C Dennis Webb (25-L) was activated from the Disabled List. He will sit on the bench and be a pinch-hitter for a while, at least until Dave Benya cools off.

Portland Beavers (16-7 .696 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Oakland Oaks (10-15 .400 7 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Frank Martin (27-R 2-2 3.48) vs. OAK: Johnny White (30-R 2-2 2.43) Rookie

White is a 30 year rookie, who is pitching better than he has any right to so far. We have never faced him.

Martin now is already the only pitcher currently in our rotation who was there last year. He has lost his last two starts, but only gave up 3 earned runs total in both games. Last time out, he only allowed 2 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings, but lost, 2 to 0.

8: C Paul Lyons (34-R .238-42-0-2-.551)
9: P Johnny White (30-R .111-9-0-0-.222) Rookie

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Oakland Coliseum
Weather: 57 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 12 MPH wind blowing out to left.
Attendance: 25,036

Top of the First:

Paul Bouvet lines out to 1st. Dave Benya grounds out to 2nd. Woody Griesbach grounds one up the middle, but SS Henry Rangel makes a great play to get him out.

Bottom of the First:
Glenn Rogers lines one down the first base line and Jeff Austin snares it! Great play! Henry Rangel grounds out to short. Dick Hoagland flies out to center! 1-2-3!

Top of the Fifth:
With 1 out, Omar Flores knocks a double down the left field line, his first Major League hit! He steals 3rd! Can Eddie Thomas make contact? He can! He grounds out to 2nd and Flores scores! 1 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the Fifth:

The Oaks do not have a hit, but then Steve Stevenson comes up with 2 outs and knocks one over the fence in left. The wind helped that one get out... Tie game: 1 to 1.

Top of the Eighth:
Frank Martin has only given the Oaks that 1 hit, the home run, but Johnny White has only given us 3 through seven. PH Tom Borden (30-L) leads off with our fourth, a single to left. P Frank Martin is allowed to bat to bunt him over and he does. They walk Paul Bouvet intentionally. Dave Benya lines a 3-2 pitch to left for a hit and Borden heads home from 2nd....he and the ball arrive at about the same time, but he gets in their with a head first slide! 2 to 1, Beavers! I keep telling them not to go head first, but they won't listen... Woody Griesbach then gets beaned to load the bases up with 1 out. The first pitch to Jeff Austin is in the dirt and past the catcher for a wild pitch and Bouvet scores! 3 to 1, Beavers! Austin grounds out to 2nd and Benya scores. 4 to 1, Beavers. Jeff Schottler flies out to left. We would have a great offense if he and Jeff Austin would start hitting...

Won - 4 to 1

We had 7 hits and made 1 error
Oakland had 3 hits and made no errors.

Frank Martin gave them their 2nd and 3rd hits with 2 outs in the ninth...

Frank Martin (W 3-2) went 9 innings (CG), allowed 1 run, 3 hits, 1 home run, no walks (!) and struck out 3. At bat, he drew a walk.

Johnny White (L 2-3) went 8 innings, gave us 4 runs, 5 hits, 3 walks (1 INT), 1 HB and struck out 2. He threw a WP.

3B Omar Flores had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. PH Tom Borden had a hit and scored a run. SS Dave Lesley had a hit in his only AB.

Portland Beavers (17-7 .708 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Oakland Oaks (10-16 .385 8 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: Don Panighetti (25-L 2-0 1.20) All-Star vs. OAK: Les Clements (27-R 2-1 2.11)

Clements has been awesome in his 3 starts this year, but was 6-12 with a 5.35 ERA last season with 20 HR allowed in 146.1 IP. He has not allowed a home run this season. We beat him both times we faced him last season and hit him pretty well.

Panighetti is now 2nd in the PCL in ERA. His last start was the worst he has had in 4 outings this year and he allowed 2 runs in 7 IP.

7: RF Roger Crandall (28-L .188-64-1-6-.571)
8: CF Bob Waln (34-R .160-81-1-7-.491)
9: P Les Clements (27-R .375-8-0-1-.750)

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: The Oakland Coliseum
Weather: 61 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 21 MPH wind blowing out to left.
Attendance: 22,993

Top of the First:
Paul Bouvet grounds out to 3rd. Dave Benya hits a liner that SS Henry Rangel spears in a nice play. Woody Griesbach pokes a hit to right center. He steals 2nd. Jeff Austin swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses...

Bottom of the First:

Glenn Rodgers leads off with a double to right center. Henry Rangel grounds a hit past SS Eddie Thomas and Rodgers scores easily. 1 to 0, Oaks. Rangel steals 2nd. Steve Stevenson grounds out to short. Norm Wynne swings at a 3-2 pitch and lines out to center. Dave Benya lets a ball get by him for a passed ball and Rangel goes to 3rd. That is Benya's 3rd one already. Last year, he and Phil Parker, who both caught a lot less than Dennis Webb, led the team with 3 each. Webb only had 1. Dick Hoagland lines out to center.

Top of the Second:

With 2 outs, Omar Flores lines a hit to right, steals 2nd and goes to 3rd when C Don Stokes throws the ball away and scores on a hit up the middle by Eddie Thomas! Tie game: 1 to 1.

Bottom of the Second:
With 1 out, Roger Crandall singles and goes to 2nd on a wild pitch. Bob Waln doubles to center and Crandall scores. 2 to 1, Oaks. That's all they get.

Top of the Seventh:
Jeff Austin leads off with a hit. With 1 out, Tony Casarez grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-4, and then steals 2nd. Omar Flores lines a hit to center and Casarez scores to tie the game at 2!

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Bruce Stevenson (37-R), their closer since the injury to Tomas Cavazos (25-R). 1-0 with 1 SV and a 2.57 ERA. Last year, he had 32 SV and a 2.33 ERA for Pittsburgh. 3-4-5 hitters up for us. With 1 out, Jeff Austin grounds a harmless roller to short, but Henry Rangel boots it. Austin tries to steal, but new C Paul Lyons has a pitchout on and Austin is a dead duck... Jeff Schottler strikes out looking.... I should have traded him instead of Perry Templet...

Bottom of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Don Schmidt (27-R), beginning his 2nd inning of work. They go down in order with 2 strikeouts!

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
We go down in order.

Bottom of the Tenth:
Top of their order. With 2 outs, Steve Stevenson, the one real dangerous hitter they have, sends one to deep center, but Jeff Schottler catches it at the wall!

