April 14th, Phoenix Suns (7-5) @ L.A. Blue Sox (6-8) Attendance: 30,551

Line-ups;

Blue Sox: A.Williams CF, R.Henry 2B, D,Hunt 3B, J.Goslin LF, M.Seuffert 1B, S.Fuentes RF, T.Ingersoll SS, B.Diaz C, A.Jaquez P.

Suns: J.Moore SS, Craigo RF, Mendez 1B, Hansen 3B, McClary LF, Bowman CF, R.Moore 2B, Sanchez C, Flores P.

Plain sailing for Flores and the Suns. We got on the board in the 2nd thanks to RBI singles from R.Moore and Sanchez, driving in McClary and Bowman respectively. Then both pitchers whilst giving up some hits and walks were able to hold the offense of each team in check. The only moment of danger for Flores was in the 7th, when with 0 outs the Blue Sox had the bases loaded but Flores was able to get 3 outs without giving up a run. Top of the 8th and Hansen made it a 3-0 game with his 2nd of the year. Velthouse and Riley then shut down the Blue Sox.

Phoenix Suns 3-0 L.A. Blue Sox

Home Runs:
Suns: Hansen (2)
Blue Sox: -
WP: J.Flores 2-1 (6.60)
LP: A.Jaquez 1-2 (5.40)
SV: Riley 4 (1.29)
POTG: J.Flores

April 15th, Phoenix Suns (8-5) @ L.A. Blue Sox (6-9) Attendance: 31,530

Blue Sox: A.Williams CF, M.Vallery 2B, S.Fuentes RF, J.Goslin LF, M.Seuffert 1B, B.Diaz C, T.Ingersoll SS, T.Johnson 3B, N.Monzon P.

Suns: J.Moore SS, Craigo RF, Mendez 1B, Hansen 3B, J.Gonzalez C, Schirm LF, Bowman CF, R.Moore 2B, Benayoun P.

This was a pitcher's duel, both starters looked sharp. Then in the 5th inning with 2 outs, Vallery who was struggling at the plate with a .100 AVG takes Benayoun deep and gives the Blue Sox a 1-0 lead. The score remains that way until Seuffert rips a double to right field and Goslin scurries home from 2nd, 2-0 Blue Sox. In the top of the 9th we pull a run back thanks to a J.Gonzalez single which drives in Craigo, but we couldn't get the tying run across the plate.

Phoenix Suns 1-2 L.A. Blue Sox

Home Runs:
Blue Sox: Vallery (1)
Suns: -
WP: Monzon 3-1 (2.97)
LP: Benayoun 1-1 (2.01)

April 17th, Phoenix Suns (8-6) @ Chicago Colonels (12-4) Attendance: 40,946

Line-ups;

Suns: J.Moore SS, Craigo RF, Mendez 1B, Hansen 3B, McClary LF, Bowman CF, R.Moore 2B, Sanchez C, Doull P.

Colonels: M.Bautista 1B, T.Rawlins 3B, L.Maldonado CF, B.Garcia LF, J.Trant RF, G.Duford C, P.Anthony SS, C.Magne 2B, E.Villicana P.

This was a tight one and scoreless until the 5th when Bowman hit his 2nd home run of the year, then in the 7th with 2 on, Sanchez hit a line drive single and enabled Hansen to cross the plate 2-0 Suns. In the 8th we load the bases and McClary hits a sac fly enabling Craigo to cross the plate, the next hitter Bowman hits a single to make it 4-0 Suns. That's how it stayed as Riley managed to pick up from where Doull left off and shut down the Colonels.

Phoenix Suns 4-0 Chicago Colonels.

Home Runs:
Suns: Bowman (2)
Colonels: -

WP: Doull 2-1 (2.14)
LP: Villicana 3-1 (1.74)
POTG: Doull

April 18th, Phoenix Suns (9-6) @ Chicago Colonels (12-5) Attendance: 40,860

Line-ups;

Suns: J.Moore SS, Craigo RF, Mendez 1B, Hansen 3B, McClary LF, Bowman CF, R.Moore 2B, J.Gonzalez C, Anderson P.

Colonels: M.Bautista 1B, T.Eawlings 3B, L.Maldonado CF, B.Garcia LF, J.Tant RF, G.Dunford C, S.Wiseman 2B, C.Magne SS, M.Abril P.

With Anderson on the mound we were hoping he could build on his last start, which was a vast improvement on his first start. In the bottom of the first M.Bautista got himself a double, Anderson managed to get the next 2 hitters out, but Bobby Garcia doubled of a 1-2 pitch to score Bautista. It remained that way until the 4th when the Colonels struck again, with 2 outs G.Duford it a double, if it was a few feet higher it would've left the park. Next batter up S.Wiseman hit a single and Duford made is way home. In the 6th Duford this time drove in a run to make it 3-0. No matter how hard we tried we just couldn't find a way to put a string of hits together to put pressure on M.Abril

Phoenix Suns 0 - 3 Chicago Colonels

Home Runs: -
WP: M.Abril 2-1 (4.00)
LP: Anderson 0-3 (5.24)
SV: F.Rodriguez 8 (.082)

April 19th, Phoenix Suns (9-7) @ Chicago Colonels (13-5)

Line-ups;

Colonels: M.Bautista 1B, T.Rawlins 3B, L.Maldonado, B.Garcia LF, J.Tant RF, C.Magne 2B, P.Anthony SS, V.Mendoza C, T.Bailey P.

The Colonels got off to a quick start with 2 runs in the first, we hit back in the 2nd with a 3 run rally to take the lead. In the 4th J.Tant went deep for the 3rd time this year and another run followed soon after to put the Colonels 4-3 ahead. We made it a square in the 6th but it the bottom of the inning B.Garcia went deep for the 6th time this year, then in the 7th Maldonado went deep for the 5th time of the year and that ended the scoring as we couldn't force home any runs off of the miserly Colonels' bullpen.

