2026/2027 Season - December

2026/2027 Season - December

Blue Sox SS 'Headcase' Collard put together a 20-game hit streak.

Hayden Foreman, who'd been throwing superbly, strained his hamstring on the 12th December and would be out for up to 9 weeks.

In the first trade of the regular season, the Thunder packed off 3B Bruno 'Candy' Donovan, just returned from injury, to the Cowboys in exchange for a catching prospect.

Already struggling, the Fury lost Gavin Moss until the middle of February with plantar fascitis.

Phillip DeGruchy, who'd signed a 2-year deal with the Metros in the off-season, reportedly was getting more and more frustrated at being the backup catcher. There are several quotes in the archives of him publicly talking trade. The 38 year-old had declined sharply over the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

December Rookie of the Month went to Roos catcher Clint Murphy. He hit .343/.380/.537 across the month, 23-67, with 7 dbls, 2HR, and 18RBI.

Hurler of the Month went to Newcastle's Baden Binns. He went 4-0 across 6 starts, with an ERA of only 0.88. He threw 41 innings, struck out 27, allowed 26 hits and walked 8. The previous two months of his 2026 campaign had been poor.

Slugger of the Month was awarded to Rick 'Wildcat' Fallon of the Perth Heat. he was 39-104, with a stat-line of .375/.425/.567. 9 doubles, 1 triples, 3 home runs and 24 runs batted in.

The Roos began to pull away in the NSWNZ, 8 games ahead of the Metros by Jan. 1. The Heat had manufactured a 4-game lead over the Bandits and Aces.

Dermott Ford led the league in average at the halfway point. The 35 year-old seemed to be getting better with age.

Jarrod Guerin and Ding-Bong Zhai led the HR leaderboard, Axel Stennings the WAR board.

Bert Blanksby had the best ERA, Rick Hoolahan and Terence Pi the most wins. Auckland's Sean 'Stubblebeard' Morrow had the best FIP, the only pitcher under 3 (2.73).

2026/2027 Season - January

2026/2027 Season - January

Notable Performances

6 Jan: Aces 3B Ralph Chapman hits for the cycle in a 16-10 victory over the Cavalry.

13 Jan: Canberra SP Robert Colcott shut out the Heat 3-0, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 7.

16 Jan: Paul 'Steely' McKinna of the Fury blanked the Blue Sox 4-0, allowing only 1 hit and 1 walk.

20 Jan: Ralph Chapman continued his great month, going 5-6 in a 12-4 victory over the Venom.

24 Jan: Roos backup 1B Troy Trewartha went 5-5 in a 9-2 spanking of the Venom.

29 Jan: Jarrod Guerin blasted 3HR, driving in 5, to help the Fury beat the Prospects 9-4.

Notable Injuries

2 Jan: Prospects SP Rob Glatz diagnosed with shoulder inflammation, expected to miss 4-5 months.

6 Jan: Cavalry SS Marcello Caffyn partially tore his labrum and would be out for 4 months. Caffyn was hitting .303 on the season.

10 Jan: In devastating news for the Fury, Stewart Warwick fractured his foot and was expected to be out until the middle of February. Warwick had been surging, as was his second-half custom, going 13-25 in his previous 6 games, with 2HR.

13 Jan: The Metros lose CF James Thwaites for 3 weeks with a herniated disk.

18 Jan: December Slugger of the Month Rick Fallon fractured his hand and would be out until mid-March.

Notable Trades

3 Jan: The Metros sent 27 year-old 3B Bob 'Gold Mine' Merritt (.328/.384/.464, 30-192, 12dbl, 1 triple, 4HR, a Player of the Week award in December) to Central Coast in exchange for mediocre 2B Lindsay Shultz and a minor league prospect 1B.

3 Jan: In a bid to cover Foreman's injury, the Roos traded 2 prospects to the Venom for SP Fraser Scott. the 27 year-old would take the #3 spot in the rotation. Scott had a 4.78 FIP and a 1.74 WHIP before the trade.

20 Jan: The Aces sent injury-prone 25 year-old CF Stewart Digby (eclipsed by rookie Luis Chavez) to the Bandits in exchange for a minor league starting pitcher and 26 year-old reliever David Colson. Colson, a groundball pitcher with a below average fastball, a terrible changeup and a great curveball, would slot into the closer role for the Aces.

27 Jan: Perth acquired SP Alistair Blanksby from the Metros in return for RF Gareth Cobb and a minor league SP.

28 Jan: The Blue Sox traded 2 minor leaguers (1 a prospect, the other a fringe AUNZBL player) to the Thunder in return for 1B Joel Grimes. A free agent at the end of the 2025 season, Grimes had found no takers until the 2026 season got underway, signing a one-year deal with the Thunder. The Blue Sox were hoping his power could help them make a late push for a wildcard spot.

Month Awards

Rookie of the Month: Melbourne's Luis Chavez picked this award up again, with a stat-line of .352/.448/.591 in January. His 31-88 included 4 doubles, a triple, and 5 home runs.

Hurler of the Month: Melbourne's Damian Neill. 6-1 in 7 starts, 36 hits in 50.1 IP, 31Ks, ERA of 2.15.

Slugger of the Month: Elliot Wilkins of the Roos. In the middle of an MVP-type season, the 26 year-old was 40-106, his stat-line reading: .377/.451/.783. He hit 9 doubles, 2 triples and 10HR in the month of January, driving in 31.

Other Notes

18 Jan: Roos outfielder Charlie Rees was suspended for 8 games following an all-in brawl with the Fury. This was Rees' second suspension of the 2026 season for fighting, and the third of his career.

End of month: Dermott Ford extended his lead in the batting title race to be 18 percentage points clear at the end of January.

Bert Blanksby continued to hold a firm grip on most things pitching. Perhaps the preseason pitching predictions would be right for once.

The Roos slipped a bit in January, as the Fury surged to be only 5 games behind February 1st. The Heat held steady in the Australian Division, increasing their lead by 1. The Thunder picked themselves up above .400; the Prospects continued to languish.

