, therefore, will be updated every four weeks (otherwise I'd just be updating them with every post and that would start to get silly). For those who hadn't noticed, updated standings are kept in the first post of this thread.

I hope that anyone who is reading this doesn't mind this move, it's really just so we can get on with it a little. I'm having a great time writing these reports and telling this hockey story, but I just feel like it's going so slowly. Also, this thread will reach, like, a million posts and we won't even have gotten more than a handful of cups out.

For those who are reading it, thank you. It makes me happy to know that people are reading and - I hope - enjoying this league.

Game of the Day:
San Francisco Arrows 2 - 0 St. Paul Cardinals
The Nest, St. Paul

A team under fire, rumours of sale and possible relocation growing louder and louder, the Arrows arrived at the Nest a team with a lot to prove - and boy, did they go a long way toward doing so. Led by the inspired goaltending of Jordan Beck who posted the second shutout of the season, the Arrows held the Cardinals scoreless to register their fifth win of the season and drag themselves off the league's basement, leaving the Cardinals and Sharks beneath them.

David Jech seemed to be skating like a man possessed for the Arrows last night as he was everywhere for the first ten minutes of the game, scoring in the eighth before getting called for hooking in the eleventh. St. Paul was seemingly nowhere, except for the ever-present and ever-determined veteran Fred Seawright, who skated 21 minutes, took two shots, landed a massive hit against Jeff McGeoch and engineered a takeaway in what can only be described as an "inspirational" effort. It wasn't, however, enough to stop David Jech setting up Dominik Dano for the second goal of the night, on the powerplay when Matthew Heximer was in the box halfway through the second.

Despite the Cards piling on the pressure in the third, Jordan Beck was up to the challenge, stopping 12 shots in the last twenty minutes - 33 total for the night - to ensure his team got away with the points. They go on to Seattle on Monday before heading home to face Michigan on Wednesday. The road gets little easier for the Cards: they host the Mountain East leading Nordiques on Sunday before heading out on the road for a trip that sees them battle the resurgent Cougars before an away-and-home series against the dominant Seattle Nightmare.
