"Hold runners", the rating

What does it do exactly

-Runners less successful while high rated pitcher on the mound

-Using hold runner button hurts pitching performance less

-Using hold runner button helps holding runners more

-Any effect on pickoff attempts?

From the manual-Runners are less likely to steal and runners are more likely to get thrown out(in conjunction with catchers arm rating).

Not sure about the answers to your other questions since the manual does not say but I would guess it would slightly lower pitchers effectiveness as far as getting the batter out. Just like real life.

i think of it as pitching out of the stretch or not... in addition to the obvious intended effects on the runner, i think it reduces pitcher ability a bit, relative to that rating's value of course.

ie in real life some pitchers aren't as good out of the stretch as others. in many cases they can lose a bit of velocity, so it's not just mythical in nature.

effect on runners? it holds them closer, reduces attempts... smaller sample -> volatility increased for certain... tough to tell by the eye. i swear bumping my coach's hold runner was a net positive, but my catcher's CS% has dipped, lol.... could be totally fooled by randomness, admittedly and likely so... i am not saying anything with certainty on that second part.

maybe they only stole in less important times and avoided it when the AI held runner etc... only, or more often than a lower hold runner strat + player rating for it, stole in extremely favorable conditions (ie not expecting it and little benefit -- down by 10 and 2 outs in nineth, type crap).

Was asking about the rating more than the command. I know the command hurts performance against the batter in favor of going against the baserunner(s), I was just wondering about the effect of the rating, if it needed the command to do anything or not.

Well, if you (or the AI) do not tell the pitcher to hold the runner, then the rating will not have any effect that I know of.

Hold Runners is a measure of a pitcher's ability to hold runners on base. It is harder for runners on base to steal against pitchers who have high Hold Runners ratings. A combination of a pitcher with a good Hold Runners rating and a catcher with a good arm can significantly reduce the chances of opponents attempting stolen bases.
