Wandering round the Q

This isn't going to be a long thread, full of stories, its more of a 'keep track of progress' thing.

2019/20 Season
Val D'Or Foreurs 11th, 68GP 34-30-4, 72pts
Playoffs - 2nd Round, lost to Sherbrooke 4-3, 1st Round, 4-1 v Rouyn-Noranda

Top scorer - Rudolfs Polcs, 61GP, 31-40-71. 12th highest scorer in the league, and a solid threat throughout the season.

Jonathan Lemieux also had a solid season between the pipes, playing 49 times, for 25 wins with 2 shut outs, .894 SV% and 3.38 GAA. Hopefully, he will improve next season with a better defence in front of him, as Xavier Bolduc will move on.

The first season consisted of moving one or two players around into the Jr B league, as well as trying to get some depth in the squad.

3 trades were made during the season.
  • LW Benjamin Dion (18y/o 32GP, 2-7-9, 8PIM) was traded to Charlottetown for RW Cole Edwards (19y/o 23GP, 8-10-18, 21PIM), this would bring a bit of depth to the right wing, where we were lacking, and also provide a little bit more scoring.
  • LW Alexandre Doucet (18 y/o 30GP, 5-19-14 22PIM) to Blainville-Boisbriand for LD Nathan Lavoie (19 y/o 33GP, 7-11-18 17PIM). We needed a stay home defenceman, and Lavoie brought that, as well as being a leader so that the younger players had a bit of support.
  • LD Aléc Rhéaume (18y/o, 11GP, 0-3-3 4PIM) to Acadie-Bathurst for LW/C David Doucet (16 y/o 30GP, 5-10-15 6PIM) . A fringe defenceman with no massive upside, for a decent young prospect who had the makings of a good two way forward. Played 3rd/4th line minutes once he came to North West Quebec.

2019/20 Season Playoffs

QMJHL Presidents Cup - Chicoutimi def Sherbrooke 4-2
WHL Playoffs - Edmonton Oil Kings def Everett Silvertips 4-0
OHL J.Ross Robertson Cup - Sarnia Sting def Hamilton Bulldogs 4-3
Memorial Cup - Calgary Hitmen def Sarnia Sting

NHL Stanley Cup - Washington Capitals def Edmonton Oilers 4-2
AHL Calder Cup - Cleveland Monsters def Grand Rapids Griffins 4-0

NHL Entry Draft 2020

QMJHL Entry Draft 2020

I wasn't expecting to get La Starza, the pre draft ratings had him in the top 5, and I was looking at Schriver.

Theres scope for work with him, and if he develops well enough, I can see him being a mid round pick for the NHL draft in 3 years.

CHL Import Draft 2020
Couple of pickups from Frolunda in the SHL, although, at this moment in time, neither of them are interested in coming over to Canada, so Polks and Mirzabalayev will take us forward this season.

So, in the aftermath of the draft, I was doing a little bit of free agent shopping, and found 16 year old Joshua Roy, the #1 pick in the 2019 Q draft available.
Center was a position I needed a little bit of a boost in, and he comes to Val D'Or after putting up 41 points in his first season.

Also coming to the team, were Felix-Antoine Marcotty, a two way right winger who had been part of the Chicoutimi side that won the Presidents Cup in 19/20. At 19 years old, he has one season left, but brings experience and durability.

The final signing for the start of the preseason was Pierre-Oliver Bourque. He had been away at Valleyfield in the Quebec Junior League, and was 42GP, 27-28-55 for 78PIM, at 20, he will be overage this year, and probably not dress, but, he is a great option to have, with his last experience in the MJHL being as a 16 year old.

It took until the Christmas week for the first trade to be made by ourselves.

As part of an effort to start making some of the squad younger, whilst disposing of the poorer performing older players, Thomas Pelletier (19yo 28GP, 1-4-5 16PIM +2) was traded to Acadie-Bathurst in exchange for Cole Larkin (18yo 34GP, 6-11-17 19PIM, +8). Larkin being slightly more mobile/agile, playing in the same position as his older compatriot.

Deadline day saw one of the Import picks, Liam Dower Nilsson of Frolunda, swopped for Mack Kachowski of Cape Breton. Kachowski was the 16th pick of the 2020 draft, and had been in the Jr B.

2020/21 Season
Val D'Or Foreurs 8th, 68GP 36-28-4, 76pts
Playoffs - Presidents Cup Final 1-4 v Baie-Comeau
3rd Round (Conference Final) 4-2 v Gatineau, 2nd Round, 4-1 v Drummondville, 1st Round, 4-1 v Sherbrooke

Baie-Comeau complete the double, winning the league by 8 points with a 53-10-5 record, scoring over 300 goals in the process.

