He is the first player of the World Series Era to hit 3 home runs in a game and his 9 RBI are a new season high for anyone. 7 was the previous mark. It was Kelchner's first start of the season after beginning the year in AAA. The Rainiers won, 14 to 4.

Random Fact of Week: The PCL West is very weak. Every team except us is below .500. Baseball America may have been on to something when they said we would win the division, I must admit, but they were still silly when they thought we would have the best record in Baseball and would lead our Division in runs scored. We are currently 4th of the 6 teams. I am not convinced we are the Best in the West, either. Our offense stinks and we are especially thin in the infield. If someone gets hurt, we are in big doo-doo. And our starting rotation does not seem all that great to me. Terry Melton is the only one who is pitching consistently well, though I must say he has been awesome. But there is no way he can keep it up for the whole year. No one could. Ron Wolf has done okay after a very slow start and Frank Martin has had some good games. But I have no confidence in anyone after those three. If one or two of them go down for the count, we are in big doo-doo.

Oakland traded C Steve Church (27-R) to Minnesota for 2 minor leaguers: P Bob Cook (24-R) and 3B Jerry Schneider (19-R).

Church was the Oaks' backup catcher, batting .231 with a .616 OPS. He is not a bad receiver, but has a weak arm.

Cook is considered a decent prospect, but he is unranked and is 24 pitching in A Ball. Schneider is not a prospect.

Portland Beavers (32-23 .582 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Denver Bears (27-27 .500 6 GB in 5th place in the PCL East)

POR: Terry Melton (26-R 7-2 1.74) vs. DEN: Danny Adame (30-R 6-2 2.95)

Adame is their #1 starter, making $1.8 million and signed through Year VI. We should not see many walks today. These two pitchers have combined to walk 13 batters unintentionally in 23 starts. Both have been a little susceptible to the long ball with 16 allowed between them.

Bottom of the Second:

Top of the Third:

P Terry Melton leads off with a double to center! With 1 out, Perry Templet reaches on a 2 base throwing error by 3B Ivan Gallegas and Melton scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Jeff Austin flies out to deep left and Templet tags up and moves over to 3rd. Howard McNeal singles and Templet scores! 2 to 0, Beavers!

Top of the Fifth:

Bases loaded with nobody out. Mike Carpenter flies out to right and Jarrett holds at 3rd. They leave P Danny Adame in to hit. He has a single today. He flies out to shallow left and Jarrett holds again. Call to the Bullpen: Lou Hertzberg (29-L). Dave Lesley comes in to play short in a double switch. Luis Castillo grounds out to 2nd!!!! bases loaded and no outs and no runs!!!!

Top of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Gary Guise (26-R), their closer with a 4.02 ERA. PH Gordon Saunderson leads off with a hit. With 1 out, Dale Ainsworth grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4, and then steals 2nd. Perry Templet takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. We have been harassing him for not walking much, but he has been walking a bit lately and actually now has the second most walks on the team. Of course this is a team that is free pass challenged.... Jeff Austin clears the bases with a double to left center!!! 5 to 2, Beavers!!!

Won - 5 to 2

We had 11 hits and made 2 errors
Denver had 8 hits and made 1 error

We extend our Streak of making errors to 6 games.
And now we have a streak of 3 games with 2 errors.
Today, both were made by 3B Randy James, who only had 2 on the whole season coming into this game.

Terry Melton (W 8-2) went 5.2 innings, allowed 2 runs, 8 hits, 2 (!!!) walks and struck out 1. At bat, he hit a double and scored a run.

Well, not all youth are rotten. Some other teams seem to have some neat young players...

I think the question is more "Who CAN be in our starting rotation?" ... alas, I was at Dr. Schwartz' place today to have some pimple looked at and we casually talked about the Beavers. Dr. Schwartz and I agree that Tommy Lonski has the soundest delivery of all Beavers hurlers and will be productive for a long time!

Also, the pimple is probably nothing to worry about...

As expected, Baltimore chose P Dave Murphy with the first pick of the draft. That left us with the next pick and a choice between an outfield bat and a left-handed pitcher. We chose the pitcher and I am already having second thoughts. We spent four of our first five picks on pitchers.

40 Rounds! All picked one at a time by hand with loving care! And it only took about 18 hours!

Scouting Director Dave Dafoe was a great help during the draft, giving me his advice on who we should pick in each round. In the third round, he advised that I pick C Chris Earley (18-R) from East Rankin Academy in Pelahatchie, Mississippi. But Earley is a slacker, so I would not pick him. From then on, Dafoe kept advising that we should pick Earley until he was finally drafted in the 36th round by the Denver Bears. Thanks a lot, Dave!

Tuesday, June 5, Year I

Cincinnati traded 2B Fran Haer (25-R) to Dallas for 2 minor leaguers: C Brian Graham (26-R) and LF Tony Cuara (19-R).

Haer is hitting .243 with a .612 OPS and has started 22 games. His fielding is terrible, but he is expected to hit better than he has shown.

Graham is a solid catcher. He started 7 games for Dallas before being sent to AAA, hitting .250 with a .729 OPS. His defense is acceptable. Cuara is a non-prospect.

Brooklyn traded RP George Thomas (32-L) to Milwaukee for 3B Scott McCanna (26-R) and minor league 3B Joe Hollingsworth (20-L).

Thomas has been excellent this season (2.16 ERA), but has a high price tag for a reliever ($630,000). He is signed through Year III.

McCanna has started 10 games for the Dodgers and hit .289 with a.691 OPS. His glove is solid anywhere in the infield. Hollingsworth is a middling prospect with low expectations of success.

We are in Milwaukee to play the Defending PCL Champions a 3 game series. They are the only PCL team we have not yet faced. They beat Seattle 3 of 4 games here over the weekend. They are 7th in scoring in the PCL with 4.2 runs per game (Portland is #9 with 3.7). They are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 4.0 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.1).

