My Garlon 100+ year sim
Ok, don't know which Garlon I used, rookie or what, I'm sure with one of the results, someone can tell me.
I used no Free Agency until 1975, but drafted players each year. Winningest Franchises? New York Yankees 40 playoffs, 20 championships. (AL) Pittsburgh Pirates, 28 playoffs, 11 championships (NL) *Dodgers right behind with 10* Only team to never make the playoffs? Diamondbacks. Player stats... Satchel Paige was, um, just wow, since the game put him in way earlier than RL. Played his entire career with the St. Louis Browns, from 1928-1947 418-248 2.18 era, 6326 Ks, 0.95 WHIP. (If the legends are true, then... ) Mel Ott played from 1928-1951 with the Yankees, 3785 hits, 855 HR, .327 AVG Mantle was #2 in HR, with 812, (with the braves, then finshed with the rangers, from 1951-1975) Ruth with 760(all with the Athletics), then Strawberry with 720. Ruth still holds the single season mark with 77, although Mcgwire hit 76 in 1987, no one else has even come close. Don Mattingly is the hit king with 4095, starting and finishing his career with the Padres, from 1983-2004. Big surprise for me? Kal Daniels. (who?) 1986-2004, (BOS, CAL/ANA), 3306 Hits, 603 HR, .348 AVG). One thing I did notice in this sim was that averages seemed way too high, with the 100th best performance being a .376, best being .430 by Turkey Stearnes in 1919. |

Bluto was his role model. The Reds kept Paul O'Neill instead. They chose . . .wisely. |

Go Turkey, Go Turkey, it's your birthday...
Dang, that is a heck of a year... .430 in 1919. Was that his rookie season?

No, here he debuted in 1923 and hung around until 1946. Had 3 years of .400+ hitting, and one year of .398 (1924). Finished with 2985 hits, and a .355 average. and an 8 time MVP! FYI, Cool Papa Bell was hit with injuries most of his career suffering 33 separate injuries from '25-'33 the last being a fractured knee that took him out for 11 months. He hung around until 1938 in a very limited role, only getting 1123 hits total. Last edited by Bishop; 09-07-2006 at 03:53 PM. |

Dang...33 injuries!?!? What the? It's such a tough call on what to do when a database is imported, since a good portion of the player abilities are relatively random it seems. Things like throwing arm and range are 2 others that can be pretty arbitrary, though you would think something like injuries would be based on career longevity and games played or appearances over that career.
A question just came up in another message, asking about the repetition of stats in the Arod/Garlon database for the Negro Leaguers. For those players, they repeated their statistics for 15 seasons, probably to try and generate a lengthy career curve. I know it's long past, but what were Bell's injury ratings when he came in as a rookie? Did he have an early career debilitating injury that may have made him more prone? I'm not sure on the logic of the injury rating though, since in some of my replays I've seen players with lengthy careers have a high number for injury rating. Just out of curiousity, how did Double Duty Radcliffe fare? The boys weren't very kind to him I didn't think with a .237 average.