An interesting end to the season, especially after we dropped off when we picked up a few injuries in the 2nd half.

Top scorer -
(Regular Season) -
Joshua Roy - 68GP, 33-42-45 32PIM +2 10th placed scorer in the league.
(Playoffs) -
Rudolfs Polks - 21GP, 16-9-26, 11PIM, +8, top scorer in the playoff.

Goalie - Jonathan Lemieux - 46GP, 22W 1SO, 3GAA, .894 SV%
2nd Goalie - Thomas Bowland - 24GP, 13W, 0SO, 2.85GAA, .900 SV%
This should be Lemieuxs last season with us, as he goes overage, Antoine Lacasse will step up.

Joshua Roy collected the Michel Briére Trophy as league MVP, he was also the winner of the Frank J. Selke Trophy, and was selected to the First All-Star team.

Defenceman Maxence Guénette was selected to the 2nd All-Star team, following an outstanding season which saw him go 68GP 20-39-59 +15, 43PIM, and 21GP 3-20-23 +21, 8PIM in the Playoffs. The 20 year old steps away from Junior Hockey at the end of this season, and will go into the Senators development programme.

2020/21 Season Playoffs

QMJHL Presidents Cup - Baie-Comeau def Val D'Or 4-1
WHL Playoffs - Portland Winterhawks def Brandon Wheat Kings 4-1
OHL J.Ross Robertson Cup - Kitchener Rangers def Mississauga Steelheads 4-1
Memorial Cup - Kitchener def Everett Silvertips

NHL Stanley Cup - Tampa Bay Lightning def Edmonton Oilers 4-1
AHL Calder Cup - Bridgeport Sound Tigers def Ontario Reign 4-3

A pre draft trade was made, which saw Jeremie Patel (16, LW) come from Baie-Comeau, where he was picked 21st in the draft in 2020, in exchange for a 3rd round pick from Gatineau and the rights to Ludwig Persson, who was picked up in the import draft in 2020. Patel has the scope to be developed as a defensive/two way forward, something which would see him being linemates with Joshua Roy in the future.

NHL Entry Draft 2021

The big news for us as a team, was Joshua Roy getting selected at #7, being the first player from the QMJHL to come out in the draft as well.

Other members of the Foreurs setup getting picked up were,
C Justin Robidas, #77 to San Jose Sharks
LD Felix Paquet, #174 to New York Rangers

At the start of the draft cycle, Roy was highlighted as being a top 15 player, however, his late season run, was enough to catapult him up the draft.

QMJHL Entry Draft 2021

Our first round pick, Emilien Guimond, is something different. Hes only just turned 16, and is one of the bigger built players in the draft.

From the scout reports, he looks to be pretty coachable, so, work on his ability in front of the goal as a screener is where I think we'll go.

2021/22 Season
Val D'Or Foreurs 6th 68GP 44-21-3 91pts
Playoffs - 3rd Round (Conference Final) 2-4 v Blainville-Boisbriand, 2nd Round 4-3 v Shawnigan, 1st Round, 4-1 v Sherbrooke

Top scorer -
(Regular Season) -
Justin Robidas - 63GP 44-66-110 49PIM, +25, 2nd placed scorer in the league.
(Playoffs) -
Justin Robidas - 18GP 10-11-21 12PIM +7

Goalie - Fabio Iacobo - 50GP, 33W, 2SO, 3.14GAA .895SV%
2nd Goalie - Casey Thomson - 24GP 11W 0SO 3.91GAA .869SV%

Justin Robidas took home the Frank J.Selke Trophy, becoming the second Foreur in as many seasons to win it.

Unfortunately, Blainville-Boisbriand, who ran away with the Regular Season trophy, were too good, and beat us in the playoffs.

We were allowing too much pressure on the netminders, so, it gives a target to go on the draft and free agency.

NHL Entry Draft 2022

For the 2nd season in a row, we had a 1st round pick, with Michael La Starza going #23 to Tampa. He put up 90 points in the season.
Also getting picked in the draft, was RD Josh Mapes, who went to New York Islanders in the 7th Round.

Former Val D'Or players in NHL
Jeremy Michel #217 pick, 2019, now at San Antonio (St.Louis)
Joshua Roy #7 pick, 2021, Calgary Flames.

QMJHL Entry Draft 2022

Chase Hodder was our pick. The big RD had been on our radar for a while, and was our first choice when we got to our pick.

As a 10th round pick, I don't hold much hope out for this guy, but, I drafted him for his size.
