Wow, this month in the FLYs is action packed with a whole bunch of nothing. Of course with a whole 22 active fighters that is to be expected.

November 3, 1911

Main Event

HW - Jack Johnson (CH) (43-3) cruised to an easy TKO10 over John Morrissey (17/19) (13-4) (pre). There were no knockdowns or cuts but Morrissey's right eye was completely swollen shut and he was unable to defend his right side.

I had it 90-83 at the time of the stoppage.

Other Fights

HW - Tom Sharkey (8/9) (35-15-1) got up off the canvas and was able to score a draw against Jem Mace (73/67) (21-13-3). Sharkey was in control as Mace's left eye was swollen and his right eye was cut until he was knocked down in the 8th. Mace almost got him out of there but Sharkey survived. Sharkey had to win the 10th round to get the draw. I had it 95-95, the official judges had it 94-94/95-94 Sharkey/95-95.

LW - Bobby Dobbs (UR) (12-0) remained undefeated with a third round KO of Dave Wallace (105/109) (12-14). They split the first two rounds then Dobbs dropped Wallace in the third. I had it 19-19 at the time. Wallace finishes 1911 at 0-6 on the year.

HW - Jimmy Elliot (108/88) (29-9-3) UD10 Billy Clark (47/85) (13-4) (Clark was at pre)

FW - Eugene Hornbacher (84/74) (14-11-1) TKO10 David Morgan (68/83) (13-11-2)

BW - Biz Mackey (30/24) (16-6-1) UD10 Hank Brennan (34/42) (16-8-1) (both at pre)

New Champion

November 4, 1911

Night of the Disqualifications

Main Event

WW - Wildcat Ferns (12/CH) (21-6) scored a UD15 over Billy Myer (CH/8) (32-9-4) to win the WBA and WBC welterweight titles. This fight had fight of the year written all over it as the two went toe to toe the entire fight.

After trading the first 4 rounds both fighters were carrying their hands low no longer caring about defense. Ferns started to take control winning the next 3 rounds but the Champ came back and was back in control going into the 10th. Myer was winning the 10th when he was dropped late in the round. Ferns was battling a cut over his left eye and swelling on his right. Myer was dropped again in the 11th and his will to fight seemed to drain.

Ferns dominated the last 4 rounds with the only worry coming when his cut was reopened and the doctor had to take a look at it. I had it 145-138, the official judges scored it 146-137/143-141/148-136.

Regional Title

BW - Young Hundreds (UR) (11-2-1) (pre) scored a win when Walter Croot (46/53) (13-5-3) (pre) was disqualified in the 6th round for his 3rd offense. He was warned in the first and penalized in the second.

Croot dropped Hundreds in the 2nd round. Hundreds was very out of shape for this fight as he was out of gas in the third round. I had him ahead 47-46 at the stoppage but it didn't look good for him.

Other fights

FW - Eugene Criqui (UR) (11-0) (pre) was just starting to warm up when the ref disqualified Whitey Chadwick (79/83) (13-9-1) (pre) for a blantent headbutt in the 5th round. There were no warnings or penalty points just disqualification. I had it 39-37 Criqui at the time.

LH - Leo Houck (20/17) (25-12-2) UD10 Les O'Donnell (51/59) (12-7-1)

HW - Frank Slavin (36/31) (29-16-1) KO1 John Knifton (127/131) (20-23-1)

LH - Morris Harris (59/41) (16-15) KO5 Jack Sullivan (22/42) (23-20-2)

Sullivan wins first IBF title

November 10, 1911

A lot of mismatches on this card, only one fight watched

Main Event

BW - Dave Sullivan (3/CH) (23-3-1) stopped Monte Attell (2/3) (22-6-1) with 10 seconds left in the fight for a KO15 win.

The fight was dead even after 9 rounds but Sullivan had more left in the tank. Attell already had a swelling left eye, was cut over the right in the 11th, knocked down in the 12th and 14th, and knocked out in the 15th.

I had it 136-131 at the stoppage.

Other Fights

HW - Sam McVey (39/33) (30-8) TKO5 Charley Robinson (84/95) (10-9) (Robinson at pre)

MW - Stanley Ketchel (2/2) (30-8) TKO4 Harry Peppers (79/81) (9-8-4)

FW - Jem Driscoll (4/2) (42-7-1) UD10 Sammy Kelly (54/57) (14-12-1)

HW - Bob Armstrong (37/34) (28-14-5) TKO5 Billy Cadman (116/126) (6-8-5) (Cadman at pre)

WW - Tom Meadows (48/44) (12-7) UD10 Paddy Sullivan (45/49) (10-5-3) (Sullivan at pre)

Jimmy Barry wins title

November 11, 1911

Main Event

BW - Jimmy Barry (13/CH) (19-3) (pre) scored a TKO5 over Jack Madden (CH/11) (18-3) to win the WBA BW title.

Barry controlled the fight from the outside swelling the champs eye in the third, then knocking him down in the 5th. Madden got to his feet but the ref stopped it moments later.

