Finally the race for a .500 hitter has been found and it comes in the first season of the new era of ABL play. 3 years after debuting for the Liberty, 23 year old Kevin Gomes came up with a stunning .511AVG, from 68 games and 348ABs.

Elsewhere Dave Struble became the first 100+ RBI hitter, a little less surprising given the extra 12 games available, but still a stunning effort from the Hartford slugger.

Richmond would also be home to the leagues 2nd ever Pitching Triple Crown winner. Craig Gerber made the switch from the bullpen to starter for the Liberty and in his 19GS, he would go 14-1, with a 2.59ERA and 115Ks. Gerber gave up just 155 hits across his 146IP as the Liberty look to have found their new ace.

One Game Shootout:

Buffalo Blast @ Richmond Liberty

In a rematch from last years OGS round, the Liberty would exact revenge on the Blast, comfortably beating them 8-4, sealed by a 3 run 8th inning.

Kevin Gomes who dominated pitchers in the regular season would go 4-5 with 2RBI as he continues to be the leagues hitting machine. Whilst it would be the 2 out double by Josh Hutchinson who drove in the 3 insurance runs in the 8th.

Buffalo had little in response and although Richmond appear to have saved Gerber for the World Series, they did use Fernando Rodriguez in relief as he pitched 5Ks through the 8th and 9th inning to seal the deal.

Dover Dukes @ Hartford Dark Blues

Dover did almost everything right in their dream debut season, but the experience of Hartford would win out, as the Dukes blew a 7-3 lead in the 7th inning, as the DBs walked off with the win thanks to Jay Erwins 9th inning single.

The Dukes raced clear early on, scoring 3 in the opening pair of frames, including a long double from ex Dark Blue Carcamo that bought home a run.

However when it matter, Hartford had the right experience in the right place. Non more so than Dirk Hostetler, still dominating in his role as Closer and his 2 innings of work saw him claim the win and send Hartford back to the Show.

Arena Baseball World Series

Hartford Dark Blues @ Richmond Liberty

Hartford arrived in Richmond looking to secure their 3rd Championship in 4 years, whilst Richmond were looking to claim their 2nd, after winning the first ever ABL crown.

The 2 division winners were expected to play out a tight encounter and it proved that way, as the DBs went into the 5th inning 4-3 up. Then things would change as eventual game MVP Oscar Quezada the 2022 #1 overall pick by Iowa, would drive in the winning runs as his 5th inning double cleared the decks and put Liberty 7-4 up.

That would be the end of the scoring, F-Rod once again came in and cleaned up the latter innings, collecting his 2nd save of the post season and sending the 3500 home fans into raptures as they cap their 50+ winning season with the Championship.

The Off-Season

Hirings/Firings

He had only a year to make his mark it seems, as Montreal GM Jose Paulino picked up his final pay cheque with the franchise, with the Maroons taking a different look at things.

Montreal failed to make the most of their debut season, winning just 21 games and looking out of place, especially alongside the Dover Dukes who reached the playoffs.

In his place the Maroons made potentially the biggest decision of them all. They poached Hartford mastermind Pedro Partida to lead the franchise forward. Its a stunning coup for the Maroons and they will hope his six figure salary ($288,000) will make the difference for them.

Awards

Arena MVP - Josh Maniscalco (Dover Dukes)

Dover as a franchise had a stellar first year and Maniscalco chosen in the expansion draft did his part, hitting for a career best 75RBIs and .452. He just about beat out Gerber to this award and in the end if was his consistency on the new club that swayed the decision.

Arena League Best Pitcher - Casey Gerber (Richmond Liberty)

Triple Crown winner and 1st year full time starter, Gerber lit up the league with a best 14 wins, 2.59ERA and over 100Ks. Gerber had been used in various roles in the previous 4 years with the Liberty, but this change revolutionised his career and sparked just the ABLs 2nd Triple Crown success.

Arena Skipper of the Year - Jonathan Gonzales (Richmond Libery)

Gonzales collects his first 'Skip' award as he led the Liberty to a mammoth 53 win season and their 2nd Championship. It represents just rewards for the club and Gonzales as after 2 tough opening years where the team played out a humiliating 4-25 AWS loss, this campaign is all the sweeter.

