Anyone have insight into this spring training problem?

I am currently commishing an online league.

Last season, the game crashed every time I tried to advance to spring training. I gave up, unticked the box for spring training, and we went forward without it. The season simmed normally without incident.

Now we are back to late February, and, as a test, I took a copy of the league file and tried to advance to spring training, and it crashes every time... except if I fire all human managers and turn all teams over to the AI -- then spring training runs.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this? Any ideas what it could be?

(I tried raising all roster limits to 50 players, and that had no effect, it still crashed.)

I'm thinking the issue is someone somehow has a man on their spring training roster that isn't on the 40 man roster. If you can pinpoint what team is causing the crash then you can look at their roster and see if that's the issue....It sometimes happens if you have to edit a players team or just a fluke error sometimes but I've seen it happen.

I had hoped this was the case, and, in fact, I found six such players scattered through the league. However, even with all of them placed on their 40 man rosters, the problem remains.

Firing all but one GM will not prevent the crash, regardless of which team.

Firing all the GMs prevents the crash.
Firing all the GMs and rehiring one prevents the crash.
Firing all the GMs and rehiring all causes a crash.

wtf?
