Digging for Oil (DYNASTY)

Well, with the new game and features information released, I thought I'd try and get back into this game but in this dynasty, I am going to report a season at a time. That way if the game messes up I wont have wasted a day to day log but only a smaller one. I will report as much information as I can at the end and if anyone wants to know anything, please just ask. I have done the initial season and here it is...

2013-14 Season, Oilers make the playoffs!

We had a great start to the season even though Sam Gagner and Ryan Nugent Hopkins started as injured players following the 2012-13 season which was a bit of a disaster. After the first month of the season, we were 2nd overall and stayed close to that heading into the all-star break. However, after said break, things started to be broken down and we hung on to a 7th place finish.

We made some moves durinng the season picking up Derek Roy and Mark Fistric. Botheer were solid pick ups but Derek Roy missed 13 games late in the season when we were struggling and Fistric missed close to half the season.

We managed to get a huge season out of Nuge as he led the team after coming back from injury and led the team with 22 goals and 52 assists and 79 points in his 79 games. Nail Yakupov and Taylor Hall were the big scorers this past season with Yakupov scoring 35 in his 64 games and Hall scored 34 in his 74 games. Jordan Eberle also had a very solid season with 33 goals and 22 assists in his 68 games.

Injuries certainly didn't help at all down the stretch as I said, we had a load of injuries to deal with and at one point we had Eberle, Hall, Yakupov and Fistric all out of the lineup. Scrivens was solid but got lit up anyways because of the lack of ability when we lost our solid players.

Our defense was fairly solid led by Captain Andrew Ference (4-44-48) with Justin Schultz (15-41-56) as the leading scorer on the back end. Jeff Petry (3-34), Oscar Klefbom (1-30-31 in his 59 games), Anton Belov (2-12-14), Mark Fistric (1-9-10), Matt Fraser (0-10-10) and Martin Marincini (0-4-4).

Overall we finished 40-32-10 with 90 points. Finished 7th in the Conference and played Anaheim in the first round of the playoffs. Anaheim however was a lot better than us in that series and beat us pretty bad. We mmanaged to win 1 game in that series but sadly, couldnt muster anything else.

Nashville Predators were the team that won the Stanley Cup.

Phil Kessel and Alex Ovechkin both led the league in scoring with 53 goals a piece for the shared Rocket trophy. Okposo also hit the 50 mark with 51 goals. Okposo ended up leading the league in scoring with 102 points in a great season for him. Duncan Keith who won the Norris this season finished with a +37 to lead in that stat. King Henrik won 47 games for the Rangers to help the get the the finals but fell short. Carter Hutton, rookie from Nashville was the best in the goals against average stat with his 2.40 gaa coming out this season and helping the Predators win the Cup.

Here is the Oilers scoring

Offseason, Leading into the 2014-15 season

The Oilers drafted 16th this season and in the first round we took Leon Draisaitl. Leon should be a solid player for the next decade once he becomes of age. A good skater with goood hands, wil probably go back to Prince Albert this season.

We didn't have a 2nd or 3rd round pick due to deals but in the 4th round, we drafted Center Pius Suter from the Soo Greyhounds. In the 5th round, we picked up LD Sebastian Moberg from Finland. In the 6th we drafted Dman Shawn Connors. Our 7th round and last pick was goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen.

We made a very large splash in the FA market though as we didn't lose anyone of major value and signed Ryan Callahan away from the New York Rangers for 5 years at 5.6 million per season, signed Dman Matt Niskanen from the Penguins for 5 years and 5.08 million and goaltender Brian Elliot from the St. Louis Blues for 3 years and 1.5 million. We have a log jam at goalie now with Elliot who will be starting and Scrivens and Fasth looking to be a back up thoough one will be dealt before the start of the season.

With the roster being pretty much set, we will be heading into the new season. Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent Hopkins are expected to lead the way again this season and big things are expected from Justin Schultz and hopeful prospect Darnell Nurse. This should be a good and fun season in the city of Edmonton.

2014-15 Season, playoff bound again

Pretty good season this past season finishing with a record of 46-32-4 and 96 points. Good for 3rd in our division behind the Calgary Flames and Conference champs Anaheim. Player wise, this was another rough season for injuries. Hall, Eberle, Hopkins all suffered fairly lengthy injuries through the season which hurt us equally when they were gone.

We made some seasonal moves picking up Tyler Myers, Brian Little, Tobias Enstrom, Cam Stewart and Gaudreau. Due to the injuries that we had during the season, we used some guys who weren't really ready though they did play quite well. Josh Currie who came from the Condors of the ECHL and filled in very well. He scored 10 goals and added 18 assists in his full 82 games.

Scoring wise, Jordan Eberle was on a complete tear when he was hurt late in this season. He finished with 43 goals in his 70 games but was leading the league when he was hurt and never really fully recovered from it and finished 4th inn goal scoring. Brian Little led the team in scoring with 71 points in his 84 games. Taylor Hall played only 60 games but had 57 points and really came on late to help with the push for the playoffs.

Brian Elliot played 45 games and posted a 2.99 gaa and a .903 and Ben Scrivens played 36 games and a 2.75 gaa and a .910. Expected a little more from Elliot after signing him in the offseason.

On the backend, Justin Schultz had a solid season scoring 7 goals and adding 40 assists in his 73 games played. Matt Niskanen had 10 goals and 28 assists in the season and played all 82 games. Overall, we finished 8th inn goals alllowed so I guess we did ok now we just need to work onn scoring.

Next up, the post season

2014-15 Post Season

Well, the first round was great and Brian Little was outstanding and helped us beat the Flames 4 games to 2. However we moved into the 2nd round against the Blues and things went way upside down. The Blues beat us in every way possible blanking us 4 games to nothing.

Another step in the right direction though getting to the 2nd round but time is running out on some of the vets and we need to make noise now.

The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Winnipeg Jets in the finals for their first championship in years.

On to the next season, off season, awards and free agency!

2014-15 Rookie Draft

Due to where we fiished in the season, we will be drafting 24th.

Minnesota will draft first overall followed by Philly, Colorado, Buffalo and then Vancouver to round out the top 5.

1st round pick - Aleksi Saarela - C - Finland. (Saarela is a great puckhandling center that has good vision and can spot the open man. We are expecting big things from him in the future)

3rd Round pick - Robin Steenssens - RD - Germany (Steenssens game is a passing one but he is a good physical defensman and will be good for tough play later in his career)

6th Round Pick - Luka Kraigher - LD - Russia (A borderline prospect isn't a standout in any part of the game but is average and capable in all areas)

7th Round Pick - Pablo De Gottardi - LW - Swiss (Long shot to make the NHL, De Gottardi is a small, quick forward but needs to work on his overall game to make it all the way)

Minnesota took Connor McDavid first overall, not surprising and Philly took Jack Eichel 2nd.
