Playoffs
Does anyone else have problems winning in the playoffs?
I assembled an absolutely dominate team that has reached the playoffs the past 8 seasons yet once the playoffs arrive EVERY YEAR, my team might as well be a AA team. And I lose in the most ridiculous ways like the Yankees hitting 4 straight home runs with two outs in the 9th, my Gold Glove shortstop committing 4 errors in two innings then replacing him with my defensive sub and him committing 2 errors. Absolutely ridiculous ways almost like the game is saying "Hahaha, you shall not win!!!" I don't know what else to do...any hints on winning in the playoffs? |

Welcome to OOTP. Don't worry, you're not the only one with these problems.
My personal (un-)favorite: blowing a one-game playoff by giving up 6 runs in the bottom of the ninth. |

The one full play-off series I had threatened to go awry (I had my manager - who supposedly was top-notch - doing everything, as it was my first season with the game).
With 3-1 down I decided it was time for a change and I took the time to play all the games myself, especially deciding when to sub in new relievers etc. It turned out to be a real nailbiter and a lot of fun, but in the end I did win the Championship Trophy. Did you play those games yourself? Or sim them? |

my team had 113 wins during the season and I nearly blew it but I got smart and drafted a few players as a backup plan before Sept 1 callup. This way they quailify for the playoff run. I nearly was knocked out in the first round due to injury and when wild card was done then I got my replacement and I was able to hold my own afterwards. Makes you get grey hair LOL But it gets exciting at same time.
The year before I had 94 wins and I lost in the Championship game in 7 games suffered through 3 injuries one due to a fight and other two went down by running bases and smashing into fence. Was hoping to win game 7 and do some replacement again for World Series. The key is having depth on the team |

I have a VERY deep team. No weaknesses. (It shouldn't after it took me 23 years to make that team ) I have two great pinch hitters (one with amazing speed/stealing/base running) and my ringer defensive player. And my pitching staff had a team ERA of 3.45.
ALDS-Play the entire series ALCS- Sim until if I'm down in the series then I'll play if need be. WS- Same as CS. I'm a Minnesota Twins fan. Oh...sorry about 1991. |

There always seems to be a hot team in the playoffs and it never seems to be your team. Playoffs in OOTP always seem to be a different season and never a slam dunk. I make it even tougher by setting all rounds to 7 games.

world series should be rewarding not easy LOL I just hate getting grey hair. I play every game just sim the first 3 innings and then sim one inning at a time to keep an eye on the pitch count. Then I start taking an active part of game.

Too many WEIRD things happen in the playoffs. For me, I've had runners with a speed of 1 or 2 scoring from first base on a single, runners with 1 or a 2 stealing bases, runners scoring even with the infield drawn in (the play strangely always going to first base with the bases loaded on a ground ball); that has happened multiple times... That's all I can think of now.
At one point I thought the outcome was pre determined - I even went on a lengthy rant about it on the forum somewhere. Then I did a little experiment: I started a play-off game, saved the game, played it, then crashed it multiple times and started over. Turns out, the results varied enough to rule that out. (I think) I paid attention to real life play-off games. No doubt, weird things do happen (the end of the Nats Cards series last year, the rangers and cards the year before, game 6 of the '86 world series, the sox /yanks in 04) But certainly not to level of weird that happens in OOTP. Unbelievable/unreal stuff happens in EVERY playoff series I've played in OOTP. Usually in a negative way. My feeling: The play-off logic or whatever you call it NEEDS RECODING. Or something... You do need some amount of variables and weird-ness to make the game fun and interesting, but it's TOO MUCH in OOTP as it is now. Right now it's too frustrating and not much fun at all. I have yet to see that in any iteration of OOTP. I'd suggest that it is so rare that it may not be in the game. Not every possible baseball play is in the game.

It happens. My 105 win team got swept in the Championship series but my wildcard 87-75 team won the World Series!

Just post it here. I'll be around and still not have seen it.

Promise I will. I wished I had saved it the first half-a-dozen times it happened. I didn't think too because I was to busy staring at the screen with my jaw open! Later follow with the obligatory head shaking. No cursing b/c I would have woken up my wife.
That would have lead to, "Are you still playing that loser baseball game?!" Last edited by drksd4848; 06-01-2013 at 02:29 PM. |
