Walkers news: July 4 -- Des Moines 6, St. Louis 2

Des Moines starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez tossed seven innings of one-hit shutout baseball to lead the Harvesters to a 6-2 win and help them salvage the finale of a four-game series at LaBlatt Stadium.
Rodriguez allowed just two baserunners. Nicky Delmonico singled with two outs in the second inning and St. Louis pitcher Jacob de Grom reached on an error by second baseman Kolten Wong in the third.
Rodriguez struck out seven batters and walked none.
It was a rough outing for deGrom, who allowed three runs in five innings.
Austin Hays made it 1-0 with a home run in the second inning.
A.J. Pollock had a two-out RBI double in the fifth. The next batter, Wong, plated another run with a single.
A two-run single from Rafael Devers off Jerry Blevins highlighted a three-run eighth for Des Moines.
St. Louis got on the board with two in ninth off Blaine Boyer.

Walkers news: July 6 -- Kansas City 5, St. Louis 4, 14 innings

Kansas City's Wily Adames drove home Allen Cordoba with a one-out single in the top of the 14th inning to help propel the Pit Masters to a 5-4 win over St. Louis at Busch Stadium.
Cordoba drew an one-out walk from Chaz Roe to open the inning.
Pitching on fumes, Roe was then replaced by Aaron Nola, the River Walkers scheduled starter for tomorrow's game, as St. Louis had already used all six of its rested relievers.
Brett Phillips coaxed a walk from Nola before Adames connected for a single which plated Cordoba with the game-winning run.
The loss was the third in a row for St. Louis.
A four-run fourth inning had helped stake Kansas City to a 4-0 lead.
Yasmani Grandal, Jorge Polanco, Adam Lind and pitcher Yonny Chirinos all had run-scoring hits off River Walkers starting pitcher Zach Godley in the inning.
A two-run single from Jin-hwan Chung off Chirinos in the seventh made it 4-2.
St. Louis tied it in the bottom of the ninth, Brock Holt and Albert Almora connecting for two-out singles off Hector Rondon.
Holt was thrown out at third trying to advance on Almora's hit.
In the bottom of the 13th, the Walkers' Nicky Delmonico led off with a ball which went to the wall, but was thrown out at third.

Walkers news: July 7 -- St.Louis 6, Kansas City 4

Michael Conforto hit a three-run home run off Kansas City relief pitcher Hector Rondon to highlight a four-run third inning to help the St. Louis River Walkers defeat the Pit Masters 6-4 at Busch Stadium.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Walkers as they head into the All-Star break. They sit atop the NL South standings with a 52-37 record, four games ahead of Des Moines.
St. Louis' record also is the best in the NL, three games in front of NL North leader Rockford. The best overall record in the league of 56-33 belongs to the Grand Rapids Traders, who sit atop the American League West.
Nicky Delmonico hit a two-run homer off Masters starting pitcher Dinelson Lamet in the second inning to give St. Louis a 2-0 lead.
Kansas City, however, tied it with a pair of runs in the top of the third when Allen Cordoba hit an RBI triple off Walkers starting pitcher Henry Sosa and scored on a Michael Gerber sacrifice fly.
Lamet left the game in the bottom of the third with a sore elbow, but not before allowing a run-scoring single to Andrew Benintendi.
Called up from AAA Memphis, Sosa was making an emergency start after scheduled starter Aaron Nola was pushed into action the night before in a 5-4 loss in 14 innings to Kansas City.
Sosa lasted into the fifth inning before being removed.Brad Boxberger (2 innings), Phil Maton (2 innings) and Keona Kela (1 innings) shut out the Masters the rest of the way, with Kela earning his 17th save.

MBL news: Benintendi slam carries NL to All-Star win

St. Louis River Walkers Andrew Benintendi may be the front-runner for the National League MVP, but he already has an All-Star game MVP on his resume after leading the NL to a 7-3 win at County Stadium in Milwaukee.
Benintendi was 3 for 3 in the contest with a double and four RBIs, all of them coming on a grand slam off Trevor Hildenberg to cap a six-run inning that left the NL up 7-2.

Other St. Louis players had an impact on the win:

Michael Conforto was 0 for 1 in the game, but scored a run.
Trevor Bauer tossed a scoreless fourth inning and Aaron Nola did the same in the fifth.
Jake Diekman got the first two outs of the eighth inning and Chaz Roe handled the third out.