Draft

An important draft for Montreal here and a chance for their new GM to get his teeth into this rebuild. The problem is that many draft picks are essentially duds. Its not like moving from College Baseball to the Minors to the Majors... this is straight from traditional Baseball into an Arena environment which plays differently. The adjustment period appears to be longer than many thought and it has seen a drop off in interested players wanting to risk their career in the ABL.

Trades / FA Agency

Well if there is one thing that is noticeable its that teams are willing to throw good money after bad. None more so than Chicago, who have rarely lived up to expectation, yet they have penned the biggest 'total' deal yet in league history by giving Tim Hanson $500,000 over 5 years. Hanson had a career best 61RBI last time out as part of the debut Dukes, so maybe the Crush are on to something...

Another player changing places after a year in Dover is (C) Matt Hinrichs. He drove in 56 for the Dukes as they made the playoffs and now gets a chance to make bank in Buffalo, whilst also hoping he can repeat his World Series ring from 21/22 with Ottawa.

Adding to the Dover teardown, why they have failed to re-sign anyone, is your guess! Jeremy Vasiloff pitched for a year in Delaware, going 7-0 with a 1.77ERA, but his heart was in Hartford and he goes back there after his brief stint away from the club where he won 21 games in 3 years.

Overall however teams cut payroll with no one club spending more than $1,000,000 this year on their playing staff. Financially teams are holding up, yet with players beginning to expect more and a flood of players due new contracts, we could see a shift in league status, as those with money may well being to mop up.

The Season that was 2026/27:

They Keep Rolling!

Where do we start? Well the opening volleys saw the Stars Division remain tight, so much so that come December the 13-11 Black Caps, held a 2 game lead on division dwelling Buffalo (11-13). No team in the division were able to put any sort of run together in a messy situation.

The Stripes Division however saw Richmond continue to dominate. At 18-6 they looked a lock to carry on their run to try and become the first ABL team to repeat. Behind them Chicago looked good at 14-10, whilst Iowa (9-15) continued to be pathetic and Dover (8-16) can only blame themselves for shedding the talent that led them to a 40+ winning effort last time out.

December Does What December Does!

Every year we talk about how important this month is and once again it got a little wild. First off the Stars Division remains as tight as it had done, bar Montreal. Yep the Maroons got Marooned at 20-32 and with 20 to play in January, they have an 8 game gap to bridge in order to make a difference.

Dover would be the talking point. At 8-16 they were written off, then a remarkable 17-11 December saw them soar back into the race, partly due to the Chicago collapse, as the Crush won just 13 in the month and going into the turn of the year held just a 2 game lead on the Dukes.

Iowa at this stage are dead (as per) whilst Richmond at 34-18 led the division and had the #1 overall seed in their grasp.

Familiar Faces

Ottawa (check), Hartford (check), Richmond (check) the ABLs most successful franchises all made their experience count as the final weeks of the season saw them all confirm their place in this years One Game Shootout.

Ottawa would usurp the DBs as Stars Division winners, the first time in 4 years that Hartford failed to win a division crown. Whilst Richmond trundled to a 45-27 record and both the Stripes title and #1 overall seed.

After them? Well it was a race that shouldnt have been, but was! Dover came flying past Chicago and with 2 series to play, had actually moved into 2nd and had a 2 game lead on the Crush.

Dover would then sweep Richmond, leaving them needing just 1 win in a final series at Chicago to stun the division and make a remarkable turnaround from that 8-16 start. That win would come, infact they picked up a pair and clinched the unlikeliest of playoff places at 40-32, going an impressive 32-16 from December on.

Miscellaneous

For those interested, runs per game actually dropped off this year. Last years high of 10 may have been an anomaly as we move back to 7.8rpg, as only Ottawa and Richmond broke the 600 plateau.

One factor in the above may be the reduction in fielding errors. From a league high of over 2pg last season, we move well under that mark here. An interesting tidbit, in all the years of ABL play, there has yet to be a 'Triple Play' recorded by any team.