Top of the Eleventh:

New Pitcher: Glenn Brown (32-R), pitching with a sore back. PH Dennis Webb (25-L), fresh off the DL, lines a 2-2 pitch to left for a hit! He tries to steal....to no avail... Paul Bouvet lines a hard one to right for a hit. He also tries to steal, but he makes it! On the next pitch, he steals 3rd! Dave Benya, with a 2-0 count now. Just make contact!! The count goes to full and then he swings at the payoff pitch and comes up empty... 2 outs. Woody Griesbach grounds a hit up the middle and Bouvet scores! 3 to 2, Beavers! Woody steals 2nd! Jeff Austin strikes out looking.... Believe me, I tried to trade for a good first baseman....

Bottom of the Eleventh:

New Pitcher: Jorge Reyna (32-R). With 1 out, Dick Hoagland grounds a hit past SS Eddie Thomas. PH Neil Rivers (25-S) is announced. Call to the Bullpen: Mitch Dowdell (25-L), making his Beaver debut. If he is a dud, let's find out right away. Rivers grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. 2 outs. PH Jackie Roberts (32-R) is sent up. The next batter is a left and they have 1 more bat on the bench, a righty, so we will let Dowdell face Roberts. The count goes to 3-2, and the payoff pitch is high and tight for ball 4. Dave Russell is up and they do not pinch hit, so Dowdell gets 1 more batter, the first lefty he will face as a Beaver. Can he do better than Jerry Wilhelm and Jamie Cleveland did? Russell swings at a 1-0 pitch and hits a lazy fly ball to left and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

Won - 3 to 2 in 11 innings

Sweep!

We had 9 hits and made 1 error
Oakland had 7 hits and made 2 errors

Don Panighetti went 6.2 innings, allowed 2 runs, 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. He threw a WP.
LHP Lou Hertzberg faced 1 batter and retired him.
RHP Don Schmidt (W 3-0) went 3 perfect innings and struck out 2. He has taken over our Bullpen Ace role.
RHP Jorge Reyna (H 2) faced 2 batters and got 1 out and allowed 1 hit. 2 pitches thrown.
LHP Mitch Dowdell (SV 1), in his Beaver debut, got the last 2 outs and allowed 1 walk.

Les Clements went 8 innings, gave us 2 runs (1 earned), 6 hits, no walks and struck out 6.
Glenn Brown (L 2-1) went 1 inning, gave us 1 run, 3 hits and struck out 2.

RF Woody Griesbach had 2 hits, stole 2 bases and had an RBI. 3B Omar Flores had 2 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. PH Dennis Webb had a hit, but then promptly got caught stealing. We stole 6 bases in the game and got caught 3 times. That's a lot of running.

Friday, May 3, Year II

We are in Houston to play the Astros a 3 game series over the weekend. They just lost 2 to Dallas here. We beat them 2 of 3 in Portland, April 5-7. Their best hitter, Bob Trigg, who won the PCL Batting Title last year, is on the DL. They are 10th in the PCL in scoring with 3.29 runs per game (Portland is 5th and falling with 4.04). They are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.88 per game (Portland is #1 with 2.88). Their pitchers lead the League in SO, but also lead in walks and they have committed the most errors in the PCL (27 in 24 G). We are tied for the fewest with Dallas (14), but we have played 1 more game than them.

Portland Beavers (18-7 .720 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Houston Astros (8-16 .333 9 GB in 5th place in the PCL East)

POR: Brian Hagans (26-R 2-1 1.82) Rookie vs. HOU: Pat Porter (25-R 2-2 3.86)

Porter is their #1 starter. He was the #22 prospect in Baseball before his rookie season last year. He went 10-14 with a 3.97 ERA. His start was the one we lost in Portland back in April. He went 9 innings and only gave us 1 run, but they had to go to extra innings to beat us.

After 2 great outings to begin his Major League career as a starting pitcher, Hagans gave up 4 runs in 5.1 IP last time out. He did strike out 7, though, without walking a batter.

8: SS Russ Mitchell (32-R .294-85-0-5-.701)
9: P Pat Porter (25-R .300-10-0-2-.764)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Astrodome
Weather: Indoors
Attendance: 13,529

Top of the First:
Paul Bouvet strikes out... He is not off to a blazing start as a Beaver... Dave Benya grounds out to 1st, 3-1. Woody Griesbach grounds out to short.

Bottom of the First:
Bob Webster swings at the first pitch and flies out to deep center. Dave Longman doubles to right center, but hurts himself sliding into 2nd. Pinch-runner: Rob Mullins (29-L), who my pet 3 legged box turtle could run rings around. Tony Baez strikes out! Rick Dill swings at the first pitch and pops one out to shallow left and 2B Paul Bouvet makes the catch!

Bottom of the Third:
Russ Mitchell leads off with a line drive hit to right center, goes to 2nd on a bunt by P Pat Porter and scores on a 2 out hit by RF Danny Matthew (36-R). Matthew goes to 2nd when LF Tony Casarez misplays the ball for his first Major League error... 1 to 0, Astros. Tony Baez grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Don Mosley singles, steals 2nd and goes to 3rd on a ground out. Dick Becker takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and then Russ Mitchell singles and Mosley scores. 2 to 0, Astros. P Pat Porter lines a hit to center to load the bases up and we get the Bullpen stirring. Bob Webster swings at the first pitch and flies out to shallow center.

Top of the Sixth:
Paul Bouvet leads off with an infield hit. With 1 out, Woody Griesbach grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4. Jeff Austin then hits his second double of the day and Griesbach scores from 1st! 2 to 1, Astros. Jeff Schottler strikes out...

Bottom of the Sixth:
The Astros waste no time getting that run back as Don Mosley leads off with a 430 foot blast to left, his first home run of the season. 3 to 1, Astros.

Top of the Seventh:
The Astros must be feeling sorry for our sorry offense, because they give us a run for free. Tony Casarez leads off with a full count walk. Omar Flores grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6. With 2 outs, PH Gordon Saunderson (27-L) reached on a throwing error by SS Russ Mitchell and then Flores scores on a wild pitch. 3 to 2, Astros. Paul Bouvet up and he can tie the game with a hit, but pops out to short....

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (27-R). Bob Webster leads off with a triple to center... But the next 3 go down and no run scores!

Bottom of the Eighth:
Don Mosley, who came into the game with a .385 OPS, leads off with a double. He homered earlier. We walk Gary Warner intentionally, for some reason... With 2 outs, they send a lefty in to pinch-hit: Bill Henning (30-L), so we bring in our new ace lefty, Mitch Dowdell (25-L), who promptly gives up a hit to center... Mosley heads home, but Jeff Schottler throws him out!!