Are you seeing people get hurt repeatedly and still contribute?
Short term injuries were toned down to not devastate a players ratings or potentials. Long term injuries can still eat a player up. I picked this up during patch testing: 08-15-1914 Injured (Dislocated Finger), out for 2 weeks. 04-22-1916 Injured (Strained Rib Cage Muscle), out for 2 weeks. 06-07-1916 Injured (Sprained Ankle), day-to-day for 1-2 weeks. 07-10-1916 Injured (Herniated Disc (Back)), out for 8 months. 04-24-1917 Injured (Blurred Vision), out for 2-3 weeks. 05-30-1917 Injured (Damaged Meniscus (Knee)), out for one week. 06-27-1917 Injured (Bruised Cheekbone), day-to-day for 2 weeks. 08-01-1917 Injured (Blurred Vision), out for 2 weeks. 10-04-1917 Injured (Dead Arm), out for 2 weeks. 06-02-1918 Injured (Inguinal Hernia), out for 2 months. 08-16-1918 Injured (Strained Calf Muscle), out for 2 weeks. 09-02-1918 Injured (Damaged Meniscus (Knee)), day-to-day for 2 weeks. 09-06-1918 Injured (Fractured Nose), day-to-day for 3 weeks. 04-23-1919 Injured (Bruised Cheekbone), out for 1-2 weeks. 06-02-1919 Injured (Scratched Cornea), out for 4 weeks. 07-02-1919 Injured (Dislocated Finger), day-to-day for 3 days. 09-22-1920 Injured (Bruised Jaw), day-to-day for one week. 10-10-1921 Injured (Sprained Ankle), out for 2 weeks. 07-22-1922 Injured (Bruised Foot), day-to-day for 4 days. 07-23-1922 Injured (Fractured Ribs), day-to-day for 5 weeks. 03-29-1923 Injured (Strained Abdominal Muscle), day-to-day for 1-2 weeks. 03-31-1923 Injured (Dislocated Finger), day-to-day for 2 weeks. 07-04-1923 Injured (Hyperextended Knee), out for 4 weeks. 09-03-1923 Injured (Scratched Cornea), out for 3-4 weeks. 03-21-1924 Injured (Bruised Ribs), out for 2 weeks. 05-20-1924 Injured (Bruised Foot), day-to-day for 2 weeks. 09-04-1924 Injured (Concussion), out for 2-3 weeks. 06-04-1925 Injured (Strained Hamstring Muscle), out for one week. 06-28-1925 Injured (Damaged Meniscus (Knee)), day-to-day for 5 days. 07-12-1925 Injured (Strained Rib Cage Muscle), day-to-day for 6 days. 08-02-1925 Injured (Bruised Neck), day-to-day for 4 days. 05-03-1926 Injured (Strained Back Muscle), out for 2 weeks. 07-18-1926 Injured (Strained Calf Muscle), out for 2 weeks. 09-24-1926 Injured (Dislocated Finger), day-to-day for 4 days. 03-22-1927 Injured (Blurred Vision), day-to-day for 1-2 weeks. 03-23-1927 Injured (Concussion), day-to-day for 3 weeks. 08-02-1927 Injured (Back Spasms), day-to-day for 1-2 weeks. 10-03-1927 Injured (Fractured Hand), out for 4 weeks. 05-18-1928 Injured (Concussion), day-to-day for 6 days. 05-29-1928 Injured (Dislocated Finger), out for one week. 06-28-1928 Injured (Damaged Meniscus (Knee)), day-to-day for 4 days. 07-19-1928 Injured (Strained Groin Muscle), day-to-day for 2 weeks. 07-27-1928 Injured (Bruised Wrist), day-to-day for 2 weeks. 07-31-1928 Injured (Dislocated Shoulder), day-to-day for 11-12 months. 07-15-1929 Injured (Bruised Foot), day-to-day for 3 days. 08-06-1929 Injured (Strained Rib Cage Muscle), out for 6 weeks. 05-04-1930 Injured (Bruised Ribs), day-to-day for 2 weeks. 05-07-1930 Injured (Fractured Wrist), day-to-day for 2 weeks. 05-11-1930 Injured (Inguinal Hernia), day-to-day for 3 weeks. 10-02-1930 Injured (Strained Rib Cage Muscle), day-to-day for 1-2 weeks. 10-07-1930 Injured (Fractured Finger), day-to-day for 2 weeks. 08-01-1931 Injured (Fractured Hand), out for 3 days. 04-04-1932 Injured (Damaged Meniscus (Knee)), out for 2 weeks. 06-28-1932 Injured (Fractured Hand), out for one week. 10-02-1932 Injured (Back Spasms), day-to-day for 1-2 weeks. 01-01-1934 Was inducted to the Hall of Fame! Washington made the playoffs every year from 1912-1919, missed 1920, but came back in 1921. They had a total of 19 pennants and 9 world championships. It got very lean in the later years, as most of their success was early on. They hit a drought after the 1954 season where they would win it all, not going to the post season until 1995 (Indians, anyone?) & 1996, but haven't been back since. Raidergoo, that is some crazy stuff. An injury list that long would make someone the unluckiest man on earth I would think. In all of my historical sims, I turn injuries down to low or very low anyway, so maybe I haven't gotten as many or maybe I just haven't noticed. I also tweek every player before the first year player draft, to fix anything that is goofy, like a high injury rating for a full-time player, error or range, etc.
I understand though, that maybe there is just some element of randomness when the game imports, just so you can't assume you have an all-time great if you were playing a season. There's that fine line between a historical replay and a historical simulation I guess.

Got any info on the Tigers? While we're on the subject, can you tell me how Kaline and Fydrich did?

Kaline's career was quite dissapointing. Drafted by the Pirates, he played steadily from 1954-1959, tailing off badly, hitting only .159 in 44 AB. From 1960-1968 he was stuck on the reserve roster, and didn't get a major league at bat. Was released by the pirates, picked up by the Pilots and hit .121 in 545 ABs. *ouch*, he stuck around for the 1970 season, but was equally abysmal and retired. His best year was probably 1956, he hit .279 with 20 HR & 96 RBIs. As far as Fydrich goes, was drafted by the A's, played 76 games in relief from 1976-1989, finishing with a 5.96 ERA The Tigers have not really been a good franchise. They've only been to the post season 6 times in 104 years, and won 3 world championships. They're almost perennial cellar dwellers, their worst year being 1978, they were -67- games out of first place, finishing 45-117. Apparently having Johnny Bench that year didn't mean much. Tracy Stallard one of their starting pitchers went a *glorious* 3-25, with ready..? an 8.94 ERA. This was a baad team. On the other hand, 1984 was their best year ever, finishing 103-59, with hall of famer Wade Boggs(suffered a CEI in 1992, played his entire career with the Tigers). Dickie Thon was quite a contributor as well. The pitching staff had two 20 game winners, Hall of Famer Bill Kruger, and then Len Barker. |
