I finally made a tweak that paid off: on Friday morning I sent Lee Smith to the reserves and recalled John Smoltz and placed him as stopper 7th and close game. The result was 50 wins in the last 54 games which included 2 16 game winning streaks and 1 of 12. I'm not making any changes for the playoffs! (Except to go down to 4 starters). Cy Young did win the triple crown by 5 K's, although he plays second fiddle to Cy Young in the other conference who was better in every way. Oddly, Walter Johnson has better WAR than Cy Young, go figure.... Cy Young was even the better fielder.

Six playoff teams this year: The Mineurs and Team That Shall Not Be Named won their divisions, while the Redlegs, Lumber Company, Tribe and Monarchs all made the wild card. The Redlegs (Diamond) and Lumber Co. (Gold) won their WC games, and are still in the hunt. Rotations are set, and the promotion push starts in 21 minutes...

Aliquippa jumped all over Dodge City's Warren Spahn for 5 first-inning runs en route to an 11-5 shellacking of the Prairie Dogs, so the P413 AC 2046 Division Series will be the Quips vs the Red Raiders in a rematch of the 2028 Perfect League Series.

The Quips scored an even 1,000 runs, which easily led the league, and feature the AC leaders in OBP (Luke Appling, .415), SLG (Mickey Mantle, .559), OPS (Mantle, .968), WAR (Mantle, 7.1), triples (Ty Cobb, 12), total bases (Mantle, 314), XBH (Mantle, 74), OPS+ (Mantle, 156), and wOBA (Mantle, .422). In a related note, I somehow get the feeling that Mickey Mantle will be named MVP after the season...

Good luck to the Quips! If Huntley goes down meekly in the Division Series after its record-setting year, it's good to know it will be to such a fantastically named team.

So, the Cowboys finished 45 GB of the division leader. And still managed to have homefield advantage in the wildcard game. We're playing that 136-win St. Louis Cardinals team in the division series, who I'm sure will go on to face Collingwood in the finals.

After last week with no teams in the 'yoffs, this week we've got all 3. So far there was another wildcard win and a division win. I tweaked my starters in the last few games of the season to make sure I had my top pitcher available for the wildcard games.

As mentioned, Aliquippa scored 1,000 runs to pace the AC. Huntley, meanwhile, scored 950 runs to finish second in the AC.

So, naturally, the first 2 games of the Division Series ended in scores of 2-0 (Huntley) and 2-1 (Aliquippa).

There was one common denominator...

Game 1
E. Walsh (HUN) 7.1 2 0 0 2 9 0

Game 2
E. Walsh (ALQ) 7.0 7 1 1 1 7 0

The crucial game 3 matches Huntley's Rube Marquard vs Aliquippa's Pedro Martinez...

Well, the Hunters took care of Jersey in a bit of an upset, and now I've got to face them in the LCS. They won the seasons series 10-8, so I'm obviously a bit worries. Here's hoping we exorcise that demon. On the other hand, would kind of be cool to get a Farmers vs Hunters world series, since it is the same manager. But not as cool as the Dolphins winning.

The Hunters definitely surprised Jersey. This paves the way for you as the clear favorite. But anything can happen in the playoffs as the Hunters proved.

Although Huntley plated a run in the top of the 3rd to kick off the scoring, a bases-clearing double by Josh Gibson in the bottom of the 3rd, followed by a double from Frank Baker to score Lou Gehrig and a single by Ty Cobb to score Baker in the bottom of the 4th, staked Aliquippa to a 5-1 lead. Things looked bleak for the Red Raiders...

But then, in the top of the 5th, the dam finally broke for Huntley, as they BABIP'd the Quips to death with 5 singles, a HBP, and a walk leading to 4 runs to tie the game at 5! Then, in the top of the 7th, a bases loaded single by Lou Gehrig and a sacrifice fly by Ken Griffey Jr gave the lead to Huntley, 7-5. The Red Raiders would add 1 more in the 9th to take the crucial game 3, 8-5!

Game 4, matching Huntley's Roger Clemens against Aliquippa's Walter Johnson, is mere minutes away...

Huntley will face Kingston in the AC Sub-League Series after taking down Aliquippa 10-2 in game 4 and 3-1 in the Division Series. Huntley's Mickey Mantle, perhaps reacting to all the praise lavished on Aliquippa's Mickey Mantle prior to the series, was the MVP, going 9 for 18 with 7 RBIs and 3 runs scored.

Kingston handled the Gustavus Foxes 7-3, 7-4, 0-4, and 9-1 to win the series 3-1. It should be a barnburner of an AC Sub-League Series!

The Raccoons ended the season going 8-10 and then opened the playoffs at home going 0-2 against the Gashouse Gorillas. After winning the 3rd game 7-3, I decided to start 99 Johnson so I pulled him from the pen and put Clarkson there. I also put Ruth on the bench in spite of his great season since he hadn't hit well recently and their park factors minimized power and they had a great control pitcher starting.

