Why 2028 could be the year that reshapes, expands and completely alters Major League Baseball

Why 2028 could be the year that reshapes, expands and completely alters Major League Baseball

I thought this was an interesting read and am curious what y'all might think of his ideas.

No mention of the biggest issue which is the atrocious CBA ****ing players over left and right with free team control during their best years and service time garbage.

It is a fundamentally flawed process because current players voting on it are never going to vote to give future players what they deserve early in their careers at the expense of bloated free agent contracts that they personally are benefiting from. Most players are making nowhere close to their value.

The phrase "bloated free agent contracts" is a bit misleading.

First, it's only a fraction of players that are receiving these contracts while younger players, as you said, and non-star players are being left out. So, sure a few players are benefiting from the status quo. Many are not.

MLB owners have set it up so it's harder and harder to get money to the players. Or, at least, they have built in excuses not to. The draft and the draft pool limit the money that younger players can make. As do the new intentional rules (look at Ohtani). Then there's the Competitive Balance Tax that owners use to justify not giving money to older players.

The next CBA, IMO, should guarantee the players a percentage of revenue (that percentage has been decreasing), should greatly increase the league minimum salary (from hundreds of thousands to millions), and put in some protections for minor league players.

The problem, as you alluded to, is that giving more money to the younger players means the older, non-star, players now who have already been largely left out of the money would have to vote to diminish their future shares. Which isn't an easy sell.

As for the article

Infant get very excited about relocation or expansion. People who are more knowledgeable, and interested, in that than I am can have at it. I do like the idea of expansion. New teams, more opportunities for fans and players.

The DH. I dislike the DH. It's time for the DH
Pitching is so specialized now. Pitchers spend more time preparing physically and mentally than ever. They don't have time to work on hitting. Better pitching combined with even worse pitcher hitting? Time to move on.

154 game season. I like baseball. I want more baseball. Baseball players probably want to work less. Almost everyone else does. It prefer the season remain the same length, or be expanded. But. Rosters also be expanded, or allows players to be shuffled on and off more often. Let players have more games off, but let the fans have more (or the same amount of) baseball.

Some people may be thinking that expanded rosters and an expanded schedule - that's a recipe for lots of guys who aren't major league caliber needing to be in the big leagues. Those people are, sorta, right. There are not a lot of guys who are sitting in AAA or foreign leagues who can be MLB starting pitchers. Or MLB level full time position players. So, we'll need to reshape the way baseball is played so instead of decreasing the talent level on the field, we increase it.

How do we do this, require less specialization.
It's hard to find guys who can both hit and field at the major league level.
So, find guys who can do one of those things. They exist. In the minors and foreign leagues.
It's hard to find guys who can pitch 7 major league innings. Easier to find guys who can pitch 2 or 3. Time to change the way pitching staffs are constructed-this has already started, of course.

All of these changes tie together. It's the time to do it.

Always something that has confused me about American sports fans. So many push capitalistic rhetoric for every other business and sector while demanding some form of socialism for professional sports. How different would all the major team sports be if it really was an open market from the time players were eligible to enter the leagues?

Soccer leagues also have the goal of determining the best team with a perfectly balanced schedule. American leagues don't give a **** about who the best team is, the goal is maximizing revenue with forced rivalries and a playoff crapshoot.

I agree with the playoff crapshoot, but the balanced schedule has nothing to do with it. You can stick those red ******** into a "division" with whoever you want in the Bundesliga, they're still gonna win by nine points.

I'm especially bitter today because when I was a kid the league was actually fun and interesting, and it's way not anymore. The only question is when the Reds are gonna take first place and zoom off. This season? *Today*. Everybody else was so kind to **** up or split points to wave them through into first place. Meanwhile, my team's in the red zone...

And it's the same in some fashion in all of the premium soccer leagues. Some have an elite circle splitting trophies, some have only two teams... and some have only one... What do they have in common? (Mostly) unlimited spending.

Thx, I'll take a draft. Worst team goes first. Pick trading is OFF.