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Phil DeNeui (27-R), their closer. 1-2 with a 3.95 ERA and 4 SV. He got the one win against us that the Astros had before today. Omar Flores grounds out to short. Dave Lesley strikes out... PH Tom Borden (30-L) grounds a 2-2 pitch to right for a hit! Paul Bouvet again has a chance to be a hero... He takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Dave Benya doubles to left center! Bordon scores to tie the game and Bouvet tries to score from 1st....the throw is there and he slides in headfirst....safe!!! 4 to 3, Beavers!!! Dave Benya!!! Who cares about a few passed balls? Woody Griesbach nails a line drive towards 3rd, but Rick Dill makes a nice catch.

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Jorge Reyna (32-R). Eddie Thomas is in to play short. Bob Webster, who tripled his last time up, grounds a single up the middle. PH Mike Cunningham (28-L) doubles to right.... Webster stops at 3rd. Tony Baez, hitting under .200 for the second year in a row, grounds a hit up the middle and Webster scores to tie the game at 4. Cunningham stops at 3rd. With the infield in, Rick Dill grounds out to short and Baez moves over to 2nd and Cunningham holds at 3rd. 1 out. Don Mosley, who came into the game hitting .141 in 85 AB, but already has 3 hits with a double and a home run today is up. He swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit up the middle and that's the game....

Okay, this is Christy the PA and I am writing what he dictates to me, because he has broken his hand. He says to write that he tripped and fell, but he really punched a concrete wall. Do you have an old game that I can look at and see the way you format this stuff? Thanks.

Lost - 5 to 4

We had 10 hits and made 1 error
Houston had 15 hits and made 1 error

Brian Hagans went 6 innings, allowed 3 runs, 8 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 4.
RHP Barry Chapman pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits, 1 walk (INT) and struck out 1.
LHP Mike Dowdell faced 1 batter and gave up a hit, but got an out when a runner was thrown out at the plate. He was lucky...I am not writing that 'B' word.
RHP Jorge Reyna (L 1-1 BS 2) faced 5 batters and got 1 out... He allowed 2 runs and 4 hits.

Pat Porter went 8 innings, gave us 2 runs (1 earned), 8 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. He threw a WP. At bat, he had a hit.
RHP Phil DeNeui (W 2-2 BS 1)...what's with all the BS?...pitched 1 inning, gave us 2 runs, 2 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1.

C Dave Benya had 2 hits with a double and 2 RBI. 1B Jeff Austin hit 2 doubles and had an RBI. I am glad to see him get some good hits. CF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits and stole a base. PH Tom Borden had a hit and scored a run.

For the Astros, CF Don Mosley had 4 hits with a double and his 1st home run of the season, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI, including the game winner. He had 12 hits for the whole season before today.

The Astros announced that Dave Longman had a sprained thumb that should take about a week to heal, but he should be able to play with the injury.

Is that it? That's it. See you tomorrow! Oh, there's no reason to talk like that....

Portland Beavers (18-8 .692 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Houston Astros (9-16 .360 9 GB in 5th place in the PCL East)

POR: Angel Gaspar (23-R Beaver debut) Rookie vs. HOU: Dave Ross (26-R 1-0 0.00)

Ross was 4-5 with a 3.23 ERA in 15 starts last year. 97.2 IP with 56 BB and 80 SO. He has only had 1 start this season, but it was a 4 hit shutout with 1 walk and 9 SO. We were 1-1 against him last year. In the one he won, he shut us out for 8 innings, gave us 5 hits, 1 walk and struck out 10. We scored 6 runs in 5.2 innings in the other.

Gaspar is making his Beaver debut today and I am braced for disaster. I can't break my hand because it is already broken! He was 4-1 with a 3.15 ERA for the Giants this season with only 8 BB and 30 SO in 37.1 IP. 1 HR. Last year he walked 4.3 per 9 in AAA and gave up 13 HR on 197.2 IP, which is a lot for AAA.

9: P Angel Gaspar (23-R Beaver debut) Rookie

You might wonder where all of our new hitters are. Well, they are on the bench due to a silly superstition of Christy the PA's. She has a theory as to why we lost yesterday's game in such dramatic fashion and I am going along with it....that is all I will say. I am not superstitious; I just don't like upsetting Christy. And even worse, I hate being told, "I told you so!"

Top of the First:

Tom Borden lines a 3-1 pitch past the shortstop for a hit. Dave Benya takes a 3-1 pitch for ball 4. Woody Griesbach flies out to right and Borden tags up and beats the throw to 3rd. Jeff Austin drills one to deep right, but Dave Longman and his bruised thumb catch it near the warning track and Borden trots home. 1 to 0, Beavers. 2 outs. Benya steals 2nd. Larry Sinchak lines a hit to center and Benya heads home...the tag is late! 2 to 0, Beavers! Dave Lesley lines a hit to center and Sinchak takes 3rd. Jeff Schottler grounds out to short.

Bottom of the First:
Bob Webster flies out to center. Dave Longman strikes out looking! Tony Baez grounds a hit up the middle past the diving Eddie Thomas. Rick Dill strikes out!

Top of the Second:
With 2 outs, Tom Borden singles and steals 2nd. Dave Benya then triples to the right field corner! 3 to 0, Beavers! Woody Griesbach flares one over the shortstop's head and Russ Mitchell races back, but drops the ball for an error and Benya scores! 4 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the Third:
Bob Webster beats out an infield hit. With 2 outs, Rick Dill hits a home run to left... 4 to 2, Beavers.

Bottom of the Seventh:

Russ Mitchell leads off with a hit. Pinch-hitter Bill Henning (30-L) is sent up. Call tot the Bullpen: Lou Hertzberg (31-L). Henning grounds out to 3rd and Mitchell goes to 2nd. Bob Webster singles to left center and Henning stops at 3rd. Passed Ball.... Henning scores. 4 to 3, Beavers. What is up with that? Editor's Note: Dave Dafoe has his Catcher Ability at 77 and OSA has it at 76... Both of them have him rated as our best defensive catcher. He is not supposed to be prone to passed balls.... Dave Longman hits one in front of the plate and C Dave Benya throws him out and Webster goes to 3rd. 2 outs. Tony Baez flies out to left.

