Starter or no starter?
Ok so I have a pitcher who has enough stamina to be a starter but only has 2 pitches. Should I try him as a starter or not?
Also what's the minimum stamina someone should have to be a starter? |

How good are the pitches, and what ratings scale are you using?

In general, however, this is the official wisdom on both of your questions:

Time to break out Scotty again.
For his fastball and slider combo he did quite well for himself as a starter for a dozen years. He had astonishing control and produced some insane BABIP numbers throughout his career, and he didn't come apart until his mid-30s. Then, in 1997, we moved him from the starter's to the closer's job. 1997 was a single, traumatic trainwreck for the Raccoons, and it didn't matter anymore at that point. He was then used as a swingman in the last few years. But late 80s, early 90s he was the #2 guy most of the time, behind lefty Kisho Saito, who knew how to bring the heat. Without looking at the profile you wouldn't have guessed that he only had two pitches. (His entire career was spent in OOTP 12. I don't know how it is now, but even when he was the #2 starter, he always asked for reliever's money, which was a nice break for a small-market team...) The minimum stamina thing is depending on the type of pitcher. A fireballer who generates lots of strikeouts needs a bit higher stamina than a control pitcher who generates tons of groundballs. As a rule of thumb I want at least 8 stamina from my guys, but those are done after 90 to 100 pitches. 12 is somewhat of a sweet spot where you get fed up with their act right about the time they are exhausted.

on a 10 scale, 3 is a minimum in terms of stamina but not all 3 stamina can actually start consistently. 35 on 20-80 scale.
As for two pitch starters, I have seen some but you are more likely to see those guys succeed if the league is low on pitching talent. So really depends on the file. Also knucklbeballers can get away with not having 3 pitches. |