Attendances are continuing to impress, so much so that the league is in a stronger position to negotiate a new TV contract in the next couple of years. With that in mind, interest continues to grow amid further expansion of the league. 7 of the 8 teams pulled well in excess of 110,000 fans this year. Iowa missed out on the 6 figure mark by merely a few hundred fans.

Now that .500 has been broken, everyone is getting in on the act as 3 players put up that marker, led by Richmond outfielder Steve Healey as he inks himself into the record books with a .526 clip from 52 games this year.

Dover appear to have found themselves a decent 1-2 punch in their pitching staff. This year 21 year old Ron Harris, who was left undrafted, signed a league minimum deal to pitch for the Dukes. Harris kept his ERA under 4.00 whilst winning 8 of his 14 starts, as he also pitched 10 games in relief for the club.

Behind him on the ERA list would be Willie Spoor, another Dover player who was undrafted 2 years ago. Spoor mainly pitched in relief that first year, but stepped up to start this time round going 6-3 from 13 starts.

One Game Shootout:

Hartford Dark Blues @ Richmond Liberty

The battle of the league giants took place in Richmond and it was the hosts who continue their dominance, beating out Hartford convincingly 9-4 as the Liberty offense was again to much for any pitching staff to hold.

Interestingly, once again a dominant pitcher is moved to a Closer role, this time the Liberty have deployed Gerber there and his 2IP 3K effort was enough to shut down Hartford.

Dover Dukes @ Ottawa Black Caps

Dover oh Dover! They were as close to a miracle as you can get by turning their 8-16 start around into a playoff place. Then after trailing 0-5 early their 2 run 8th to knot things up, sparked more dreams of comeback heroics and a potential place in the World Series.

Alas in a repeat of 25/26, the 9th inning killed them. Arturo Rios, a career Black Cap with over 300RBIs and 2 rings, would drive in a crazy walk off run, to send the Canadians back to the Show and stun Dover and its merry band of Dukes.

Arena Baseball World Series

Ottawa Black Caps @ Richmond Liberty

In what proved to be a hitting storm from the Liberty, they would finally win out and become the first ever repeat Champions of the ABL, defeating Ottawa 6-4 in an encounter they almost gave up, as Richmond wound up with 4 errors in the field.

The game saw a back and forth effort, with both teams trickling in runs, before a pair in the 8th gave the Liberty a lead they held on to, as although Gerber did wobble with a run off 2 hits, he would strike out 4 to further add to his legacy.

Dominican leadoff man Hector Linares proved to be the Series MVP, going 4-5 with a ribbie to boot. All in, Richmond are that bit better right now and even this early will be favoured to 'Three'peat next time round.

Expansion?

To expand or not to expand, that is the question and its not just about adding teams to the ABL but also a consideration for a new playoff structure, with many fans wanting a real series for the Finals, rather than the one and done setup we have now.

With regards to expanding the current team setup, the ABL top brass have stated that they will look at submissions over the next 2 years. Financially the league has improved and with a new TV deal expected in the next off-season, there may well be a requirement to expand the league in order to fulfil scheduling.

Relocation?

Alongside this, rumours that the Iowa ownership are looking to relocate the Hogmen continues to pickup pace. Iowa started their life in the ABL with a World Series appearance, but since then its been an existence at the foot of the ABL.

The Hog Pit was expanded a couple of years ago, but attendances are probably 30,000 short of what the ownership wants. With indoor sports suiting markets in the North rumours that a move to Wyoming is where current owner Eric Bergeron wants to take his team.

Canadian ABL?

Another story doing the rounds is for the ABL to make a full expansion into Canada. This move would see the ABL expand its lineup to include a full Canadian division, adding to Ottawa and Montreal with another 2/3 teams north of the border.

Whether that allowed for a 3 division setup, or a contracting of the current US teams into one division is still a factor. However it is exciting to see the ABL become a positive figure in the sports market on both sides of the line.