Phoenix Suns 4 - 6 Chicago Colonels.

Home Runs:
Suns: -
Colonels: Tant 3, Garcia 6, Maldonado 5.
WP: M.Gabel 4-0 (3.86)
LP: Thomas 3-1 (2.42)
SV: F.Rodriguez 9
POTG: L.Maldonado

We have an off day on the 20th then we hit the I-94 for a 90 mile northern jaunt, for a 3 game series vs the Milwaukee Hops (8-11).

April 21st, Phoenix Suns (9-8) @ Milwaukee Hops (8-11) Attendance: 19,594

Line-ups;
Suns: J.Moore SS, Craigo RF, Mendez 1B, McClary LF, D.Sanchez C, Bowman CF, Sambrano 3B, R.Moore 2B, Flores P.

Hops: E.Gomez CF, J.Harper SS, R.Aguirre 3B, B.Greenfield 1B, B.Ireland RF, R.Bonilla LF, R.Davila C, J.Martinez 2B, L.Blais P.

The start to this game was great for the Suns, not so good for the Hops. McClary got the ball rolling with a 2 run bomb in the first, Sambrano (in a rare start) hit a single that scored Sanchez and Bowman, then R.Moore hit a single and Sambrano rounded the bases to come home and make it 5-0. First hitter up for the Hops was Enrique Gomez and he hit the ball 417ft to make it 5-1. In the bottom of the second, Roberto Davila hit a 2 run homer to make it 5-3. Top of the 5th and Sambrano making the most of his time in the line-up, hit a double and allowed Dave Sanchez to cross home plate to make it 6-3 Suns. The Hops pulled that run back in the bottom half as a John Harper single brought home Jose Martinez 6-4. In the bottom of the 7th, Tyler Miller slammed a 400ft bomb to make it a 1 run game. Our hitters decided it was getting too close so in the 8th, Craigo brought home R.Moore and then the next hitter Vic Mendez hit a bases clearing triple to bring in 2 more runs. Dave Sanchez then singled which allowed Mendez to score.

Phoenix Suns 10 - 5 Milwaukee Hops.

Home Runs:
Suns: McClary 3.
Hops: E.Gomez 3, R.Davila 1, T.Miller 2.
WP: J.Flores 3-1 (6.75)
LP: L.Blais 0-4 (5.34)
POTG: R.Moore

April 22nd, Phoenix Suns (10-8) @ Milwaukee Hops (8-12) Attendance: 20,645

Line-ups:
Suns: J.Moore SS, McClary LF, Mendez 1B, Hansen 3B, Bowman CF, J.Gonzalez C, R.Moore 2B, Craigo RF, Benayoun P.

Hops: E,Gomez CF, J.Harper SS, R.Aguirre 3B, B.Greenfield 1B, T.Miller LF, R.Bonilla RF, J.Martinez 2B, R.Davila C, J.Lopez P.

Today wasn't a free scoring game like yesterday's meeting. It was a pitching duel, but Benayoun had to leave after 4 and 1/3 innings hopefully it won't be a serious injury. The games first run came from the bat of J.Gonzalez who swatted the ball deep and far for his 3rd home run of the year. It stayed 1-0 until the 8th when McClary got a timely hit and plated 2 more runs for the Suns. Velthouse then carried on the great work started by Benayoun and Garcia and Riley completed the job in the 9th.

Phoenix Suns 3-0 Milwaukee Hops

Home Runs:
Suns: J.Gonzalez 3
Hops: -
WP: M.Garcia 1-0 (2.08)
LP: J.Lopez 1-2 (2.90)
SV: Riley 5 (1.00)
POTG: J.Lopez

Hops: E.Gomez CF, J.Harper SS, R.Aguirre 3B, B.Greenfield 1B, B.Ireland RF, T.Miller LF, J.Martinez 2B, A.Rutschman C, J.Huster P.

The Suns were unable to complete the sweep Vs the Hops. The Hops took full advantage when they had runners on base and some timely hitting and home runs aided their cause. It was scoreless until the 3rd when we scored 4, the Hops replied with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning with R.Aguirre hitting a 3 run bomb for his 4th of the year. The key moment of the game was in the bottom of the 5th and the Hops just pounded Doull for the tune of 5 runs, T.Miller hit another 3 run Homer and 2 more runs crossed the plate to give the Hops a an 8-4 lead, we managed to pull a run back in the 7th but the Hops bullpen held it together to wrap up the win.

WP: J.Huster 5-0 (2.37)

4/22 28 year-old RHP Edwin Jasso of the Atlanta Indians hurled a no-hitter against the Denver Rockies. Jasso struckout 6 and walked 0 and only a hit batter in the 6th prevented a perfect game. 120th no-hitter in league history(First no-hitter in 8 days).

April 24th, Chicago Colonels (15-7) @ Phoenix Suns (11-9) Attendance: 34,536

Line-ups;

Colonels: M.Bautista 1B, T.Rawlins 3B, L.Maldonado CF, B.Garcia LF, G.Duford C, E.Franco RF, P.Anthony SS, C.Magne 2B, T.Bailey P.
Suns: J.Moore SS, R.Moore 2B, Mendez 1B, Hnasen 3B, Bowman CF, Schirm LF, J.Gonzalez C, Craigo RF, Anderson P.

Bobby Anderson pitched today how we hoped he'd pitch when we traded for him. He recorded his first win for the Suns and his first quality start. Once again timely hitting for the Suns kept the scoreboard ticking over for us, a 3 run spot in the 2nd, followed by 2 in the 3rd and then a runs in the 4th and 5th meant we were able to keep the Colonels behind the 8 ball. B.Garcia went deep again for his 7th of the year and he seems to have taken a liking to Suns pitching when it comes to the longball.

