Storied PEBA Switching to 17 in mere days! Teams Open!

ONE OF OOTP'S MORE IMMERSIVE LEAGUES HAS OPENINGS
PEBA, a storied and prolific league, has a few openings and we are looking for active GM's who enjoy writing about their team, the league environment, fiction peripherally related to the league, Hemingway-esque international intrigue with a side of sabrmetric analysis, umm, theology(?), and a whole host of random other stuff. Are you that GM? Do you like to blog or tweet or periscope or [fill in the blank of the newest social media sensation]? Then PEBA is for you. We just entered the offseason, and are switching to 17, fitting as we enter the 17th season in league history! The Aurora Borealis just claimed the Rodriguez Cup, PEBA’s championship trophy, sweeping the final four games after losing Game 1 of the best of seven series. All four Borealis wins were 1-run victories.

This offseason will bring several changes in addition to the switch to the latest version. Foremost among the changes is our broadening of the league's storied writing focus so that all writing preferences - short form, long form, serial, telenovela, Broadway musical - will be welcome and rewarded in the league's unique contribution points system.

OOTP Version: 16, Format: Fictional

First Season: 2007 -|||- Current Season: Offseason before 2024 season

Days Per Sim: 7 -|||- Sims Per Week: 2-3

We will be updating this post as team’s fill with GM’s to profile the open teams, which include something for everyone: challenges, 2023 playoff participants, big market, small market.

Today, we profile the London Underground:

LONDON UNDERGROUND

Location: London, England

Owner: Sir John Fowler, Jr.

Stadium: Wembley Stadium (capacity 45,500)

2023 Season Record: 85-77

Best season record: 99-63 (2020)
Playoff appearances: 8
PEBA Championships: 1 (2018)

London is one of PEBA's original 24 franchises when the league formed in 2007, and the Underground was the first based outside of the United States. Interesting Brits in America’s pastime was a noble endeavor that didn't immediately meet with success. While luxurious Wembley Stadium filled to capacity for soccer matches and concerts, the Underground was not initially able to crack the three million mark in attendance. However, in 2016, the team made waves by hiring a British GM: Nigel Laverick, who up to that point was GM of the Kuwana Steel Dragons in Japan. He was quick to put his stamp on the team, and its fortunes changed almost immediately. Laverick placed an emphasis on cultivating England-born talent in an effort to attract the attention of Londoners.

More important to the franchise’s goal of charging up European fans is the Underground’s cadre of young pitching talent, headlined initially by Hiroyuki “Zippo” Nii, who has now spent a decade with the team, winning over 130 games over that span.

From 2017 until the recently-completed 2023 season, London qualified for every post-season, and captured the PEBA championship in 2018. The team’s success finally resonated with locals, and they now enjoy a loyal fan base. London is now consistently in the Top 10 in attendance.
In 2022, GM Laverick announced he would leave the team to run the newly-relocated Marseille Fishermen: PEBA’s third European team (Amsterdam arrived in 2021). Over the next two seasons, the team had a string of General Managers, and continued to qualify for the post-season despite the turnover.

Now the league heads towards the 2024 season, and London’s greatest asset is its pitching staff: Hiroyuki Nii is still with the team, and is joined by Bryan Bedell and Leonard Carver, who are the team’s two aces in the rotation. The franchise also sports a promising farm system, as its AAA, AA and Single-A teams all finished their seasons with winning records.
London’s General Manager position is currently available. Don’t miss your chance to mind the gap and write the storied franchise’s next chapter. Place your own stamp on the future of this unique trailblazing franchise.

Fun fact: So much clean-up and grounds repair was required after a June 2008 Foo Fighters concert that a three-game home series scheduled to start two days after the concert had to be relocated to Manchester. Over the years, several Underground home games have been rescheduled to suit the needs of various sporting and musical events.

OTHER TEAMS AVAILABLE:

AMSTERDAM LIONS

RIO GRANDE VALLEY OCELOTS

There is more I can’t say at the moment about the league’s offseason plans, but suffice it to say that it’s a very exciting time to join PEBA.
Our goal is to create an immersive and highly entertaining fictional baseball environment. We welcome any owner who enjoys contributing to that goal regardless of experience level. If you're an enthusiastic OOTP newbie or a seasoned vet looking for a new group of friendly people to compete against, the PEBA may be the perfect landing spot for you!