2026/2027 Season - February

2026/2027 Season - February

Notable Performances

4 Feb: Metros 1B Mike 'Penguin' Millar recorded a 20-game hit streak.

5 Feb: Robin Pride, left-fielder for the Venom, went 5-5 as his team crushed the Cowboys 16-2.

7 Feb: In a revenge performance, Cowboys SS Neil 'Hamburger' Browne went 5-6 as Christchurch smashed the Venom 15-6.

7 Feb: In that same game, Venom SS Karl 'Dragoon' Rice's hit streak reached 20 games. For the season, Rice was hitting .343/.392/.470, at that time second on the batting average leaderboard.

9 Feb: Millar extends his hit streak to 25 games. Unfortunately that is as far as it would go, giving him 3rd equal place on the all-time hitting streak leaderboard.

9 Feb: 1B Carlo Dunne goes 5-5 as the Venom topple the Blue Sox 10-3.

12 Feb: Rice hits in his 25th straight game. That is where the streak ended though, putting him alongside Millar and 2 others as 3rd-equal on the all-time hitting streak list.

15 Feb: Fury LF Simon Bell had a stellar day at the plate, going 6-7 as the Venom were destroyed 21-4.

18 Feb: Elliot Wilkins' solo effort in the 2nd innings against the Cowboys earned him his 100th RBI for the year, the first player to pass that mark.

19 Feb: In a year for 20-game hit streaks, Aces 1B Ralph Vader collected one of his own.

21 Feb: Vader's hit streak ends at 21 games.

23 Feb: Phil McLaren of the Bandits threw a one-hitter against the Fury, walking none and striking out 12. His game score was 97.

23 Feb: Venom 1B Byron Scott hit for the cycle against Hobart. Adelaide won 12-7.

26 Feb: Robin Pride hit in his 20th consecutive game. His streak would end the next day.

27 Feb: Damian Neill shut out the Thunder on 4 hits and 1 walk, striking out 7, as the Aces cruised to a 9-nothing victory.

Notable Injuries

6 Feb: Stewart Warwick suffered a setback in his recovery from his fractured foot and would miss another 3 weeks of the season.

10 Feb: Cowboys 1B Roland Clow (.294/.357/.462, 17HR on the season) fractured his finger and would be out for a month.

12 Feb: James Thwaites suffers another injury, this time a fractured finger as a result of being hit by a pitch. He would be out for up to 6 weeks.

14 Feb: Warwick suffered another setback, keeping him out at least until the second week of March.

Month Awards

Rookie of the Month: Canberra outfielder Blake Foley. He went nuts in February, hitting .395/.420/.671, 30-76, with 2 doubles, 2 triples, 5HRs and 3 walks.

Hurler of the Month: Phil 'Vacuum' McLaren. The Bandits SP went 5-0 across the month, striking out 38 in 40.1 innings, and only allowing 22 hits and 10 walks. His ERA was 2.68.

Slugger of the Month: Jason McHugh of the Newcastle Roos. .379/.425/.689 across the month, with 5 doubles and 9HR among his 39 hits.

Other Notes

Dermott Ford still had his grasp on the batting title, though he was facing stiff competition from Karl Rice. Jarrod Guerin led the league with 35 HR. Elliot Wilkins continued his stellar season, as did pitcher Bert Blanksby. Rick Hoolahan led the league in strikeouts, with 163. No qualified starter was striking out more than 8 batters per 9 innings.

Both the Heat and the Roos were managing to hold off their division rivals. The Fury found themselves 5 games off the NSWNZ Division lead, but still 4 games behind in the wildcard race. Unless they could mount a March-surge, it looked as if this would be the 3rd straight season no NZ teams played postseason ball. Incidentally, the Fury had been the last NZ to make the postseason, and had won it all.

2026/2027 Season - March

2026/2027 Season - March

Notable Performances

2 Mar: Tu-An Tseng pitched his way to a 6-hit shutout v the Cowboys.

19 Mar: Matthew Flynn of the Metros hits for the cycle, going 4-4 and driving in 6, as Auckland disposed of the Prospects 7-1.

21 Mar: Perth's Randy Britton threw a 5-hit shutout v the Venom, to take him to 18-9 for the year.

23 Mar: Tom Thorne allowed only 4 hits and walked 4 in shutting out the Thunder 7-0. The Fury SP hadn't had the greatest of years, but that would be a nice note to end on.

25 Mar: Fu Lao led the Roos to a shutout victory over the Prospects, allowing only 2 hits and a walk. The final score was 6-0.

Notable Injuries

10 Mar: Frontrunner for Rookie of the Year, Luis Chavez, bruised his wrist. He would be out until the postseason. A blow for the Aces.

11 Mar: Bandits SP Arnold Chappell tore his labrum and would be out of the game for a year. While he wasn't having the greatest of seasons, he was an integral part of the Bandits rotation. At the time of his injury the Bandits had pulled to within 2 games of the Heat in the Australian Division.

20 Mar: Jason McHugh strained his hamstring, keeping him out for at least 3 weeks. A hard knock for the Roos heading into the postseason.

Month Awards

Batting title: Dermott Ford, with a .341 average. Karl Rice finished on .338.

HR Crown: Jarrod Guerin with 43. He was the only player to hit more than 40HRs in the 2026 season.

RBI Leader: Elliot Wilkins with 119, 10 more than his closest rival, Benjamin Beamish.

Most wins: Bert Blanksby, 19-6.

Most saves: Terrence Tunnicliffe, 42. He also notched up 10 wins coming on at the death.

Best FIP: Terence Pi with 3.17 (ERA of 2.64).

Other Notes

The fight for the Australian Division pennant came down to the final day, with Brisbane finishing off a late-season push to be equal with the Heat. It just so happened they were playing each other in a series, too, and Brisbane won the pivotal game 5-4 to take the Division title. The Heat still made the postseason, as did the Melbourne Aces, beating out the Fury for the final wildcard spot by 1 game. The Roos finished 10 games ahead in the NSWNZ.