Chicago Colonels 3 - 7 Phoenix Suns

Home Runs:
Colonels: B.Garcia 7
Suns: -
WP: Anderson 1-3 (4.91)
LP: T.Bailey 1-2 (4.13)
POTG: Anderson

In the 5th R.Moore continued his great form at the plate by driving in another run, 4-1 Suns. Then in the 6th Hansen hit a 3 run bomb to make it 7-1 to the Suns.

WP: Thomas 4-1 (2.20)
LP: V.Cuellar 0-1 (9.00)

Suns: J.Moore SS, Craigo RF, Mendez 1B, McClart LF, D.Sanchez C, Bowman CF, Sambrano 3B, R.Moore 2B, Flores P.

Another strong start from Flores, 6 innings 1 ER, and a shutout 3 innings from the bullpen enabled the Suns to take the game and a sweep of the Colonels. Dave Sanchez got the ball rolling in the 1st with an RBI single, Bowman extended the lead in the 4th with his 3rd home run of the year. The Colonels pulled a run back in the 5th, thanks to a M.Bautista single, we then restored the 2 run cushion after a Craigo triple scored J.Moore.

April Review

It's been a good month as Phoenix Suns GM. We've started out 15-11 and haven't really been outplayed by any other team. Yes we've had some luck along the way but everyone needs some luck along the way.

In terms of batting average we're doing as expected, when constructing the roster in the expansion draft we went for guys with good contact and all the hitting coaches in the Suns system are that way inclined. I'm not surprised that we're second from bottom in how many home runs we've hit, we probably only have two guys who hit for power, Mendez and Hansen and at the moment Hansen is having some issues in hitting Major League pitching(also upsetting teammates too). We're not striking out a lot either which is also pleasing, but we could do with drawing some more walks.

On the plus side for pitching, we're actually doing ok!! Whilst our starter's ERA is only 9th best it was 2nd until the injuries of Benayoun and Doull and whilst we have 5 alright starters, our depth is probably not the best. We have a some decent looking arms, but they're in A+ ball at best. Whilst our pitchers aren't striking out a lot of guys we're not giving up that many hits and we've given up the fewest runs, which goes back to another thing we took into consideration when we drafted, good defense.

All in all a decent first month of the season for the Suns.

Down on the farm:

AAA Reno Silver Sox (12-9, 1st in Division)
3B Raul Molina is hitting 482/532/753 and surely it's only a matter of time before he makes his way to Phoenix.

April 30th, Phoenix Suns (15-10) @ Pittsburgh Pioneers (13-14) Attendance: 25,837

Line-ups;

Suns: J.Moore SS, McClary LF, Mendez 1B, Hansen 3B, Bowman CF, J.Gonzalez C, R.Moore 2B, Craigo RF, Anderson P.
Pioneers: K.Hughes RF, L.Sanchez 2B, J.Cantu LF, A.Canales 1B, P.Rhinehart SS, A.lease CF, M.Rodriguez 3B, M.Pavon C, B.Cascio P.

Bottom of the 1st, 2 outs and the count is 1-2 Anderson throws a circle change and J.Cantu says "thank you" as he sends it way, way over the left field wall. 1-0 Pioneers. It stays this way until the 8th inning, then Anderson helps his own cause as he hits a double to right field, J.Moore moves him over to 3rd then McClary hits a sac fly to tie it up. But as soon as the sports God's giveth they taketh away, as Anderson gives up a 2 run homer to K.Hughes.

Phoenix Suns 1 - 3 Pittsburgh Pioneers

Home Runs;
Suns: -
Pioneers: Cantu (3), Hughes (3)
WP: B.Cascio 4-2 (2.92)
LP: Anderson 1-4 (4.58)

May 1st, Phoenix Suns (15-11) @ Pittsburgh Pioneers (14-14) Attendance: 32,988

Line-ups;

Suns: J.Moore SS, McClary LF, Mendez 1B, Hansen 3B, Bowman CF, J.Gonzalez C, R.Moore 2B, Craigo RF, Thomas P.
Pioneers: K.Hughes RF, L.Sanchez 2B, A.Canales 1B, A.Lease CF, P.Rhinehart SS, E.Miller LF, M.Rodriguez 3B, M.Pavon C, E.Hill P.

The Pioneers got the ball rolling in the 3rd when a A.Canales double scored K.Hughes it stayed like that until the 6th when Canales hit his 4th home run of the year. We finally got on the board in the 7th to make it all square. In the top of the 9th J.Moore got a much needed hit that allowed Gonzalez to cross the plate, 3-2 Suns. Riley then came on and closed out the game.

Phoenix Suns 3 - 2 Pittsburgh Pioneers.

Home runs:
Suns: -
Pioneers: Canales (4)
WP: Garza 1-0 (0.71)
LP: D.Gomez 0-2 (2.92)

Pioneers: K.Hughes LF, P.Rhinehart SS, A.Canales 1B, L.Sanchez 2B, A.Lease CF, E.Torres RF, M.Rodriguez 3B, M.Pavon C, D.Campos P.

This was another tight one for the Suns and a really good pitching match up between Flores and Campos. The only runs of the game came from the bat of Mendez in the 3rd inning as he sent the ball into the left field seats to give the Suns a 2-0 lead. That's how it stayed both teams had chances to add to the score but neither were able to get the "timely" hit.

May 4th, Phoenix Suns (17-11) @ Atlanta Indians (9-20) Attendance: 20,729

Line-ups;

The scoring started in the 2nd when Kevin Bright did what he does, hit the ball park for 11th of the year. In the 3rd the Indians added another run to the board and in the 5th they made it a 3 run game. We had a rally in the 7th and thanks to some hits and an error by the Indians infield we managed to pull back 2 runs, but the Indians bullpen held it's nerve and managed to close out the game.