Portland Beavers (33-23 .589 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Milwaukee Brewers (31-25 .554 2.5 GB in 3rd place in the PCL East)

POR: Frank Martin (26-R 5-5 3.09) Rookie vs. MIL: Ray Bankston (30-L 5-3 2.84)

Bankston is their #1 starter. He has been excellent this year, except that he has allowed 9 home runs in 76 IP. But that weakness should not be a problem against the Beavers, who do not hit many home runs. We are 2nd to last in the League with 31 in 56 games, 1 ahead of the Houston Astros, who have an excuse with the Astrodome.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
PORTLAND
1: RF Dale Ainsworth (26-L .290-214-2-26-.745)
2: SS Dave Lesley (26-R .254-177-2-17-.663)
3: 1B Jeff Austin(29-R .264-212-8-34-.728)
4: 3B Randy James (32-R .257-140-6-23-.731)
5: 2B Gary Long (32-R .296-203-4-19-.753)
6: LF Jeff Schottler (24-R .250-112-1-8-.704) Rookie
7: CF Perry Templet (23-L .299-194-2-14-.776) Rookie 0-12 against lefties
8: C Dave Benya (26-S .103-39-0-2-.325)
9: P Frank Martin (26-S .136-22-0-1-.356)

MILWAUKEE
1: LF Gene Belt (24-R .292-161-3-20-.725) Rookie
2: 3B Tony Wilson (26-R .250-4-0-0-.500) Rookie
3: 2B Jack Stull (29-R .291-182-6-19-.803)
4: RF Larry Reichler (23-L .281-135-8-24-.890) Rookie
5: SS Tom Harriger (24-R .316-212-3-35-.801)
6: C Bob Coyne (36-L .273-161-4-22-.771)
7: 1B Barry Anderson (26-L .274-146-0-11-.724)
8: CF Dave Miller (29-L .240-104-2-10-.697)
9: P Ray Bankston (30-R .190-21-0-1-.455)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Milwaukee County Stadium
Weather: 64 F, Partly Cloudy, with an 11 MPH wind blowing out to left.
Attendance: 24,381

Top of the First:
Dale Ainsworth flies out to right. Dave Lesley flies out to left. Jeff Austin strikes out looking...

Bottom of the First:
Gene Belt flies out to center. Tony Wilson pops out to 2nd. Jack Stull grounds out to short! 1-2-3!

Top of the Second:
Randy James and Gary Long lead off with back-to-back singles. After Jeff Schottler fouls out to the catcher, Perry Templet lines his first hit of the year off a lefty to right and James scores! 1 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the Fourth:
With 2 outs, Larry Reichler hits a home run to right to tie the game at 1 apiece. That is their first hit by a non-pitcher and 2nd overall.

Top of the Fifth:
Dave Benya reaches on a two base throwing error by 2B Jack Stull, his 8th error of the season. P Frank Martin bunts him over to 3rd, but Dale Ainsworth strikes out... With 2 down, Dave Lesley lines a hit to left to score Benya! 2 to 1, Beavers!

Bottom of the Seventh:
With 1 out, Bob Coyne singles and goes to 2nd on a ground out. They send up a pinch-hitter: Don Duggan (25-L). With 2 outs and the pitcher due up next, I am certain we will walk Duggan intentionally, so I leave Martin in their so I can pull him when they send up a lefty for the pitcher. But we do NOT walk Duggan and he doubles to left to tie the game... 2 to 2. If I would have brought in a lefty reliever to face Duggan, I guarantee we would have walked him... Oh, I am mad... They leave Bankston in to hit, so I leave Martin in there and he strikes the pitcher out.

Top of the Eighth:
Dave Lesley gets a 1 out double and they intentionally walk Jeff Austin. Randy James grounds into a 6-4-3 double play...

Bottom of the Ninth:
Dave Lesley makes lucky error number 13 to begin the inning... Call to the Bullpen: Antoine Redd (31-R). They bunt the runner over to 2nd for the first out. Jack Stull beats out an infield hit to put runners at the corners. Call to the Bullpen: Jerry Wilhelm (32-L) to face Larry Reichler, their cleanup hitter and owner of a home run earlier. Wilhelm beans him to load the bases up.... With the infield in, Tom Harriger lines a hit to right and a run scores. 3 to 2, Brewers. Full count to Bob Coyne, a lefty, and he swings at the payoff pitch and hits it deep to left...and over the fence for a Grand Slam... 7 to 2, Brewers.

Lost - 7 to 4

We had 7 hits and made 1 error
Milwaukee had 7 hits and made 1 error

Frank Martin (L 5-6) went 7 innings, allowed 3 runs (2 earned), 4 hits, 1 walk, 1 HBP and struck out 4.
RHP Antoine Redd faced 2 batters and got 1 out and gave up a run and a hit.
LHP Jerry Wilhelm got 2 batters out after he gave up 3 runs, 2 hits, a Grand Slam and a HBP.

Ray Bankston (W 6-3) went 9 innings (CG), gave us 4 runs (3 earned), 7 hits, 1 home run, 1 intentional walk, 1 HBP and struck out 11. At bat, he had a hit. I wish we had a pitcher that could strike out 11 in a game...

SS Dave Lesley had 2 hits with a double and an RBI, but made his 13th error of the season. He only made 17 all of last year. 3B Randy James had 2 hits and scored a run. LF Jeff Schottler hit his 2nd home run of the season and had 2 RBI.

For the Brewers, C Bob Coyne had 2 hits with a Grand Slam and scored twice.

Oakland traded SP Jim DeSimone (32-L) to Chicago for a pair of minor leaguers: 2B Doug Hetrick (23-R) and LF Joe Gondek (24-L).

DeSimone was 3-3 with a 3.95 ERA. Both prospects are of the middling variety and are playing in the low minors.

The Cubs offered us a trade that I was tempted to accept. They were going to give us a minor league shortstop who is not as good as Manny Jimenez, our backup (who is terrible), for RP Jerry Wilhelm. Wilhelm has not endeared himself to me lately, but that trade would be a slap in his face and worthless for us.

We signed our #2 draft pick, SS Roger Owens (18-R) today for a bonus of $106,000.

Buddy French began a rehab assignment today in Vancouver (AAA). I do not think we will call him back up, though, unless we have an injury.

RP Don Schmidt says he is ready to go again, so RP Brian Hagans was optioned back to Vancouver (AAA) and 1B Joe Harrison was reassigned to the active roster.

We are back home to start a 10 game home stand with 3 over the weekend with the Dallas Eagles. They just won 2 of 3 from Seattle in Texas. We lost 2 of 3 to them in Dallas last week. They lead the PCL in scoring with 4.9 runs per game (Portland is #9 with 3.7). Their hitters lead the League with a .274 BA. They have not hit a lot of home runs (35), but have 128 doubles and 22 triples, both league leading figures. No other team has hit 100 doubles. They are 3rd in fewest runs allowed with 3.6 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.2). They are outscoring their opponents by 1.3 runs per game! We are 2nd best in the PCL at +0.5.

Dallas Eagles (35-23 .603 in 1st place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (34-25 .576 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DAL: Salvador Gutierrez (26-R 2-0 3.21) vs. POR: Ron Wolf (27-R 7-3 3.45)

Gutierrez began the season in the minors and has only made 2 starts. He won both, but has given up 22 hits in 14 IP.

Dale Ainsworth flies out and Parker scores. 2 to 1, Eagles. Perry Templet grounds out to 3rd to end the inning.

Bottom of the Sixth:
Jeff Austin leads off and reaches on the second error of the day by SS Gill Blair. He steals 2nd. With 2 outs, Randy James doubles to right to tie the game at 2!