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-R). PH Rob Mullins (29-L). .381 with 2 HR in 21 AB. Full count and he swings and misses! PH Mike Cunningham (28-L). .320 with 2 HR in 25 AB. Why are these guys sitting on the bench with those .500 OPS guys starting? He swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short! 2 outs. PH Gene Thomas (33-L). 0 for 5... He'll be the one... He strikes out looking and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers! Yes, I know you told me so, Christy....

Won - 4 to 3

We had 9 hits and made 1 error
Houston had 8 hits and made 1 error

Angel Gaspar (W 1-0) went 6+ innings, allowed 3 runs, 7 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out 7. He balked.
LHP Lou Hertzberg (H 1) pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 2.

LF Tom Borden, in his first start of the season, had 3 hits, stole 2 bases and scored 2 runs. C Dave Benya hit a triple, drew a walk, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. And his team record 4th passed ball in one season. 3B Larry Sinchak had 2 hits and an RBI. 2B Dave Lesley had 2 hits.

POR: Bob Grigg (24-R Major League debut) Rookie vs. HOU: John Manly (26-R 0-1 8.76)

Manly has made 4 starts and pitched 12.1 innings. We faced him once and scored 6 runs in 2.1 innings with 2 HR.

Grigg is making his Major League debut. He was 3-0 for Vancouver (AAA) with a 2.56 ERA, 10 BB and 33 SO in 31.2 IP with 1 HR.

8: SS Russ Mitchell (32-R .315-92-0-6-.733)
9: P John Manly (26-R .000-4-0-0-.200)

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: The Astrodome
Weather: Indoors
Attendance: 10,019

Top of the First:
Paul Bouvet grounds a hit up the middle and steals 2nd. Dennis Webb flies out to shallow right and Bouvet tags up and moves to 3rd! Woody Griesbach flies out to center and Bouvet scores! Love that speed! 1 to 0, Beavers! Jeff Austin takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Austin heads for second and they have a pitchout called, be he is safe anyway! C Dick Becker is a poor defender. Tony Casarez grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the First:
Bob Grigg's first four Major League pitches are out of the strike zone and Bob Webster walks. Webster tries to steal, but we have a pitchout called and he is out! It worked, but I dunno about calling a pitchout with a pitcher who has yet to throw a strike in the game.... The count goes to full on Dave Longman and he swings at the payoff pitch and grounds out to short. Tony Baez flies out to right!

Top of the Second:

Omar Flores and Barry Tucker both walk and Eddie Thomas singles to load the bases up for P Bob Grigg's first Major League AB. He hit .257 over the last 2 years in the minors, but he is now officially a .000 hitter in the Majors as he strikes out. The first pitch to Paul Bouvet is past the catcher for a wild pitch and Flores scores! 2 to 0, Beavers! Bouvet then lines a 3-1 pitch to right and Tucker scores! 3 to 0, Beavers! Bouvet gets thrown out stealing.... I should have known not to call C Dick Becker a poor defender.... Dennis Webb grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Through 4 innings, Becker has thrown out 3 base stealers... He has a weak arm and P John Manly stinks at holding runners...

Bottom of the Fourth:

Tony Baez and Rick Dill lead off with back-to-back doubles. 3 to 1, Beavers. Don Mosley grounds out to 2nd and Dill goes to 3rd. Gary Warner lines out to center and Barry Tucker doubles Dill off at 3rd!

Top of the Sixth:

We quit hitting off of Manly... With 1 out, Dave Longman and his sprained thumb single and steal 2nd. With 2 outs, Rick Dill singles him home. 3 to 2, Beavers. Call to the Bullpen: Jorge Reyna (32-R). Larry Sinchak comes in to play 3rd in a double switch. Full count to Don Mosley and he takes ball 4. Gary Warner grounds out to 3rd!

Bottom of the Seventh:
After Dick Becker strikes out, Russ Mitchell singles and PH Bill Henning (30-L) hits a home run to right... 4 to 3, Astros. Jorge Reyna is crap....

Bottom of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (27-R). With 1 out, Don Mosley singles and steals 2nd. We walk Gary Warner intentionally.... Dick Becker strikes out. 2 down. Russ Mitchell singles to right and Mosley scores... 5 to 3, Astros. Chapman, who was so awesome last year, has turned to mush... 16 H in 12 IP....

Lost - 5 to 3

We had 7 hits and made no errors
Houston had 11 hits and made no errors

Bob Grigg went 5.2 innings, allowed 2 runs, 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out no one.
RHP Jorge Reyna (L 1-2 BS 3) went 1.1 innings, allowed 2 runs, 3 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk (INT) and struck out 1.
RHP Barry Chapman pitched 1 inning, allowed 1 run, 2 hits, 1 walk (INT) and struck out 1.

John Manly went 6 innings, gave us 3 runs, 4 hits, 5 walks and struck out 1. He threw a WP. At bat, he had their 1st hit.
RHP Barry Haneke (W 3-1_ pitched 1 scoreless inning and gave us 2 hits.
Phil DeNeui (SV 5) pitched a perfect 9th with 1 strikeout.

2B Paul Bouvet had 3 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. 1B Jeff Austin went 2 for 2 with 2 walks. 3B Larry Sinchak went 1 for 2.

Random Fact of Week: The Washington Senators have won 7 in a row and are only a half game out of first in the NL East. They will have the first pick in the drat this year because they had the worst record in Baseball last season. Their record is not built on lucky 1 run wins, either. They are 2nd in scoring runs and 4th in fewest allowed in the National League. Their run differential is the 2nd best in the NL to the Phillies. And better than ours.... We are +2 on our Pythagorean projection and are 8-2 in 1 run games and 3-1 om extra innings.

Dave Dafoe delivered his pre-draft report this morning, 29 days before the draft. We are picking dead last this year, so I do not even care that he is a day late. His top-rated player is OF Jake Nichols (17-R), who the Scouting Bureau does not even rate as a first round pick. So we can probably get him, but he probably is not worth it....

We are in Denver to play the Bears a 2 game set. They won 2 of 3 here over the weekend from the Angels. We split the first two games of the season with them in Portland, both 1 run affairs. They are 4th in the PCL in scoring with 4.41 runs per game (Portland is #5 with 4 even). We are also down to 4th in HR hit and have gone 5 straight games without hitting one. The Bears are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.31 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.04). Denver has played a lot more games on the road than at home so far, which helps explain their high rating.