Awards

Arena MVP - Alfredo Carcamo (Dover Dukes)

At 38 he may never have expected this but his .507AVG came off 70 appearances and 304ABs. Its an impressive stat and he led from the front as the Dover Dukes rallied back to the playoffs after a dismal start to the year. His slash line read .507 / .580 / .579 as he drove in 55 runs and walked 50 times over the year.

Arena Pitcher of the Year - Dirk Hostetler (Hartford Dark Blues)

Big bad Dirk is back amongst the awards as he beats out Ron Harris to the award. Hostetler is known for his hot arm and a heater than can burn even the best hitter. His 78Ks led the league, whilst he also posted a sub 5.00ERA as he moved into a dual starter/reliever role this year.

Arena Skipper of the Year - Jonathan Gonzales (Richmond Liberty)

It couldnt be anyone else now could it? Gonzales has become a real student of the Indoor game and it is showing in how dominant the Liberty are. They continue to rack up wins due to a potent offense and a calculated pitching setup. Gonzales is the brains behind it all and deserves all the awards he can get.

Draft

Trades / FA Agency

The biggest deal once more was settled by the Crush as they continue to chase the dream. This time 36 year old Mark Baxter would leave Richmond after 3 Championships, 423RBIs (inc. season best 99 last time out) and a league best 60 game hitting streak back in 2022.

Chicago pulled out all the stops, giving him 3 years @ $106,000 per and he proves another big upgrade to the Crush offence.

Dover also stepped up as they look to get over the hump, inking SS Jonathan Wansley to a 5 year deal, as he comes off the back of 50+ RBI seasons with the Blast for the past 2 seasons.

The Season that was 2027/28:

A Change Perhaps?

Well its not often a season starts like this, Iowa at 17-7 ranked as the best team in the ABL through November. Behind them Dover carried on from last year at 16-8, whilst Richmond trailed both of them with the leagues only other winning record at 13-11.

In the Stars Division, no one could win. 3 teams sat at .500 after November, whilst things looked to have finally caught up with Hartford as their 7-17 start was a new low for the DBs.

All to play for!

We all know December is the month that makes dreams come true and the dream for 7 teams still remained alive, as only the 21-32 Chicago Crush looked dead being 10 games back in the Stripes Division.

Iowa barely clung on to their division lead, just 1 game ahead of Richmond and Dover. Whilst the Stars Division held hope for all, with Buffalo the only winning record at 28-25 and the rest chasing on the back of losing numbers.

Drama till the last!

In arguably the closest and craziest finish to the ABL regular season yet, both divisions saw their races go down to the final week as many nails were bitten.

Hartford rallied from their horrendous start to edge the Stars Division once more, their 38-34 record was barely enough to edge out Buffalo, who in turn scrimped past Ottawa by a 1 game, as the Blast won 2 of 3 in Canada to clinch a place in the playoffs at their expense.

Things were even crazier in the Stripes Division. Dover again impressed and won 40+ games for the 3rd straight year. Their 43-29 record is enough to be the #1 seed in the league and setup a potential home World Series.

Behind them though is where you could barely write the script. 4 games remained, Richmond were 4 behind Iowa and would end their season at the Hog Pit for 3.

Richmond beat the Crush to get that key win and with Iowa dropping a game in Hartford, it left Richmond needing a sweep in Iowa to beat them into 2nd place on a better season H2H.

Game 1 saw the teams share 39 hits and 26 runs, as the Liberty rattled off 12 in the late innings to win 14-12. One night later and things were a bit easier, Richmond had to win and they did, 7-1 as Iowa now had to avoid defeat to prevent a dramatic collapse.

Game 3 and after a season promising so much, Iowa faltered at the death. Richmond for so long looked like missing out on the playoffs, would fight back from a 2-4 mid-inning deficit to edge the Hogs by 8-6 and set themselves off on another playoff adventure.

Miscellaneous

The incredible finish to the season contributed to the best ever attended season in league history. Every club recorded 100,000 plus attendance across the year, Montreal broke 140,000 with Dover and Buffalo just shy of that number as well.

Iowa's success proves they can draw as they put an extra 35,000 fans in seats this year, though their late collapse will be hard to take for those invested in the Hogs.

