Wade Blasingame 1963
Given that he spent from the middle of the 1967 season through the middle of the 1972 campaign with the Astros, there's very little color of this lefty (and drive by joke in a Will Ferrell SNL sketch 20 years later). This is probably from 1970 rather than 1969 as the Astro patch seems to be on the left sleeve (instead of the 1969 Baseball 100th Anniversity logo, with the Astro patch shifted to the right sleeve).

Will Ferrell made a joke/reference about Wade Blasingame in an SNL sketch? - That's news to me. Do you remember Ferrell's line? Another weird reference to baseball on a comedic TV show came on the David Letterman show in 1989 when Paul Shaffer, who was involved in a lot of skits in the early years of the show, plays a Cardinals fan who is listening to the radio and goes berserk when it's announced that Red Schoendienst was elected by the Veterans Committee to the Hall Of Fame. It's strange and disrespectful and a little unfair to Red. Probably miffed a lot of Red's and cardinals' fans. I know if they'd done the same thing a few years later about Richie Ashburn's election Phillies fans, including myself, would have been angry and insulted. |

Lots of actual card images in today's Vault upload. Including this image of Jesse Jefferson, which was used for his 1975 card.

Missing Player Frank "Yank" West 1894 Boston Beaneaters
I've located a photo of Frank "Yank" West who pitched for the 1894 Boston Beaneaters. It appeared in the July 7, 1907 Pittsburgh Press. It's quite a nice portrait of him in his Boston uniform.
I found the nickname Yank in his obituary which was in his HOF player file. That made all the difference, as a search of "Yank West" on newspapers.com located the photo in about 2 minutes, where I've spent the past few months fruitlessly digging on Frank West. |

Joe DeMaestri in 1962
Just noticed the post on page 1450 http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ml#post4084628
DeMaestri went into history as having retired after the 1961 season yet if you look at the background, that Yankees image is from Fort Lauderdale. They didn't move their spring training site there until 1962. This confirms something I had read (somewhere) long ago that DeMaestri didn't retire - he was cut during camp in '62. |

Tony Horton 1964 Hiding In Plain Sight
You'll never believe where I found a nice black and white image of the elusive first baseman in the 1970 Cleveland uniform!
In the 1970 Indians yearbook! (Smacks self in forehead). |

Color?
That would be a beauty if one of the colorizing masters out there could work their magic.

Dave Zearfoss 1896
Team pictures of the New York Giants of the 1890's are anything but scarce, yet there's so much going on here that it's worth the post.
This is from the July 4, 1897 edition of The New York Times Sunday Magazine. In the back row, fourth from the right, is Dave Zearfoss, who had broken in the year before as a 28-year old rookie catcher, and would still be on a major league roster at age 37 with the 1905 Cardinals. I don't know of a lot of images of him - there he is. There's also a pair of Hall of Famers, George Stacey Davis and Amos Rusie, and a few guys who deserve consideration (player-manager Bill Joyce, Mike Tiernan, Cy Seymour and George Van Haltren). Seymour led National League pitchers in strikeouts and walks that season (and again in 1898) and won 25, burned his arm out in 1900 and came back as an outfielder. In 1905 he had one of the most underrated offensive seasons ever, missing a triple crown by one homer (he had 8, the leader had 9) and leading the National League in hits, doubles, triples, extra base hits, total bases, batting average and slugging average. Later research would indicate he also led in RBI, OPS, OPS+, Runs Created, Adjusted Runs, Adjusted Batting Wins and Offensive Win Percentage. Seymour finished second in four other categories. In the back, it's Ducky Holmes (who after a trade to Baltimore came back and shouted into the stands at his ex-boss, infamous Giants' owner Andrew Freedman, using a heritage epithet as he did). And to Holmes' is right is none other than second baseman Kid Gleason who 22 years later would have the misfortune to manage the Chicago "Black Sox." Bill Joyce is manager number six among the thirteen employed by Freedman between 1894 and mid-season 1902, when the franchise was finally wrested from him and John McGraw came over from the American League to hold the post for three decades. But maybe the most fascinating part of this is the Giants' motley attire. There are at least five different uniform shirts and lord knows what Meekin and Sullivan have under those sweaters. Plus, three of the guys in just the front row are wearing mismatched shirts and pants. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 11:17 PM. |