Portland Beavers (19-9 .679 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Denver Bears (19-10 .655 2 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East)

POR: Frank Martin (27-R 3-2 2.92) vs. DEN: Armand Baucom (30-R 1-0 3.21)

Baucom has made 2 starts, one on th road at Minnesota where he gave up 1 run in 8 IP and one at home against the Twins where he gave up 4 runs in 6 IP. Last year, he was 4-5 with a 6.22 ERA and walked more than he struck out. We have never faced him.

Martin pitched a 3 hitter the last out, but that was in Oakland.... he goes from the best pitcher's park to the worst.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
PORTLAND
1: 2B Paul Bouvet (26-R .318-22-0-2-.784) NL MVP Gold Glove
2: 3B Omar Flores (21-L .222-18-0-1-.541) Rookie
3: C Dave Benya (27-S .409-44-2-10-1.140)
4: 1B Jeff Austin (30-R .230-100-4-13-.697)
5: RF Gordon Saunderson (27-L .231-13-1-5-.769)
6: CF Jeff Schottler (25-R .192-99-3-8-.590) WS MVP
7: LF Tony Casarez (20-L .111-18-0-0-.311) Rookie
8: SS Eddie Thomas (26-R .225-80-4-17-.663)
9: P Frank Martin (27-S .000-9-0-0-.100)

DENVER

2: SS Greg Werner (27-R .308-107-1-19-.751)
3: 3B Ivan Gallegas (34-R .211-109-2-10-.671) All-Star
4: RF Yasuji Urata (25-L .330-97-3-20-.888)
5: LF John Dobosh (29-R .276-98-3-7-.806)
6: CF Mike Carpenter (31-R .293-92-3-19-.816)
7: 2B Rob Douma (28-R .257-101-2-13-.724) All-Star
8: C Antonio Garcia (25-R .167-12-0-2-.536)
9: P Armand Baucom (30-R .600-5-0-0-1.200)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Mile High Stadium
Weather: 60 F, Clear Skies, with a 9 MPH wind blowing right to left.
Attendance: 26,431

Top of the First:
Paul Bouvet lines out to center. Omar Flores lines out to left. 2 hard hit balls and nothing to show for it. Dave Benya pops out to short.

Bottom of the First:
Luis Castillo swings at the first pitch and squibs one in front of the plate and C Dave Benya throws him out. Greg Werner lines out to left. Ivan Gallegas grounds out to 3rd! 1-2-3!

Top of the Second:
Jeff Austin leads off with a double to left center and Gordon Saunderson lines a hit to left. Austin heads home....and is safe by a hair! Saunderson moves over to 2nd on the throw. 1 to 0, Beavers! Why are you risking an out, though, with no outs? Jeff Schottler draws a walk. Tony Casarez beats out an infield hit and the bases are loaded with nobody out. Eddie Thomas, of course, strikes out... as does P Frank Martin... Paul Bouvet, though, takes 4 wide ones to force in a run! 2 to 0, Beavers! Omar Flores grounds out to 3rd. We could have had a LOT more runs than that...

Bottom of the Second:

Yasuji Urata takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and the John Dobosh, who was leading the PCL in home runs last year when his season ended with an injury, triples to right... 2 to 1, Beavers. Mike Carpenter swings at a 3-2 pitch and strikes out. Rob Douma sings at a 3-2 pitch and pops out to 2nd! Antonio Garcia draws a 4 pitch walks. That brings P Armand Baucom and his .600 BA to the plate. He grounds out to short!

Top of the Third:
With 1 out, Jeff Austin reaches on a 2 base error by SS Greg Werner, but with 2 outs, he gets caught stealing.... IDIOCY!!!

Bottom of the Third:
With 1 out, Greg Werner beats out an infield hit. Ivan Gallegas singles to left center. Yasuji Urata bounces a double play ball back to the box, but P Frank Martin makes a bad throw to 2nd for an error and the bases are loaded with 1 out. John Dobosh strikes out! Mike Carpenter hits a foul ball down the right field line that RF Gordon Saunderson drops for another error... Given another chance, Carpenter fouls out to the catcher! No runs!!

Top of the Fifth:

With 1 out, Paul Bouvet grounds one down the line towards 2rd and Ivan Gallegas makes a nice play to get him out, but hurts himself. Scott Worley (27-R), a rookie, comes in to play 1st and Luis Castillo moves to 3rd.

Bottom of the Seventh:
A 2 to 1 game in the 7th, does not seem like Mile High Stadium... With 2 outs, Luis Castillo doubles to left. Call to the Bullpen: Barry Chapman (27-R). Greg Werner grounds one to the hole on the left side, but SS Dave Lesley (27-R), our much maligned shortstop, makes a diving stop and throws him out!!!

Top of the Eighth:

New Pitcher: Rick Moore (25-L). 2.33 ERA last year and 1.32 this year with 17 SO in 13.1 IP, but also 11 BB. Jeff Austin grounds out to short. PH Woody Griesbach (24-R) swings at the first pitch and fouls out to the catcher... Jeff Schottler works the count full, but then takes strike three...

Bottom of the Eighth:
Scott Worley strikes out, but Yasuji Urata grounds a hit up the middle. John Dobosh grounds into a 5-4-3 double play!!

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Gary Guise (27-R), their closer. 13 SV, no losses and a 1.08 ERA. Wally Dardick (28-L) comes in to play left in a double switch. Do not know why they switched from the lefty when Tony Casarez is up... Maybe they think THEY had the 2 to 1 lead? Casarez swings at the first pitch and flies out to right. Dave Lesley doubles down the left field line! PH Dennis Webb (25-L) strikes out... Paul Bouvet works the count full and then sends one to the wall in center for a triple and Lesley scores! 3 to 1, Beavers! Omar Flores grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher:
Don Schmidt (27-R). Full count to Mike Carpenter and the payoff pitch clips him... PH Jim Mohr (35-S) grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-4. PH Dave Bell (26-R), who is hitting .357, drills one to deep left center....it hits off the top of the wall and he ends up with a triple and Carpenter scores.... 3 to 2, Beavers. Wally Dardick, who is batting .353, swings at a 1-2 pitch and flies out to shallow right and Bell holds at 3rd! 2 outs. Luis Castillo up. Let's walk him to get to Werner, please... We do NOT walk him and he swings at an 0-1 pitch and grounds out to 2nd and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!!

Won - 3 to 2

We had 8 hits and made 2 errors
Denver had 7 hits and made 1 error

Our 6th straight game without a home run.
For the 9th straight game we have scored either 3 or 4 runs.

Frank Martin (W 4-2) went 6.2 innings, allowed 1 run, 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4.
RHP Barry Chapman (H 4) went 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.
RHP Don Schmidt (SV 4) went 1 inning, allowed 1 run, 1 hit and 1 HB.

