What does "pitch to contact" mean?

I've looked somewhat and not been able to find an explanation. But maybe I'm not a good searcher.

Well, if you mean in real-life baseball terms it means:

Quote:
A pitcher who doesn't try to strike out batters but instead tries to get them to hit the ball weakly, especially on the ground, is said to pitch to contact. "Schilling has gone on the record as saying he'd like to pitch to contact more this season in an effort to reduce his pitch count and go deeper into games. Such an effort is likely to reduce the number of strikeouts he gets but in theory might provide quicker innings and faster games."
If you mean in how it works in OOTP14, the above definition will certainly give you an idea of what it's *trying* to do. Basically, your pitcher is not going to try to paint the corners or get the batter to chase pitches. He's going to throw hittable strikes, because he wants the batter to swing.

I've been using it in situations where a Base on Balls is NOT an option, so like bases loaded situations or when a weak hitter (or a pitcher) is at the plate and I want them to swing because they're probably not going to get a hit anyway. Also I've used it when we're just KILLING a team and I want my pitcher to control his pitch count and just get outs however we can; don't worry about giving up a few runs, just get the ball in play and get outs.

Another way to view this is a sinker ball reliever who tries to force double plays and get out of innings. Kent Tekulve and Dan Quisenberry were pitchers like this during their careers, especially given their submarine deliveries.

They weren't going to rack up a lot of strikeouts because they weren't power pitchers, but they had excellent control and could keep the ball down in the strike zone. So they pitched to contact as a matter of routine because they had high ground ball tendencies and could get batters to ground out and ground into double plays consistently.

If you have pitchers with a high ground ball percentage, you might consider using this option in the right situations.

I've been using it in this manner also with a good amount of success. I also use it when I find myself needing a double play ball.

I find it works much better with lower average hitters than the power opponents, but I guess that's to be expected.