A tough loss for the Suns, after 16 hard innings. The Indians got on the board in the 1st with a Giesteira RBI, then the starters got down to some hard work. We managed to level the game up in the 7th when Dave Sanchez picked up a timely hit with a RISP. In the 8th with 2 on and 2 out, Bowman ripped a single and J.Moore sprinted around 3rd, but a cannon of a throw from Giesteira got to home before J.Moore. There were chances for both teams to rap the game up and finally the Indians did the 16th, Picard hit a triple and 2 batters later, Burkett drove in the winning run.

After a long game the day before, we got what was needed a long outing from Bobby Anderson. We got on the board in the 4th and added 2 further runs in the 7th. In the 9th Riley came in with a 3 run lead and almost managed to record his first blown save with the help of some woeful defense. We got on the board in the 2nd with a Bill Hansen home run, the next hitter Bowman got on base with a single, next hitter moved Bowman over then Craigo hit into a fielder's choice and that enabled Bowman to score, 2-0 Suns. Bottom of the 3rd and the Whales get on the board. F.Hernandez got on base due to an error, he then stole 3rd and was driven in by C.Hernandez. In the 5th McClary drove in another run to make it 3-1 Suns. It stayed that way until the bottom of the 9th when the Whales managed to pull back a run, but like yesterday Riley was able to keep the wheels on.

The Whales got on the board 1st, F.Hernandez was brought home by E.Rivera. We hit back in the 2nd when Craigo hit a single and an error by the Whales allowed Bowman to score. We then added 3 runs in the 3rd, although we're still lacking that big hit. The Whales pulled back a run in the 5th and it stayed that way until the bottom of the 9th, where it was another nervy time if you were rooting for the Suns, as B.Heinzelan hit a 2 run home run to make it a 1 run game but we held our nerve to take the win.

May 11th, Philadelphia Keystones (18-17, 2nd NL East 7GB) @ Phoenix Suns (22-13, 1st NL West) Attendance: 28,135

Line-ups;

Keystones: P.Miller CF, A.Avila RF, M.Donnellan LF, S.Ellis 3B, T.Harvey 1B, B.Angus SS, T.Tellez 2B, S.Burski C, G.Mendez P.
Suns: J.Moore SS, R.Moore 2B, Mendez 1B, Hansen 3B, Bowman CF, Schirm LF, D.Sanchez C, Craigo RF, Anderson P.

This was the Mendez and Anderson show. Bottom of the 4th and Mendez hits the Suns to a 1-0 lead with his 8th of the year. Then in the 6th with both the Moore's on, Mendez rips a single down the right field line and J.Moore comes across to score, Bowman then singles and R.Moore comes across to score. 3-0 Suns. In the 8th a Hansen double allows Mendez to come home. On the mound Anderson looked really, really good. He held the Keystones to 4 hits and 2 walks whilst striking out 10.

Philadelphia Keystones 0 - 4 Phoenix Suns

Home runs:
Keystones: -
Suns: Mendez (8)
WP: Anderson 3-4 (3.15)
LP: G.Mendez 1-4 (4.08)

May 12th, Philadelphia Keystones (18-18,2nd NL East 7GB) @ Phoenix Suns (23-13, 1st NL West) Attendance: 23,294

Line-ups;

Keystones: P.Miller CF, A.Avila RF, A.Brown LF, T.Harvey 1B, J.Lopez C, J.Deptula 3B, B.Angus SS, L.Menzer 2B, J.Hernandez P.
Suns: J.Moore SS, Bowman CF, Mendez 1B, Hansen 3B, Serrano RF, R.Moore 2B, J.Gonzalez C, Craigo LF, Thomas P.

After blanking the Keystones yesterday, today was our turn to be shutout. J.Hernandez made our hitters look like bad. He give up 2 hits, 4 walks and struck out 5. J.Deptula got the scoring started in the 2nd, when he muscled a ball to the deepest part of the ballpark to get his 2nd home run of the year. The Keystones then added 2 more runs in the 6th, with T.Harvey hitting his 5th home run of the year and to end it in the 9th A.Brown with 2 men on hit his 9th homer of the season.

Philadelphia Keystones 7 - 0 Phoenix Suns

Home Runs;
Keystones: Deptula (2), Harvey (5), Brown (9)
Suns: -
WP: Hernandez 3-2 (3.21)
LP: Thomas 5-2 (2.18)

May 13th, Philadelphia Keystones (19-18, 2nd NL East 6GB) @ Phoenix Suns (23-14, 1st NL West) Attendance: 27,463

Line-ups;
Keystones: P.Miller CF, A.Avila RF, S.Ellis 3B, A.Brown LF, T.Harvey 1B, B.Angus SS, L.Menzer 2B, S.Burski C, V.Aguilar P.
Suns: J.Moore SS, McClary LF, Mendez 1B, Hansen 3B, Serrano RF, Bowman CF, R.Moore 2B, D.Sanchez C, Flores P.

A tight game and once again our lack of "clutch hitting" comes back to haunt us. In the 7th we have the bases loaded with 1 out, McClary who's been struggling at the plate of late can only pop the ball up to LF and it's not deep enough to score R.Moore. Next hitter up is Mendez he draws a walk and the Suns have a 1 run lead and then Hansen fly's out to RF, inning over and bases left loaded. In the 8th and Velthouse has a nightmare he walks 3 hitters, gives up 2 runs and the Keystones take a 2-1 lead and that's how it stays.