Armand Baucom (L 1-1) went 7 innings, gave us 2 runs, 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2.

2B Paul Bouvet hit a triple, drew a walk and had 2 RBI. 3B Omar Flores had 2 hits and stole a base. 1B Jeff Austin hit a double and scored a run. RF Gordon Saunderson, in his first start of the season, had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Dave Lesley hit a double and scored a run in his only AB. We are going to give him a chance to win back the shortstop job. His fielding has been excellent so far this year, with (knock on wood ) no errors at shortstop. Eddie Thomas' early season hitting magic has faded to dust.

I do not like shaking things up either.....believe it or not.....probably not....but we had too many guys who were prominent players that I did not pick to be my boys and had traits that always irk me.....no walks and a poor SB% being two that Perry Templet had.....

And winning consistently is overrated....it gets boring real quick.....

This was my first league in a long time and I did not remember that patience is a virtue......

But winning the division this season is going to make me a LOT of money.....a real big pile and I am having daydreams of how to spend it already.........he said, with a foreshadowing twinkle in his eye, as he remembered the days of his long lost youth when the dreams of the future brought more joy and pleasure than the fulfillment of his ripened schemes.....

Baucom has made 2 starts, one on the road at Minnesota where he gave up 1 run in 8 IP and one at home against the Twins where he gave up 4 runs in 6 IP. Last year, he was 4-5 with a 6.22 ERA and walked more than he struck out. We have never faced him.

Martin pitched a 3 hitter the last time out, but that was in Oakland.... he goes from the best pitcher's park to the worst.

Antonio Garcia draws a 4 pitch walk.

No runs!! 2 hits and 2 errors an still no runs!

Top of the Fifth:
With 1 out, Paul Bouvet grounds one down the line towards 3rd and Ivan Gallegas makes a nice play to get him out, but hurts himself.

His fielding has been excellent so far this year, with (knock on wood ) no errors at short so far. Eddie Thomas' early season hitting magic has faded to dust.

The Bears report that Ivan Gallegas has a sore wrist that will bother him for about a week.

Portland Beavers (20-9 .690 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Denver Bears (19-11 .633 2 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East)

POR: Don Panighetti (25-L 2-0 1.47) All-Star vs. DEN: Bill Del Negro (33-R 0-0 3.86)

Del Negro has not started a game in the past 2 years, but scheduled started Marty Roessler (23-R), April's PCL Rookie of the Month, was a late scratch with a sore shoulder. Del Negro is a reliever by trade and this will be only his 2nd appearance of the season. Last year, he had a 4.61 ERA in 27.1 IP.

I hate to pitch Panighetti in Mile High...lefties are not welcome there. But what can we do? Call up poor Lonny Tomski and feed him to the wolves? Panighetti is leading the PCL in ERA now, but probably not after this game...

1: CF Mike Carpenter (31-R .284-95-3-19-.797) 4 for 9 with 1 HR vs Panighetti
2: SS Greg Werner (27-R .309-110-1-19-.754) 2 for 3

7: C Bob Pritchett (32-L .217-92-1-13-.608)
8: 2B Rob Douma (28-R .250-104-2-13-.704) All-Star
9: P Bill Del Negro (33-R Season debut at the plate)

The top 4 in their order are 11 for 23 (.478) with 3 HR lifetime vs Panighetti....this could get ugly real fast...

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: Mile High Stadium
Weather: 59 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from left.
Attendance: 25,649

Top of the First:
Paul Bouvet grounds a hit up the middle. Omar Flores lines a hit to left. Dave Benya swings at the first pitch and flies out to right and Bouvet tags up and beats the throw to 3rd. Jeff Austin swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 2nd and Bouvet scores and Flores goes to 2nd. 1 to 0, Beavers! A wild pitch sends Flores to 3rd. Jeff Schottler pops out to 1st.... The World Series MVP is getting close to being shipped to Vancouver....

Bottom of the First:
Alright, how bad is this going to be? Mike Carpenter swings at the first pitch and flies out to right. Greg Werner, 3rd in the PCL in RBI, grounds out to 2nd. Yasuji Urata lines a hit to left. Full count to Ivan Gallegas and he swings and homers to left... 2 to 1, Bears. Gallegas is now 5 for 10 with 3 HR vs Panighetti.... John Dobosh draws a walk and steals 2nd. Dave Bell homers to right... 4 to 1, Bears. How bad? Really bad... The Bullpen is up. I will never pitch a lefty in this place again. Bob Pritchett walks. Rob Douma grounds out to 3rd.

Top of the Second:
We go down in order against this bum.... Okay, if you have other obligations, I would not blame you for seeing to them now...

Lost - 7 to 3

We had 6 hits and made 1 error
Denver had 8 hits and made 1 error

No home runs for the 7th game in a row.
3 or 4 runs scored for the 10th straight game.

6 hits off a bum reliever pressed into starting duty....

Don Panighetti (L 2-1) went 2 innings, allowed 4 runs, 4 hits, 2 home runs, 3 walks and struck out no one. HE does NOT lead the PCL in ERA anymore and is not even in the top 10. In fact, he does not even lead the Beavers anymore.
RHP Jorge Reyna went 4 innings, allowed 3 runs (2 earned), 2 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 2.
LHP Lou Hertzberg pitched 2 scoreless innings and allowed 2 hits.

Bill Del Negro (W 1-0) went 5 innings, gave us 2 runs, 5 hits, no walks and struck out 1.
RHP Gordon DeLong (SV 1) went 4 innings, gave us 1 unearned run, 2 hit, 2 walks and struck out 1.

1B Jeff Austin his a double, scored a run and had an RBI. PH Tom Borden had a hit and stole a base. PH Gordon Saunderson drew a walk.

All these promising young hitters are not hitting a lick....

We had 3 hits. SS Dave Lesley had 2 of them with a double and had our RBI.

The Dallas Eagles are in town to play 3 games over the weekend. It is the fist time we have met our foes from last year's PCL Championship Series this season. We won the season series against them 8-4 last year, in addition to winning the PCL Championship, 4 games to 3. They just beat the Padres 2 games at home and are 20-4 in their last 24 games.... They are 2nd in the PCL in scoring with 4.65 runs per game (Portland is 8th with 3.81). The Eagles are last in HR with 13, but lead the league in BA (.275) and OBP (.342). They have overtaken us for the first spot on the list of fewest runs allowed with 3.06 per game (Portland us now #2 with 3.16).