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Fernando Martinez (30-R). 2.30 ERA. 22 H in 31.1 IP. With 1 out, Dale Ainsworth dumps a hit into left. With Perry Templet at the plate, he steals 2nd and 3rd! Templet swings at a 3-2 pitch and pokes a hit into center! 3 to 2, Beavers!

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (26-R). His first game in a week. Jeff Schottler (24-R) comes in to play left in a double switch. 2-3-4 hitters up for Dallas and they go down 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Eighth:

Randy James and Gary Long lead off with back-to-back hits and P Fernando Martinez has to leave the game with an injury. New Pitcher: Steve Patterson (29-L). Pinch-Hitter: Joe Harrison (35-R). He grounds unto a force at 2nd, 6-4, and James moves over to 3rd. 3-2 pitch to Dave Lesley and, with Harrison on the move, he grounds out to short and James scores! 4 to 2, Beavers!

Saturday, June 9, Year I

The Trading Deadline is less than a week away and teams are busy these days.

San Diego traded LF Tony Baez (31-R) to Houston for a pair of minor leaguers: C Douggie Hughes (19-L) and LF Mark Saylor (24-S).

Baez was hitting .259 with 11 HR, only 2 off the pace in the PCL, but being traded to Houston kills his chance for the Home Run crown. Hughes is a decent catching prospect from Jamaica, though his arm is very weak. Saylor is considered a solid prospect, but was sent back to AAA after hitting .190 in 105 AB for Houston this season.

Dallas Eagles (35-24 .593 in 1st place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (35-25 .583 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DAL: Carlton Barclay (27-R 0-2 3.44) vs. POR: Terry Melton (26-R 8-2 1.83)

Barclay has pitched very well in his 5 starts with only 1 HR, 9 BB and 40 SO in 34 IP, but has failed to get any breaks. On May 30 in Dallas, he had a no decision against us and Terry Melton, going 7.1 innings, giving us 2 runs, 1 BB and striking out 10.

Melton currently leads the PCL in ERA!

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 23,575

Top of the First:
Tony Sierra grounds out to 2nd. Edwin Juan swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 3rd. Steve DeMuro grounds out to 2nd! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Full count to Dale Ainsworth and he takes ball 4. Perry Templet lines a 3-1 pitch to right for a hit. Ainsworth had to hold up to see if it was caught, but then tries for 3rd anyway and gets thrown out by ex-Beaver Jim Bakutis. Bakutis is not known for a strong arm, but that is the 2nd base runner he has thrown out against his old team... Jim Austin grounds one to the pitcher and they get a force at 2nd, 1-6. He steals 2nd. Full count to Howard McNeal and he swings and deposits the ball in the upper deck in left!!! 2 to 0, Beavers! Randy James flies out to left.

Terry Melton (W 9-2) went 7.2 innings, allowed 3 runs (2 earned), 5 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 6. He retired the first 15 batters of the game. The unearned run he allowed was because of his own error.
LHP Jim Wilhelm faced 1 batter and struck him out.
RHP Barry Chapman pitched a scoreless 9th, though he allowed 2 hits.

Carlton Barclay (L 0-3) went 5 innings, gave us 4 runs (3 earned), 5 hits, 2 home runs, 1 walk and struck out 1.

CF Perry Templet had 3 hits and an RBI. LF Howard McNeal hit his 6th home run of the season and had 2 RBI. 3B Randy James went hitless, but scored 2 runs. 2B Gary Long hit a double and his 5th home run of the year, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBI. Another trade: 3 minor leaguers swap franchises: Denver sent 2B Bob Dillon (26-R) to Seattle for RP Phil Zawada (30-L) and 2B Wayne Officer (22-R).

Dillon is good enough to be a major league starter, but was trapped behind Superstar Rob Douma (27-R) in Denver.

Zawada is nothing, but the scouts like Officer who was playing in A ball for Seattle. This looks more like a courtesy trade from Bob Dillon than anything. I hear he was on the verge of quitting and going to play guitar in some coffee houses...

Question: What team has the best record in the Pacific Coast League?
Answer: The Portland Beavers! At least until they lose today after I jinxed them...

The best record in Baseball belongs to the Brooklyn Dodgers (38-21 .644). The second best record in Baseball belongs to the Philadelphia Phillies and the Boston Braves, both 38-22 .633 and both a half game behind the Dodgers in the NL East. The Beavers would be fourth in that division!

Dallas Eagles (35-25 .583 in 1st place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (36-25 .590 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DAL: Bill Avallone (30-R 8-1 3.29) vs. POR: Frank Martin (26-R 5-6 3.04) Rookie

Avallone has gone at least 8 innings in 5 straight starts, including a win against us on May 31. He is also the best hitting pitcher in Baseball, batting .333 with an .862 OPS. He has 9 RBI!!

Editor's Note:
We do not allow 2 way players in this universe. Why? Because in the history of baseball, no one has done it since the 1800's. And I am firmly convinced that no one ever can do it and be successful as a pitcher. Ruth tried it for one season and his pitching, which had been extremely high quality, went straight into the toilet.

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: 69 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from right.
Attendance: 22,672

Top of the First:

Tony Sierra grounds out to short. Gill Blair strikes out! Full count to Steve DeMuro and he lines one to center, but Perry Templet runs it down! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Dale Ainsworth lines out to 3rd, Joe Aloe making a nice play. Perry Templet grounds out to 3rd, Joe Aloe making a routine play. Jeff Austin lines an 0-2 pitch to right for a hit. He steals 2nd. Howard McNeal grounds a hit up the middle and Austin heads home, but gets thrown out by Bob Holder...

Top of the Second:
P Frank Martin's string of outs to start the game does not last as long as Terry Melton's did... Dick Gottesman leads off with a hit. Bob Holder grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and then scores on a double by Joe Aloe. 1 to 0, Eagles. Fran Haer beats out an infield hit. Dan Kaczmarek grounds into a 5-4-3 double play!

Bottom of the Fourth:
Howard McNeal draws a 2 out walk and then scores on a double by Randy James! Tie game: 1 to 1.

Top of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Tony Sierra walks and steals 2nd. With 2 outs, we walk Steve DeMuro intentionally to face Dick Gottesman, who singles to score Sierra. 2 to 1, Eagles.

Bottom of the Ninth:

Bill Avallone still tossing the ball. With 1 out, Randy James grounds a hit up the middle and they pull Avallone. New Pitcher: Jose Uria (24-R), their beleaguered young closer. He has 5 losses and 9 SV and a 4.71 ERA. 1 of the losses and 1 of the saves have been against us. Gary Long lines a hit to left and Randy James unwisely decides to head to 3rd, but he just does beat the throw! We have them on the corners with 1 out and the bottom of our order coming up... Dennis Webb grounds one to 2nd and they go for the double play, but only get 1 and James scores to tie the game at 2! We let Manny Jimenez hit because Dave Lesley really needs a full day of rest and we do not have an off day for a while and we are happy to go to extra innings here. Manny lines a hit to left!!! #5 on the season (40 AB)! PH Gordon Saunderson (26-L) works the count full and then pokes a hit to right and Dennis Webb scores from 2nd!!!! And THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!!

