"That was one of my best outings," said Nino Espinosa. "I was worried a lot in the bullpen. My ball wasn't quite right. Luckily, it can be two different worlds -- the bullpen and the game. Once I stepped on the field, it all fell into place."

It was an impressive start for the Mets hurler. He blanked the Astros 1-0 on a strong 4-hitter while ringing up 4 strikeouts and doling out no walks.

Mets first baseman Dave Kingman spoiled the pitcher's duel with a solo shot off RHP Dan Larson, and Espinosa made it stick.

Dale Murray was tagged with the loss. The Mets bumped their record to 56-52 with this latest triumph.

A crucial at-bat came with runners on 1st and 2nd and one out in the bottom of the eighth inning. That's when catcher John Stearns drew a walk. The Mets went on to win.

"Getting a lot of baserunners and getting some timely hits, it's a good combination," said Stearns.

Kingman had a homer off RHP Don Carrithers.
