Not just you. I think Ohtani really delayed the market. I’ve heard a couple theories. 1. There has been some chatter about GMs being less open to long and large contracts as well. Long contracts are risky and rarely pay off. 2. A lot of big free agents are hitting the market next off season and teams are hesitant to spend tons this off-season.

They apparently believe they're getting the 2014 Wade Davis.
I cannot explain Shaw and McGee. Maybe they figure they're not getting more than 5 from any starter so.....

Rockies fans are at least getting players. Mets fans are getting depressions, and they have to pay for those themselves.
The Mets' offseason literally was signing a 32-year old reliever who had his best career season by a fair margin at ... 32. Here come 98 losses...

1. Ohtani delayed things
2. Braves penalty delayed things 3. Stanton trade rumors held things way up 4. GM's don't want to give out massive overpays, so players are playing chicken 5. Next years free agency class is huge, and people want under the luxury tax threshold |

I think Colorado figures they have to overpay for pitching since they play 81 games in Coors. They probably could get hitters to pay them for the chance to hit in that thin air.

Blink this offseason and you'll miss it. Darvish signed with the Rangers.

YD signing with Texas was a fail on my part, lol.
Apparently the 'Stros are in talks with YD and thinking about moving for Gerrit Cole and (maybe) Chris Archer.

doing more than thinking it seems... Astros get Cole from Pirates (it didn't say what they traded in return).... edit: or not... got another blurb saying it's not a done deal. Last edited by stl jason; 01-10-2018 at 02:59 PM. |

At the risk of starting another WAR war by posting another Fangraphs article.....
This is an potential interesting reason for the slow pace of FA signings - basically the lack of competitive balance: https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/mayb...he-off-season/ Essentially, they project four divisions to be runaways, so why would these teams make a lot of offseason moves. Interesting theory anyway. |

Maybe the Mets do the right thing. Instead of trying to win 82 or 83 games and still be deflating, they can just sign nobody and join my Raccoons in teams that are so desperately bad they are actually amusing to watch as they randomly fall over second base at every opportunity. Everybody likes a good freak show. The '62 Mets didn't draw that poorly.