Dallas Eagles (22-9 .710 in 1st place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (20-12 .625 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DAL: Ralph Hoskins (26-R 4-2 2.72) vs. POR: Bob Grigg (24-R 0-0 3.18) Rookie

We faced Hoskins 3 times last year and whipped up on him every time, but he appears to be a transformed pitcher this season. As a rookie last year, he was 6-18 with a 5.69 ERA between New York and Dallas.

Grigg will be making his 2nd Major League start. In his first, he pitched acceptably, but did not show much confidence. He did not strike out a batter in 5.2 inning, but only allowed 2 runs.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
DALLAS
1: RF Chris Hagerty (25-L .306-108-1-12-.738)
2: CF Bob Holder (27-R .303-122-2-16-.846)
3: 2B Edwin Juan (25-R .217-69-1-6-.565)
4: LF Steve DeMuro (30-L .352-122-2-16-.904) All-Star Ate us alive last year.
5: 3B Qian Duan (30-R .233-90-2-11-.650)
6: 1B Jim Bakutis (27-S .227-22-1-4-.788)
7: C Dan Kaczmarek (29-R .000-3-0-0-.000) All-Star
8: SS Gill Blair (29-R .211-90-1-14-.612) All-Star
9: P Ralph Hoskins (26-R .545-11-0-4-1.182)

Kaczmarek is only playing in his 2nd game of the season because of an injury in Spring Training.

PORTLAND
1: 2B Paul Bouvet (26-R .270-37-0-5-.736) NL MVP Gold Glove
2: 3B Omar Flores (21-L .226-31-0-1-.508) Rookie
3: SS Dave Lesley (27-R .344-32-0-1-.806)
4: C Dave Benya (27-S .339-56-2-11-.936)
5: 1B Larry Sinchak (31-R .375-24-0-2-.817)
6: LF Tony Casarez (20-L .226-31-0-0-.559) Rookie
7: RF Woody Griesbach (24-R .200-55-1-4-.583) Rookie
8: CF Jeff Schottler (25-R .179-112-3-9-.560) WS MVP
9: P Bob Grigg (24-R .000-2-0-0-.000) Rookie

You know, I was contemplating sending Christy the PA out to buy a train ticket for Jeff Schottler, but who would we play in center in his stead? We have no one else who is worth a plug nickel who can play center competently.... I was very rash in sending Perry Templet away....bad GM!

These kids are going to start hitting sooner or later.....I just hope it is sooner...

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 18,426

Top of the First:
Chris Hagerty works the count full and then grounds out to short. Bob Holder swings at the first pitch and pokes a soft hit to center. He steals 2nd. Edwin Juan strikes out looking! The first Major League strikeout for P Bob Grigg! Full count to Steve DeMuro, who tore us up last season, and he swings and hits a lazy fly ball to center!

Bottom of the First:
Paul Bouvet works the count full then lines a hard one to right right to the right fielder. Omar Flores pops out to short. Dave Lesley grounds out to 2nd.

Top of the Second:

With 1 out, Jim Bakutis grounds a hit to right and goes to 2nd on a wild pitch. Dan Kaczmarek grounds his first hit of the year up the middle and Bakutis goes to 3rd. Another wild pitch from the frazzled rookie and a run is in... 1 to 0, Eagles. Full count to Gill Blair and he grounds out to 3rd. P Ralph Hoskins, batting .545, strike out looking!

9 up, 9 down, the first time through the order for us....

12 up, 12 down....

With 2 outs in the 5th, Tony Casarez singles for our first base runner of the day.

Bottom of the Sixth:
P Bob Grigg leads off with a 4 pitch walk and goes to 2nd on a wild pitch. With 1 out, a balk sends him to 3rd. Omar Flores lines out to deep left and Grigg trots home to tie the game at 1!

Bottom of the Seventh:
Dave Benya leads off with a walk and Larry Sinchak lines a 3-2 pitch to right for a hit. But the 3 young outfielders, Casarez, Griesbach and Schottler all come up empty....

Top of the Eighth:
P Ralph Hoskins is allowed to hit and he flies out to center, but P Bob Grigg calls the trainer out and mopes to the dugout... New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (27-R). Barry Tucker (29-L) goes in to play center in a double switch. With 2 outs, Bob Holder singles to right, but C Dave Benya throws him out stealing!

Bottom of the Eighth:
Barry Tucker reaches on an error by 3B Qian Duan and steals 2nd. Paul Bouvet needs to start hitting soon. I can excuse the youngsters, but he won the batting title last year and was hitting .365 this year before we traded for him. At this moment, his BA as a Beaver is .250... Tucker steals 3rd! Bouvet lines a hit to left over the drawn in infield and Tucker scores! 2 to 1, Beavers! Omar Flores bunts Bouvet to 2nd. Dave Lesley grounds a hit to right and Bouvet heads home, but gets thrown out by RF Chris Hagerty....

Top of the Ninth:
PH Dick Gottesman (31-L). 2 for 15, but with a HR. Hit .276 last year. He grounds out to short. Steve DeMuro grounds a 3-2 pitch up the middle for a hit. Qian Duan grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. 2 outs. Jim Bakutis strikes out looking and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!

Won - 2 to 1

We had 5 hits and made 1 error
Dallas had 7 hits and made 1 error

Our team record streak of homerless games continues and reaches 10....

Bob Grigg went 7.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 5 hits, 1 walk (INT) and struck out 3. He threw 2 WP. At bat, he drew a walk and scored a run.
RHP Barry Chapman (W 1-0) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits and struck out 1.

Ralph Hoskins (L 4-3) went 8 innings (CG), gave us 2 runs (1 earned), 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. He threw a WP and balked.

Let's see: the best I can come up with is that CF Barry Tucker reached on an error and scored a run in his only AB.

Pepe's report on Bob Grigg is a strained rotator cuff that will keep him out of action for about a month. That's not good...

And even worse, I hate being told, "I told you so!"
We guys at the bar hear ya. And we are all told "I told you so!" a lot. Me, and Dr. Schwartz, and Doyle, and Milt. It is ringing inside our skulls all the time, even when our dear ladies are not around. It also leads to more hat-gnawing for all of us, even when the Beavers are not losing. We cope with hat-gnawing, and a beer, while watching the game... or two beers. Or seven.

Well, except for Roger. He's the guy over there in the pink shirt sipping the Appletini. He seems always merry. I wonder why that is.

