If you have a subscription to “The Athletic” they have a nice piece on Skubal for your reading enjoyment. It is a backstory about his journey culminating with how he has rocketed up the prospect boards going into this season.

Yeah the commentators were saying it's pretty much how they'd expect them to line up on Opening Day.

Freaky, freaky. In an online league I'm in Brooklyn (my team) played the Cards in one game we both scored 8 in the 8th, then a 3 game series I won two games 8-2 and St Louis won 8-2 then in this game Detroit tie 8-8 freaky

I have always wanted to start a thread for suggested reading. I think I'll try it here first and if it has some interest I will go ahead and do it on a bigger scale. Anyway, I love reading about baseball and would like to share some of the cool stuff I have come across. Here are just a few. Please share some of your favorites if you like.
Terror in the City of Champions: Murder, Baseball, and the Secret Society that Shocked Depression-era Detroit by Tom Stanton This was a fun read. 1935 was the first year the Tigers won the World Series. Also, in '35 the Lions won the NFL Championship and the Red Wings would win the Stanley Cup for the 35-36 season. A pretty remarkable year for the professional teams. However, there were some dark dealings in the city during this time as well. If you like a bit of history mixed in with your sports read this would be a good one to read. Baseball Fever: Early Baseball in Michigan by Peter Morris This is a straight historical read about baseball in the state. Peter Morris does a fantastic job of gathering evidence to give the reader a sense of what life was like in a state that grew into its early identity as baseball carved out its own spot into American society as well. Turkey Stearnes and the Detroit Stars: The Negro Leagues in Detroit, 1919-1933 by Richard Bak Detroit has a rich Negro League Baseball story with Turkey Stearns playing a major role in all of it. I am one of those that believe that Norman "Turkey" Stearns belongs in the Hall of Fame and this book was one of the key reasons for my thought process. A good read. I have many others I can share but I thought I would start with these three as this is a Tigers centered thread. If there is interest I would gladly share more. |

When Jordan Zimmerman signed that massive contract we was lights out for the month of April. He got hurt and was never the same guy again. Poor guy just doesn’t have it anymore. It is really hard to watch him pitch nowadays.

Chris Ilitch was/is on during the game against Toronto, just wondering how Detroit fans look on the ownership.

I’m not a fan. My reasoning is that I can’t separate myself from the fact that the whole family has done more to increase urban blight than correct it in Detroit. They strong armed the city into funding the LCA. I think I found somewhere that they didn’t pay the water bill at Comerica for like a decade. So on and so on. I’m sure their tactics are considered good business but from a social perspective they are criminals. I also think that my opinion will find me in the small minority as the whole Illitch empire seems to be revered her in Michigan.

I'm indifferent as long as the Tigers (and Red Wings which they also own) don't languish in perpetual rebuild mode. If they actually work at bringing championships then I'm fine with them.

Well the worlds gone crazy, people stockpiling toilet paper I mean why? Please tell me why? So I'm going to join the craziness, In the evening of the 28th I'm going to sit on my favourite chair in my man cave and put my Detroit Tigers road cap on, I'm also going to partake in my homebrew cold Cider and hotdogs with a side bowl of chilli, I will then watch the Detroit Tigers take on the Toronto Blue Jays, I will then proceed to watch every game the Tigers played in 2019 on the same date in 2020, the virus may have killed Opening Day 2020 but it will NOT kill my baseball season.
And what's more I may well bloody write about it, so please no spoilers |
