Website chat software

Would like to have kind of a "lobby" on the league website for GM's to hang out and shoot the breeze.

Does anyone have any info on what free software is available nowadays? Anyone using one on their site so I can test it out?

We're using an ajax shoutbox in a side block on our phpbb3 forum portal. It works well and it expands to a wider chat too by clicking the title link.

Whatever forum you want to use I imagine there's a good chance there's a similar mod for it.

Ajax has to work better than any java chat. I never got a decent java chat to work for everyone, and hated it. KQ has it right. Ajax is the way to go here.

It doesn't hurt that it's a lighter client then java too, using just javascript to send and receive information.

I have a phpbb forum. Is it phpbb3? Its new I guess but they took the # out of the titles. My webmaster installed it so I'm behind the curve on what I'm using.

Yeah, it is phpbb3.

If you go to the FAQ page: www.laseron-baseball.com • Frequently Asked Questions, it does reference phpbb3.

Ah, thanks. The reason I was thrown off was because I used to have a phpbb2 board and it said it right on the front.

Ok, how do I get ajax set up? Is it third party software to download and install? Is it an option somewhere in phpbb3?

It's a way of coding javascript to send and receive data to server side applications. It's not a program per say as a coding style.

So long story short, there's nothing to download, you'd have to find a program that has been designed with such tech.

Apparently its a mod for the message board I already have. (I gathered that from the previous replies). So I'm wondering how I get it working.

Yeah, it's a mod you download and install. It's pretty easy as for as mods go too. The only difficult part I had was with styling it, but that's because I wanted it to fit a little side block on our portal, not the default wide version.

You can see it in action on our portal here, but it also expands to a wide full page version by clicking the title link. Note that you don't need to have a portal, you can just use the full page version or place it under your board index or something.

This is where I got it.

This is where I got help styling (skinning) it. But again, this is not necessary if you're using the default version and default forum styles. You can see this post of mine if you want the side block prosilver chat_body I made.