P Bob Grigg (24-R) was placed on the DL and our old friend Lonny Tomski (28-R) was recalled from Vancouver (AAA). Larry Smith (27-R) had pitched a shutout for us in his only start, but has not pitched so well in AAA since. He walked 7 and struck out no one in his last start.

Dallas Eagles (22-10 .688 in 1st place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (21-12 .636 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DAL: Bill Avallone (31-R 5-1 1.71) vs. POR: Frank Martin (27-R 4-2 2.70)

Two #1 starters go at it today. Avallone has only allowed more than 2 runs once this season. He is 2nd in the PCL in ERA. He pitched 2 good games against us in the regular season last year, but we beat him twice in the PCL Championship. The first time, he only gave us 2 unearned runs, but in Game 7, we scored 4 runs in the first inning and chased him from the game.

Martin has pitched 4 good games in a row, but is only 2-2 in that stretch.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
DALLAS
1: 1B Tony Sierra (26-R .414-87-1-10-.974)

6: CF Bob Holder (27-R .310-126-2-16-.851)

8: SS Gill Blair (29-R .215-93-1-14-.614) All-Star
9: P Bill Avallone (31-L .188-16-0-2-.600) Silver Slugger

8: SS Eddie Thomas (26-R .226-84-4-18-.656)
9: P Frank Martin (27-S .000-12-0-0-.077)

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 21,528

Top of the First:
Tony Sierra gets beaned... Chris Hagerty lines out to center. Edwin Juan pops out to shallow center. Steve DeMuro, 6 for 8 with 2 HR vs Martin, is up with a runner on base.... except that he is not, because C Dave Benya throws Sierra out when he tries to steal!!!

Bottom of the First:

Omar Flores bloops a hit to left. Dave Lesley grounds into a 5-4-3 double play... Dave Benya lines an 0-2 pitch into center for a hit. Jeff Austin grounds out to short. I still remember those days, so long ago, that I thought Austin was the only decent hitter we had on the team....

Bottom of the Second:

With 2 outs, Jeff Schottler beats out an infield hit and then steals 2nd and goes to 3rd when C Dan Kaczmarek throws the ball into center. Eddie Thomas grounds one to 3rd, but Qian Duan makes a bad throw for another error and Schottler scores! 1 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the Third:

Omar Flores leads off with an infield hit and then Dave Lesley doubles to the left field corner! Dave Benya grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Flores scores! 2 to 0, Beavers! Jeff Austin then takes a sweet swing at a 1-1 pitch and drives it high and hard and into the left field seats!!! HOME RUN!!! Do remember what one looks like? Well, there you go! The 10 game homerless streak is over! 4 to 0, Beavers! With 2 outs, Woody Griesbach hits a home run to right!! I think I wet my britches!!! 5 to 0, Beavers!!! Bill Avallone goes back whence he came. New Pitcher: Fernando Martinez (30-R). Jeff Schottler up and he...strikes out...

Top of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Chris Hagerty squibs one between the mound and home and beats it out for a hit, the first of the game for the Eagles. Edwin Juan quickly gets their second with a grounder to center. Steve DeMuro grounds one to second and Dave Lesley boots it... Bases loaded. Qian Duan walks to force in a run... 5 to 1, Beavers. Bob Holder grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6, and another run is in. 5 to 2, Beavers. Dan Kaczmarek pops out to 2nd and Lesley does NOT drop it!

Top of the Seventh:
With 1 out, Gill Blair gets hit by a pitch. PH Jim Bakutis (27-S) doubles to right center. The Bullpen is scrambled. Tony Sierra clears the bases with another double to right center.... 5 to 4, Beavers. Chris Hagerty grounds out to short and Sierra goes to 3rd. Edwin Juan grounds out to 2nd!

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Mitch Dowdell (25-L) to face Steve DeMuro.... he lines out to center! New Pitcher: Jorge Reyna (32-R) who gets the next 2 to fly out!

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-R). PH Dick Gottesman (31-L) strikes out! Gill Blair strikes out looking! PH Joe Aloe (28-L), batting .246 in 69 AB, is sent up. He lines one to right and Woody Griesbach gloves it and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!

Won - 5 to 4

We had 9 hits and made 1 error
Dallas had 6 hits and made 3 errors

First time we have scored 5 runs or more in 15 games!

Frank Martin (W 5-2) went 7 innings, allowed 4 runs (3 earned), 6 hits, 1 walk, 2 HB, and struck out 3.
LHP Mike Dowdell (H 1) faced 1 batter, Steve DeBeaverButcher DeMuro, and got him out!
RHP Jorge Reyna (H 3) faced 2 batters and got them out.

His first 3 hit day as a Major Leaguer! 2B Dave Lesley hit a double and scored a run. 1B Jeff Austin had 2 hits with his 5th home run of the year, stole a base and had 2 RBI. His 1st HR since April 19. RF Woody Griesbach hit his 2nd home run of the season.

Dallas Eagles (22-11 .667 in 1st place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (22-12 .647 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DAL: Salvador Gutierrez (27-R 0-1 4.50) vs. POR: Don Panighetti (25-L 2-1 2.33) All-Star

Gutierrez has only had 1 start this season. He gave up 4 runs, but went 9 IP, allowed 7 H, 1 BB and struck out 9. Last year, he was 3-2 in 9 starts with a 3.17 ERA. We faced him once last year. We won the game, but he did not get the loss. He only gave us 4 hits and 2 unearned runs in 6 innings.

Spaghetti Panighetti's last start was a regrettable choice on my part to let him pitch in Denver to predictable results. 4 runs in 2 innings.

Steve DeMuro, DeBeaverButcher, strikes again... He leads off with a home run to right center. Tie game at 1 all. With 1 out, Bob Holder gets beaned and has to leave the game. Pinch-runner: Tommy Wilson (30-R). Wilson tries to steal, but C Dennis Webb throws him out!

Bottom of the Second:

Wilson stays in the game to play right and Hagerty moves to center. We send up Gordon Saunderson (27-L) to hit for Dave Lesley. Saunderson flies out to right and Webb holds.... Tony Casarez grounds a hit to right and Webb scores! Austin heads to 3rd and beats the throw! 3 to 2, Beavers!! That is Casarez' 1st Major League RBI and it only took him 12 games to get it! Woody Griesbach plops one down in from of the plate and gets thrown out by the catcher.

Top of the Ninth:
Eddie Thomas is in to play short. Edwin Juan strikes out! Steve DeMuro up..... He pops out to 2nd!! Qian Duan flies out to left and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!

Won - 3 to 2
