Vegas Pink Knights - a 1990 Expansion Story

1990 is about the time that I got into baseball, so I figured I would re-write history at that time. League history is completely wiped and we are expanding in the NL West (expanded the Dolphins in the NL east for balance).

Edited playoffs so that the top 4 teams from each division make playoffs, and each round is a best-of-7 series.

The Challenge:
Stats-Only League
No trading for anyone under 30 years old
only trading with non-playoff teams
Play-out every game

Expansion Draft:
SP Sid Fernandez
SS Ozzie Guillen
SP Mark Gardner
SS Tony Phillips
CL Mike Hartley
CF Glenallen Hill
1B Andres Galarraga
RF Dante Bichette
SP Jamie Moyer
LF Felix Jose
2B Rich Amaral
SP Pat Hentgen
SP Willie Blair
SP Scott Radinsky
RP Norm Charlton
RP Michael Jackson
RP Stan Belinda
C Matt Nokes
C Jim Leyritz

First-Year Player Draft:
SP Andy Pettitte (2nd overall)
SP Aaron Sele (30th overall)
SP Kirk Rueter (58 overall)
C Mike Matheny (86 overall)
2B Chris Stynes (114 overall)

Lineup:
SS Ozzie Guillen
LF Felix Jose
RF Dante Bichette
1B Sam Horn (Andres Galarraga v LHP)
CF Glenallen Hill
3B Tony Phillips
C Jim Leyritz
2B Rich Amaral
BN Matt Nokes
BN Mike Gallego
BN Dick Scofield
BN John Cangelosi
BN Cory Synder

Rotation:
SP Sid Fernandez
SP Mark Gardner
SP Jamie Moyer
SP Willie Blair
SP Tom Bolton
MR Steve Wilson
MR Greg Harris
MR Michael Jackson
SU Stan Belinda
SU Norm Charlton
CL Mike Hartley

Preseason Prediction:
74-88 (Athletics top team with 98 wins)

10-9 (4th in division)

A very solid first month to start our franchise. While the rotation has been below average, the bullpen (1.73 era) has been amazing. Tony Phillips (.326/5/13) was injured but Sam Horn (.439/3/9) and Felix Jose (.333/4/17) have carried the load in his absence.

Ron Gant of the Braves feasted on our pitching (.600/5/8 in 3 games)

24-23 (4th in Div)

We had a pretty good first half of the month, at 21-13, but then we had a double dose of the (Real Champion) Reds, first-place Expos and the second-place Braves. We went 3-10 against the trio.

The bats cooled down considerably, a key member of that was Tony Phillips (.185/2/8). Pitching for the month was much better (despite 16 runs allowed in the final 2 games), with Sid Fernandez leading the charge (4-0 1.43 ERA)

We fell back down to earth this month, but at least we aren't last! We made a trade this month, gaining a starting 2B, a new shiny SP and a project prospect. We will continue to try to be competitive as long as we stay close to .500

Horn (.329/5/11) and Galarraga (.459/3/5) both had great months, unfortunately they share the same position. Sid Fernandez fell a bit flat (2-2 2.95) and Mark Langston a bit unlucky (0-4 and a nice 1.16 WHIP).

We put together a 7-game win streak, and appears like we might be a playoff team. I thought the team would crumble by now but it appears they are going to battle for that last playoff spot.

Mark Langston (3-1 1.64), Tom Bolton (2-3 2.34) and Jamie Moyer (3-1 2.25) were very impressive, while Sid Fernandez (2-2 4.32) struggled compared to his standards.

Jim Leyritz (.325/3/15) had a surprisingly good month, while Felix Jones (.337/4/15) and Sam Horn (.345/4/13) also had solid months.

We had a pretty solid month and still cling to a playoff spot by 1.5 games over the Padres. Tony Phillips (.278/6/16) had the best month for the offense, but the pitching staff was amazing: Mark Langston (1.93 ERA), Sid Fernandez (2.12 ERA) and Willie Blair (2.20).