Won - 3 to 2

That is a sweep of the mighty Eagles!!!

Random Fact of Week: Every one on our team had a good week with the bat, except RF Dale Ainsworth, who continues his malaise that set in in May. He was 3 for 25 (.120) this past week.

Idiot's Note: I screwed up and deleted the Portland hitter's stat graphic and cannot reproduce it as I am a little ahead of this date already. It will return next week, if there are no more brain farts.... Our hitters aren't much to look at anyway.

We signed our top draft pick, P Ron Dreiling, today for a bonus of $460,000. That is a lot, but we had budgeted a lot for signing bonuses and we did not want to haggle.

The Oakland Oaks offered us SS Henry Rangel (27-R) for P Frank Martin (26-R). We said no thanks. Rangel is a great player, except that he has 9 walks and 275 AB.

The Denver Bears are in town to play a 3 game series. They lost 2 of 3 in Seattle over the weekend and 3 of 4 to us in Denver the weekend before. They are 3rd in scoring in the PCL with 4.4 runs per game (Portland is 9th with 3.8), They are 2nd in HR with 60, almost double our total of 34 (11th). They are last in fewest runs allowed with 4.9 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.1). Their pitchers have allowed the most HR in the PCL with 59 and walked the most batters with 235. We are 2nd best in HR allowed with 38 given up and best in walks allowed with 156.

Denver Bears (29-32 .475 6 GB in 5th place in the PCL East) at

Ivester gave us 3 runs on June 1 in 7.2 IP. He had a no decision.

Bottom of the First:

Dale Ainsworth flies out to deep left. Perry Templet lines out to right. Randy James grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Third:
Phil Parker leads off with a double. He has taken over the #1 catcher against righties. He is our best defender and he's hitting better than anyone else. He cannot hit lefties, though none of our catchers can... Dave Lesley flies out deep in the left field corner. P Tom Horn doubles down the left field line! 1 to 0, Beavers! That is all we get, though.

Bottom of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Gary Long doubles to center. Jeff Schottler singles to right and Long stops at 3rd. Phil Parker is up. Wild pitch and Long scores! 2 to 0, Beavers!

Pittsburgh traded RF Dave Mancini (26-L) and minor league 2B Al Nava (21-R) to Milwaukee for SP Ray Lewis (27-R) and minor league 3B George Elliott (24-R).

Mancini is a rooking batting .330 with a .924 OPS in 103 AB. Nava is a decent prospect playing in C ball.

Lewis is also a rookie and made his Major League debut 4 days ago with 3.1 hitless inning before having to leave the game with a tight back. He has very nasty stuff, but is somewhat wild. George Elliott is not much of a prospect, batting .243 in A ball, but I am pretty certain he is actually a male...

Denver Bears (29-33 .468 6 GB in 5th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (38-25 .603 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DEN: Dave Allen (36-R 0-0 2.45) Rookie vs. POR: Tony Kelley (25-L 1-1 3.32) Rookie

Allen went 5 innings against us on June 2, giving us 2 runs in the only game Denver has won against us in the 5 we have played. He had to leave his last start after 2.1 shutout innings with a finger blister.

This start is do or die for Kelley. We have some guys in Vancouver pitching very well there.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)

PORTLAND
1: RF Dale Ainsworth (26-L .272-239-2-28-.704)
2: CF Perry Templet (23-L .296-223-2-18-.753) Rookie

7: C Phil Parker (27-S .304-56-0-5-.754)
8: SS Dave Lesley (26-R .265-200-2-24-.685)
9: P Tony Kelley (25-L .143-7-0-1-.286) Rookie

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: 73 F, Clear Skies, with an 8 MPH wind blowing in from right.
Attendance: 17,788

Top of the First:
Luis Castillo swings at a 3-1 pitch and drives it to the wall in right where Dale Ainsworth makes a circus catch! Mel Jarrett grounds out to 2nd. Rob Douma flies out to center! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Dale Ainsworth grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Perry Templet swings at the first pitch, as he is wont to do, and pulls a soft hit into right. Jeff Austin flies out to left. Howard McNeal grounds one to short, but Tony Jimenez makes a bad flip to 2nd and Templet is safe! E-6. Randy James grounds one that would have been a hit to left, but it hits Perry Templet for an out...

Bottom of the Second:
Jeff Schottler leads off by reaching base on an error by 3B Ivan Gallegas. Phil Parker doubles to left and Schottler scores from 1st on a close play at the plate! 1 to 0, Beavers! But really, we should not be having close plays at the plate with no outs.... Dave Lesley singles to right and Parker stops at 3rd. P Tony Kelley bunts Lesley over to 2nd while Parker stays put at 3rd. Dale Ainsworth grounds out to short and Parker scores. 2 to 0, Beavers. Perry Templet grounds out to the pitcher to end the inning.

Top of the Fourth:
With 1 out, Wally Dardick doubles, then goes to 3rd on a hit by Mike Carpenter and scores on a ground out by Bob Pritchett. 2 to 1, Beavers.

Top of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Mike Carpenter homers to left to tie the game at 2.

Bottom of the Sixth:
Howard McNeal leads off with a single, but gets caught stealing. Randy James and Jeff Schottler follow with singles. With 2 outs, Dave Lesley singles up the middle and Schottler heads home from 2nd and beats the throw by a hair! 3 to 2, Beavers! PH Gordon Saunderson walks to load the bases up. With Dale Ainsworth, the coldest hitter in the lineup at bat, Allen balks home a run! 4 to 2, Beavers! Ainsworth grounds out to short to end the inning.

Top of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (26-R). Luis Castillo leads off with a hit and then Mel Jarrett triples... 4 to 3, Beavers. PH Yasuji Urata (24-L) flies out to right, fairly deep, but Jarrett holds at 3rd. With the infield in, Ivan Gallegas grounds one up the middle for a hit to tie the game at 4. Wally Dardick up and a wild pitch sends Gallegas to 2nd. We walk Dardick intentionally. Mike Carpenter grounds a hit to left and Gallegas scores. 5 to 4, Bears. Call to the Bullpen: Jerry Wilhelm (32-L). He gets the next two out.

Bottom of the Seventh:
Perry Templet swings at the first pitch, as he is wont to do, and knocks a hit to center. That sends Dave Allen to the clubhouse. New Pitcher: Alex Bartkowiak (24-R). He got the win against us in Allen's last outing against the Beavers. Jeff Austin bunts Templet over to 2nd. With 2 outs, Randy James takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Jeff Schottler then drills one down the line in left, that if it stays fair is gone.....it is fair!!! 3 run home run!!! 7 to 5, Beavers!!