Strikeout numbers continue to drop, walks are on the increase as players are drawing on average 3 per game. This contributed to another 2 runs per game in scoring, as once men are on base, its hard to stop them coming home.

Dover would also break a pitching record this year, recording 3 shutouts as a team, as they also had 12 separate complete games.

Kevin Gomes looks locked on to win the Arena MVP award this year as he comes of age again, driving in 99 runs and falling just short of a .500 season as hitters again lead the way in the league.

Casey Gerber another Richmond face would top the strikeout charts as he resumed his role as the teams Closer, but its Dover who again looked to have found a pitching gem as the undrafted 24 year old Matt Bond impressed with a career best 3.46ERA from his 16 starts.

Another interesting stat to note was the 'Base on Ball' pair of Oscar Bragaghio and Izzy Espinosa. They accounted for 60+ walks each, coming in at almost 1 a game as the Hartford duo made the most of their patience and the pitching problems facing most clubs.

One Game Shootout:

Buffalo Blast @ Dover Dukes

If im Dover right now, im giving up! 3 years in existence, 3 straight 40 win seasons and 3 straight OGS losses. At least this year it wasnt a walkoff, yet that wont help as the Blast shelled the Dukes 15-5 in their own backyard.

Buffalo chased the Dover pitching staff all around the park as the Dukes used 6 pitchers to try and quell the Blast scoring. It failed and so once more the Dukes miss out, whilst Buffalo advance to their 2nd dance.

Richmond Liberty @ Hartford Dark Blues

The Liberty continue to make the playoffs their home, beating Hartford as the rivals faced off once more in post season play. Hartford just didnt have enough to push Richmond as a 3 run 8th inning put paid to the hosts hopes and sent the Liberty back for a chance at a 3rd straight World Series.

Buffalo Blast @ Richmond Liberty

By the 4th inning this one was done. And what way was it done? Well no prizes for your guesses as the Liberty would be celebrating their 3rd straight ABL Championship, rattling off 10 runs to chase Buffalo all the way back home.

Some new faces (or new to many) stepped up and helped bring the title back to Richmond. Lead off hitter Richie Broach had his best season for the Liberty and continued that into this series, driving in 3 runs.

Veteran outfielder Luis Montemayor (MVP) would mark his first year at Richmond (following his release from Chicago) going 4-5 at the tail end of the lineup, whilst 22 year old Javier Fraticelli started and won the game for Richmond, as he came of age after his discovery from the Dominican Republic 3 years ago.

Thats 3 on the spin and 4 total for Richmond. Can they be stopped?

TV Deal

TV has been a progressive feature of the ABL, it has an online presence via the ESPN App and even moved to a weekly airing on ESPN2 as the popularity has grown.

However financially the league and teams have still been stuck on an income that does not befit the numbers now viewing on both formats.

To that end, the ABL and ESPN have been in negotiations to lock down even better coverage and bring more money into the league. This off-season the ABL have been able to confirm the following:

ESPN have agreed a 5 year exclusivity deal that now gives them full live coverage of 1 game per night (to be aired on a channel designed appropriate).

All playoff games (including any restructure) are available on ESPN only.

The ABL will take back control of all internet streaming property and rights. Any game shown nationally on ESPN will not be available live via this function and teams are able to blackout games of their choice. ABL.tv will be a annual subscription basis either by team or full league wide coverage.

Financially the teams expect their income to double from the ESPN deal, whilst projections from ABL.tv should bring in further revenue. This will allow for further investment and the opening up of International markets as the ABL looks to attract a range of talent to its domes.

Awards

Arena MVP - Kevin Gomes (Richmond Liberty)

Gomes had to win this award as he continues to impress. He was the first hitter to breach the .500 mark a few years back and since then he has gone on to add production to his resume, driving in 99 runs this term with a .492 clip. At 25, he has plenty more years to cement his legacy in the ABL.