2026 Leaderboards

2026 Leaderboards

39 year-old Byron Eissens found himself on top of a whole lot of categories at the end of the regular season. He hit more HR in the 2026 season than he had since 2023.

Almost all the experts picked Bert Blanksby to win Hurler of the Year.

While Warwick had made a successful return from injury, his long layoff meant Slugger of the Year was open slather. Elliot Wilkins, Byron Eissens (even though he only hit .276), Tim Miller (who'd come from nowhere, and been with 2 teams--Cavalry, Metros--in 2026), Dermott Ford and Karl Rice rounded out most commentators' top 5 to win.

2026 Division Finals - Melbourne Aces v Newcastle Roos

2026 Division Finals - Melbourne Aces v Newcastle Roos

A rematch of the 2024 & 2025 Championships, except a round earlier.

The Roos were the highest run-scorers in the AUNZBL, Melbourne 4th-highest. The Roos had conceded the 4th least runs against, Melbourne the 5th. The Roos had the regular season advantage, winning 9 of 16. All the experts predicted a closely fought, but high-scoring series.

It turned out not to be close at all, the Aces cruising to victory in 3 games.

The Roos weren't helped when Hayden Foreman left the mound clutching his shoulder before he'd even recorded an out in Game 1. Rick Hoolahan then rubbed salt onto the wound by throwing a 3-hit, no walk shutout to set the tone for the series.

Hurler of the Series went to Hoolahan for his impressive effort. Damian Neill also threw a CG in Game 3, allowing 1 ER off 4 hits.

Slugger of the Series was awarded to Ralph Vader, who hit .600/.643/.700. No HR, but constantly on base.

Matt Dickinson hit a grand slam in Game 2, his second postseason slammer.

2026 Division Finals - Perth Heat v Brisbane Bandits

2026 Division Finals - Perth Heat v Brisbane Bandits

They fought each other for the Division crown to end the regular season, and would fight each other again in the first round of the playoffs, the Bandits with the initial home advantage.

Brisbane boasted the best defensive record in the league, Perth the second-best. The Bandits had the second-best offense, though, compared to the Heat's fifth-best.

It seemed the Bandits late surge to 1st spot in the Australian Division had snuffed out the Heat's fire, as the Bandits got it done in 3 games. For the second straight season, the Heat had failed to fire a post-season shot.

The Heat lost star infielder Vinnie Egan for the series in the first game. He hurt his forearm making a routine out. While that was a blow, the real problem the Heat had was converting runners on base into runs on the scoreboard.

Hurler of the Series went to Randy Britton for his 8 inning, no-run effort in Game 3.

Slugger of the Series went to Bandits CF Bruce Pickford. Hitting only .247/.302/.384 on the year, the lead-off man found a grove in the series, cracking .385/.385/1.077, 5-13, with 2HR, a triple and a double.

2026 Championship - Melbourne Aces v Brisbane Bandits

2026 Championship - Melbourne Aces v Brisbane Bandits

The Aces were looking for consecutive Championships, the Bandits for their first. Most were of the opinion the Aces would go back-to-back, even though the Bandits were clearly the better regular season team. "Too much big-game experience in the Aces," was one common quote in the couple days leading up to the Championship Series.

Game 1

Rick Hoolahan would start for the Aces in Game 1, Phil McLaren for the Bandits.

While Hoolahan only allowed 4 hits, he also walked 5, letting in 5 runs across his 6.1 IP. McLaren, on the other hand, allowed 5 hits and walked 3, but only allowed 1 run, in the top of the second. He pitched 8 innings for the victory, the Bandits winning 5-1.

All the Game 1 hits were singles, Aces 1B Blair Forbes going 3-4.

Game 2

The Aces would continue to stutter, going down 6-1, only getting 7 runners on base the entire game. A rain delay in the fourth shortened Bert Blanksby's night, but he still threw 5.1 innings to get the W.

The majority of the damage was inflicted by Brisbane in the bottom of the fourth, immediately following the rain delay. The Aces decided to keep Russell Roberts in (as the Bandits had done with Blanksby), but his arm must've gotten cold, because he gave up a first-pitch home run to Cam Bywaters, and then let in 4 more runs for a 5-run inning.

Aces 2B Ronald Buckby suffered a high-ankle sprain sliding into second, and would not play again in the series.

Game 3

Back in Melbourne, the Aces were hoping for something to spark them off. Dependable Carlo Browne got the start, facing equally dependable Bandit, Randy Britton.

The Aces could once again only manage 4 hits, as Britton threw 7 strong innings, walking none. Fortunately for Melbourne, they were able to turn one of those hits into a run. And, even better for them, all their pitchers stepped up to the plate. Browne threw 7.1, allowing only 3 hits and 2 walks, and their bullpen combined to throw 1 2/3 hitless, walkless, scoreless innings. Final score: Aces 1, Bandits 0.

Game 4

Damian Neill leaked 6 runs in 6.2 innings, on the back of 10 hits and a walk. And once again, the Aces offense couldn't kick into gear. Elliot Browne threw 8 innings for 5 hits and 5 walks, and only 2 earned runs, the Bandits cruising to victory 7-2.

Bandits SS Sandro Ortego, who'd entered the league in the offseason as a South American free agent, hit a 2-run HR in the 4th, only the second HR of the series.

Game 5

The Bandits were 1 win away from a maiden Championship. Would the pressure get to them? Or would the Aces rediscover their offense and take the series back to Brisbane?

The answer to both those questions was an emphatic, 'No!' The Bandits scored 2 in the top of the 1st, then 6 in the top of the 4th, adding more regularly while the Aces could still only muster a handful of hits. The eventual 16-0 thrashing was a fitting end to what had been one of the most one-sided Chamionship series on record.

It was, though, a great way for the Bandits to chalk up that first title.