Walkers news: Deal with Fort Wayne adds Carlos Martinez to staff

With the National League looking more competitive than it did a year ago, the St. Louis River Walkers took a chance on bolstering their rotation by trading making a trade with Fort Wayne, which would send right-handed pitcher Zach Godley to the Mad Men in exchange for right-handed starting pitcher.
While Godley has been a decent No. 5 starter for the Walkers the past two seasons -- he's 5-5 with a 5.24 ERA this season, after going 8-10 with a 4.75 ERA in 2018 -- there are concerns on if Jacob de Grom, whose has seen a major falloff from his Cy Young winning 2018 campaigns, can hold up in the postseason.
de Grom is 9-8 with a 4.66 ERA this season, after going 14-5 with a 3.07 in 2018.
But that's why I have tried to keep the payroll down by drafting young players when the league formed.

Martinez adds another top three starter to the rotation. He's 5-7 this season with a 3.62 ERA. He'll be a little bit a hit to the payroll -- making $13.5 per season -- but he'll be a free agent after the season.
So we don't have to bring him back. A lot will hinge on how de Grom pitches down the stretch.

Walkers news: July 12 -- Des Moines 6, St. Louis 3, 10 innings

Des Moines' Rafael Devers homered twice, including a two-run shot off St. Louis reliever Andrew Miller in the top of the 10th inning to help give the Harvesters a 6-3 win over the River Walkers at Busch Stadium.
A.J. Pollock got the top of the 10th started for Des Moines, drawing a one-out walk from a tiring Chaz Roe.
Miller then entered the game after retiring Kolten Wong for the second out, saw his second pitch to Devers driven over the right-field wall.
The Harvesters added another run in the inning, Austin Hays with a single which scored Cody Bellinger, who had drawn a walk from Miller.
St. Louis owned a 3-0 lead going into the top of the sixth, only to see it evaporate after starting pitcher Jacob deGrom allowed a two-run homer to Devers, followed two batters later by a solo shot from Giancarlo Stanton.
Starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel handled the first 4.2 innings for Des Moines, allowing all three St. Louis runs.
Four relievers combined to pitch shutout ball the rest of the way.

Jandel Gustave pitched the ninth to earn the win. Gabriel Moya did the same in the 10th for his second save.

Walkers news: July 14 -- St. Louis 5, Des Moines 4

St. Louis' Tucker Barnhart hit a two-run home run off Des Moines' Erasmo Ramirez with one out in the bottom of the eight inning to help lift the River Walkers to a 5-4 win over the Harvesters at Busch Stadium.
With the win, the Walkers took three of four games in their first post All-Star game series from Des Moines, which sits in second in the NL South behind St. Louis. The Walkers are 55-38 and own a six-game lead in the division.
A close game throughout, Des Moines took a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh when a Thairo Estrada sacrifice fly off Jake Diekman scored Nick Madrigal, who had singled off St. Louis starter Aaron Nola.
But the Walkers answered back an inning and a half later, Rhys Hoskins led off with a walk from Rex Brothers. Barnhart drove him home with a 377-foot shot over the right-field wall off Erasmo Ramirez.
Chaz Roe earned the win by getting the final two outs of the eighth inning.
The save, his 18th, went to Keone Kela who pitched around a lead-off single from Jorge Alfaro.

Walkers news: July 17 -- St. Louis 3, Cedar Rapids 0

St. Louis' Jacob deGrom tossed 6.2 scoreless innings and he combined with three other relievers on a shutout as the River Walkers defeated Cedar Rapids 3-0 at Shibe Park.
deGrom scattered five hits in his time on the mound. He struck out 10 and walked one.

Jake Diekman got the final out of the seventh inning. Brad Boxberger kept the Golden Grapplers silent in the eighth inning. Andrew Miller did the same in the ninth for his fifth save.
Andrew Benintendi gave St. Louis the only run it would need in the top of the third with a solo homer -- his 29th -- off Brendan McKay in the third inning.
Adeiny Hechavarria had an RBI double in the fourth inning. Albert Almora made it 3-0 with a run-scoring single in the same inning.

