Really, I mean it when I say I think his shot is broken. That's probably the cause of his loss of confidence but it's the root of the entire problem. That's not something that can be fixed during the season though, the Lakers need to hire a shot doctor and have him spend all of next summer doing nothing other than rebuilding his shooting mechanics and even then there's no guarantee that it gets fixed. Because this shooting motion:
may have worked in college, but it ain't gonna fly in the NBA. For one, it's slow as hell but secondly look at how low his release point is. That means he needs a ton of space just to get it off and in the NBA that just isn't going to happen all that much. And right now he's not even hitting his wide open shots and won't draw contact to get to the line. He's a mess and I think the likelihood of him panning out is lower than the likelihood that he's just a bust. I'm rooting for him though. |

Agree his shot is a mess and needs a total rework. But he can still be a good player without a good shot. Heck, his generic comp (Jason Kidd) wasn't really a very good shooter either, at least not until later in his career.

In his rookie season Kidd shot 39% from the field, 27% from three, and 70% from the line for a TS% of 47%. The relevant numbers for Ball are 32%, 25%, 47%, and 38%. His shot would have to improve a lot to be even as good a shooter as Kidd was.

Sure, obviously there is no excuse for any professional basketball player to shoot 47% from the free throw line. That's just practice. If he just shot 70% FTs the comp would be closer.
(Yes, we are talkin' about practice...) |

You ask me, he reminds me of Kendall Marshall. Terrific QB for your O, but terrible shooter & defender.

The Rockets are on pace to shatter offensive records. www.otgbasketball.com
has a great article breaking down their first 1/3 of the season. Of the top 5 offensive teams of all time, they have already shot more 3's than 3 of the top 5. I consider myself a progressive basketball fan but even I am not fully prepared for a world in which a team attempts 4000 3's over the course of a season. We are headed towards that if the Rockets make a deep playoff run. They are on pace as of last nights game to shoot 3542 for this season. |

Ever since Lil B removed the curse from Durant and Harden, they've done great things.

Dubs still have the ultimate X-factor in that Durant is essentially unguardable. But Houston is legit. |

The NBA is a copy cat league. If the Rockets make the Finals or win the Finals then we will see most every team increase their 3PA more so than they already have. The Rockets are 13th in 3P% so they are not exactly the most efficient from there but make up for it in volume. They are however #1 in 2P% despite being near the bottom in attempts. That is a product of only (for the most part) taking lay ups and dunks and also their sheer 3 point fire power opening up the lane for easy 2 point shots in the paint. But simply shooting a lot of threes per game is not a recipe for success. The #2 team in the league by attempts is hardly a top team (but are fun to watch and a team on the rise) |

Surprised at the Jason Kidd firing but at the same time not fired.
If that even makes sense... |

Me too. I could see a season rental. Despite the fact he is tremendously talented, he is never available for 70 games & is often injured in April-May when he is needed most.

Cleveland has pretty much traded their entire roster for an entirely new roster
But I don't think they will be any better and James is out the door anyways. Truly rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. |
