Just another oddity, I guess

A passed ball is scored as an E2. It's considered a fielding play in that regard. Say there was a runner on third and the catcher committed a passed ball allowing the runner to score, it's an unearned run as he scored on what is technically an error.

Not necessarily unearned.

Refine the situation: less than 2 outs when it happens and next batter gets a hit. Run is earned because without the PB, he would have scored anyway.

A passed ball is not scored as an E2. It is scored as a passed ball. The guidelines for scoring errors and passed balls are two separate categories of Rule 9 in the rulebook (errors 9.12, wild pitches and passed balls in 9.13) and rule 9.12.d(5) specifically states that no error shall be charged to any fielder when a wild pitch or passed ball is scored. A passed ball is treated similar to an error for the purposes of determining earned runs, but it is not an error and not charged to the team or any player.

Fine, it's not scored as an error. I was addressing the issue of earned runs. If a guy scored from third on a passed ball and the batter hits the next pitch for a single the earned run is charged. If the inning turns out that the runner never would have scored save for the passed ball it's an unearned run.