League Origin Story

The year was 2007, and America was starved for its National Pastime. The PED Scandal and greed on all fronts broke the nations trust in Major League Baseball, and an Institution of well over 100 years folded up shop and closed their doors. In came John Rodriguez, Sr and a group of wise business men who brought baseball back to the forefront – eschewing the big city lights and bringing the game back to the people.

It's hard to believe that was over 16 years ago.

Since it opened its doors, PEBA has had its share of controversy and tragedy; dynasty and Cinderella. It’s the home to ‘Fireworks’, ‘Tugboat’, ‘El Chupacabra’ and ‘Moon Dog’. It is a shared dynasty of 32 like-minded souls who have crafted an universe – a PEBAverse, like none other – and now you can become part of that legend.

What We're Like

League Structure

Each major league team has 4 minor league affiliates (AAA, AAA, full season A, short season A)

Four feeder leagues: 2 college (1 international and one US, and 2 high school (again, 1 international and one US)

4 independent AI leagues.

Playoff Structure

12 teams make the playoffs (3 division winners and 3 wild cards in each league)

Top two seeds in each league receive a first round bye.

Wild Card round is best of 5; divisional, league championship, and Rodriguez Cup each best of 7.

The PEBA is a unique participation-based league – we pride ourselves with quality writing that not only covers the game, but takes us out of the dugout and, at times, into the sublime. Two sims a week means we move fast enough to enjoy ourselves, but give you enough breathing space to explore the depths of your team. Nowhere else do you find a GM running his club from a mental hospital, a team broadcaster heading to a foreign land to rekindle his game – only to be hunted for drug smuggling, or a pair of buddies heading out on the road to visit every ball park – and ending up becoming a real life published book! We use a Contribution Points reward system that allows members to make teams their own – be it through ballpark adjustments, sending players to winter ball to ‘hone their skills’, or simply giving your favorite player a nickname – Just ask Michel ‘Train Arollin’’ Provost about that!

Our goal is to produce an environment that reflects realism. We play with Coaching and Scouting ON. Make personnel decisions that matter and prepare for the "fog of war" when judging prospects! It will be your skill and keen eye for talent that will separate you from the pack. Every GM has to rely on his scout’s opinion and his own gut feeling – everyone has their own opinion about a player – no cookie-cutter ratings here! Do you like to trade? Our bustling trade environment shows that if you can't swing a trade here, you can't swing a trade anywhere!

As part of our participation concept, we conduct our winter meetings and amateur draft live in our unique chat room. Shoot the breeze with your fellow GMs or lay the groundwork for that blockbuster deal.
We have been fortunate to attract a quality group of friendly owners – a stable core group that has been together long enough to create an extremely rewarding environment, and now you can find out why for yourself!

We're always interested in getting to know more like-minded individuals with an interest in joining in our fun and would love to hear from you.

I could say it was a great run league but it's not just down to the Commish. The Board works extremely well but most of all the GMs make this league. This isn't one of these export and turn up next week leagues, it's a full on league. The forum is the hub of it all, passing bits of league news, team news, help from a fellow GM and tales of life. You'll find it all there and don't forget we hold live drafts and Winter Meetings.
You don't want to miss this off season's Winter Meetings, there will be a lot to reveal this time round ......

The league is fantastic fun. I joined a few seasons ago and it has been very enjoyable. The guys are fun to talk to, and it is also a very stable, long-standing league with lots of great baseball minds (and overall friendly characters).

Also, the league moves fast enough that things keep progressing at a steady pace, but slow enough that you can enjoy your team's progress and you have time to really dig in if you want to.

It is well worth it!

(Also, if you want to get the latest scoop on the league, there is a podcast running. The latest episode goes through our recent 2023 playoffs!)

Teams are filling rapidly, as we have added two GMs just today. Thanks to some GM movement, the London, Amsterdam, and Rio Grande Valley teams pimped above are still available. Please complete the application linked in the OP above to join today!

The PEBA and affiliate LRS leagues include one of the most immersive, realistic, life-like, beyond OOTP mechanics leagues I could imagine would be available. If you are looking for something beyond just another OOTP league, this would probably be the best place to start. And the league was also the most well-run I have ever played in. Very well organized dependable and reliable operation. The human owner community was also the friendliest and most cohesive I've ever played in. Very respectful fellow members appreciative of the group as a whole.

I played for many seasons in the past. I am looking forward to re-joining soon.
