Merry Christmas #12: Rocky Colavito 1955
Lastly for tonight, the piece de resistance of the couple of dozen images I had scanned.
When the trajectory of Rocky Colavito's career suddenly swerved from probable Hall of Famer to cult figure, the Cleveland great began to move around: White Sox 1967, Dodgers 1968, Yankees 1968. There's a good J.D. McCarthy shot of Colavito with the Dodgers, taken at Wrigley Field. And Louis Requena captured him with the Yankees later in the same season. But as to the White Sox heretofore there has been only a shot by George Brace in 1967 in which Colavito appears to be reluctantly posing with relatives at Comiskey Park. And then sure enough he shows up in the Dexter pile, from its Spring Training 1968 shots, taken before Chicago sold Colavito to the Dodgers on March 27th. Making this spectacular image even more improbable is the fact that Dexter didn't make any White Sox cards in '68. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 12:48 AM. |

Swoboda With Braves?
Are there any known photos of Ron Swoboda with the Braves in the spring of 1974? He was signed in December and released on March 25, so it would not be a reach that he was photographed somewhere along the way.
Thank you to everyone for their amazing efforts this past year, and a to all a blessed new year. |

I'm a lifelong Phillies fan and I was never even aware that Jim Gentile had gone to Spring Training with the Phillies in 1967. That photo is a great find! |

Mickey Mantle 1951
Obscure outfielder who didn't find his true calling as a first baseman until...
Just a little self-mockery here. One last Dexter present (though many images yet to come) that makes you feel pretty bad they didn't make a 1968 Yankees set as apparently originally planned. This will probably be pirated and somebody'll make some money off it but what should I do, sit on it? It's just too fantastic. Plus I did a post for SABR's new Baseball Card blog that will be up this week and it will be included. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 12:48 AM. |

Phillies 1967 By Request
These would be snapped from the actual Dexter images on a light board, with some slight color correction: Dick Ellsworth (1958), Phil Linz (1962), Pedro Ramos (1955), Gary Wagner (1965).
As to further Dexters, I'll mention again that the whole collection is 500 negatives and to do them justice they need professional handling. So obviously I'm going to prioritize the players I need images of, as opposed to the other more frequently photographed ones. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 12:48 AM. |

McWilliams HOF News
Apparently, the McWilliams photography archive that he has passed along to the Baseball Hall of Fame is about to go through a major growth spurt.
As we've come to know, McWilliams donated over 10,000 images to the Hall in 2010, and they have since been catalogued and made available for sale as reproductions. John Horne, the curator of Topps' photo archive, has told several people including yours truly that the hope is that Topps, with the help of an outside contractor, will have lower resolution images of the McWilliams Archive posted on their web site sometime in 2017. But that's old news. This tease of major doings was at the end of a profile of McWilliams that was posted on the SABR site on December 23: What’s next for Doug? I still have 15,000 [negatives] to send [to the Hall of Fame], 35 millimeter and digital and keeps me busy, keeps me alive, keeps me going. I’ve got plenty to do! Cotton Nash 1967
More from the Dexter files.
Charles "Cotton" Nash had the extraordinary misfortune to not live up to his advanced billing in two pro sports. And for our purposes, he's also a tough color photo in each. Nash was a three-time all-America at Kentucky and the 14th pick of the 1964 NBA draft by the Lakers. He was unhappy with his lack of playing time, was released, drifted to the Warriors, only got into 20 games with then, and did not play pro basketball again until the debut of the ABA in 1967. Even back in Kentucky he would appear in just 39 games. His simultaneous baseball career followed a similar pattern. He produced 78 homers in his first 306 minor league games and was enough of a prospect for the White Sox to trade veteran first baseman Bill Skowron to the Angels for him in May, 1967. But he would get only 19 plate appearances and just three hits - all singles - in three quick trials with the '67 White Sox and '69 and '70 Twins. In fact, his MLB highlight was defensive. He went in for Ken Boyer at first base in the ninth inning of Joe Horlen's no-hitter in September 1967, made the three final putouts, and possibly saving Horlen's spot in history by stretching out his 6'5" frame to take a throw from second baseman Wayne Causey to just nip the hitter Jerry Lumpe. Nash later said he believed his lack of success in the NBA and the AL could be attributed to trying to play both sports at once. In any event, here's the Dexter image of him taken in camp with the '66 Angels. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 12:49 AM. |

Are there any known photo's of Camilo Pascual in a Padres Uni? He was on there roster for 4 days. 04/22/71-04/26/71. Acquired from Cleveland Indians as a conditional deal then returned 4 days later. Although did not pitch for them. Also Mike Jackson was there for 13 days 04/02/71-04/15/71, pitched 1 game for Hawaii. Just wondering if there are any known photo's. Thanks to any response

Does anyone have the Rafael Batista TV image with the 73-74 Astros uniform, or the file number? Much appreciated.

Jocko Halligan 1890
This is from a cabinet photo of the 1902 Jersey City Skeeters being auctioned by sterlingsportsauctions.com. I think this is an upgrade to what has been shown previously for Jocko Halligan.

Walt Woods 1898
Think this may also be an improvement for Walt Woods. This too comes from the auction of the 1902 cabinet photo of the Jersey City Skeeters by sterlingsportsauctions.com.