Axel Stennings, Beau Gaynon, Patrick Hendricks, and Mark Chambers all homered for the Bandits. The Aces didn't manage one HR all series.

Axel Stennings also set a post-season game record for most hits, going 5-6.

Hurler of the Series was awarded to the entire Bandits pitching group.. As a unit, they allowed only 5 runs in the entire series, making an Aces lineup full of stars look decidedly poor.

Slugger of the Series went to Patrick Hendricks. He hit .526/.571/.789 across the series, with 2 4-hit games, and 6 runs scored.

Offseason

Offseason

2026 Season Notes

While batting average stayed static at .259, ERA leaped to 4.10, the highest in the history of the league.

The Newcastle Roos remained the only team to claim more than one Championship.

League Evolution

9 Apr: The AUNZBL governing body announced that the active roster for the 2027 season and onward would be reduced from 25 players to 24. There was no clear reason given for the change. Most within the baseball community (but outside the halls of governance) weren't especially agreeable towards the move.

Notable Club Happenings

9 Apr: The Venom fired their manager. The new recruit would be the 3rd manager hired in 3 seasons. They also sacked their bench coach.

9 Apr: The Thunder fired their manager, also at the club for only one season. Their bench coach was immediately promoted to fill the void.

9 Apr: Canberra showed their GM the door. He too had only been in the job for a year. Their bench coach was shown the door, as well.

11 Apr: Hobart Prospects owner Charlie Mekville passed away from a heart attack. His son, Arbur Mekville, took over ownership of the ball club.

Notable Free Agent Signings/Player Contract Extensions

9 May: Byron Eissens signs a 2-year extension with the Bandits. The extension would see him playing until the age of 41.

11 May: Allan Lloyd filed for free agency, but only to drive his value with 2026 club, the Cowboys, up. In the end he signed with them for 4 more years.

21 May: Keiran Tennant signs with the Venom for 6 years. Perth fans were devastated their ace had decided to move on.

22 May: Perth lost another free agent, as 35 year-old infielder Benjamin Beamish signed a big 2-year deal with the Metros.

23 May: Former Roos closer, and second in the 2026 Hurler of the Year voting, Terence Tunnicliffe, signed with the Aces for 3 years. Opinion was divided as to whether the 35 year-old pitcher would continue to be as dangerous in the second and third years of his contract.

23 May: SS Matthew Flynn signs a 5-year contract with the Roos. Flynn’s lifetime stat-line at the time was: .274/.328/.441 with 105 HR (avg. 15HR a year). The 28 year-old had 2 Gold Gloves to his name, as well as 2 All-Star appearances.

26 May: Baden Binns signed a 5-year extension with the Roos. Binns was 86-73 lifetime.

30 May: Ghi-Cheng Lee re-signed with the Roos for 4 years. The 5-time All Star passed both 200 HR and 1000 hits in the 2026 season.

9 Jun: Sydney signed SP Raymond Chambers for 2 years. The leftie would be their #2 starter.

10 Jun: Former Metros outfielder Mike ‘Penguin’ Millar signed a 2-year deal with the Roos. Millar, 35, had a .320/.412/.426 stat-line, with 1291 hits. He also had a long injury history.

7 Jul: 26 year-old RHP Sugimoto Okubo entered the league as a free agent in May 2027, along with footage of him dominating a recently set-up Japanese summer league. Several teams fought for his services, but in the end he signed with the Cowboys for 3 years.

9 Jul: The Metros snared Phil ‘Vacuum’ McLaren for 4 years.

11 Aug: Simon ‘Dude’ Stobbie, 83-70 lifetime with a 4.09 FIP, signed for 7 years with the Aces. Most experts were surprised both at the length of the deal and the supposed value, saying that while Stobbie was decent, he wasn’t in the top tier of AUNZBL pitchers.

24 Aug: Canberra signed 28 year-old SS Bob Wise (.278/.310/.398 lifetime with 1058 hits) to a one-year deal. The two-time Gold Glover took a pay cut to stay playing in the AUNZBL.

14 Sep: Joel Grimes signed another 1-year deal with the Blue Sox.

Notable Trades

9 Apr: The Prospects sent 32 year-old catcher Drew Moss to the Venom for 3 minor league prospects, thus living up to their name.

3 May: 34 year-old Prospects outfielder Keith Maybury, a sharply declining journeyman was traded to the Roos for two minor leaguers.

23 May: The Cavalry acquired 33 year-old RF Rafael Birkbeck (career stat-line .279/.329/.428, 101HR; last 3 seasons hitting .262) from the Venom for MR Nigel Lane and a minor league pitching prospect.

26 May: Terence Pi, 15-9 in 2026 and 75-55 lifetime with a 3.41 FIP, found himself heading from Sydney to Brisbane in exchange for 4 minor leaguers.

Notable Injuries

18 Apr: 24 year-old Fury pitcher Phillip Scott, who partially tore his labrum at the beginning of January, found the injury too much to come back from, and retired from the game. In the 2025 season, at AAA-level, he’d thrown a perfect game, and at the time of his injury, in his rookie AUNZBL season, he was 7-3.

5 Sep: Perth SP Alistair Blanksby was the first Spring Training casualty, throwing only 4 pitches in his first spring start before leaving the mound complaining of elbow soreness. He would be sidelined until early in the regular season.

9 Sep: Central Coast lost 24 year-old SP Gordon Toman for the season. He tore a ligament in his elbow.

10 Sep: Mike Millar would miss the first few weeks of the 2027 campaign with a strained oblique.

10 Sep: The Metros lost their closer for 4 months. Sean ‘Stubblebeard’ Morrow needed surgery to remove a bone spur in his elbow.

28 Sep: Matt Dickinson suffered a latissimus dorsi strain and would be out for the first 3 weeks of the season.

2027 Preseason Predictions

2027 Preseason Predictions

2026 Champions, the Brisbane Bandits, were picked to take the Australian Division again, followed by the Aces and Cavalry.

