Help needed idenifying these two.

Both players were photographed in the early 70s. Not sure if either made it to the majors. The pictures were taken during spring training.

Yankee and Met Photos

Not sure who that Yankee is, but the photo is reversed. Look at the "O" in New York on his chest. It's before the Y instead of after. So the mystery man is a left-hander.

Good catch. It appears to be lefthander Gary Jones who pitched for the Yankees in 1970-71. I reversed the photo and found 2 matches from the Topps Vault offerings.

Mets 1972

While contemplating the Mystery Mets player, I saw a few Mets from 1972 that were not on cards with the Mets.

Lute Barnes played 2B-SS for the Mets in 1972-73

Bob Rauch was a relief pitcher in 1972, his only year in the major leagues

Tommy Moore pitched for the Mets in 1972-73

Joe Nolan was a catcher with the Mets in 1972. He went on to a long career with the Braves, Reds, and Orioles.

Brent Strom pitched for the Mets in 1972. He was the Mets #1 pick out of USC in the 1970 draft. He was traded after 1972 to Cleveland and then San Diego. He was the 2nd pitcher ever to have "Tommy John" surgery. Strom's surgery did not work for him. People today joke that successful surgery is "Tommy John surgery" while unsuccessful surgery is "Brent Strom surgery".

The Mystery Met is clearly wearing #48. Joe Nolan is wearing #35 in the pic above, but according to Baseball-Reference he also wore #48. Nino Espinosa wore #48 in 1974 and then Randy Tate in 1975, but could this be Nolan in spring training '73? Nolan didn't make any more appearances for the Mets after those four games in '72 but he was still in the Mets organization through April '75.

The material of the uniform appears to still be the cotton style before the league was taken over by the double knit poly starting with the pirates in 71. I don't think the Mets swithed fabric until the 1972 season. So the pic should be spring training 72 or before. I don't think it is Nolan, he batted left handed. Barnes is a possibility but not sure still. Thanks to everyone who is working on it for me.

Possible answer to mystery Met

This could be the mystery Met. I checked my 1971 Sporting News "Dope Book" and it has the 1971 40 man rosters for each team. The 1971 Mets have listed as #48 - outfielder George Kazmarek. He never played in the major leagues but was the Mets #1 pick in the 1968 draft. You can find his statistics in the minor league section at Baseball Reference.com. Sorry that I do not have a photo to compare.

A few more short time employees

Some of these guys had long major league careers but stopped only briefly with this team or it was one of the last teams for which they played.

Ray Sadecki - P with the 1975 Braves

Billy Conners - P with the 1967-68 Mets

Hector Torres - INF with the 1977 Blue Jays

Dick Selma - P with the 1969 Cubs

Max Alvis - 3B with the 1970 Brewers

I can hardly recognize the relatively svelte, Billy Connors pictured above. He really blimped out in later years when he was the NY Yankees pitching coach.
