Interesting.
Using the default stamina/fatigue/usage settings for 1905, it appears the game used the two to three top starters in relief more often than not.....this was 6 man staff no bullpen. Played 1906, but this time used Garlon's settings Stamina--Very Low Use of relievers--very often Use of Closers--very often Now don't panic, this doesn't result in tons of saves----league high team wise was 11. The low stamina doesn't in anyway eliminate the complete game as there were 1859 complete games tossed using these settings. Team high 129, low 101. Boston Americans G/GS Cy Young 35-30 Tully Sparks 22-16 Norwood Gibson 32-28 Wiley Piatt 11-10 Dave Dunkle 32-21 Frank Browning 14-12 Sam Leever 32-19 Kid Gleason 3-0 Cleveland Naps Bunk Congalton 1-0 Frank Kitson 29-23 Vic Willis 39-25 Earl Moore 35-25 Bill Reidy 26-24 Glenn Liebhardt 9-5 Jack Taylor 29-22 Addie Joss 36-27 Otto Hess 5-3 New York Giants Tim Flood 1-0 Red Ames 34-30 Christy Mathewson 33-31 Hooks Wiltse 34-26 Al Orth 35-23 Bill Bernhard 28-22 Harry Howell 32-22 Curt Elston 3-0 |

It's interesting that Mathewson, in your sim, only had two relief appearances. There were some star pitchers who often appeared in relief and some who seldom appeared in relief. Mathewson was one of the latter. 87% of his career appearances were starts. Eddie Plank was another (84%). Compare that with Three-Finger Brown, who started in 69% of his appearances. Part of that was probably due to Mathewson's manager, John McGraw, who was something of an innovator when it came to using relief pitchers. But I imagine a big part of it was simply due to the fact that some pitchers had a reputation as "clutch" performers. The 1906 Giants would be a good test case. It looks like they carried five or six pitchers for the entire season (Henry Mathewson, Christy's brother, was the seventh - he appeared only twice, once as a starter). The starts were spread out as follows: 37-35-27-26-25-1-1. Cecil Ferguson was New York's "closer" that year. He had one start and 21 relief appearances, with seven saves recorded retrospectively. That wasn't typical for a guy who was at the bottom of a pitching staff, but, as I mentioned, McGraw wasn't afraid to employ somebody on his staff as a relief specialist. This reinforces my belief that there should be more attention paid to assigning pitcher roles. Looking at the Giants staff, I'd label Mathewson and Joe McGinnity as starters with no secondary role. Hooks Wiltse would be a starter with a secondary role of middle reliever or stopper. Ferguson's primary role would be stopper/relief specialist with emergency starter as a secondary role. The others (Dummy Taylor and Red Ames) would probably be like Wiltse - starters/middle relievers. |