In the NSWNZ, the Metros were predicted to finish on top, on the back of the league's second-best pitching and best offense. The Roos would slide to middle of the pack.

Kelvin Ackland, 1B for the Metros, was picked to be the league's best hitter. Warwick would be 6th best. Was it the end of an era?

Bert Blanksby and Randy Britton, both Bandits, would be the best pitchers.

2027/2028 Season - October

2027/2028 Season - October

Notable Performances

19 Oct: Keiran Tennant shuts out the cavalry 6-0 on 8 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 6.

21 Oct: Metros CF James Thwaites hits in the 1st 20 games of the season.

22 Oct: Fury SP Paul McKinna allowed only 3 hits and struck out 8 as Wellington beat the Aces 6-0 .

23 Oct: James Thwaites' hit streak ends at 21.

27 Oct: With 5 losses and zero wins next to his name, Prospects SP Kyle Birley was having a terrible start to the season (FIP over 7!). He would've felt better 9 innings into this game against the Thunder, as he allowed only 5 hits and 1 walk and, more importantly, 0 in the run column, to help his team to a 5-0 victory.

27 Oct: Carl Spruijt of the Venom went 5-7 in a 14-inning epic v the Cowboys. The Venom eventually won 6-5. All of Spruijt's hits came before extra innings.

Notable Injuries

1 Oct: While trying to turn a double-play, Aces 2B Ralph Chapman's knee took the brunt of a collision He would be out for 7 months with a broken kneecap.

13 Oct: Matt Dickinson's recovery hit a snag, expected to keep him out for a further two weeks.

14 Oct: Blue Sox closer An-yan Bian would be out for 3 months with ulnar nerve irritation.

22 Oct: Tyler Silk bruised his hand, and was likely to be day-to-day for the next week. Silk had struck out 29 in 28 innings so far in the season.

26 Oct: Instead of resting Silk for his next start, the Metros put him on the mound. He only lasted 4 innings (striking out 7) before coming off clutching his forearm. The diagnosis was tendinitis, and he would be out for a week. The Metros put him on the 11-day DL.

31 Oct: Jarrod Guerin, 2 HR shy of 300, strained his hammy and would be out for a month.

Notable Trades/Signings

13 Oct: Terence Pi, traded during the off-season to the Bandits, finalized a 2-year contract extension.

Month Awards

Rookie of the Month: Bandits 3B Joe Gordon. A late bloomer, and not actually performing that well, Gordon snared the award due to there being a small pool of rookies so far in the 2027 season, who were all performing even worse than him. His stat-line read .211/.306/.421. He did hit 6HRs on the month.

Hurler of the Month: Terence Pi. 5-0 across 6 starts, 41Ks in 39.1 innings, a 0.92 ERA and a 2.23 FIP.

Slugger of the Month: Axel Stennings. .324/.383/.639, 35-108, with 9 HR and 7 doubles, plus 26 RBI.

All three winners were from the Bandits.

Other Notes

The Bandits had an incredible October. The Prospects did not (not that even their most die-hard fans could've hoped otherwise leading into the season. Surely?).

In the NSWNZ, the Roos, Metros and Fury all had good starts.

Allan Lloyd led the average leaderboards at the end of October. He'd also chalked up 44 hits already, 2 ahead of James Thwaites. Tim Miller and Axel Stennings both sat atop the HR leaderboard.

Rupert Thurley of the Fury and Aces new recruit Terrence Tunnicliffe had both recorded 10 saves by the end of the month.

Paul McKinna had the best FIP with 2.18.

Stewart Warwick had a good month, going .321/.365/.545, 36-112, with 6HR and 7 doubles.

Standings, Nov 1

2027/2028 Season - November

2027/2028 Season - November

Notable Performances

1 Nov: Byron Eissens went 5-5 as the Bandits pounded the Venom 15-1. His hits included a 2-run triple, and 2 solo HRs.

1 Nov: Ben Oakley of the Cavalry went 5-5 as his side scraped past the Fury 3-2 in extra innings.

3 Nov: Karl Rice joins the 5-hit club, going 5-5 to help the Venom destroy the Metros 16-6.

6 Nov: Offense+ to begin the month. Fury backup infielder Alan Lowe hit 5-6 in a rare start, as Wellington disposed of the Venom 16-10.

11 Nov: Allan Lloyd hit in his 20th consecutive game.

13 Nov: Lloyd's hit streak ends at 21. He was hitting .420 for the season at the time.

15 Nov: Charles Jacobs, Thunder OF, goes 5-5. Unfortunately, the Thunder can't get over the Venom, losing 7-4.

Notable Injuries

6 Nov: In his first game back from injury, Tyler Silk strained his forearm and would be sidelined for a month. He threw 1 2/3 innings. It might be time for him to hang up his glove.

8 Nov: Roos SS Matthew Flynn (.237/.313/.398, 5HR) broke a bone in his hand. He'd be out for 4 months.

16 Nov: Roos CF Jason McHugh suffered a nasty head knock when diving into second base. Obviously concussed when helped from the field, it took a couple days and a barrage of various tests to confirm the severity of the concussion. He was told it would take up to 4 months to recover. His stat-line at the time was: .286/.360/.459.

18 Nov: Venom SP Hayden Dethridge (2-3, 3.72 ERA, 4.71 FIP) tore a muscle in his back and would be out of action for up to 5 months.

29 Nov: The Roos suffered another setback due to injury, with Mike Millar (.365/.433/.444) straining a hip muscle and being sidelined for 3 weeks.

30 Nov: In yet more bad news for the Roos, Jason Deas (.231/.328/.427, 11HR) strained his anterior cruciate ligament. He would need 4-5 weeks to recover.

Month Awards

Rookie of the Month: Russell Wheeler, a 29 year-old outfielder who had been March call-up material for the Metros the previous 2 seasons. He went .292/.345/.566 in November, 31-106, with 9 doubles, 1 triple, 6HR, 24RBI, and 8 walks.

