06/23/1985 - Athletics Bang Out 8-4 Win Versus Cleveland

The Oakland Athletics defeated the Cleveland Indians, 8-4, at Oakland Coliseum. Oakland designated hitter Dusty Baker was named player of the game for his superb performance. He was 3 for 4 with a double and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs. Steve Ontiveros notched his 10th save in 13 chances. The last-place Athletics lifted their record to 26-42.

Baker had a big at-bat with a runner on 1st in the bottom of the second inning, when he hit a run-scoring double. The Athletics went on to win.

"Enjoyed this one," Baker told the Oakland Daily News. "But it's back to work tomorrow."

Texas Rangers starter Greg A Harris was in fine form against the Oakland Athletics at Arlington Stadium, leading his team to a 5-3 win. The Rangers bumped their record to 38-34 with this latest triumph.

Oddibe McDowell chipped in for Texas with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the third. For the game, the center fielder had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 2 RBI.

"We had a good game plan," Harris said, "and we were able to execute it."

Oakland left-hander Bill Krueger made an effective start against the Toronto Blue Jays at Oakland Coliseum, leading his team to a 4-2 win. The winning pitcher was Krueger, now 9-5. He tossed 8 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 2 and fanning 6. Steve Ontiveros notched his 15th save in 18 chances.

Dwayne Murphy, who is tied for 3rd in the AL in bases on balls with 53, aided the Oakland cause with a run-scoring walk in the bottom of the first. For the game, the center fielder was 1 for 3 with a double and a walk.

"The effort we put into this one paid off," Krueger said.

Oakland is last in the AL West Division with a record of 32-46.

07/12/1985 - Kingman Hits 2 home runs in Athletics Win

It was a good time at Oakland Coliseum, where fans came to watch the Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics get after it.

The Oakland Athletics topped the Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 7-2, with the largest share of the credit going to first baseman Dave Kingman. Kingman hit 2 home runs, while adding 5 RBI and scoring twice for the Athletics. The Brewers, now 44-40, have lost 4 in a row.

Kingman had a key at-bat for Oakland early in the game. With runners on 1st and 2nd, he hit a 3-run home run. It was his 17th home run of the season and gave Oakland an early 3-0 lead.

"We looked pretty good up and down," said Oakland manager.

The Oakland Athletics topped the Milwaukee Brewers, 4-3, in AL action at Oakland Coliseum. The player of the game was Oakland pitcher and Oxnard, California native Chris Codiroli. Steve Ontiveros earned his 17th save in 20 chances. Oakland now has a 3-game win streak.

Had Jose Canseco not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Canseco hit a 2-run double. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Athletics.

"Been a rough stretch for us," said Milwaukee manager.

07/18/1985 - Athletics Lose, 5-3, at Exhibition Stadium

Toronto right fielder Jesse Barfield made his presence felt in the 5-3 Blue Jays triumph over the Oakland Athletics. Barfield was 1-2 with a home run and 2 walks. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. Gary Lavelle got credit for the win, improving to 3-2. He allowed no runs on no hits in 1.1 innings. Bill Caudill converted his 13th save in 16 tries.

Barfield had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the seventh. On a 1-2 changeup from Chris Codiroli, he banged a 2-run home run to right, giving the Blue Jays a 4-3 lead. It was the 19th home run of the year for Barfield.

"We'll relax tonight and enjoy this win," said Barfield.

The Blue Jays bumped their record to 49-40 with this latest triumph.

Dave Kingman left his imprint on the 9-5 Oakland win against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Athletics got a big at-bat from designated hitter Dusty Baker. For the game, Baker was 2 for 4 with 2 singles and a walk. In the top of the fifth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 61st hit of the season gave Oakland a 3-2 lead.

07/23/1985 - Multi-HR Day for Kingman as Athletics Overpower Red Sox, 15-7

Dave Kingman left his imprint on the 15-7 Oakland win against the Boston Red Sox. Kingman, who won the Most Valuable Player Award in 1979, was 2-3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 5. Chris Codiroli was the winner. Over 7 innings, he allowed 3 runs on 9 hits, with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts. Oakland is now 40-54.

Kingman contributed a big hit, a 2-run home run, for Oakland in the top of the third. With his team trailing 3-2, Kingman took a sinker from Rob Woodward and stroked the home run to right. His 22nd home run of the season allowed the Athletics to leap in front, 4-3.