I had it 39-37 at the stoppage. Barry moves to prime with the title.

Regional Title

LH - Seamon Johnson (18/12) (15-5) (pre) scored an 11th round KO over Atilla Backsai (UR) (5-7-1) (pre) for his 2nd defense of the LHW AABU regional title.

Johnson controlled the entire fight then went for the KO late to stop the crowd from booing. I had it 98-92 at the stoppage.

Other fights

WW - Mysterious Billy Smith (24/26) (20-5-1) held off a late rally by William Sullivan (63/62) (13-7-3) to get a DRAW. Smith seemed to have things in control then ran out of gas down the stretch. He managed to win the 10th to salvage the tie. I had it 96-95 Smith, the official judges had it 96-94/93-97/95-95.

FW - Battling Reddy (UR) (6-0) (pre) scored a MD8 over Black Griffo (club) (7-22-3) to remain unbeaten in this club fight. Reddy controlled the entire fight. There were no cuts or knockdowns. I had it 78-74 for Reddy, the official judges saw it 78-74/76-76/77-75.

HW - Herbert Slade (97/89) (22-19-2) KO7 Dan Flynn (128/133) (18-16)

FW - Jerry Barnett (20/15) (18-7) KO7 Frank Zimpher (55/63) (11-10) (zimpher at pre)

LoL

Just instituted a new rule Post-Prime fighters with a winning record who are fighting on a fight card have a 20% chance of fighting that fight at prime. Call it the old glory for one night rule referred to as the OG rule from here on out.

Choynski rolled an 11 and will come into the ring in Prime for his fight with Jeannette.

November 17, 1911

Main Event

MW - Billy Papke (CH) (24-4) scored a last second KO15 over Jake Ahearn (8/11) (16-1-1) (pre) for his first defense of the IBF title. Ahearn's CBU title was not on the line.

Papke controlled the fight but Ahearn made a pretty good show of it. Ahearn started carrying his hands low in the first round. Papke won 5 out of the first 6 rounds to get a comfortable lead. Ahearn slowly started to land punches though and won a couple of the next rounds. Ahearns left eye started to swell in the 11th and he was starting to tire.

At the end of the 14th Papke caught Ahearn with a solid punch that dropped him. He never really recovered as he went down 4 times in the 15th. Finally being counted out with :01 left on the clock.

I had it 136-130 at the stoppage.

Other fights

HW - Joe Choynski (37/12) (34-10-1) (post) got himself back into the mix with a KO2 over Joe Jeannette (3/18) (24-4). Jeannette won the first round then got KO'd by one punch in the 2nd. Jeannette's year is over and it wasn't a good one as he went 1-3. Choynski fought at Prime thanks to the new OG rule.

WW - Kyle Whitney (11/9) (18-5-5) scored a big SD12 win over Joe Walcott (7/11) (26-16-6) to move into the top 10. It was a very close fight with Whitney taking the final three rounds to get the win. Walcott had a swelling right eye from the 2nd on and Whitney was down in the 6th. I had it 114-113 Whitney, the official judges had it 114-113/113-114/114-113.

FLY - Grover Hayes (2/1) (16-0-1) (pre) scored an easy UD10 over Jim Donald (11/11) (11-11-1) to remain unbeaten and move into the #1 spot. Hayes won the first 7 rounds and then danced his way through the final 3. I had it 98-92. The official judges had it 96-94/98-92/98-92.

LH - Battling Levinsky (UR) (13-0) (pre) pitched a shutout in a UD10 win over Arthur McLaglen (13/19) (15-4) (pre). Levinsky won every round and there were no knockdowns, cuts, or swellings. I had it 100-90 as did all 3 judges.

BW - Tommy Kelly (49/46) (21-21-3) KO7 Barney Finnegan (65/68) (10-12-2) (kelly at post)

Ha, I thought the Jeannette/Choynski match would have been a heck of a fight if Choynski was at Prime and instead it turns out to be a blowout for Joe. I hope Jeannette can bounce back next year after such a rough time this year.

I think I like this new rule .. because at 20% it won't happen often but you see IRL every once in a while a guy who is supposed to be past his prime put it all together on one night.

Welsh's losses came to Battling Nelson, Young Peter Jackson, Aurelio Herrera, Jack Blackburn and 3 times to Jack McAuliffe. Not a bad loss in there.

Herrera gets his revenge

November 18, 1911

Main Event

LW - Aurelio Herrera (CH) (24-9) scored a UD15 over Eddie Hanlon (20/25) (16-9-1) for his second defense of the IBF LW title. Hanlon had defeated Herrera back in 1909.

Herrera jumped on Hanlon in the first and the ref looked as if he would stop the fight, but Hanlon held on. It was a rare 10-8 round without a knockdown. Herrera stayed in control of the fight with only a minor scare in the 9th when he was knocked down.

Hanlon started carrying his hands low in the 5th, his left eye started to swell in the 11th, and he was knocked down in the 11th, 14th, and 15th.