Hurler of the Month: Terence Pi, for the second month in a row. He won each of his 6 starts, striking out 35 in 41 innings, with an ERA of 1.54. He was 11-0 for the year.

Slugger of the Month: Venom 2B Carl Spruijt. In a sizzling month, he hit .400/.411/.564, 44-110, with 9 doubles, 3HR and 16RBI.

Other Notes

The Bandits continued on their merry, dominating way, winning nearly 75% of their games in the first 2 months. The Aces already found themselves 10 games behind.

The Metros wrested the lead from the Roos by the end of November, but the NSWNZ was still being tightly contested between those two teams + the Fury. The Central Coast thunder found themselves in surprising territory: mid-table.

Allan Lloyd still led the batting race, and the WAR leaderboard, too.

Axel Stennings had the HR lead. Tim Miller had dropped off the HR pace badly in November, hitting only 2 all month.

Joel Grimes struck out 74 times in the first 2 months. While he'd belted 10HR, he was only hitting .187/.254/.374.

Randy Britton now had the league's best FIP with 2.55. Terrence Pi had a 0.80 WHIP.

Standings, Dec 1

4 Dec: Perth LF Steven Worsfold (.267/.370/.429, 3HR, 3 triples) strained a hip muscle, and would be unable to play for 5 weeks.

23 Dec: Vinnie Egan strained an oblique and would be out for a month. The Heat star was hitting .316/.409/.424 with 4HR.

Notable Trades/Signings

3 Dec: Auckland sent Tu-an Tseng to the Thunder in exchange for 25 year-old catcher Roland Schmidt and a minor league pitcher.

30 Dec: Randy Britton signs off on a 4-year extension with the Bandits. Many believed Britton, at 29, was just entering his prime.

Month Awards

Allan Lloyd continued to lead the batting race, Axel Stennings the HR race. Terence Pi was only allowing 6.14 hits per 9 innings, with a 0.85 WHIP. Randy Britton had the best FIP of 2.75, and the best WAR of 3.7. With a first half record of 15-1, Pi was on track to break Foreman's season win record of 26.

2027/2028 Season - January

2027/2028 Season - January

Notable Performances

1 Jan: Damian Neill saw in the new year by shutting down the Blue Sox. He allowed only 2 hits and struck out 10 as the Aces won 6-0.

1 Jan: Down in Hobart, Cavalry SP Mike Brodbeck gave up only 1 hit, walking 3 and striking out 7 as his team similarly won 6-0.

1 Jan: Apparently a few too many hitters were feeling not so pearly in the aftermath of December 31st, as Hayden Foreman led the Roos to a 5-0 defeat of the Venom. Foreman allowed 5 hits and struck out 4.

5 Jan: Norm Cornell, of the Cavalry, spun a 3-hit, 1-walk shutout of the Aces. Canberra won 6-0. On the year, Cornell was 7-4, with a 3.41 ERA and a 4.10 FIP. Only 24, he was often talked about as a pitcher to watch in the coming years.

9 Jan: It was starting out as a month for pitchers. Cooper Wakely of the Bandits threw a 2-hit shutout as the Bandits accounted for the Thunder 4-0.

22 Jan: Wes Albertson celebrated his arrival at Perth by belting 3 home runs in an 8-5 victory over the Cowboys.

Notable Injuries

2 Jan: 25 year-old Blue Sox 2B Vic Foreman (.242/.301/.395, 4HR) found out he'd broken a bone in his elbow at the end of December. He was placed on the 60-day disabled list and wasn't expected to swing a bat until May.

19 Jan: Allan Lloyd, leading the average race (.348/.447/.436) strained a hamstring while extending a single into a double. He would be out for 6 weeks.

23 Jan: Betting agencies were able to wind up the 'how long will Tyler Silk last' promotions they'd been running all season. Silk tore his rotator cuff for the 3rd time, and if he was determined to play again would need 11 months of rehab time. Silk finished the season with a 6-4 record from 15 starts, a 4.04 ERA, a 3.35 FIP and 88Ks in 78 innings.

24 Jan: Hot on the heels of the Silk injury, the Metros lost star CF James Thwaites (.333/.395/.550, 15HR) to a back problem, sustained while climbing the wall to record an out against the Aces. He would likely be out the rest of the regular season.

30 Jan: Carl Spruijt (.310/.338/.421, 6HR) strained his hamstring and would be sidelined for 5 weeks.

Notable Trades/Signings

6 Jan: The Cavalry sent 28 year-old LF Wes Albertson (.242/.272/.349) and a prospect to the Heat for 29 year-old SP Ramon Martinez (8-5, 2.51 ERA, 3.73 FIP). It seemed a weird move, as Perth were still well in the hunt for a wildcard and Martinez was arguably their best performing starter.

7 Jan: The very next day, the Heat pulled the trigger on another trade, sending 26 year-old OF Steven Worsfold (.267/.370/.429, 3HR, in 46 games) to the Aces in exchange for 33 year-old 1B Ralph Vader (.258/.304/.368, 7HR) and a 19 year-old outfielder.

17 Jan: In probably the biggest eyebrow-raising trade of the season so far, the Metros dealt LF Tim Miller (27y/o, .302/.372/.541, 5 triples, 15HR, 3.7WAR) to the Thunder for 28 year-old LF Cameron Dutton (.232/.263/.458, 7HR across 44 games) and a minor league pitcher. Dutton slotted into the DH role.

17 Jan: The Cowboys sent 29 y/o SP Mitchell Bond (8-7, 3.66 ERA, 3.60 FIP) to the Venom, getting 25 y/o LF Luke Urry (.267/.312/.382, 4HR) and a minor leaguer in return.

Month Awards

Rookie of the Month: Pierre LeCoeur, 1B for the Aces. The historical data is inconsistent as to whether he entered Australia from central America or old Canada. Certainly Canadian-born, LeCoeur was a very intelligent young man who went .355/.469/.538, 33-93, with 7 doubles, 2 triples, 2HR, and 20 walks in January to fully deserve the award.