Philadelphia Keystones 2 - 1 Phoenix Suns

Home Runs;
Keystones: -
Suns: -
WP: V.Aguilar 2-5 (4.82)
LP: Velthouse 0-1 (6.00)
SV J.Kelley 1 (2.45)
POTG: Flores

May 14th, Philadelphia Keystones (20-18, 2nd NL East 6GB) @ Phoenix Suns (23-15, 1st NL West) Attendance: 26,833

Line-ups;

Keystones: P.Miller CF, A.Avila RF, A.Brown LF, S.Ellis 3B, T.Harvey 1B, B.Angus SS, J.Lopez C, L.Menzer 2B, A.Bautista P.
Suns: J.Moore SS, McClary LF, Mendez 1B, Serrano RF, J.Gonzalez C, Bowman CF, R.Moore 2B, Sambrano 3B, Garcia P.

Example #239 of our lack of clutch innings, leaving RISP and giving hope to the fans by having a late rally but just falling short. The Keystones scored 1 run in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th. In the bottom of the 7th we pulled 3 back but once again fell short.

Philadelphia Keystones 4 - 3 Phoenix Suns.

Home Runs;
Keystones: -
Suns: -
WP: A.Bautista 3-0 (3.12)
LP: Garcia 2-2 (4.38)
SV: J.Kelley 2 (2.25)
POTG: Bautista

Next up we welcome the NL East leading Montreal Canadiens (28-13) for a 3 game set.

Projected Starters:

RHP N.Balboa 0-0 (1.38) vs LHP M.Weber 2-3 (3.45)
RHP B.Anderson 3-4 (3.15) vs RHP A.Shipman 1-2 (2.92)
RHP J.Thomas 5-2 (2.18) vs R.Rodriguez 2-2 (3.66)

Phoenix Suns:

5/11 34 year-old RHP Bobby Anderson blanked the Keystones, he gave up 4 hits and struck out 10.

Roster moves:
5/11 25 year old OF/1B Ray Schirm has been optioned to AAA Reno. Schirm got off to a hot start albeit in a part-time role, his bat has now cooled down and he's having issues putting the ball in play. We hope he can figure it out whilst he's in the minors and getting more regular ABs. 23 year-old Victor Serrano has his contract purchased, he's expected to arrive in Arizona in time for tomorrow's game.

Contracts:
5/12 36 year old RHP Brian Hurt signs a minor league contract. He spent last season in Japan, in the MLB he's 138-133 (14 saves) with a 4.16 era, he's not a high K/9 guy but he doesn't walk many. Signed for depth as our starting pitching depth is stretched as it is.

Under the knife:
5/12 21 year-old RHP Manuel Santiago has suffered a partially torn UCL and is expected to miss 9-10 months. He'd been at A Aurora and had a 3.82 era(2.13 FIP) in 37.2 innings with a 11.2 K/9

Around the league:

Accomplishments:
5/12 30 year old RHP Jorge Hernandez shutout the Phoenix Suns. He surrendered 2 hits and 4 walks and recorded 5 strikeouts.
5/13 28 year-old RHP Kevin Mortimer(Kansas City Huskers) blanked the Tampa Pirates. He give up 5 hits and 4 walks, striking out 6 as the Huskers run out 6-0 winners.

It started well for the Suns, McClary busted out of the slump he's been in with a monster home run, after Mendez hit a sac fly to get Bowman in for the first run of the game. Sadly for us the Canadiens hit back in the 2nd as they posted 3 runs on 3 hits, they then added 2 more runs in the 4th. We pulled a run back in the 4th and in the 6th Hansen hit a solo shot to make it 5-4. In the 9th D.Steward, who'd been a thorn in our side all day drove in his 3rd run of the game to put the Canadiens 2 runs up. Then called upon the #1 rated prospect in baseball to nail down the win. Balboa had to leave the game in the 3rd, hopefully it won't be a major injury.

Home Runs:

LP: Balboa 0-1(2.87)

Canadiens: C.Campbell CF, D.Steward 2B, F.Dicks LF, M.Ciaglia RF, J.Swanson SS, E.Diaz C, T.Farias 3B, A.Basora 1B, A.Shipman P
Suns: J.Moore SS, McClary LF, Mendez 1B, Hansen 3B, Serrano RF, Bowman CF, J.Gonzalez C, R.Moore 2B, Anderson P.

We scored in the first thanks to a Serrano single which allowed McClary to cross home. In the 4th F.Dicks hit a triple and the next hitter M.Ciaglia hit a single and the Canadiens tied it up at 1. We got that run back straight away when Bowman went deep. J.Gonzalez extended the lead in the 7th with a solo shot, 3-1 Suns. Then the 9th inning meltdown that Riley had been hinting at finally happened, he walked the first batter then committed an error that should've been a double play and the Canadiens made us pay by tying the game at 3. Then with some small ball in the 10th the Canadiens took the lead and closed out the game.

Suns: J.Moore SS, McClary LF, Mendez 1B, Hansen 3B, R.Moore 2B, Bowman CF, Craigo RF, D.Sanchez C, Thomas P.

YAY!!!! We remembered how to win and did so in a convincing manner. Thomas was excellent on the mound he limited the Canadiens to 5 hits and 3 walks over his 9 innings of work and he got 6 strikeouts too. On the offense side of the game we scored often and frequently, D.Sanchez got the ball rolling when he hit an RBI double in the 2nd and Bowman used his speed to get from 1st to home. In the 3rd McClary got on with a single then Mendez smashed another home run, 3-0 Suns. We added to more runs in the 5th with RBI hits from Craigo and Thomas. In the 7th thanks to 2 errors we added another run when Bowman took advantage of the Canadiens generosity and finally in the 8th Hansen hit a 2 run bomb to complete the scoring.