Walkers news: July 19 -- Chicago 8, St. Louis 6

Chicago's Shohei Ohtani hit a grand slam in the sixth inning off St. Louis reliever Jake Diekman to help the G-Men overcome a two-home run, six-RBI game for the River Walkers' Ji-hwan Cung and post an 8-6 win at Busch Stadium.
Chung's first homer was a first-inning grand slam of his own off Chicago starting pitcher Danny Duffy, which staked St. Louis to a 4-0 lead.
The G-Men halved that lead in the second inning on a two-run homer from Brandon Crawford off Walkers starter Carlos Martinez.
Josh Donaldson had an RBI single off Martinez in the third, making it 4-3. The score when Ohtani hit his homer.
Chicago's lead grew to 8-4 in the eighth inning on a solo shot from D.J. Stewart off Jerry Blevins.
The Walkers drew to within 8-6 in the bottom of the eighth on Chung's second homer of the game, this one a two-run shot off Zach McAllister.
But Michael Feliz pitched around a lead-off double from Nicky Delmonico to open the bottom of the ninth to post his 21st save.

Walkers news: July 20 -- St. Louis 8, Chicago 4

St. Louis poured across five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to overcome a one-run deficit and defeat Chicago 8-4 at Busch Stadium.
A two-run homer from Andrew Benintendi off G-Men starter Bryan Mitchell in the first inning had staked the Walkers to a 2-0 lead.
But Chicago used the long ball to overcome that and eventually take the lead.

Josh Donaldson hit a solo shot off St. Louis starter Aaron Nola in the fourth inning to make it 2-1.
A two-run homer from Brandon Crawford an inning later put Chicago in front 3-2.

Nick Markakis then took Nola deep in the seventh to stretch that advantage to 4-2.
Chicago starter Bryan Mitchell had left with a 3-2 lead after throwing 94 pitches over seven innings.
His replacement, former starter Zach Greinke, got through the seventh unscathed but when things fell apart for him in the eighth they would not go to his rescue with the rest of its bullpen gassed.
Greinke walked three batters in the eighth and allowed an RBI double to Benintendi, an RBI single to Rhys Hoskins, an RBI single to Nicky Delmonico and a run scoring single to Manny Pina before being replaced.
Jeruys Familia took the mound for Greinke, and allowed another run-scoring hit, this one from pinch-hitter Franchy Cordero, as the Walkers lead grew to 8-4.

Walkers news: July 21 -- St. Louis 5, Chicago 4

Trailing 4-0 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, the St. Louis River Walkers scored five times against an exhausted Chicago bullpen to seize a 5-4 win at Busch Stadium.
In their previous game, St. Louis had scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn an 8-4 win.
Apparently, Chicago had no one available in the bullpen as it hung Luke Gregerson out to dry, and the Walkers took him to the woodshed.
The right-hander allowed all eight batters he faced to reach bases -- walking three and giving up five hits.

Nicky Delmonico and Ji-hwan Chung both drew bases-loaded walks.
Michael Conforto had an RBI double.

Albert Almora, Andrew Benintendi, Rhys Hoskins and Brock Holt all had RBI singles.
Holt's hit was the capper, driving in Hoskins with the game-winning run.

Walkers news: July 23 -- Madison 7, St. Louis 3

With a substantial lead in the National League West, a loss here and there should not hurt the defending Midwest Baseball League Champion St. Louis River Walkers.
But this one might.
The struggles for 2018 Cy Young award winner Jake deGrom continued, but what happened in their 7-4 loss to the Madison Muskies at Comiskey Park could really take a toll.
de Grom recorded just one out and threw just 13 pitches before leaving the game with his team already down 4-0.
The big hit he allowed was a three-run home run from Matt Olson. The extent of the injury still isn't known.
Delmonico, meanwhile, left the game after getting hurt running the bases during the second inning.
Like De Grom, the extent of Delmonico's injury is unknown. For the season, Delmonico is batting .259 with 19 homers and 67 RBIs.
A two-run single from Chad Pinder in the fifth inning off Jake Diekman stretched Madison's lead to 6-1.
Francisco Lindor had an RBI double off Jerry Blevins to make it 7-1.
All that made a three-run homer from Andrew Benintendi in the eighth inning pretty much inconsequential.
Although, the Walkers did have the tying run at the plate in the top of the ninth.
However with runners at first and second and one out, Justin Wilson came on to get Tucker Barnhart and Adeiny Hechavarria to fly out to end it.