Won - 7 to 5

6 wins in a row!

We had 12 hits and made 1 error
Denver had 14 hits and made 2 errors

Tom Kelley went 5.1 innings, allowed 2 runs, 8 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out no one. I have seen enough to think we can maybe do better with someone from Vancouver (AAA).
RHP Barry Chapman faced 2 batters and got them both out on 3 pitches.
RHP Don Schmidt (BS 1) faced 5 batters and got 1 of them out, allowing 3 runs, 4 hits and an intentional walk. He threw a WP.
LHP Jerry Wilhelm (W 2-1) went 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.
RHP Antoine Redd (SV 8) went 1.1 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.

Dave Allen went 6+ innings, gave us 5 runs (3 earned), 10 hits, 1 walk and struck out no one. He balked.
RHP Alex Bartkowiak (L 2-2 BS 3) went 1 innings, gave us 2 runs, 1 hit, a home run and 1 walk.

CF Perry Templet had 2 hits and scored a run. 3B Randy James had 2 hits and a walk and scored 2 runs. 2B/LF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits with his 3rd home run of the season, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBI. He made an error at 2nd, which gives him 2 in 3 games there, so I think that experiment is going to be put on ice. C Phil Parker hit a double, scored a run and had an RBI. He also threw out a would be base thief. SS Dave Lesley was 2 for 2 with 2 walks and an RBI. PH Gordon Saunderson had a hit. C Dave Benya had a hit in his lone trip to the plate, only his 5th hit of the season in 44 AB.

For the Bears, RF Mel Jarrett had 3 hits with a triple, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Mike Carpenter went 4 for 4 with a walk and his 9th home run of the season and had 2 RBI.

We inked our 4th round draft pick, P Harry Waldron (20-R) today with a signing bonus of $35,000.

P Tony Kelley (25-L) was put on a train to Vancouver (AAA) this morning and P Johnny Maskell (23-R) was called up. He will become the 7th Portland Beaver to make his first Major League start for us this season. He was 8-3 with a 1.89 ERA in AAA. He is not a strikeout pitcher, but who is on the Beavers? He has shown good control (2.0 BB/9) and has kept the ball in the park (3 HR in 12 GS).

During our current winning streak, San Francisco has stayed right with us step for step, so our lead over them has not grown and remains at 4 games.

Denver Bears (29-34 .460 7 GB in 5th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (39-25 .609 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DEN: Phil Zawada (30-L Season debut) vs. POR: Ron Wolf (27-R 8-3 3.38)

Zawada was just acquired in a trade with Seattle and will be making his Bear debut today along with his Major League season debut. He has a blazing 82 MPH fastball, but a very effective changeup. No curve or slider. He was only pitching in relief in AAA for Seattle. How good can you be if you cannot pitch for Seattle's staff with their 4.09 ERA (worst in the PCL West)?

6: 3B Glenn Pearce (39-R .255-94-0-8-.617)
7: CF Jeff Schottler (24-R .271-129-3-14-.771) Rookie
8: C Phil Parker (27-S .300-60-0-6-.754)
9: P Ron Wolf (27-R .160-25-0-1-.360)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 19,885

Top of the First:

Luis Castillo flies out to center. Tony Jimenez rips a hard liner to right for a single. He steals 2nd. Wally Dardick grounds a hit up the middle and Jimenez scores. 1 to 0, Bears. Ivan Gallegas swings at the first pitch and drives it deep to left, but Howard McNeal catches it at the base of the wall. Rob Douma grounds one to 3rd, but Glenn Pearce boots it for an error. Bob Pritchett grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the First:

Dale Ainsworth grounds out to 1st, 3-1. Dave Lesley grounds one to 3rd, but beats the throw to 1st for an infield hit. Jeff Austin flies out to center. Howard McNeal draws a walk. Full count to Gary Long and he swings and pops out to short.

Bottom of the Third:
Dale Ainsworth leads off with a double and Dave Lesley follows with a hit to right and Ainsworth scores to tie the game at 1! Phil Zawada has to leave the game with shoulder pain. New Pitcher: Gary Wood (30-R) and his 10.80 ERA. Jeff Austin strikes out and we get nothing off the bum....

They have been hitting Ron Wolf around pretty hard every inning, but he has somehow managed to keep them from scoring more through 5 innings. But the Bum with the double digit ERA is mowing us down....

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Gary Long blast a 420 foot home run to left center! 2 to 1, Beavers! Finally, in his 4th inning of work, we get something off the bum.... Glenn Pearce draws a walk and they pull Wood. New Pitcher: Alex Bartkowiak (24-R), who we scored a pair of runs off yesterday. Jeff Schottler doubles off the center field wall, but the tub o' lard, Pearce, can only make it to 3rd. They walk Phil Parker intentionally to load the bases up for P Ron Wolf, but we pull him down and send up Randy James (32-R). He flies out to right deep enough for Pearce to score without a throw. 3 to 1, Beavers. 2 outs. Dale Ainsworth doubles to center and another run is in! 4 to 1, Beavers! Dave Lesley pops out to the pitcher to end the inning.

Bottom of the Seventh:
Jeff Austin and Howard McNeal start us off with a pair of singles. Gary Long then blasts one to right, that I think is for sure his second home run of the game, but it hits off the top of the wall. He ends up with a triple and 2 runs score! 6 to 1, Beavers! After Glenn Pearce pops out, Jeff Schottler singles home Long! 7 to 1, Beavers!

Won - 7 to 3

7 wins in a row!

We had 13 hits and made 4 errors
Denver had 12 hits and made no errors

4 errors! 3 by SS Dave Lesley to give him 16 on the season....
He is on pace to make 40....
I have had enough....
He has been hitting great of late, but I cannot have a crappy fielding shortstop.
We have 2 days until the trading deadline and I will work hard to give up the house to get someone who can pick the ball.

On the happy side, we set a new season high by hitting in double figures for the 4th straight game and we scored 7 runs for the 3rd game in row, also a new season high.

Ron Wolf (W 9-3) went 6 innings, allowed 1 run, 8 hits, no walks and struck out 1.
RHP Barry Chapman (H 2) went 2+ innings, allowed 2 unearned runs, 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 3.
LHP Lou Hertzberg came in with 1 on in the 9th and retired 3 in a row with 1 strikeout.

Phil Zawada went 2+ innings, gave us 1 run, 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1.
RHP Gary Wood (L 0-2) went 3.1 innings, gave us 2 runs, 2 hits, 1 home run, 1 intentional walk and struck out 4. We lowered his ERA to 10 even.