Poor Mark Langston had to go up against some REALLY hard pitchers this month: John Smoltz, Fernando Valenzuela, Dwight Gooden, John Burkett, Dennis Martinez and Bruce Ruffin - 3 of which are in the top-10 in ERA.

End of Season One!

81-81 (4th in Div)

We made it! I didn't think we'd make the playoffs but we hung on and are making the post-season in our first expansion season. The other expansion team also made the playoffs. We had surprising good pitching, led by Langston and Fernandez. Our bats were pretty decent as well, as our 1B combined for 42 HR and OF's Jose and Bichette both hit over .300 with +70 runs and rbi.

1990 - First Round Playoffs

81-81 vs 98-64

Regular Season - Reds won the series 13-7
Pitching - Pink Knights are 3rd in runs allowed, Reds 7th
Batting - Reds are tops in batting, while we are only 12th.

The Reds rely heavily on 3B Chris Sabo (.285/32/123) while outfielders Hal Morris (.307/20/86) and Eric Davis (.272/22/77) provide the support. 20-game winner Jose Rijo will likely get a couple starts, with 18-game winner Jack Armstrong and 16-game winner Tom Browning will get the remaining. All-Star Closer Rob Dibble will be tough to beat when he comes in for a save.

Game One: Sid Fernandez vs Jose Rijo

1st: Chris Sabo 2-run double (0-2)
3rd: Bobby Rose RBI triple (1-2)
3rd: Ozzie Guillen RBI double (2-2)
4th: Jim Leyritz 2-run HR (4-2)

POTG: Jim Leyritz 3-4 2r 2rbi

Game Two: Jamie Moyer vs Jack Armstrong

4th: Tony Phillips RBI double (1-0)
8th: Sam Horn 2-run HR (3-0)
8th: Bobby Rose RBI single (4-0)

POTG: Jamie Moyer 6-hit shutout. 2 walks, 4 strike-outs.

Game Three: Mark Langston vs Tom Browning

5th: Ozzie Guillen RBI ground-out (1-0)
6th: Tony Phillips RBI sacrifice fly-out (2-0)

POTG: Mark Langston 2-hit shutout. 1 walk, 10 strike-outs.

Game Four: Sid Fernandez vs Jose Rijo

6th: Tony Phillips RBI single (1-0)
6th: Glenallen Hill 3-run inside-the-park HR (4-0)

POTG: Sid Fernandez 4-hit shutout. 3 walks, 10 strike-outs.

Well, well, well! An unexpected sweep of the league's best team! Offensive, we stunk up the joint, but we put on a historic pitching performance that will be hard for any team to ever beat! Apparently the big bad Reds could not handle hitting against left-handed pitching, which we put against them in every game.

Our Cinderella story has come to an end! The offense was used up on game one, and we were awful the remaining games. Brady Anderson destroyed us with 9 hits, and despite his 3 home runs during the season, he decided to hit 2 against us!

April - 1991

11-8 (2nd in Div)

We had a pretty solid start to our second season. Sam Horn seems to have forgotten how to hit, with 1 home run so far this season. Pitching has kept us in most of the games, looks like a promising start! On the negative side, we lost reliever Stan Belinda for most of the season, and the Reds swept us for sweeping them out of the first round last season.

27-21 (2nd in Div)

A fairly good month.. although we did lose Glenallen Hill this month, he should be back next month! His minor league callup Alex Mercado did not do well at all in his place. Kevin Mitchell (.388/4/13) had a great month and leads the NL in on-base % (.459). Bobby Rose came back from injury but struggled (.176/0/1). The most interesting stat of all, relief pitcher Miguel Guerrero went 2-2 with 2 home runs as the manager forgot to pinch-hit for him.

End of Season Two!

91-71 (1st in Div)

We won the division! I don't know how, as we have a relatively weak lineup and we endured injuries to key personnel - but we did it! The last month was relatively quiet so I didn't post those, but we did get to use a few rookies as a tryout for next season.