"We'll put this win in our pocket and go after the next one," said Kingman.

In 5.1 innings, Birtsas surrendered 3 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 4. He allowed 2 runs. Steve Ontiveros was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 19 of 23 save opportunities.

Donnie Hill aided the Oakland cause with a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth. For the game, the designated hitter was 1 for 3 with a walk.

"You get some opportunities, you better take advantage of them," said Milwaukee manager .

Oakland is now 41-57, while Milwaukee is 49-47.

The Athletics got a big at-bat from left fielder Jose Canseco. For the game, Canseco went 1 for 3 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the sixth, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 17th home run of the season gave Oakland a 3-2 lead.

California Angels center fielder Ruppert Jones banged out 5 hits today, but it was not enough to keep his club from succumbing to the Oakland Athletics, 7-5. He went 5-for-5 and raised his batting average a few points.

"If the hits keep coming," an upbeat Jones said after the game, "the runs will too. And, more importantly, so will the wins."

Ruppert Jones singled in the 1st, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th.

This season Jones is swinging the bat at a .311 rate with 117 hits in 376 at-bats. To date he has hit 19 home runs, scored 67 runs and driven in 66.

It was a fun time at Kingdome, where the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners tangled.

Despite a great performance by Oakland first baseman Dave Kingman, the Seattle Mariners defeated the Athletics by the score of 8-6 at Kingdome. Kingman went 2 for 3 with 2 home runs and a walk, while adding 5 RBI and scoring twice. The Mariners have an impressive 68-43 record.

Gorman Thomas swatted a solo home run for Seattle in the bottom of the fifth. The designated hitter went 2 for 3 for the game, including 1 home run and 1 double. He scored 1 run and batted in 2.

"We swung the bats good throughout the lineup," said Seattle skipper.

He scored 2 times and drove in 2 for Oakland in the contest. Jose Rijo notched his 3rd save in 3 chances. The Athletics raised their record to 55-67.

Bruce Bochte, who is a two-time All-Star, aided the Oakland cause with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the third. For the game, the first baseman was 2-5 with a double.

In addition to his 1 single and 1 home run, he scored 3 runs and drove in 2. He also added 1 walk. Baltimore is now riding a 3-game win streak.

Young had an important at-bat with a runner on 1st in the top of the first, when he hit a 2-run home run. The Orioles went on to win.

Detroit rode a fine outing from starter Bob Stoddard to victory over the Oakland Athletics at Tiger Stadium. The final score was 4-2. Stoddard went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 7 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6. His record improves to 5-5. Willie Hernandez got the save, his 25th in 29 chances.

Oakland had a runner on 1st in the top of the ninth. With one out, Rob Picciolo came to bat, hoping to do some damage. Instead, he flied out. The score remained 4-2, Detroit. The Athletics saw their comeback bid fail.

09/09/1985 - Athletics Win Thriller, 2-1

Texas got a terrific performance from pitcher Tommy Boggs, but it wasn't enough to beat the Oakland Athletics. Oakland won the Oakland Coliseum contest, 2-1. Boggs was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 9 innings of 5-hit ball. The 6th-place Athletics now have a win-loss record of 60-78.

The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the tenth inning, when Oakland second baseman Tony Phillips, facing Dwayne Henry, had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It gave the Athletics the 2-1 win.

"Whenever we hold the other team to one run," said Athletics manager , "I like our chances."

Benefiting from an exceptional performance from Bruce Bochte, the Oakland Athletics defeated the Texas Rangers, 7-5. Bochte went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once for the Athletics. The 6th-place Athletics improved to 61-79.

Mike Davis, who is tied for 6th in the AL in stolen bases with 31, chipped in for Oakland with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 13th. For the game, the right fielder had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 2 runs batted in.

"Our team showed some resilience," said Davis.

He worked 6 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, while striking out 2 and walking 6.

Joe Carter, who is tied for 6th in the AL in home runs with 32, aided the Cleveland cause with a 3-run home run in the bottom of the seventh. For the game, the left fielder was 1 for 4 with a home run. He drove in 3 runs and scored once.

"We'll savor this win," Carter told the Cleveland Bulletin, "then get ready for the next game."

Cleveland is in last place in the AL East Division with a record of 61-87.