I had it 146-135, the official judges had it 146-136/145-135/145-135.

Regional Title

LH - Pietro Boine (UR) (8-3) scored a UD12 over Gerri Muhren (UR) (2-4-3) to retain the EBU LHW title.

Boring fight as Boine controlled the action. There were no knockdowns, cuts or swellings. I had it 119-110 as did all the official judges.

Other Fights

LW - Frank Erne (12/5) (22-8-2) scored an easy UD10 over Freddie Welsh (7/12) (19-8-1) to make a jump in the rankings. Welsh won the first round and then was never in the fight. He was down in the 6th, 8th and 9th round. I had it 99-88, the official judges had it 99-88/97-90/98-89.

FLY - Jimmy Wilde (UR) (9-0) scored a KO1 over Edgar Quinn (UR) (3-4-1). Wilde dropped Quinn with :04 left in the round.

MW - Charley Davis (UR) (9-0-1) scored a TKO7 over Dick O'Brien (club) (5-22-2) to remain unbeaten. O'Brien was cut over the right eye in the first and that cut eventually stopped the fight in the 7th. I had it 60-54 at the stoppage.

FLY - Griff Jones (UR) (12-2) KO8 Bill Ladbury (UR) (10-2-2) (both at pre)

Excellent, Herrera smashes another cat who tried to who had beaten him before. If I get the FWs for the next draft in the UTBA, I'm picking Herrera to be place in the draft pool. We need for him to get in the league and start crushing fools there.

Coulon loses his title

November 24, 1911

Main Event

BW - Harry Forbes (18/CH) (23-18-7) wins his first ever title with a TKO12 over Johnny Coulon (CH/6) (28-4-2) to win the WBC BW title.

It was a very close fight and cutmen turned out to be the deciding factor. Both fighters were cut. Forbes in the 4th over the left eye and Coulon in the 6th over the left eye. Forbes cut was re-opened once and Coulon's twice. The second time the fight was stopped. It was a back and forth fight so Forbes was in it despite the cut and both eyes swelling.

I had it 105-104 Coulon at the stoppage. There will be no mandatory rematch as it was a justified stoppage.

Elimination Fight

LH - As shocking as the main event was this may have topped it. Charles McCoy (1/1) scored a UD12 over Georges Carpentier (6/9) (20-4) to win the IBF title eliminator and he will move on to fight Joe Butler in the next round.

That McCoy won wasn't the shocking part, but how throughly he dominated the fight. Carpentier never won a round and was down in the 7th and the 10th. It would have been a shutout but McCoy was warned 5 times and penalized twice. So I had it 118-106 as did two of the official judges, the other had it 117-107.

Other Fights

FW - Dan Daly (UR/42) (10-4-1) got a win by DQ5 over Steve Sullivan (UR) (5-1) which gave Sullivan his first loss. Sullivan was winning the fight when he head butted Daly which hurt Daly and the ref ruled it blatant and stopped the fight. Bad call should have been warned instead. I had it 39-37 Sullivan at the stoppage.

LW - Harry Lyons (4/4) (35-17-1) UD10 Young Joseph (63/70) (12-15-2)

HW - Jack Burns (51/38) (19-9-1) KO8 Dan Dwyer (38/51) (29-12-1) ***

HW - Ed Dunkhorst (44/40) (26-17-3) KO4 Charlie Wilson (137/140) (10-13-3) (Dunkhorst 5th straight win)

*** not sure I've seen two fighters just switch places in the rankings like this when they were more than 10 spaces apart!

November 25, 1911

Main Event

HW - George Christian (UR) (12-0) (pre) dominated James Couper (UR/77) (9-4-2) (pre) on his way to a UD12. It was his first defense of the AABU HW title.

Christian was in control the entire fight. He took the 10th round off and then knocked Couper down twice in the 11th. There were no cuts or swellings.

I had 119-107 as did all three judges

Title Eliminator

LW - Jack McAuliffe (3/2) (39-7-2) scored a KO5 over Abe Attell (8/11) (36-12-3) in the WBO title eliminator. McAuliffe will go on to face Jack Blackburn for the title in January 1912.

Attell was pretty much controlling the fight before the one punch KO, I had it 39-38 Attell.

Other fights

WW - Johnny Basham (UR) (12-0) scored an easy UD10 over Kid Alaska (43/47) (11-4-1) to remain unbeaten. It was an uneventful fight with no knockdowns, cuts or swellings. Basham won it easily on my card 99-92, the official judges had it 99-92/97-95/98-93.

HW - John Sulivan (36/28) (38-9) KO1 Billy Squires (77/88) (15-18-1)

LW - Mike Ward (58/51) (13-2-1) SD10 Billy Finucane (37/48) (15-13-4) (ward at pre, finucane stepped up to LW, Ward's AABU title was not on the line)

LW - Leach Cross (33/25) (14-12-1) UD10 Sam Bolen (16/26) (18-14-2)
