Should I give up on historical?

Ok, so I am trying to play historical for the first time. I took over the 1975 Boston Red Sox...you know, the team that went to the World Series. Anyway, I am GM only and have done nothing crazy...mainly simming games. The team is basically the same as the WS team. How can I be 11-24 and 14 games out of first??? Am I doing something wrong here? Should I quit on historical play, of is there something I'm missing.

When is small sample size not in play? I think I can still have fun with it, but we'll see.

Are you controlling lineups or is the MGR?
Sometimes things work out differently.

after 35 games the '75 Sox were 19-16.

The manager is controlling the lineups...I don't see anything I would disagree with there. There are no free agents to speak of and nobody really worth calling up. I guess I need to just ride it out.

IRL, the 1975 Red Sox were somewhat lucky (if you buy into the Pyth W-L formula). In a replay, it's hard to replicate their record in one-run games. When I've simmed the '75 season, Boston usually wins about 80-90 games.

Of course, now I just simmed the 1975 season and the Red Sox won the division with 102 wins. Go figure.

BTW, I used 1-yr recalc with real lineups & transactions.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I'm so used to my fictional world.

Just swept the Twins, so there's that!

Also, how did you create this league? 1 year recalc? 3 year?

Don't play historical, but I've had teams severely underperform early with a similar record to what you're seeing and ultimately finish at 90-100 wins. All hope is not lost just yet.

It's 3 year, does that effect the first year I'm playing? I just assumed it was a setting for when I move on to the next season.

Yes, it definitely affects the first year. 3-yr recalc takes last year’s stats plus this year’s stats plus next year’s stats and averages them.

I see...don't even recall that in the initial setup. I have much to learn!

No problem, CG. We’ve all learned by trial and error.

No truer words have ever been spoken, this game has been constant trial and error for myself. But enjoy it, learn something new every time, now instead of one step forward two steps back it is two steps forward one step back, progress . I actually look forward to many more years of trial and error. My idea of finding my perfect way to play may be a life long quest.

Finished the season at 82-80 about 12 games out of the eventual Champions, Baltimore. Came on pretty strong after I traded for Phil Niekro, but that horrible start was very hard to overcome.

I am now trying to play out 2019 and follow just slightly behind the actual games...I jump between this, my fictional league and perfect team. I am loving this!

I've also seen teams under and over perform for stretches in my replays... I also play single season historical replays w/ transactions and actual lineups activated. In my '28 replay the Indians, Senators and Cubs are over performing. The Yankees and my A's are hanging in the race, but have not taken over the AL (they were the 2 best teams in 1928)... I well recall my '64 replay when the AL's LA Angels were on fire until the All Star break, leading the Yanks, Sox and Orioles and then the Angels tanked, allowing the O's to win. Having conducted several replays, I've been quite impressed w/ the league and individual stats produced by the game engine!!

I'm currently playing 1919. I'm not using real transactions or real lineups though. Cincinnati is running away with the NL as we enter August. They have a 9 game lead over the Giants and the Pirates. Plus, they managed to fleece the Cubs for the services of Pete Alexander in a trade. Now the AL is looking to be a closer race. The White Sox got off to a ho-hum start and only recently righted the ship. A great July has them a top the AL. But, two surprises are right there with them, St. Louis and Washington. Boston is in 4th and could still be a factor as well.