RF Dale Ainsworth hit 2 doubles, scored a run and had an RBI. SS Dave Lesley had 3 hits and an RBI, but the aforementioned 3 errors. 2B Gary Long hit a triple and his 6th home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBI. He has been the best hitter on our team so far this year, much, much better than we expected. CF Jeff Schottler had 3 hits with 2 doubles, scored a run and had an RBI. I think it is time for him to take over in left field full time. C Phil Parker continued his unexpected hot hitting with 2 hits and an intentional walk. We put him in there just for his defense against the fast running Eagles and he has taken over the job full time. PH Randy James had a SF.

For the Bears, 1B Luis Castillo had 3 hits and an RBI. LF Wally Dardick had 4 hits with a double and an RBI.

The Bears announce the P Phil Zawada's sore shoulder should keep him out of action for 4 to 5 weeks. 3B Ivan Gallegas was also injured in the 8th inning making a fielding play. He is currently leading the PCL in home runs, but they expect him to be out about 3 weeks with a sore shoulder.

Thursday, June 14, Year I

I made a trade for a shortstop last night.

Trade #11:
We sent 2 minor leaguers: SS Jamie Brodsky (26-R) and CF Pat Campbell (21-R) to Brooklyn for SS Eddie Thomas (25-R) and minor league RP Dave Bonneville (24-L).

Brodsky is probably good enough to play in the majors right now, but is more of a third baseman as a fielder because his range is not the greatest, but I do not think he would hit enough to play third. He was in AA for us, hitting .303 with an .850 OPS. I probably should have promoted him to AAA and seen if he kept hitting. Anyway, he is 26 and not getting any younger and he is already given away. Campbell is an excellent defender. He was hitting .269 with a .740 OPS for Dubuque (C). He has definite major league potential, but is unranked as a prospect and Dave Dafoe does not think he will hit a whole lot.

Thomas is almost a shoe-in to win a Gold Glove this year, his rookie season. He has superior range and the softest of hands. His arm is good, but not superior, though his release is very quick. Dave Lesley made 3 errors for us yesterday; Thomas has made 4 the whole season! As a hitter, he is not much, but will take a walk and can run. He was batting .239 with a .666 OPS for Brooklyn. Bonneville is more or less a throw in. He is a soft tossing reliever, but he is a lefty and has an awesome curveball. He was pitching in AA for Brooklyn and that is where he will start out for us.

SS Manny Jimenez (29-R) and his .125 BA will be waived and sent to Vancouver (AAA), if he clears waivers.

More trades near the deadline:

Los Angeles traded LF Gordie Parris (29-R) to Cleveland for LF John Olsavsky (28-L) and minor league LF Ken Dickey (20-R).

Does this mean the Angels, who are the defending division champs, are already giving up, 7 games out in the middle of June? Probably not. Parris and Olsavsky are closely matched hitters according to the scouts, though Olsavsky is a slacker. Dickey is a decent looking prospect, though he has no power.

Denver traded RP Gary Wood (30-R) to Pittsburgh for a pair of minor leaguers:RP Gordon DeLong (23-R) and 2B Randy Hilliard (24-L).

Wood is the famous bum with the 10 ERA.

Neither of the minor leaguers is much of a prospect, but they have to be worth more than a pitcher with a 10 ERA, right? This is also the second really crappy pitcher the Pirates have traded for.

Baltimore traded SP Joaquin Villalobos (25-R) to Washington for minor league SP Paul Sigmon (23-R).

Villalobos was 4-8 with a 5.75 ERA and 13 HR allowed in 76.2 IP. Sigmon is considered a decent prospect, but is currently getting shelled in B ball.

The Milwaukee Brewers, the defending PCL Champions, are here in Portland to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just took 2 of 3 in Seattle. Last week, they beat us 2 of 3 in Milwaukee. They are 5th in scoring in the PCL with 4.2 runs per game (Portland is still 9th, but up to 3.9!). They are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 4.1 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.1).

Eddie Thomas arrived early this morning and says he is ready to play today, even though he did not get much sleep on the red eye flight from New York, where the Dodgers were playing. I guess you can do that when you are 25. How much you want to bet that he makes an error in his debut?

Milwaukee Brewers (36-29 .554 0.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (40-25 .615 in 1st place in the PCL West)

MIL: Tony Robles (23-R 2-6 3.79) vs. POR: Terry Melton (26-R 9-2 1.88)

Even though he is only 23, Robles is not a rookie. He looks like a good one; his weakness being the long ball. He has allowed 8 in 61.2 IP. He is a fine upstanding young man, to boot. We did not face him last week in Milwaukee.

Ainsworth makes it to 3rd. Jeff Austin beats out an infield hit and Ainsworth scores! 2 to 0, Beavers! Gary Long flies out to the warning track in center to end the inning. I have finally moved our best hitter into the cleanup spot, where he will surely cease being our best hitter....

Bottom of the Fifth:

Tony Robles (L 2-7) went 7 innings, gave us 4 runs, 7 hits, 2 home runs, 1 walk and struck out 7.

RF Dale Ainsworth had 2 hits with his 3rd home run of the year and scored 2 runs. CF Perry Templet had 2 hits with his 3rd home run of the year and had 2 RBI. SS Eddie Thomas, in his Beaver debut, hit a bases loaded double and had 3 RBI and also played errorless ball!

For the Brewers, 1B Don Duggan had 3 hits with his 1st career home run.

Friday, June 15, Year I

The trade deadline is here and the Brewers made a trade:

Milwaukee sent 3B Qian Duan (29-R) to their biggest rival this season, the Dallas Eagles, for SP Russ Lanier (25-R) and minor league RF German Galan (19-L).

Duan, the only Chinese player in the Majors, has been hurt and is expected to be out another week. He was hitting .253 with a .669 OPS before the injury, but is expected to hit much better than that. Dallas has been playing rookie Joe Aloe (27-L) at Third, but he is hitting .151 in 126 AB. Darell White (31-R) was expected to be the starter this season, but tore ligaments in his knee and is out for the year.

Lanier is a rookie off to a great start with the Eagles: 6-1 with a 3.77 ERA. The only knock on his early numbers is that his walks are a but high (4.2 per 9). Galan is a middling prospect and a long shot to make the majors.

New York traded LF Tom Boehner (33-L) to Philadelphia for RP Harry Webb (36-R) and minor league 2B Dan Halstead (23-S).

Boehner was hitting .326 in 86 AB. Webb has a 2.88 ERA in 25 IP. Halstead is not considered much of a prospect. Both of the old fellows are scheduled to be free agents after this season.