This game went back and forth. The Colonels got on board in the first, the Suns made it 2-1 in the 2nd. The Colonels tied it up in the 3rd with a solo shot from T.Rawlins. Both teams scored a run in the 4th to make it 3-3. Top of the 6th and Serrano slices one over the left field wall and gives the Suns a 2 run lead, but in the bottom of the innings, 2 solo shots tie the game back up, Garcia and Wiseman. The scoring in this one didn't start until the 6th when Hansen powered the baseball deep to center field, 1-0 Suns. In the 7th we had a merry go round and Garcia helped his cause by hitting a RBI single, then Mendez plated Garcia. Hansen ended the inning with a fly out that was just held up by the wind. The Colonels rallied with 2 runs in the 8th to make it a 1 run game, but a passed ball in the top of the 9th allowed Craigo to give us a 2 run cushion and this time Riley managed to shut it down.

Once again another tough loss for the Suns. We opened the scoring in the 5th when McClary hit a single and Anderson chugged home from third. Bowman added another run in the 6th when his double scored Serrano, but Bowman was then thrown out trying to make the double a triple. The Rockies then tied it up in the 7th. It stayed tied at 2 until the 11th, when McClary drove in D.Sanchez to make it 3-2 Suns, in the bottom half of the inning with 1 on Armstrong served up a buffet ball to McManaman and he smashed it 433 ft and got mobbed at home plate when he got back to it.

RHP B.Hurt 1-0 (2.40) vs RHP R.Flores 6-4 (3.64)

Phoenix Suns:
5/27 In a bid to shake up the offense we make a pair of trades;
Trade 1: We send 28 year-old CF Eric Brooks to the Chicago Athletes, in return we get back 25 year-old RF Carlos Rivera. Rivera is a defensive down grade on Brooks but is a better hitter with home run threat.

Trade 2: We send 24 year-old 3B Ivan Sambrano and 21 year-old minor league RHP Jorge Salas to the Miami Whales and in return receive 25 year-old 3B Jesus Hernandez. Hernandez is a better hitter than Sambrano and a little quicker on the bases. Salas was rated as a back end starter, with room to grow a little more. We didn't want to part with him but he was required to get the deal done.

Around the League:

Accomplishments:
5/25 30 year-old 3B Kevin Bright(Atlanta Indians) hit 3 home runs Vs the Chicago Colonels.

Under the knife:

May 28th, Cincinnati Redbirds (25-27, 5th NL Central 6GB) @ Phoenix Suns (28-23, 3rd NL West 2GB) Attendance: 20,527

Line-ups;
Redbirds: J.Guerrero CF, S.Buell LF, M.Castaneda 3B, D.Moore SS, R.Gomez 1B, A.McCray RF, A.McAllister 2B, A.Sanchez C, S.Sullivan P.
Suns: J.Moore SS, J.Hernandez 3B, Mendez 1B, Bowman CF, Serrano RF, D.Sanchez C, Craigo LF, R.Moore 2B, Thomas P.

Thomas had an issue with finding the 'zone in the 1st but he limited the Redbirds to just one run. The Redbirds added another run in the 3rd, but in the bottom of the 3rd we hit back with 2 runs to tie it up. In the 4th Craigo hits into a double play but Serrano managed to score on the play. By this time Thomas had found his groove and Trant and Riley kept it locked down.

Suns: J.Moore SS, McClary LF, Serrano RF, Hansen 1B, Hernandez 3B, Bowman CF, J.Gonzalez C, R.Moore 2B, Flores P.

This turned into a bullpen game for us. Flores had to leave the game after recording 2 outs in the first, hopefully it won't be a lonh injury. Bill Hansen continued his recent hot streak as he hit a double in the 1st which allowed Serrano to come home, 1-0 Suns. It stayed that way until the 8th when the Redbirds put together some hits and J.Dunn drove in the tying run. In the bottom of the 9th with the bases loaded, Syron hurled the ball to the plate but it got by Jones and Hernandez crossed the plate for the win.

Suns: R.Moore 2B, McClary LF, Mendez 1B, Serrano RF, Bowman CF, J.Gonzalez C, J.Hernandez 3B, Center SS, Garcia P.

The Redbirds came out of the traps quickly as Garcia wasn't on his A game. Whilst Garcia wasn't firing on all cylinders he did limit the Redbirds to 4 runs in 6 innings. In the bottom of the 7th with the score 4-2, Mendez tied it up with his 10th home run of the year. Bottom of the 9th with one on Serrano hits a walk-off home run!

WP: Velthouse 1-2 (6.05)
LP: V.Rivera 2-3 (3.33)

Suns: J.Moore SS, McClary LF, Mendez 1B, Serrano RF, Bowman CF, J.Gonzalez C, Hansen 3B, R.Moore 2B, Hurt P.

The Redbirds were 2 up entering the 8th, then back to back home runs from McCray and Gomez put them 4-0 up and it looked like the game was over. But someone must have said something in the dugout as hits and walks an clutch hitting with 2 outs, produced 5 runs for the Suns. Riley then pitched a 1-2-3 9th to wrap up the game for the Suns.

May Review

A strange month. Results wise it was split into 3 stages, from the 1st until the 11th we went 8-2 which was a great start, but then in the middle of the month(12th-23rd) form went out of the window we went 2-9. Then as May was winding into June we discovered the form we started the month in and went 7-1. For the month we played 29 games, scored 108 runs and gave up 83 runs. We won 7 games by 1 run and lost 9 games by 1 run.

I'm really happy with how our pitching and defense has been performing. Aside from Strikeouts(14th in NL, but our staff is mostly guys who are ground ballers) and Home Runs given up(2nd in the NL) we're ranked #1 for everything else. But on the other side of the diamond we are really struggling and rank towards the bottom of most categories. Hopefully we can weather that storm and maybe in the hot summer days our offense will wake up and take some of the pressure off of the pitchers.

For June I'm hoping we can carry on like we've played the first 2 months of the season, winning our share of games and not getting badly beat when we don't win.

