Hall-Of-Fame Tournament

Was getting throuoghly bored watching the world cup(how many boring games in a row can there be, at least Brazil are playing next, but then with Dunga they'll probably be happy with a 1-0 win!!), i decieded to make my own historical ootp tournament,

First the rules, i have imported over 200(136 batters, 95 pithcers) from baseballs histories and put them into a 10 team leauge, no playoffs, winner of the league takes all.

There is no nothin, no trading, no player development, no scouting, coaching, draft, injuries, fatigue suspensions and no financials.

The DH rule is in, pitchers have high stamina, use of relievers is rare, closers is normal, and thats pretty much it.

All the players are put into a fantasy serpentine draft and i have selected a team at random, and i have the 10th pick.

It was interesting to see how the teams drafted, some went for pitchers early and often, whilst others concentrated on slugging batters.

I deciede to go for the best possible players, for the first 8 rounds before rounding out my team by getting some decent infielders and completing my pitching staff.

PREVIEW

Pitching

California(Walter Johnson, Rude Waddell, Mike Scott(the 86 version) and Ed Walsh, are ranked the number one unit, just ahead of Manhatten, Koufax, Marichal, Gomez and Carlton. The other pitchers staff are fairly even, but staten island is easily the worst, Hershiser, Cone, Sabathia, and Valenzuela, have a combined ranking of 9/20, fully 6.5 points behind Califronia.

Batting

The computer has two teams way out on their own, number 1, New England, which is also ranked as the overall favourite, on 34.5/45, is lead by Jimmie Foxx, Frank Thomas, Honus Wagner and Dick Allen, The game rates these frou players as all 4.5 stars out of 5 as a minimum.

My strategy of picking the best possible players has worked out well, Gehrig Mantle and Aaron are a fearsome three, but Piazza, Eddie Collins, Wade Boggs and Frank Robinson are all 4 star hitters, giving me a deep deep line up.

The other teams line ups are all 7/8 points behind, all within the range of 24-28, except for Miami, whose stratedy of pithcers first back fired, and have only Ty Cobb(5 stars) who is rated above 2.5 stars.

I will now sim out the season and see what happens, I will post the results up later

lawrence,

thanks for posting this idea and results. Good to see the league-leading ERAs are not ridiculously high.

will you be drafting "rookies" for a second season or is your universe a one-shot deal?

geoff