Milwaukee Brewers (36-30 .545 1.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (41-25 .621 in 1st place in the PCL West)

MIL: Ray Bankston (30-L 6-3 2.81) vs. POR: Frank Martin (26-R 5-6 3.00) Rookie

Bankston is their #1 starter. He pitched a complete game win against us in Milwaukee last week, striking out 11.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
MILWAUKEE
1: 3B Bill Valdez (29-R .263-232-5-18-.712)

3: 2B Jack Stull (29-R .290-221-6-23-.782)
4: RF Larry Reichler (23-L .276-170-9-28-.862) Rookie

4: 2B Gary Long (32-R .306-235-6-24-.816)
5: 3B Randy James (32-R .280-175-6-28-.765)
6: LF Howard McNeal (30-R .259-205-6-25-.714)
7: CF Jeff Schottler (24-R .279-136-3-16-.788) Rookie
8: C Phil Parker (27-S .303-66-0-6-.764)
9: P Frank Martin (26-S .115-26-0-1-.302) Rookie

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 23,250

Top of the First:
Bill Valdez tries to bunt his way on, but is out, 1-3. Full count to Dave Mancini and he takes ball 4. He tries to steal, but is gunned down by Phil Parker! That is why Parker is in there! That makes 9 of 18 on the season! Full count to Jack Stull and he flies out to center!

Bottom of the First:
Dale Ainsworth flies out to shallow right. Eddie Thomas grounds out to 1st. Jeff Austin grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Second:
With 1 out, Randy James doubles to right center. Howard McNeal draws a walk. Jeff Schottler doubles down the left field line and both runners score! 2 to 0, Beavers!

Top of the Third:
Gene Belt leads off with a double to straight away center. Diego Cordova singles and Belt moves over to 3rd. P Ray Bankston lays down a bunt. It is not a squeeze and Phil Parker pounces on it, fires to 2nd and Eddie Thomas fires to 1st for a double play! 2-6-3! Bill Valdez walks... He was supposed to make an out so we can write about how Frank Martin wiggled out of a tough jam... Valdez steals 2nd, the first of 3 attempters to succeed. Dave Mancini takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up with 2 outs. Yet another full count to Jack Stull who swings a the payoff pitch and drills it to the center field wall for a triple.... 3 to 2, Brewers. Stull comes up lame and has to leave the game. Dave Miller (29-L) goes in to run for him. Larry Reichler grounds a hit to right... 4 to 2, Brewers. Tom Harriger lines a hit to right and Reichler beats the throw to 3rd. Johnny Foerster, who will be Frank Martin's last batter, if he does not get him out, is up. He lines one hard to center, but Perry Templet is there to end the inning. Finally! I thought we are going to write about wiggling, not wilting....

Top of the Fifth:
With 1 out, 3B Ed Tinsley singles and Larry Reichler draws a walk. P Frank Martin is due up next inning, so we will try to get him through this inning. Tom Harriger flies out to center. 2 outs. Johnny Foerster lines a laser beam to right for a 3 run home run... 7 to 2, Brewers. When will I ever learn?

Lost - 8 to 4

The winning streak is over at 8 games...

We had 10 hits and made 1 error
Milwaukee had 15 hits and made no errors

Frank Martin (L 5-7) went 5 innings, allowed 7 runs, 9 hits, 1 home run, 4 walks and struck out 1. He threw a WP.
RHP Antoine Redd went 2 innings, allowed 1 run, 4 hits and struck out 1.
RHP Don Schmidt went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits and struck out 1.

Ray Bankston (W 7-3) went 7 innings, gave us 4 runs, 9 hits, 1 walk, 1 HBP and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit as did every Brewer in the starting lineup.

RF Dale Ainsworth had 3 hits and scored a run. He is a lefty, but is now hitting .357 vs. lefties and .257 vs. righties, though he strikes out a lot more against lefties and all 3 of his home runs have been against right-handers. SS Eddie Thomas had 2 hits, a HBP and an RBI and no errors. 3B Randy James had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. CF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits with a double and 2 RBI. He now has 13 2B in 140 AB. PH/2B Dave Lesley had a hit and scored a run.

For the Brewers, 2B Jack Stull hit a bases loaded triple. SS Tom Harriger had 3 hits with a triple and scored a run. CF Johnny Foerster had 2 hits with his 3rd home run of the season and 4 RBI.

The Brewers reported that 2B Jack Stull has a sprained knee that will take about a month to heal, but they think he can probably play through it.

Weather: 71 F, Clear Skies, with an 8 MPH wind blowing in from right.
Attendance: 24,312

A new high in attendance, after our Home Opener!

Top of the First:
Bill Valdez, just like yesterday, tries to lead off the game by bunting his way aboard, but just like yesterday, he is out, 1-3. Who does he think he's fooling? Gene Belt bloops a hit into right. Jack Stull flies out to center. P Tom Horn commits a balk.... Larry Reichler lines a hit into right center and Belt scores. 1 to 0, Brewers. Tom Harriger strikes out.

Bottom of the First:
Dale Ainsworth pops one up a mile high that the shortstop catches. Perry Templet draws a 4 pitch walk. Jeff Austin grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-4. He steals 2nd. Gary Long lines a hit to right and Austin heads home....close, but he is safe! Tie game: 1 to 1. Randy James hits a grounder to 3rd, but Bill Valdez boots it. 3-2 pitch to Jeff Schottler and he takes ball 4 to load the bases up with 2 outs. Denis Webb swings at the first offering and grounds one to 2nd, but Jack Stull bounces the throw to 1st in the dirt and Webb is safe and Long scores! E-4. 2 to 1, Beavers! Eddie Thomas grounds a hit to right and James scores! Schottler heads home, too, but gets thrown out by RF Larry Reichler to end the inning. 3 to 1, Beavers.

Top of the Third:

With 1 out, Bill Valdez again tries to bunt his way on and this time succeeds. Gene Belt doubles him to 3rd and he scores on a fly ball by Jack Stull. 3 to 2, Beavers.

Top of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Dave Miller bunts one in front of the plate, but reaches 2nd when C Dennis Webb makes a horrible throw to 1st. P Dan Morrell follows with a grounder to center for a hit and Miller scores to tied the game at 3 apiece.

Bottom of the Fifth:
Dale Ainsworth leads off with a hit and steals 2nd. Perry Templet grounds a hit up the middle and Ainsworth heads home and beats the throw! 4 to 3, Beavers! Templet goes to 2nd on the play at the plate. With 1 out, Gary Long singles and Templet scores! 5 to 3, Beavers! Dan Morrell is lifted from the game and that is all we get.

Bottom of the Seventh:
On the Hill: Ernesto Rodriguez (38-L), beginning his 3rd inning of work. Dale Ainsworth leads off with a hit and Perry Templet grounds into a force out, 4-6. Jeff Austin singles Templet to 3rd and Gary Long singles him home! 6 to 3, Beavers!