Season Hitting to date:

Season Pitching to date:

Down on the Farm:

AAA Reno Silver Sox: 32-19, 1st in the Northern Division with a 5 game lead. May Record: 20-9

The Silver Sox have been on fire in the month of May, lead by Raul Molina, Joel Loconte and Bill Foster. They've been making life hard for Pacific Conference. Jeff Walter's has been the leader of the pitching stuff in Reno and has been backed up by Robby Vaughan and Dave Ortiz amongst others. Elisha Benayoun has made a few rehab starts as he looks to work his way back to the Majors.

I'm hoping that manager Matt Skillen, who's been the Silver Sox manager since 1990, can keep the momentum going and the Silver Sox can widen the gap between themselves and the chasers.

AA Jackson Generals: 11-38, 19.5GB, 5th in the North Division (Southern League). May Record: 6-22

Whilst the Silver Sox have been preforming well our AA team have been struggling and struggling bad. The pitching is dead last in every category and hitting is pretty much dead last in all categories. It's a bit of a head scratcher really as there is some talent down in Jackson, but for whatever reason they're just not getting it done, maybe it's the rookie manager Sean Daugherty and his staff or maybe the talent isn't as good as I thought it was. Maybe the pitching staff will get a boost in a week or so as John Dover and Felix Godinez will be sent up from A+ Stockton, with a couple of hitters Steve Belk and Dave Encinas almost ready to make the jump up to AA too.

A+ Stockton Ports: 31-19, 1st in the North Division (California League). May Record: 21-8.

The Ports have really clicked this month, at the start of the month they were 5th in the Division and just under .500 but have turned that around with an impressive May. They've been lead by excellent pitching from John Dover, Esteban Alba, Felix Godinez and Alex Acosta. On the other side of the coin the hitters have been even more impressive with the likes of Raul Barragan, Hector Hernandez, Steve Belk and Estevan Carranza really sticking it to the pitchers of the California League, most of whom, I'm sure are hoping these guys aren't long for this league.

Manager, Dave Eufracio, who's been in charge since 1988 will be hoping he can add to the title he won in 1992. Eufracio is rated highly in the organization and will be moving up the minor league ladder come the season's end.

A Aurora Cougars: 24-25, 5GB 5th in the Eastern Division (Midwest League). May Record: 13-15

A strange month for Aurora as they pretty much seemed to win a game, lose the next win a game and so on. They really are a mixed back in some hitting categories they're up towards the top and others down towards the bottom and it's a similar story with the pitching.

To be fair to the manager, Josh Halstead, he's not been given the greatest roster he's ever had to work with, but he and his staff have gotten the best out of a few players.

June 2nd, St. Louis Royals (34-23, 1st NL Central) @ Phoenix Suns (32-23, 2nd NL West, 0.5GB) Attendance: 28,781

We got on the board in the 2nd when J.Moore singles and plates 2 runners, we then add a further 2 runs in the 3rd with a Mendez solo shot and later on in the inning J.Gonzalez drives in Bowman. The Royals pull a run back in the 5th and then the 7th. Top of the 9th and Riley is on for the save.....he blows it the Royals rally and tie it up at 4. Bottom of the 9th and we have a couple of runners on and J.Gonzalez makes contact with the ball and it drops in shallow left field and Mendez makes it home from 3rd.

St. Louis Royals 4 - 5 Phoenix Suns

The Royals pulled 1 back in the 7th but that was the final run of the game. A nice win keeps our winning streak going, even though Thomas didn't have his best performance on the mound.

Rule 4 Draft:
6/5 The Rookie draft is upon us, it's been reported by BNN that the first ten selections are likely to include;

2) Bill Maldonado. 18 year-ols SS from Deer Park HS, Cincinnati. Maldonado is projected to be a .300+ hitter and an above average defender at shortstop.
3) Xavier Tauber. 22 year-old RHP from the University of Columbia, South Carolina. Tauber is expected to peak as a #3 starter. 3 of his 4 pitched are plus pitches.
4) Brian McLeod. 20 year-old C from Mendocino College, Ukiah, California. Whilst not an elite defender he ranks to above average at the position. Has some pop in his bat.
5) Jeff Perry. 19 year-old RHP from Parish Episcopal HS, Dallas, Texas. Scouts expect Perry to be a top of the rotation arm.

June 5th, 1998 MLB Draft

The Tampa Pirates held the first overall selection in the 1998 first year player draft and they surprised everyone by taking LHP Keith Kerrigan. The 22 year-old out of Louisiana State University, wasn't ranked in the top 10 prospects before the draft. Kerrigan is a 2-pitch pitcher with a heavy sinker and a plus-plus slider. But he wouldn't look out of place at this moment in the major leagues.

Phoenix Suns Draft Picks

1st Round 2nd Overall
We used our first ever pick to select 19 year-old CF Evan Bielawski (R/R) out of Quinnipiac Junior College. Bielawski played CF in college and High School and has the ability to stay at that position in the majors. He makes contact and has some pop, but may need to work on his patience at the plate. He hit .343 with 19 home runs this year. He is looking for $2,000,000 signing bonus, which should make a deal between us possible. (Bielawski was drafted by the Los Angeles Blue Sox in the 1997 draft(4th rd 118th pick) but failed to sign.

2nd Round 51st Overall
In the 2nd round the Suns went the High School route and picked up highly regarded 18 year-old RHP Zack Allen out of McClellan High School, Little Rock, Arkansas. He features a 92-94 mph fastball, a changeup that needs a little more work, but has a plus-plus curveball. He's also blessed with the ability to control and move the ball. He went 12-0 in 16 starts with a 0.71 era in 126.2 innings, gave up 20 walks but racked up 232 K's. He wants a signing bonus of $190,000 which is under slot and is considered an easy sign for the Suns.

