Nicknames are annoying. I wish I could disable them.

Yes, I know you can empty out the nickname file, but if you're like me and you do a lot of importing and exporting of things, they can still creep in (e.g., I imported a template into my current league, and with it came the nicknames), and in historical leagues they are unavoidable unless you delete them from the master file.

It's not that having players have nicknames is annoying. It's the fact that they're totally random and senseless. Sure, I can come up with some mental workaround for why my little speedster is nicknamed Big Daddy, or why three guys in the same draft are all nicknamed Sabertooth, or why a guy in my Japanese league is nicknamed Scuttlebutt. But these things happen too much.

I find myself really wishing I could just tell the game not to assign nicknames at all. Just a little checkbox or something.

If nicknames are going to work right, there are a few things that need to change. A few examples:

• Most guys don't begin their careers with nicknames. They are acquired, bestowed upon them by broadcasters. So while there may be a few who show up in drafts here and there with nicknames, for the most part, they should come later.
• Nicknames that are based on characteristics of players (e.g., Rocket, Black Hole) should be matched to particular types of players.
• Some players acquire nicknames based on their nationality or where they come from (e.g., Swede, the Flying Dutchman).

This is probably more attention than nicknames deserve, so I'd just like to be able to turn them off as they are.

Some of that sort of thing (and indeed a small speedster called "Big Daddy") can be rationalised as ironic nicknaming (most famous example is probably "Little John" from the Robin Hood stories).

I do agree that nicknames do need to changed in some way though. Perhaps by using XML instead of a txt file and having nicknames be based on certain characteristics (and some on irony, because that's realistic)

They weren't so bad until this version, when the MLB Quickstart began including all of the foreign leagues. Now that it does, you get ridiculous, mismatched and inappropriate American nicknames that you can't turn off being assigned to foreign players in foreign leagues and it's just absolutely annoying. And it kills immersion.

OOTP needs a switch to turn nicknames off.

ctorg, great post, particularly these bullet points, and in particular the first one. I sneer at high school players in the draft with nicknames like "Big Kahuna."

When it comes to nicknames, it's best to manually bestow them according to these criteria.

I like nick names when they make sense but my Rookie RF had the name dump truck it gets weird, and now a days fans bases help out with names these days like Squints because the nickname four eyes is a insult.

I know the developers mean well with nicknames, but just to look into the nick_names.txt file for a page or two reinforces them as truly dumb if they are just assigned randomly and not according to ctorg's principles above. Take a look for yourself:

Nicknames suck--stupid little immersion breakers. I just delete them now....over and over and over. The way I look at it is if a guy gets a nickname it's because I gave it to him not some dumb random number generator.

It didn't work out because he really wasn't a beast. Go figure. We think that our premature nickname may have cost him his career. The pressure was more than he could bear.

I couldn't agree more about nicknames. I feel forced to play in Commish mode so I can delete nicknames as I see them. I hate having to do this.

I'm able to avoid looking at a player's true ratings in the editor so that's not a problem. But I think I've offered out a contract or two that sent me over budget (which wouldn't have been allowed in normal mode) and that IS a problem. Because Commish mode allows this and doesn't seem to warn when this is happening, I'm cheating and I hate that!

And all because of those dumb nicknames!

Here's the kicker: The ease in which an option could be programmed.

NICKNAME=0 Skip create nickname function
NICKNAME=1 Run create nickname function

Jeez!

My problem is a little different than yours. You were cool if there was at least a work-around. Me? That's not good enough. The idea is so dumb and it was so poorly implemented that it should be off by default. Not the other way around. People who want nicknames should have to deal with the work-arounds.