Top of the 8th:
On the Hill: Lou Hertzberg (29-L), beginning his 2nd inning of work. With 1 out, PH Rick Wagner (27-S) draws a walk. With 2 outs, Jimmy Foerster singles him to 3rd. Call to the Bullpen: RHP Barry Chapman (26-R). Dave Lesley comes in to play 3rd in a double switch. Bill Valdez does not bunt this time, but drives one over the head of CF Perry Templet for a base clearing double... 6 to 5, Beavers. PH Don Duggan (25-L) grounds one to 3rd, but, of course, Dave Lesley throws the ball away for a 2 base error and Valdez scores to ties the game at 6.... Jack Stull strikes out to end the inning.

Bottom of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Steve Hendricks (34-R) with a 5.54 ERA, but his stats do not look that bad. 15 H and 1 BB in 13 IP, though he has allowed 2 home runs. C Dave Benya (26-S), who is 5 for 44 (.114), beats out an infield hit! Eddie Thomas tries to bunt him up, but cannot make contact on his first two tries. With 2 strikes, he swings away and doubles to right center! Benya stops at 3rd. With the infield in, Dave Lesley has a chance to redeem himself, but grounds out to short and the runners stay put. They walk Dale Ainsworth intentionally to load the bases up with 1 out for Perry Templet. He grounds one through the right side for a hit and 2 runs score! 8 to 6, Beavers! Our #3 and #4 hitters go down quietly to end the inning...

Love the posts! I also started a 16 team fictional league, and began in 1946; trying to find my role with the game; I don't like managing/GM - just like to sit back and watch; but enjoy your posts.

Will Bill Valdez try to lead off the game with a bunt again? No, he lines a hit to left. Dave Mancini flies out to center! No infinite ERA possible! Jack Stull grounds into a 5-4-3 double play!!

Bottom of the First:
Perry Templet grounds out to 3rd. Jeff Schottler grounds out to 2nd. Jeff Austin grounds out to 3rd.

Through three innings, P Johnny Maskell has allowed the leadoff hitter to get a hit every time, but then retired the next three. It will bite him sooner rather than later, if he keeps it up.

Inning number 4 is a repeat performance of the first three for Johnny Maskell.

In the Fifth Inning, he breaks the cycle and retires them 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Fifth:

With 1 out, Gordon Saunderson lines a hit to center and then steals 2nd. With 2 outs, they walk Eddie Thomas intentionally to get to P Johnny Maskell. He was 2 for 24 (.083) with 10 SO in AAA. But he hits a double to right center and clears the bases!!! 2 to 0, Beavers! Perry Templet grounds a hit to right and Maskell lumbers for the plate. The throw is JUST late! 3 to 0, Beavers!

Jack Stull strike out! Larry Reichler lines a hit to left. The Bullpen is already warmed up and ready to go. Bob Coyne flies out to right! 1 out to go for a shutout in his Major League debut! Full count to Barry Anderson. Here's the payoff pitch and Anderson swings and lines a double to left center and Reichler scores... 3 to 1, Beavers. PH Don Duggan (25-L) is announced. Call to the Bullpen: Jerry Wilhelm (29-L). Duggan flies out to center and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

Monday Morning Report

NL Player of the Week - Dennis Ogle, CF, St. Louis (25-R .451/.506/.634) Had 12 hits with 3 2b, 2 HR, 4 BB, 0 SO, 9 R and 4 RBI in 7 G
PCL Player of the Week - Mike Francoeur, CF, Minnesota (25-L .305/.345/.504) Had 13 H, 3 2B, 2 3B, 2 HR, 2 BB, 1 SO, 1 SB, 1 CS, 7 R and 5 RBI in 7 G

Ogle is rated as the best player in the Major Leagues by Baseball America, but started the season injured and has only played 24 games.

(Slash lines are for the season, not the week)

June 12 - Mike Nackley (26-L) of San Diego pitched a 4 hit shutout at Houston. He walked 2 and struck out 9. That is his 3rd shutout in a row and 4th in his last 5 starts. It is his 5th of the season, which leads the Major Leagues, 1 ahead of Portland's Terry Melton. No one else has more than 2. The Padres won, 2 to 0.
June 12 - Gene Keen (26-R) of Washington made his Major League debut at Baltimore. He started the game, walked the first batter he faced and had to leave the game with a tear in his elbow that will keep him out of action for the better part of a year.
June 13 - Milwaukee scored 9 runs in the top of the 9th at Seattle to win, 12 to 11. They hit 2 home runs in the inning, including a Grand Slam by rookie Gene Belt (24-R), who also hit a double in the inning.
June 13 - 1B Tim Vigen (26-L) of St. Louis went 2 for 2 with 2 home runs and 5 walks at Chicago. He scored 4 runs and had 4 RBI. The Cardinals won, 15 to 7. The Cubs' pitchers allowed 18 hits and 12 walks.
June 14 - Ron Bozeman (32-L) of Boston pitched a 3 hit shutout at home versus Baltimore. He walked 1 and struck out 13. The 13 strikeouts sets a new high in the National League for the season and ties the Major League mark. He is now 5-5 with a 2.58 ERA. The Braves won, 6 to 0.
June 14 - LF Don Rockwell (33-L) of Brooklyn hit 2 home runs at Philadelphia, including a Grand Slam. He had 6 RBI. The Dodgers won, 10 to 5.
June 15 - Kansas City beat San Francisco. 12 to 4, at Candlestick Park. 1B Pedro Fuentes (30-R) had 4 hits with a double and a home run and a walk, scored 4 runs and had 2 RBI. 3B Tony Olson (37-L) had 4 hits with a double and a home run, scored 3 runs and had 4 RBI. The Seals scored all of their runs on a Grand Slam by CF Ron Chestnut (30-L).
June 15 - 2B Dave Edwards (31-R) of Cincinnati had 4 hits with 2 doubles and a walk, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had 4 RBI at home versus Chicago. The Reds won, 11 to 3.
June 15 - P Ray Lewis (27--R) of Pittsburgh made his Pirate debut and his 2nd Major League start. In his 1st start, which was as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers a week ago, he had to leave the game with an injury after pitching 3.1 hitless innings. Today, he retired the 1st batter he faced on a comebacker to the mound and then had to leave the game with a sore elbow. How many major league pitchers can truthfully say that they did not allow a hit in either of their 1st two career starts?
June 17 - Marty Schall (29-R) of Washington pitched a 3 hit shutout at New York in his Major League debut. He walked 3 and struck out 2. The Senators won, 9 to 0.
June 17 - Baltimore beat Boston, 11 to 7, at Fenway Park. RF Gary Larson (26-L) had 4 hits with 2 doubles, stole a base, scored 4 runs and had an RBI. I hear he is a bit of an odd ball and likes to draw... 2B Rusty MacNeil (28-R) had 4 hits with 2 doubles and a home run, stole 2 bases, scored 3 runs and had 4 RBI.

Random Fact of Week:
We have a nice lead in the PCL West right now, but I do not think we can win the division without beating our 2 closest followers, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Currently, we are 5-7 against them, combined, including 2-4 against the Angels.