Johnson pitched very well, but the bullpen blew yet another save opportunity. I started Lajoie instead of Ruth at 1B and he didn't disappoint. It took 12 innings (with us outhitting them 17-6), but we finally won it with Lajoie getting the winning hit (a triple). He also went 5-6 driving in a pair and scoring a pair in our 5-3 victory.

Now it's back to the Evergreen Forest. So far the home team has lost every game. In the final game, we've got our ace Schilling vs their ace Walsh. Walsh won in the 1st game and Schilling lost in the 2nd game. Hopefully this will be reversed!

Two straight seasons ending in the division round. That's never happened before. Walsh shut us out 2-0. In could have gone extras, but our pen (Seaver this time) blew it again. He gave up 2 solo HRs.

So I'm definitely making my next priority a new SP which will allow one of our SPs to go to the pen replacing Blanton. It won't be quite the same level of upgrade as getting Lee Smith, but overall I think it will make us better for the playoffs having a new #2 SP.

The moment this week started I had a feeling that nothing was going to go my way. This sentiment was confirmed with the divisional round eliminations of the Nico-Nico Kneecappers (best regular season record) & St. John's Steelheads (blew a 2-0 lead), as well as the wildcard roun elimination of the Steelport Saints.

What an absolute waste. Hopefully next week my teams will decide to play like competent baseball things and not the useless slugs that I saw this week.

Progress?

The Frogs were back in the playoffs this week after winning 104 games and their division. But, the squad came up a bit short in the division series. The Asgard Warhammers edged out the Frogs 3-2 by taking game 5 at their place in 1-run fashion. I knew it would be a close series, I just wish my John Smoltz hadn't allowed a 4-run 7th inning to them in the clinching game. That, and nominal stopper SE Vida Blue making a G2 start and getting shellacked were decisive.

G1: 4-1 Frogs, Ed Walsh
G2: 2-10 Warhammers, Vida Blue and friends got destroyed on the road
G3: 3-4 Warhammers, Keefe over Seaver and the Frogs left the bases loaded in the 9th
G4: 15-8 Frogs, apparently love facing SE Charles Bender because he got smoked in the regular season also
G5: 4-5 Warhammers, their Don Sutton and my Ed Walsh stalemated, but John Smoltz gave it up

The Scottsdale Scorpions (a 115-win wild card team) upended the 122-win Maine Gems in the other DS, so it'll be Asgard-Scottsdale vying for the right to face [probably] the 135-win Glendale Golden Grizzlies for all the marbles.

Just as the first 2 Division Series games were low-scoring pitchers' duels, the first 2 games of the Sub-League Series were nail-biters.

In Game 1, Huntley's Arky Vaughan and George Brett came though in the first and second innings with 2-out RBI singles, and Ed Walsh and the bullpen made it hold up as Huntley won, 2-1.

In Game 2, Kingston's Rickey Henderson led off the game with a single off Walter Johnson. Wade Boggs then doubled, giving Kingston men on second and third with nobody out. Joe DiMaggio grounded out, driving in Henderson.

And that concluded the scoring in game 2, as Carl Hubbell shut the Red Raiders out on 6 hits and 1 walk over 8 innings, and Lee Smith pitched a 1-2-3 9th to bring Kingston even in the series, 1-1.

Once again, game 3 will feature Huntley's Rube Marquard vs Pedro Martinez. Will the pitching dominate in Kingston too? Or will the Red Raider bats awaken, as they did on the road in the Division Series?

In the NC, the 110-win St George Slammers steamrolled their way to the Perfect League Series, sweeping the Rexford River Rats and then the 103-win Belltown Bums. "A pox on your alliteration!" manager themariner was (not) heard yelling in the celebratory clubhouse after Sub-League Series game 4.

Meanwhile, their opponent is still unknown, as Huntley and Kingston continue to battle it out. Huntley took game 3 6-2 behind 8.1 innings of 2-run (1-ER) pitching from Rube Marquard and doubles from Griffey, Appling, Brett, Yaz, and Mantle.

Kingston jumped all over Don Sutton to take a 4-0 lead after 5 innings in game 4, but Huntley finally got to Doc Gooden in the top of the 6th with a BABIP'd-to-death special, as singles by Appling and Vaughan, alongside a walk drawn by Mantle, set up a 2-out, 2-run single by George Brett and a 2-run double by Yogi Berra to tie the game at 4. Lou Gehrig would then prove to be the hero, blasting a solo homer off Sandy Koufax in the 7th that would prove to be the winning run, as Huntley won 5-4 and increased its Sub-League Series lead to 3-1.

The series will go back to Huntley, however, as Kingston withstood another gem of a start by Huntley's Ed Walsh to take game 5, 3-2, in 11 innings, behind Roger Clemens and stellar work from 5 pitchers out of the bullpen.

Game 6 will be Hubbell vs The Big Train, a rematch of the game 2 1-0 classic. Can Huntley punch its ticket to a Perfect League date with St George? Or will Kingston erase the 3-1 deficit and force a winner-take-all game 7?
