Results: My little tournament of seasons

Here's what I did in what set of historical sims experiments (the main one I've done so far really)...

I recorded all the teams since 1942 that won 96 or more games in a single season (or slightly less than that for the 154 game schedules (approx. .595+ win pct.)...there were about 29 x 10.5 (240ish) such teams. Anyway, I played out 21 or 22 or seasons? (maybe 25 but not less than 21?)...and recorded the World Series from each league.

This left me with some of the very best teams in baseball since 1942. I believe 4 early 1970s Reds teams all won their league.

Anyway I took those 22-25 or 29? teams that were "left" and put them in a single league of champions of champions...

I do not remember all the details but I do know this:

The four final teams (league championship contestants) were the 2012 or 2009 New York Yankees, 1988 New York Mets, one of the Big Red Machine teams from the early '70s and one of the San Francisco Giants teams from the early '90s.

And I do know the 2012 or 2009 New York Yankees defeated the 1988 New York Mets in the World Series.

Some other teams I remember doing well in this simulations were the early 1970s Pirates, early '70s A's, late 60s/early70s Orioles, some of the '50s Dodgers and Yankees teams although all of the teams pre-1970 were generally outplayed by the teams 1980-present...

That's about it for now. If you had any ?s, I might recall a few other things about the simulated seasons to declare a best dang team since 1942 using OOTP 18.

Cream

Alright, I pulled up the sim that I called Cream, which consisted of the 29 teams (3 divisions x 7 teams, + an 8-team division) that won or made the World Series in a series of seasons consisting of all those teams listed 2 post prior to this one.

I'll go over it a bit now.

Division A: The 1988 NY Mets beat out the 1972 Pitt Pirates and 1970 Baltimore Orioles by a pretty healthy margin.

Division Spectacular: In this one the 2002 SF Giants, 1993 SF Giants, 1976 Reds & 1973 Reds finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th respectively. The gap from 1st to 4th is 9 games.

Division C: One of the four Big Red Machine teams had to represent, right? They fittingly win Division 'C' by 10 games over the 2009 New York Yankees.

Division 8: Where did these names come from? Everything was so random, I guess I figured the names should be to a degree too. Anyway the Killer Bs win (1998 Houston Astros) by 13 games over the 1999 Atlanta Braves. [Oh, this was the one division with 8 teams in it.]

Curt Flood takes the batting championship. (.369)
George Foster leads them all in homers. (38) And RBI (156).
Joe Morgan & Willie Wilson steals 71 bases apiece.
Tony Perez goes on a 32-game hitting streak.
Gerrit Cole, Roy Halladay & Kevin Brown all hold ERAs under 2.50 despite the stiff competition.
CC Sabathia wins 25 games.
Randy Johnson strikes out 278 batters.

For whatever reson, my personal preference to decide this creation I suppose, all the series in the playoffs are first team to win 5 games or Best of 9 affairs.

How that set up:
1993 San Francisco Giants (1) vs. 1975 Cincinnati Reds (5)
2009 New York Yankees (5) vs. 2002 San Francisco Giants (1)

1999 Atlanta Braves (4) vs. 1988 New York Mets (5)
1972 Pittsburgh Pirates (5) vs. 1998 Houston Astros (3)

The 1999 Braves vs. 1988 New York Mets series is very close, with Atlanta winning 4 of the first 6. But the Mets win the last 3. I saw this in another sim where a team actually defeated the 1900s Chicago Cubs in the first four games only to be beaten in the next 5 games in a row. Talk about a comeback...& a kind of interesting note on the length of series...Both those are over if they are best of 7s, nevermind 5 or 1.

In the other three first round series, there seemed to be a clear "better team".

The first round results left:

1975 Cincinnati Reds (1) vs. 2009 New York Yankees (5) Series MVP: Nick Swisher

1988 New Yorks Mets (5) vs. 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates (4) Series MVP: CF Al Oliver of the Pirates despite the loss.

Which set up the fantasy MLB 1942-2016 World Series featuring the 2009 New York Yankees vs. the 1988 New York Mets.

Game 1: Yanks 2, Mets 0 F
Game 2: Yanks 6, Mets 0 F
Game 3: Mets 19, Yanks 1 F
Game 4: Yanks 5, Mets 4 F
Game 5: Mets 5, Yanks 2 F
Game 6: Yanks 1, Mets 0 F
Game 7: Yanks 5, Mets 4 F

Your Series MVP: Joba Chamberlain 18 innings of scoreless ball; a 2-start, 2 shutout performance! (Is he my profile picture right now? I don't even know.)

That's all, Folks!