Arena Pitcher of the Year - Matt Bond (Dover Dukes)

Dover have a knack of picking up unwanted pitching talent and turning them into viable ABL pitchers. The league has seen a large swing towards offense, so pitchers who can keep runs off the board are a commodity. Matt Bond did his bit for Dover, posting his career best 3.46ERA this term.

Arena Skipper of the Year - Jonathan Gonzales (Richmond Liberty)

There was no doubt was there here. Gonzales has turned Richmond into a winning machine. No matter the obstacle he just gets things done, the Liberty may have missed out this year, but Gonzales got his team in the right mindset at the right time. Thats why he and the Liberty are winners.

Draft

Teams are beginning to look more towards pitchers now, with 3 going in the 2nd round. However they continue to be overlooked but as proven by Dover, there is plenty of quality out there for the right coaching. One day we will be able to report on a good quality draft class.

Trades / FA Agency

Former league MVP Josh Maniscalco ended his stint with Dover, after dropping off from his high in 2025. Buffalo managed to snag the infielder, giving the 33 year old best part of $500,000 for 5 years of service.

Alfredo Carcamo at 39 takes a final payday after leaving a 3 year spell with Dover. His 199 RBIs for the Dukes helped them make their mark since their debut, but he now moves North and will finish his ABL career in Ottawa.

Other than that, this proved to be a fairly quiet off-season. Teams look set, but with expansion in the offing, a shakeup is on the cards.

ABL Begins 2nd Expansion Phase

3 years ago the league expanded from 6 to 8 teams, now the league is becoming more ambitious and some say aggressive with their efforts to force the ABL into as many markets as possible.

The process has begun to add 4 more franchises to the league for the start of the 2030/31 season, thats just 2 years. Once again cities/states have been pitching for this in advance of the official announcement and to that end, due to the interest, the ABL has publicly made it known the 8 markets keen to join the ABL:

Hamilton (CAN)
Detroit
Cincinnati
Charleston
Baltimore
Fayetteville
Kentucky
Wyoming

More news will be revealed through the next off-season where it is likely the 4 winning franchises will be named.

The Season that was 2028/29:

Liberation of the ABL?

It has been 3 years since any other team tasted real success in the ABL as the Richmond Liberty have grabbed every opportunity they can to annex the rest of the league and celebrate year on year, success on success.

This year started in a similar vain, Richmond raced out to an 18-8 November, a comfortable lead in their division ahead of the 12-14 Chicago and Dover.

Buffalo also continued to impress, their 21-5 start is the best ever opening month in ABL history and although the Dark Blues are tucked in behind at 17-9, it will take a 'ABL December' to change things in both divisions.

One last point to note, the Maroons continue to embarrass themselves. Their 3-23 start had no place in the ABL and its a huge concern for all involved with that organisation.

Done and Dusted?

As the calendar changed over, Richmond were already confirmed as Stripes Division winners, going 42-13 into January, a whopping 17 clear of Iowa in 2nd place.

Thats right the Hogs are just about on the cusp of making the playoffs once more, but its not the most impressive season as their 25-30 record is the best of a 'ropey' rest in the division.

It was a bit closer in the Stars Division, but there is unlikely to be any change in playoff contenders. Hartford and Buffalo with 38 & 37 wins were all but there, whilst the Canadians of Ottawa (29-26) and Montreal (10-45) tailed behind.

How it ended...

Well everyone knew Richmond would do it and at 56-16 they cruised their way back to the playoffs en route to what they hoped would be a 4th straight title. They would be followed into the playoffs by Iowa, the Hogs weren't very good (35-37) but they were easily better than Chicago and Dover who just fell apart.

Ottawa would wind up with 40 wins and no playoff place in the Stars Division, something that sparked a debate considering Iowa's spot in the post-season with a worse record. But as expected Hartford and Buffalo moved on with the Dark Blues putting up 47 wins as they collect another division crown.

Miscellaneous

Back up to 10 runs per game again as Hartford, Buffalo and Richmond all scored over 800 in a season that also saw 4 Home runs, a league high.

Once again just one team missed out on the six figure attendance mark, this time Montreal saw over 43,000 fans disappear from their balance sheet, its an unhealthy situation in the new market.