Hurler of the Month: Roos reliever Rhys Jamieson. He recorded 8 saves and 2 wins in 12 games across January. He had a WHIP of 0.73 and an ERA of 1.32.

Slugger of the Month: Rick 'Wildcat' Fallon of the Heat. The CF hit .352/.402/.619 across the month, going 37-105, with 10 doubles and 6HR.

Unfortunately, he broke his kneecap on the last day of the month and would miss the rest of the season, a huge blow for the Heat who were only 2 games back in the wildcard race.

Other Notes

The Bandits continued to drop, but only slowly, and still held an 11-game lead in the Australian.

The Metros faltered after trading Tim Miller, while the Roos improved. Auckland still held the lead in the NSWNZ going into February, but only by 1 game. 6 games back, the Fury were still fighting hard for a spot in the post-season.

Axel Stennings continued his career year, as did Terrence Pi.

2027/2028 Season - February

2027/2028 Season - February

Notable Performances

6 Feb: Brendon Vernon of the Aces threw a 4-hit, 1-walk shutout as Melbourne beat the Aces 5-0.

7 Feb: Baden Binns led the Roos to a 14-0 victory over the Blue Sox in a spite-filled game (see Other Notes, below). He gave up only 5 hits and struck out 5 to take his season record to 14-5.

11 Feb: Jayden Floyd threw a superb 1-hit shutout as the Thunder destroyed the Blue Sox 19-0. He walked 1 and struck out 7.

20 Feb: Tye Lightfoot, 26 y/o LF for the Cavalry, hit in his 20th straight game. His stat-line for the year read .270/.300/.408, 10HR. His hit streak ended the next day.

24 Feb: Another Cavalry player manufactured a 20-game hit streak. This time it was Marcello Caffyn. He was hitting .282 at the time, with 20HR. He went hitless the next day.

28 Feb: Terence Pi picked up win number 20 for the season.

Notable Injuries

5 Feb: Mike Millar (.320/.399/.396 from 69 games) would be out for up to 7 weeks with a herniated disc. The injury was his third significant one of the 2027 campaign.

21 Feb: 35 y/o Aces pitcher Carlo Browne, who'd found himself in the bullpen of late, partially tore his labrum and would be out for the rest of the season. He'd be allowed to resume throwing sometime in July.

Month Awards

Rookie of the Month: Venom 1B Vic Baxter. The 24 y/o was 24-91 in the month, hitting .264/.306/.571 with 8HR.

Hurler of the Month: Aces SP Damian Neill. 4-0 (12-11 on the season), 2.08 ERA.

Slugger of the Month: Benjamin Beamish. The Metros 3B put up great numbers, going 37-102 with 8HR and a stat-line of .363/.412/.647

Other Notes

7 Feb: Joel Grimes, now at the Roos after getting claimed off waivers, got into a full-on punching match with Blue Sox reliever Dylan Filby after Filby beaned him. At one point, as both fell to the ground locked in a fighter's embrace, Grimes was heard shouting, "I'll keep 'em off ya, Sarge." Both players were suspended for 9 games. The Roos won the game 14-0.

23 Feb: The Prospects fired manager Ivan Spooner.

#

The Bandits continued to fall down to the pack, the Aces and Cavalry surging to meet them. The Metros and Roos continued their entertaining tussle in the NSWNZ. The Fury couldn't seem to get past the 2-game barrier in the wildcard race.

Warwick won a Player of the Week award in February, but was having his worst season, hitting only .294. His XB pop was down too. In 132 games in 2027, he'd hit less doubles and HR than in 96 games in 2026. He still had the 4th best WAR in the league though, at 4.8.

Auckland 1B Kelvin Ackland had the best WAR at 5.4.

Byron Eissens took the lead over Wendell Trevelyan in the walk stakes, having notched up 105 to Trevelyan's 103 by the end of Feb.

Bandits pitchers Pi, Blanksby and Britton continued to dominate most of the pitching leaderboards.

2027/2028 Season - March

2027/2028 Season - March

Notable Performances

5 Mar: Alistair Blanksby shut the Cavalry down, giving up only 3 hits and 1 walk as the Heat won 4-0.

11 Mar: Keiran Tennant threw a 4-hit, 2-walk shutout to help the Venom beat the Cavalry 4-0.

15 Mar: The Aces, surging to be only 1 game behind the Bandits, shut out the Fury 6-0 on the back of Russell Roberts. He gave up 6 hits, 2 walks, and struck out 7.

24 Mar: Bruce Pickford goes 5-5 (including a Grand Slam) as the Bandits demolish the Venom 10-2.

Notable Injuries

2 Mar: Aces mid-season trade acquisition Steven Worsfold (.301/.351/.516 with 9HR since going across) would be out for up to a month with a herniated disc.

11 Mar: Wes Albertson strained an oblique while windsurfing. He would be out until the last day of the regular season.

Other Notes

Both pennant races got very exciting in March. The Aces pulled to within a game of the Bandits at one point, but the Bandits rallied to end the season with a 4-game margin.

The Roos had already spent most of the season nipping at the Metros heels, and they finished 1 game back, not able to find a way in front of their division rivals. The Cavalry and Fury finished 1 and 2 games out of the wildcard race.

It was the first time in several seasons an NZ-based team would play postseason ball.

Allan Lloyd won the batting title, just ahead of Wendell Baxter. Neither players would feature in the post-season. Neither would HR king Joel Guerin. Axel Stennings, who had led the HR race most of the season, would, though, if the injury he sustained on the 23rd of March wasn't too bad.

Kelvin Ackland finished with the highest WAR, though Stewart Warwick (.290/.343/.460 on the season) found himself right on Ackland's tail. Ackland was the only batter to get 200+ hits, finishing with 206.

Pi finished with 21 wins, the best ERA and the second best FIP. Terrence Tunnicliffe racked up 48 saves for Melbourne. Both Blanksby and Pi finished with a WHIP under 1.00.