3rd Round 83rd Overall
In the 3rd round we selected another High School pitcher, when we selected 18 year-old LHP Josh McKay out of Allegan High School, Michigan. His fastball(90-92mph) and curveball project to be plus pitches when fully developed and his changeup a decent enough pitch to throw in the majors. Like Allen, McKay is blessed with control and able to move the ball. He went 11-0 in 16 starts with a 0.75 era in 108.2 innings, gave up 16 walks and recorded 199 K's. He wants $190,000 which is under slot and is considered an easy sign for the Suns.

4th Round 115th Overall
In the 4th round we again drafted another High School pitcher, when we selected 18 year-old RHP Kyle Fritsch out of Appalachian High School, Oneonta, Alabama. His fastball is 91-93 mph, throws a cut fastball, slider, forkball and changeup. All of his pitches aside from the slider(which is not good) will be serviceable pitches in the majors and if all goes well he could anchor the middle of a starting rotation. He went 11-0 in 16 starts with an era of 0.97 in 111 innings, gave up 25 walks and recorded 181 K's. He wants a $125,000 signing bonus which is under slot and is considered a hard sign for the Suns.

5th Round 145th Overall
Again we selected a High School pitcher, 18 year-old LHP Ian Breece out of Houston Academy, Dothan, Alabama. Not the hardest thrower (88-90 mph) but he does have an interesting 4 pitch mix. Again he's blessed with good control, whilst he may not strikeout 250 hitters in a year, he's skilled at getting outs in that wiley soft throwing left handed way. He went 7-2 in 13 starts with an era of 1.30 in 89.2 innings, gave up 15 walks and recorded 120 K's. He does want a $1,000,000 signing bonus which is over slot and is considered an extremely hard sign for the Suns.

6th Round 175th Overall
This time we selected a College pitcher, 21 year-old LHP Steve Bower out of South Dakota State College, Brookings, South Dakota. He throws a 3 pitch mix and his fastball hits 95-97 mph on the radar gun with an above average Slider and changeup. Bower needs to work on his movement and with his high work ethic we don't need to worry about him messing around and wasting his talent. In 20 starts he went 11-3 with a 2.97 era in 133.1 innings, gave up 56 walks and recorded 150 K's. He's already signed and reported to the Arizona Suns.

7th Round 205th Overall
We selected 18 year-old [B]C John Miller S/R[/B out of North Eugene High School, Eugene, Oregon. Miller projects to be a good defensive catcher but his bat needs some work, but hopefully it will. He hit for .448 in 96 ABs in his senior year. He's already signed and has reported to the Arizona Suns.

8th Round 235th Overall
In the 8th round we selected 23 year-old RHP T.J. Bowers out of Oklahoma College, Norman, Oklahoma. He throws a 4 pitch mix and maxes out around 91-93 mph on the radar gun. He has good stuff and movement but needs to work on his control. He went 7-4 with a 3.82 era in 96.2 innings, with 51 walks and 103 K's. He's already signed and has reported to the Arizona Suns.

9th Round 265th Overall
We selected 18 year-old RF Dennis Parent L/L out of Sandburg High School, Orland Park, Illinois. In his senior year he hit .427 in 110ABs with 7 home runs and 35 RBIs. He should be able to handle a corner outfield spot and he has some pace on the base paths. He's already signed and has reported to the Arizona Suns.

10th Round 295th Overall
In the 10th round we again went back to High School and selected 18 year-old RHP Randy Thiessen out of Liberty Christian, Argyle, Texas. He went 8-3 with a 1.09 era in 109 innings pitched, he gave up 30 walks and recorded 178 K's. He's demanding $750,000 and is considered a hard sign for the Suns.

June 5th, Phoenix Suns (35-23, 1st NL West) @ Oakland Oaks (36-24, 1st AL West) Attendance: 34,737

Line-ups;
Suns: J.Moore SS, McClary LF, Mendez 1B, Serrano RF, J.Gonzalez C, Rivera DH, Bowman CF, Hernandez 3B, R.Moore 2B, Benayoun P.
Oaks: D/Pacheco 2B, O.Gonzalez 3B, B.Humphries RF, R.Burton 1B, M.Morgan C, B.Jauregui LF, H.Silva SS, W.Ortega DH, D.Martin CF, J.Davis P.

Serrano had himsef a game today, he went 3 for 5 with 1 home run, 2 doubles and drove in 4 runs. Elisha Benayoun had a good return after his injury, although I was less than impressed that manager R.Delgado left him in for 123 pitches. We got on the board in the first when Serrano drove in J.Moore. It stayed that way until the 6th when Serrano belted a home run to make it 2-0 Suns. We then added 3 runs in the 7th, McClary doubled to score J.Moore and Serrano plated the 2 Suns that were on base to make it 5-0. The Oaks pulled a run back in the bottom of the 7th and that's how the scoring finished.

Phoenix Suns 5 - 1 Oakland Oaks

Home Runs;
Suns: Serrano (4)
Oaks: -
WP: Benayoun 2-1 (1.57)
LP: J.Davis 1-2 (4.98)
POTG: Serrano

June 6th, Phoenix Suns (36-23, 1st NL West) @ Oakland Oaks (36-25, 1st AL West) Attendance: 34,929

Line-ups;
Suns: J.Moore SS, McClary LF, Mendez 1B, Hansen DH, Serrano RF, Bowman CF, Hernandez 3B, J.Gonzalez C, R.Moore 2B, Hurt P.

This was a tight one and sadly for us the Oaks took a late lead and managed to hold on for the win. In the 3rd Hansen singled and J.Moore score and asisted by a throwing error Mendez was able to score from third. In the 5th the Oaks put together some hits and with 2 outs managed to score 3 runs and take the lead, with some excellent pitching from D.Webb and their bullpen the Oaks prevented anymore Suns from scoring.
