a to-do list for an improved nations.txt
Some suggestions for altering nations.txt to improve the realism of the names generated. Most of these are alterations to nations with little or no baseball, so it's unlikely to be an issue unless you set up leagues in obscure countries. (Nonetheless, I'm picky -- it's the geography nerd in me.) I'll work on this file as I go but I am at work at the moment. If anyone else wants to pitch in, please feel free...
AFGHANISTAN - Should be mostly Pakistani with a Azerbijani minority ANGOLA - African with a Portugese minority BELARUS - should be Russian with a smattering of Polish and maybe some Czech. BELIZE - should be much more heavily British. BERMUDA - not sure why Portugese is in there...far as I know, almost all Bermudans have UKish names. BOSNIA - maybe throw in a smattering of Turkish? BULGARIA - Russian is a much closer match for Bulgaria than either Albanian or Romanian. I would make Bulgaria 100% Russian. CAMBODIA - No real good match among the existing ethnicities, but I would guess that Indonesian is more realistic than Vietnamese. COSTA RICA - Should have a small minority of UK names. EAST TIMOR - Should be a mix of Portugese and Indonesian, with a small Australian minority ESTONIA - Should be Finnish with a Russian minority. MACEDONIA - Majority Serbian, with some Albanian and Greek FIJI - Majority Polynesian, with Indian and Chinese minorities GEORGIA - Majority Russian, with Azerbijani minorities GUYANA - UK, with an Indian minority ICELAND - Danish IRAN - A mix of Azerbaijani and Armenian will actually be more accurate for Iran than pure Arabic. ISRAEL - No really good solutions here, probably a mix of German, Russian and Arabic is the best answer KAZAKHSTAN - A mix of Russian and Turkish is probably best here. KYRGYZ. - Also Russian and Turkish, prolly. LATVIA - Probably Russian and Polish. LITHUANIA - Russian and Polish MAURITIUS - Indian and African, with a French minority MEXICO - Should have a much smaller American minority MOLDOVA - Romanian with a small Russian minority MONGOLIA - No good answers, but Chinese is more likely to be accurate than American. MOROCCO - All Arabic MOZAMBIQUE - African with a Portugese minority MYANMAR - Bumese is actually linguistically related to Chinese, so Chinese (with maybe an Indian minority) is probably the most realistic choice here. NORTHERN IRELAND - should have a Scottish minority PANAMA - should have an American minority PAPUA NG - should have an Australian minority SAO TOME - should be all Portugese SOLOMONS - should be Polynesian with a UK minority SOMALIA - should be all Arabic SOUTH AFRICA - should be a mix of African, UK and Dutch SRI LANKA - should be all Indian SURINAME - should be all Dutch TAJIKSTAN - should be a mix of Azerbaijan and Russian THAILAND - Indonesian with a Vietnamese minority TURKMENISTAN - should be a mix of Turkish and Russian UKRAINE - should be all Russian ZIMBABWE - should have a UK minority NAURU - should be all Polynesian

That's where I would start. I may have had a few too many geography classes in my time. Also see http://www.allsimbaseball.com/index....catid=18&id=59 I lightly edited nations.txt to conform with World Factbook data on the adjective form. Last edited by Raidergoo; 06-14-2006 at 03:23 PM. |

Between your edits and those of rmc, nations.txt is probably going to be close to perfect as it's going to get -- once I'm done... Obviously, with a limit of only 40 language groups, some sacrifices of realism have to go: there's no realistic solution for Hungarian, or Farsi, or Hebrew, or Burmese, or Thai, or the Malay languages, and the general luping together of the African and Pacific Island languages is a wild oversimplification, but those are minor issues (at most) for 99.9% of players.

I don't know how I became the board's geographer. I didn't intend on it. Guess the company would do fine.

No Farsi or Hebrew? Not that it matters too much to me, but I'm surprised those weren't included.