2027 Division Finals - Newcastle Roos v Brisbane Bandits

2027 Division Finals - Newcastle Roos v Brisbane Bandits

Best defense (Bandits) versus the best offense (Roos). The Bandits were sweating on an injury diagnosis for their offensive lynchpin, catcher Axel Stennings, who'd hurt himself in a collision at second base 2 days before the regular season ended. He would sit out at least the first game of the series

Game 1

Right before game-time, the Bandits medical staff confirmed Stennings had fractured his finger quite badly, and would be out for 6 weeks.

Things evened up in the bottom of the first, though. Baden Binns threw a third of an inning, then left the mound clutching his arm. The blow proved too much for the Roos to cope with, and the Bandits cantered away with it 8-0. Terence Pi threw 7.1 innings, allowing only 4 hits and striking out 10. Apart from 1 Byron Eissens double, all the other 15 hits came in singles.

Game 2

The Roos couldn't fire in this one either. Fu Lao did throw 8 strong innings, allowing only 2 runs on the back of 6 hits and a walk, but 2 runs was more than enough for Brisbane. They won 2-0, Bert Blanksby throwing 8 scoreless innings, striking out 10.

Game 3

In the bottom of the ninth, behind by 3 runs and facing the prospect of losing the series in 3 games, the Roos rallied to score 4 and win 6-5.

Jason McHugh hit the first HR of the series in the 4th inning.

For the Bandits, Randy Britton threw 8 strong innings, allowing 2ER but only 4 hits, and striking out 10. However, closer Harrison Wonnocott couldn't get it done, and Stephen Donovan, his replacement, allowed the Roos to complete their marvelous comeback. Hayden Foreman allowed 3 ER (4 runs total) in his 8 innings, but it was closer Rhys Jamieson who would get an undeserved W next to his name.

Game 4

This time there would be no miracle comeback in the bottom of the 9th. The Roos still tried it to manufacture one, though, but went down 3-2. The Bandits would go to their second consecutive Championship.

Terrence Pi got the win, throwing 6 innings of 1-hit ball, that hit a solo shot from Matthew Flynn. This time the bullpen got it done, though Wonnocott continued to look wobbly on the mound, loading the bases in the bottom of the 9th on 2 hits and a walk and allowing in a run via sac fly.

The Roos found out following the game that Binns would be gone for 14 months thanks to a torn ulnar collateral ligament. While obviously devastating news for Binns, Roos management must've been looking at the 5-year extension signed in the 2026 off-season, wondering what they could do with it.

Hurler of the Series went to Terence Pi (13.1 innings, 5 hits, 3 walks, 14Ks, ERA of 0.68).

Slugger of the Series was given to Sandro Ortega (.308/.438/.462, 2 doubles).

2027 Division Finals - Melbourne Aces v Auckland Metros

2027 Division Finals - Melbourne Aces v Auckland Metros

The Metros boasted the second-best offense behind the Roos, but 3rd worst defense. The Aces were 4th & 3rd respectively. If the Aces won, the 2028 Championship would be a rematch of the 2027 event. If the Metros won, they'd have the opportunity to win their first title.

Game 1

The Aces led from start to finish to win 5-3. Simon Stobbie got the win, throwing 8 innings for 3ER. Tunnicliffe got the save.

For the Aces, RF Christos Tyson went deep, while 2B Bruce Binns did so for the Metros.

Game 2

Again, the Aces put early runs in the bank, scoring 1 each in the 2nd (a solo HR from catcher J. Cox) and 5th. Damian Neill was sublime through 6, allowing only 1 hit and 4 walks. Strangely, having only thrown 88 pitches, he was pulled in the 7th after allowing the lead-off hitter to single. Reliever Brendon 'Bugs' Vernon got through the 7th okay, but surrendered a 1-out double to Gareth Cobb in the 8th. Mitchell Galagher came on to relieve Vernon and got ahead 1-2 against Cameron Dutton. Then he threw a fastball right over the heart of the plate and Dutton didn't miss out, driving it 417 feet into the right-field bleachers to tie the game up.

The game went into extra innings, but only as far as the 10th. Gareth Cobb doubled with one out, then advanced to 3rd on a Dutton single. Kelvin Ackland hit a hard liner to second base (Ronald Buckby), who closed his glove fractionally early and watched the ball drop onto the dirt beside him. Cobb had hesitated at third, expecting the catch, but took off as soon as the error was made, diving in headfirst and beating out Buckby's throw. 3-2 victory to the Metros.

Jarrod 'Hercules' Cox hit a HR for the Aces. Todd Thompson, who'd moved back from the starting rotation into the bullpen for the series, got the win, throwing 3 strong innings, allowing only 2 walks and striking out 3.

Game 3

Top of the 9th, Aces leading 4-2, and closer extraordinaire Terrence Tunnicliffe couldn't get it done, Russell Wheeler, Bruce Binns and Gareth Cobb this time conspiring to score twice and tie the game up. Top of the 10th and an Ashley Spargo double scored Thwaites and Beamish to give the Metros a 2-run buffer. Sean Morrow retired the Aces on 8 pitches, and the Metros win 6-4.

Game 4

This time the Metros led from the top of the 1st, and wouldn't give the lead up, fighting their way to a 6-3 victory and a spot at the 2027 Championship Breakfast.

James Thwaites hit a 2-run HR for Auckland, Christos Tyson a 2-run blast for the Aces. Stobbie allowed 6 runs in 4.1 innings. Lance Peet threw 6.1 innings for the win, the Metros bullpen again working together as a unit to shut the Aces down.

Hurler of the Series went to Todd Thompson. He threw 4.2 innings, allowing only 2 hits and 2 walks, striking out 8 for a 1-0 record.

Sean Morrow was also strong, throwing 3 hitless innings (1 walk) to chalk up a win and save.

Slugger of the Series was awarded to Gareth Cobb, who was 8-17 across the series, with a .471/.526/.588 stat-line and several pivotal hits.
