I think it is strictly by number of posts.

Well, you're ahead of me at least. Are there any benefits that comes with each title? Or are they purely for show.

Purely for show.

And trust me, there are many OOTP'ers here who are listed as say, All-Star Starters, or some such, who have been playing this game far longer than I have and know so much more about it than I do.
But I have no life and post a lot (especially about my fictional W.P. Kinsella league) so I became a HOF'er fairly rapidly. But hey, I know I'm the Harold Baines of OOTP Forum Hall of Famers. (Okay, you might need to look that one up to understand the joke. )

It's a mind-controlling algorithm designed by Markus Heinsohn.

I would agree based on my own anecdotal evidence. Every time I want to take a break from posting, that status marker keeps reminding myself "you got to be an OOTP forum hall of famer, you're almost there" and I seem to involuntarily keep grinding on...

This community wouldn't have half of the HS uniforms it has if it wasn't for that damn algorithm!

I get absolutely no baseball references as I am so new to the sport.

It is. I believe most online forums can be set up like that. IDK, 'cause I don't frequent online forums.
Some people aren't aware/don't care about their "forum status"; some do. (Like, some people respond to those "male enhancements" ads; some don't ).

Well, he certainly put SOMETHING in his code, because I'm addicted to the game. And I knew nothing about the sport just a few weeks ago.

I know.
I realized it as I was typing that.
But believe me, google Harold Baines and Hall of Fame and before long you will understand exactly what I mean. (Upshot being: Harold Baines= good man, very fine baseball player, absolutely not a Hall of Famer in the minds of most but officially enshrined into the MLB HOF as part of the class of 2019.)

what exactly is wrong with being a good man? I'd be happy to have folks call me a good man, and never get the call. Reputation is all we are in the eyes of others. Lets remember there are a lot of unsavory characters in the Hall. It's good to have a decent man.

Absolutely! And I'm sorry if I wasn't more clear about this. I like Harold Baines and don't have any problem with him being in the Hall of Fame, even if I think he might not be the most deserving player ever in terms of on field performance.
And hey, I have nothing against me being an OOTP forum HOF'er, in spite of also not being the most deserving based on my performance here in the forums. And I'd like to think I'm a pretty good guy too!

I did have to look him up. Learned something new today:

Baines was voted into the Hall of Fame by his peers: he played against five of the six players on the committee, while a sixth served as manager against him. Four executives on the panel were in management while Baines was a player and his former manager and team owner also were on the committee.
